- Well what can I say about this fly, if I could only fish one fly on small still waters for the rest of my days this is it. This fly has won me so many competitions, caught me so many fish and also got me so much abuse from mates because they know that it’s the best Damsel on the planet :). This fly is known as Ma Damsel by so many, many of those guys would ask me for one of Ma Damsels because they seen how effective it was. it’s all about the shape and movement.
I had my biggest rainbow trout from Moffat fishery many moons ago at 22lb but it caught me so much there.... Honestly this has to eb in your box. Fished on a Slime line of a floater and fast fig of 8 retrieve you won’t be disappointed.... Use the force and trust me when I say how good this thing is!!!!!!!!!!!

Bead: - Brass Gold, Fl.Red, Fl.Yellow or Fl.Pink
Flash Tail: - Definite Advantage Gold/Pearl Flash Mix
Tail: - Sunburst Collection Damsel Olive Marabou
Rib: - Uni-Wire Small Gold
Body: - Sunburst Collection Damsel Olive Marabou
Thorax Cover: - Sunburst Collection Damsel Olive Marabou
Hackle: - Dyed Olive Chinese Cock Hackle
I really hope that you tie these up and use them and let me know how you get on, they are dynamite

So the Dave Downie Damsels I made in lockdown got a try out for the first time today. I’d never really bothered with a Damsel before.....how wrong I was. The fish hammered this fly again and again today Davie..nips at it, chasing it ...6 rainbows one after the other.Brilliant pattern thanks again. Going to tie up a rack of them for my box.

Tied up some of these damsels and tried them at Wellsfield fishery. I used it 3 times on 3 separate visits and got a fish on each occasion. I think the gold and pearl flash makes the difference. Well done Davie a very handy pattern.👍😃.

Hi Dave, that damsel fooled 17 at Draycote on my first outing this year. Di3 sweep line fished very slowly. They were even taking it as I was counting it down, my line jumping like I was fishing buzzers. A near 6 pounder was one of those. Thanks Dave

I’ve been using your marabou for a lot of my Stillwater flies. It is fantastic. I’ll be ordering more colors later tonight. Great looking fly too, I’ll be tying some after my order arrives. Thanks for sharing so many flies, they’re all fantastic.

This is my no1 Damsel pattern. I remember you gave me one of yours at Loch Insch one year ... 2 casts later and I hooked a 16lb rainbow. Personal best fish and never bettered to this day. I’ve literally got boxes full of this pattern. Tied with Dave Downie’s Damsel Olive marabou.
If I counted just how many fish this pattern has caught me ... I bet it would be into the thousands.

Nice one David watched a old video of yours and tied your damsel, must admit at that time i was not a very good fly tier and for the love of me never could get to grips with the way you use your marabou, but this time with your new video at last i have got it lol stupid me pal, so more advanced now David and for sure i will go for it as bought your stuff a view years ago and now i know how to use it, thanks for sharing and tight lines pete from Scotland.

Hi there thanks for a good fly and tie,got to have a wee chuckle pal when you mentioned the Airflo freebie slime line as mine is still in it’s plastic bag unused, only river fished Clyde /Avon etc then but now do the bows as well.Do you remember the line size as not shown on packet or mentioned in the mag. Please keep up a most enjoyable series of tieing and interesting info, cheers the noo.
Mines works on my 6 weight sage think it was a wf7 they gave away as that was the most popular sizes at the time
