    Back before Disney threw it all away, there was a whole series of books called Jedi Apprentice, following the adventures of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon before episode one. In it, it comes up several times that lightsabers have adjustable blades, and can go from a tiny dagger up to the full length of the blade being just under a meter. They can't get longer than that in a hand-held version because the magnetic field generated by the grip collapses. The blades will also shut off if they come in contact with water unless they're specifically designed to handle it (such as Kit Fisto's), but those blades drain the power cell very fast when actually used underwater.
    There are actually larger versions. Things like disruptor beams, as well as the laser walls in Episode 1 use the same principle as a lightsaber blade. They just require power supplies that are too big to be man-portable.
    There's also another book set much later. In "I, Jedi" Corran Horn builds a lightsaber with multiple crystals and ends up able to adjust the blade into something resembling a spear. The only problem with that, interestingly enough, was that the blade had no weight and it made it extremely unwieldy and dangerous because you could flip it around so casually.

  • @williamsantosii2211

    I remember back in I, Jedi Corran Horn had an adjustable lightsaber for about half of the book. It was explained that to extend his blade from the standard to the almost 2 meter length he had to bring an additional focusing crystal online. When he did in the warehouse fight, it blew up because of impurities in the second crystal. Of course, Luke Skywalker in the later books against Darth Lumiya built a shorter parrying lightsaber to counter her lightwhip. Of course, we can't forget the Dark Jedi with the first Double bladed lightsaber Exar Kun, both could shorten to as short as half a meter and as long as a meter each apparently.

  • @deathlives4u932
    @deathlives4u932 Před měsícem +188

    Lightsaber length was actually addressed canonically pre-prequels in the expanded universe books. "Corran Horn" specifically is a recurring character in many novels who built a "dual-phase" lightsaber that could extend to (exact lengths vary but approximately) 3 meters in length by twisting the handle to use a different focusing crystal. The length is defined by the crystal the light is focused through - so to change the length you need a different crystal or different geometry of said crystal.
    The main down-side of the length is that when hit with an object it can't cut through, such as another lightsaber, the longer lightsaber yields mechanical advantage to your opponent and is much easier to push out of line. Extremely long swords have this issue somewhat - but they also have a lot of inertia helping them hold position. You have to remember that the lightsaber has no mass or inertia to help it hold its position - they are very vulnerable to being deflected by anything they can't cut.
    I can't blame you for not finding this lore however, since it is sadly no longer official cannon, and they've done some strange things since the canon went out the window. But it WAS addressed, surprisingly in depth. And I'd imagine the basic physics probably haven't entirely gone out the window even with the new canon.

    • @DIREWOLFx75
      @DIREWOLFx75 Před měsícem +17

      "The length is defined by the crystal the light is focused through"
      You also need a magnetic containment field that can manage it.
      And the normal, highly efficient field has a limit of around 1 to 1.5m. Beyond that, you need the next step up in fields, which is MUCH bigger and heavier and uses MUCH MUCH more energy to function.
      However, IIRC about Horn's superlong model, it was a one off experiment and deemed a failure?
      And burned out on the first use i think?
      "he main down-side of the length is that when hit with an object it can't cut through, such as another lightsaber, the longer lightsaber yields mechanical advantage to your opponent and is much easier to push out of line."

    • @joshuawilliams5213
      @joshuawilliams5213 Před měsícem +1

      Don't forget it also has to do with the size of the components as well. a massively larger saber would require a much larger power supply. As Direwolfx75 points out, not only does it need to generate enough power to create the plasma loop that allows a lightsaber to function almost indefinitely, but it also needs to power the magnetic field that contains all the heat and keeps it going in a loop. Oldeskul has a good point with protosabers, they technically only got sabers to their functional form that we are used to relatively recently in the starwars mythos. After that blaster tech followed along very quickly and improvements to saber design were no longer seen as necessary. Add on to that the individualism and ritualistic viewpoints that the Jedi had centered around the lightsaber and any real progress was seen as defiling "an elegant weapon for a more civilized age." Not to mention the Sith often mass producing sabers and making their own improvements which the Jedi would scorn as dark side influence.

    It's called a dual phase blade, it's a modification Darth Vader had on his own lightsaber. Lightclubs also have longer blades, but are usually used by larger species. But it's not very common for a few reasons. One, Jedi are very traditional, and struggle with breaking the mold to make themselves more dangerous because taking life is supposed to be a last resort. Two, because they have so much cutting power a longer blade can cause too much collateral damage, potentially to something important that could blow up or cause explosive decompression.

    Well, we can assume that for the standard lightsaber, the default length is the maximum length. Canonically, lightsabers use a containment field, so we can assume there is a maximum length. We also have to remember that the vast majority of Jedi are never going to fight another lightsaber user; most opponents will be blaster users, so blaster deflection is far more important. A longer blade doesn't really help with that. I remember that in the days way before Disney it was Canon that Lightsaber had a pushing force against the hilt from the blades containment field. Not that high in air, but quite substantial in Water or solid Matter. Besides the power draw and focusing issue, that is why blade length was not endlessly large.
    In one of the earlier Comics Luke Skywalker was ejected out into a space debris field with just an emergency space suit and his Lightsaber. He had quite some speed from the Air that pushed him out, so landing without something breaking his fall would surely result in him being killed or at least heavily injured.
    And he used his Lightsaber and this pushing force of the Containment Field to break his fall by simply pointing the Saber down, into the Asteroid he was going to smash into.
    I remember a pic of another Jedi in a comic using his Saber to slow his fall down a cliff/wall by pushing his Saber into the wall.
    When Qui-Gon jabbed his Saber to cut open the doors and they close the blast doors on his Saber, he would have had to use to much force to cut through, so he had to resort to melt them down
    I think it's like holding a jet engine in your hand that gets stronger the longer its blade is. At some point it will be more hindering then helpful.

    For the flat blade vs round blade argument, its not just about blocking, they often deliberately direct the blasters back at targets, thats a lot easier with a consistent blade

    • @theethicalostrich1388
      @theethicalostrich1388 Před měsícem

      This is a huge point. The flat blade would make it infinitely easier to redirect blaster fire.
      1) Angle determination. With a flat blade, determining the needed angle needed to redirect in the desired direction is just simple math. With a cylindrical blade, it is a far, far more difficult calculation.
      2) Aligning the blade at the calculated angle. Again, the flat blade has a huge advantage. Even when deflecting at an angle, you often have over an inch to intercept the laser. With a cylindrical "blade", you have literally a single point on the blade that would redirect the blast at the desired angle. Since a point technically has no width, that would make redirecting a blast at the exact angle you want literally infinitely easier with a flat blade.
      Now in practice, it is not quite infinitely easier as the target of the redirection isn't a point, but does have width, so there is an very small arc around the round saber that would redirect the blast to hit the desired person. Also, the size of the arc is inversely proportional to the square of the distance of the target from the saber. This means that the portion of the blade that you could use to redirect a blast at a target is 1000x smaller when trying to hit someone 50 ft away vs someone 5 ft away.
      So in summary, a flat blade would be a HUUUUUGGGEEEE advantage in redirecting blaster fire.

    1. Lightsabers are not weightless, they are beams of condensed plasma in a magnetic field, not a flashlight.
    If they were weightless you wouldn't see all those intricate lightsabers techniques, people would just spin them like Grievous does.
    Yet they can't because they are heavy, and he's a cyborg, so he doesn't care.
    2. Lightsaber length can be adjusted, but you can get so far as 1 meter with your standard kyber crystal.
    People used bigger crystals for different weapons, like Death Star or Luthen Rael's Fondor Haulcraft beams, those were massive.
    3. And we actually saw blade with different length modes recently, in Jedi: Survivor.
    Cal's main lightsaber is 1 meter long, but his shoto blade can be, well, short, around 0.7 meters in standalone mode, default in double blade mode, or can be redirected into main blade with crossguard emitter for a 1.5 m blade.
    But, back to square one: It's heavy af.
    I would also add about darksaber that its a unique blade for a reason: it was made by jedi-mandalorian. And if you know anything about mandalorians it shouldn't come as a surprise they tend to have their weapons "unique".
    The fact that it has edge alignment does make it harder to master, but also gives a slight advantage, so it's one to one.
    And even if we skip the fact that it's a unique blade, the answer to "why jedi don't use X modification of a lightsaber / X superior weapon, etc." is always the same: Jedi were symbols of hope and peace across the galaxy, not the warmongers. They probably can master some lightsaber nunchucks , lightwhips, kyber-blasters, etc - but that's not what jedi represent.
    And usually the only jedi who deviated from standard image of jedi with single blade are either because of alien physiology, darkside tendencies or survival need.

    Oh boy, time to get nerdy
    I think the most obvious explaination with the Lightsabers length is a more historical one.
    For a very long time in the Republic era there was basically very little Lightsaber to Lightsaber combat apart from the training among the Jedi themselves. In later eras it was also far more likely to encounter opponents with Blasters rather than Lightsabers.
    Blocking incoming fire from Blasters was simply way more common and there was no real reach advantage in these kind of situations by having a longer blade. A shorter blade might actually be more useful here because you dont have to worry about accidently cutting other stuff around you while quickly swinging to stop a Blasterbolt.
    And with the blade profile: First of it has probably somthing to do with tradition of the Jedi and diversions from the norm were not well recieved from the Jedi (you can see that with count Dookus Lightsabers curved hilt)
    And secondly, the Darksaber is a huge outlier in many regards, due to its special Cristal inside it and its (for the Jedi) really unusual Design. For example the blade (although its material should be) is not weightless to the user and it seems to also have some sort of inherent cutting direction preference, wich might have dictated/influenced the shape of the blade. When the user tries to wield it differently and without the proper willpower and concentration it almost seems to have some gyroscopic effect (as seen in the Mandalorian). The Lightsaber is after all not just a simple tool, but the cristal inside is on some level alive and connects to the user via the force.

    In the expanded universe there are several instances of people using unusual length lightsabers or various other kinds. There are lightsaber pikes, with extremely long handles and shorter blades, effectively a lightsaber spear, there are lightsaber clubs, wielded by the few jedi of large enough species to use them, and various jedi and especially sith who alter the length of their blades in mid-battle to confuse opponents. There are also various blade widths that come from the type and size of focusing crystals. Some are known to produce larger blades or more unstable blades, or are more heavily attuned to the light or dark side of the force, etc. The main reason for there being a roughly standard length is simply training. Most Jedi and Sith will stick to a single length because it fits what they've grown used to with lightsaber training.

    There were blade length adjustment knobs on Anakin/Vader’s lightsaber, and was apparently something of a common feature to have. I also remember reading somewhere about the size of the blade increasing, not just in length, but width, through some kind of expansion of the field that is generating the blade. This required more power and drained the battery quickly, so it wasn’t used often. The Darksaber, as it is shaped, isn’t a lightsaber, it’s a vibrosword with a beskar hilt, however, since Disney has taken over, the way things classically should and shouldn’t be done has been thrown out the window, and suddenly there’s a black-bladed lightsaber with a blade that isn’t round like what a magnetic field would produce, and you get the other questions that were asked in your video. Classically beskar caused lightsabers to turn off, so the Darksaber couldn’t be a lightsaber because it would continuously be powered off by its own guard. The armor the Mandolorians wear would make them virtually immune to lightsabers, and very deadly opponents to Jedi and Sith. Disney has since modified this to where beskar is just hardy enough to “repel” lightsaber strikes and blaster bolts, “fixing” an error that they made for themselves by not following the original rules and cannon in the first place. Go figure, it’s Disney. They’ve messed everything else up, why not this?

    "no downsides"
    SW takes place where space flight is old hat. With LOTS of action happening in buildings(with more than one planet like Coruscant, where the entire planet is a city) and on spaceships, where tight corridors is the norm.
    If your weapon is too long, trying to fight within a corridor-like space and inside buildings becomes a magnitude more difficult.
    And 2nd, barely any weight and inertia means that the longer blades you have, well, becomes an accident begging to happen.
    And as someone else already mentioned, once you go above a certain length, the normal, "small" magnetic field is no longer enough, it doesn't work beyond that length, and the next bigger type of magnetic field, requires drastically more power to function, you would basically need a small to mediumsized backpack to power it.
    And as a corrolary to that, blade profile is ALSO limited by the technical limits of the magnetic field. Making a non-cylindrical blade just isn't worth the effort as it draws more power without actually being capable of doing anything better. Because no, a flat blade is not more capable.
    "energy available to make it longer","if you have enough energy for that, you have enough for a little longer"
    No. If a blade length X draws Y energy, 2 blades that together makes 2X length still only draws 2Y energy. But to make a SINGLE blade that is 2X length, you're looking at something like 100Y, maybe 1000Y, because you have to use a completely different version of the projection technology.
    And that's before looking at the fact that the tech making the containment field supposedly jumps up in size and weight a LOT as well.
    Essentially, you want 10cm extra blade? You're probably looking at something like 10 times bigger and heavier handle, with less than 5% as long batterytime.
    "adjusting the length of the blade"
    Considering there's a whole art of learning how to fight with switching the blade on/off during combat, but NOTHING about adjusting the length of the blade, obviously, there's a blatant limitation to that, most likely in how quickly it can be done.

  • @VegetaLF7
    @VegetaLF7 Před měsícem +4

    So adjustable length sabers have been a thing in the Star Wars universe for quite a while. One of my favorite examples comes from the old Legends continuity. Jedi Knight Corran Horn (one of the post-Return of the Jedi members of Luke's Jedi order) that has what is known as a Dual-Phase Lightsaber, essentially having two crystals that with the twist of the handle can swap out one for the other. It was built using the twist throttle of a speeder bike as the handle to allow the swapping feature. The saber had two different length blades depending on which crystal was "active", with the main crystal having a normal length blade while the alternate one had double-length blade. During one particular duel against an alien warrior clad in lightsaber-resistant biological armor (long story), Corran realized that his blade was struggling to get through the biological armor and came up with a trick to take the warrior down. He got into a moment during the duel where the two of them were circling each other just out of measure and he had his saber pointed right at the warrior's face in a guard stance before twisting his hilt and swapping the blade. Suddenly the blade was twice as long and pierced straight through the gap in the warrior's face gap on his helmet and killing him instantly. (Funny enough I typed this out before Shad mentioned doing this exact thing at 14:00)
    Other examples of different sized lightsabers would be from the game Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. Two of the Dark Jedi you fight in the game (Gorc and Pic if you want to look them up) are of different sizes compared to regular humanoids, one was tiny and one was far larger. Pic, the tiny one, used a smaller saber similar to what we see Yoda use while Gorc, the massive one, used a "light club" which was a massive lightsaber that produced a blade about as thick as your arm.
    As for the Darksaber, it's a problematic addition I've always hated the inclusion of. The original intent of the scene in the Clone Wars where it came from, the Mandalorian warrior using it was supposed to have a Beskad, a sword made out of Beskar that was a common weapon for Mandalorians at the time in the extended universe. George Lucas shot the idea down since it would be visually confusing for kids to see a metal sword stop a lightsaber blade even though the material the Beskad was made out of could do it. So the Beskad became a lightsaber, but to make it stand out and be more unique for a Mandalorian to use it, it was made "sword shaped" and became the Darksaber.

  • @gameovervirus2384
    @gameovervirus2384 Před měsícem +4

    Tl;dr the lightsaber is probably built the way it is because of conflicting needs in combat. It needs to be good at deflecting blaster bolts and dueling, making it compromise. Although there are some genuine upgrades that would make it better (such as Crossguards).
    “Why aren’t lightsabers bigger?”
    Primarily because they don’t need to be. Lightsabers were a weapon built to counter the abundance of blasters. And in most of its history it was used against blaster wielding opponents. Even during Sith/Jedi wars, lightsaber dueling was still pretty rare and most Jedi/Sith were accompanied by non-force users wielding blasters. Clone Troopers, Separatist Droids, Sith Troopers, Bounty Hunters/Mercenaries, etc.
    If a lightsaber was too long you’re more likely to injure allies or civilians around you. And if you’re fighting with other Jedi, it’s more likely your weapons will be entangled.
    Imagine trying to parry arrows with a greatsword while your friend is also wielding a greatsword 3 feet from you. It probably won’t end well.
    Although they do make overall bigger lightsabers with thicker blades for bigger alien creatures. Called a “Great Lightsaber” or a “Light Club”. Which was most notably used by Pong Krell in canon and Gorc in Legends.
    “Why don’t more characters change their blade length mid combat?”
    Those kinds of lightsabers are called “dual phase” lightsabers. They would have a mechanism that would switch between different crystals (which would change the length and sometimes even the color in the old old EU) or would focus the energy through a different facet of the same crystal (like in Darth Vader’s lightsaber).
    The reason they don’t do it mid combat is probably because fiddling with a nob while you’re fighting someone is a guaranteed way to get killed. There are some characters who are confirmed to have buttons with pre-set lengths (such as Darth Vader) but Shad is right in that it’s never actually used mid-combat. Which is a shame considering that the whole damn point of dual phase lightsabers was to be used in combat.
    Plus to get a little meta, “dual phase lightsabers” was introduced as a retcon to explain why lightsabers are different sizes, or would change sizes randomly in say a comic book between panels.
    “Why not make lightsabers thinner for dueling/thicker for parrying blaster bolts.”
    There were actually crystals called compressed crystals in legends which would allow for a narrow thin blade which was favored by duelists. Afaik they only appear in the first Force Unleashed game as a cosmetic option. Which is a shame because it would make perfect sense for the Sith to use. Especially Rule of Two Sith that were rarely in open combat and were primarily dueling Jedi (like Count Dooku).
    Although there is no reason why they can’t use thicker blades, I imagine it’s probably because you’d need a bigger crystal or a larger battery. And the weapon would become unwieldy or at least more difficult to wield.
    “Why not have a lightsaber with a normal length handle that emits 2 blades?”
    Because it was an ancient Sith lightsaber design that either the Jedi didn’t know about or looked down upon. Exar Kuun uncovered the knowledge, modified his single bladed lightsaber, and used that trick to kill many Jedi. Although he was eventually killed, and the knowledge died with him.
    I don’t understand how adding an emitter to the other end of the handle is such an advanced concept that it was “lost to time” (especially since saberstaffs still exist) but apparently it was.
    Although there is sort of an exception in canon. Cal Kestis wields basically a “Bastard Sword” lightsaber. A hand a half hilt that can be split into a normal handle length a smaller shoto off hand lightsaber, that is specifically shown to be only powered by a single crystal.
    “What’s up with the Darksaber?”
    The Darksaber is specifically noted to be created by the only Mandalorian Jedi to ever exist. Perhaps there was some sort of Mandalorian technology and method that caused their lightsaber to be different. The Mandalorians are a warrior culture with an emphasis on weapons. But ultimately I’m just throwing pasta at a wall and seeing if it sticks.
    Why does it have an edge? Because it looks cool. That’s it.
    The flat side can cut things because the entire blade is a plasma weapon. Plus if only the edge was hot enough then it would drag immensely whenever you tried to cut through something, as the sides would immediately absorb the heat of what you were trying to cut through and cool it down around your blade.
    The Darksaber is purely a thing because of “rule of cool” and you aren’t supposed to think about it. The creators of TCW wanted a lightsaber that was a katana and made a half-assed explanation. Which is dumb, and I wish we got an explanation for it.
    “Why no Crossguards?”
    In both canon and legends it’s known as an “ancient” or “archaic” design, implying the knowledge was either lost to time or for some reason seen as outdated.
    Just like with Exar Kuun’s lightsaber, this explanation is just kinda dumb.
    “Why not turn it off and on during combat?”
    They already do do that. It’s called Trakata. It’s noted to be an exceptionally rare and difficult to learn fighting style that almost no one mastered or even attempted to learn. With the only confirmed master being Darth Traya.
    Culturally it was looked down upon by both Jedi and Sith (although it doesn’t make any sense why the Sith look down upon it. Sith are famous for using underhanded or scummy tactics to win). But that’s not the main reason despite what many fans say.
    The real reason why it wasn’t used (even Traya. A master of the form almost never used it) was because in lightsaber combat every. Second. Counts. All force users have some level of precognition during combat as well as enhanced speed and reflexes.
    Every second without that blade is a second you’re completely defenseless. Because unlike greatswords, there is (almost) no armor that can stop a lightsaber. Meaning when you’re using Trakata you are effectively running the gamble of slicing your opponent in half or getting slice in half yourself if you miss time it. It was a very very dangerous art to use in live combat even for the strongest masters.

The "Light Club" was a standard lightsaber built for much larger species, bigger crystal bigger power cell, etc. The other is when a blade could double in length, but those often required the weapon to have two crystals.

    There was mention of lightsaber blade lengths being adjustable in an episode of Star Wars Rebels. Also, I believe that a book mentioned it as well, but I don't remember for sure.

    Closest to this to ever happen comes from No More Heroes 2 where the protagonist gets a longer beam katana. Unfortunately, it's treated as a heavy, slow-moving sword despite it being a lightsaber twice the length of a normal one. Though, the game also has dual beam katanas with one being the size of a wakizashi.
    Edit: Alright, I didn't know of the comics, but I meant seeing the lightsabers (or beam katanas) in use. My bad.

    If it hasn't been done, it usually has a reason. This could be anything from "The beam becomes more erratic and begins to break up", to "The size needs to be a harmonic of a certain wavelength."

    I think there's actively extendable lightsabers in some of the books, but they fall out of favor or are lost to time by the time of the movies.

    I do remember reading something about the reason people can't use light sabers very easily is because there's a sort of resistsnce similar to centrifugal force and the energy being generated actually has a repulsion effect which requires a lot of strength to move or cut through objects. All this in mind if you have the Force to aid your movement you can use it more effectively. Now with length you have a lot more centrifugal force and this requires far more strength or force use to move fast enough to be practical.

    Size, my good men, can in fact matter.
    Shad. I know you want the lightsaber to be a true laser sword. I feel like your two major points could be solved by giving the saber a "thickener" dial and a "enlongenator" button. That gets rid of the narrow blade profile argument and length problem.

    I like the concept of a lightsaber with a fixed and adjustable length modes. The lightsaber always defaults to fixed length when turned on and has a additional switch to alternate between the two.

    Double bladed lightsabers vary in maul's case it was basically two lightsabers permanently joined together and huntress's case. She had two lightsabers that could clip together to form a double blade and in some cases it's one lightsaber that can be ignited from both ends. But like you can't ignite both ends at the same time. So you just switch from one side to the other

    • @vision4860
      @vision4860 Před měsícem +1

      The original idea was that the blade had weight comparable to a normal sword. Later iirc they said that the blade has no weight. However, the more logical solution may be that they have *some* weight, just very little, especially compared to normal blades.
      (And this is all ignoring the strange weight mechanics of the Darksaber since that's an outlier.)

      That's more a limitation of filmmaking. You can't have a sturdy rod that weighs nearly nothing. The rods they had in the OT still broke a lot.

    In the extended universe books, there is a series that focuses on Han and Leia's twins studying with Luke to be Jedi along with other teens. One time when Jayden is sparing with another girl, she goes to block his attack but her saber fails and shuts down mid-swing cause Jayden to slice her arm off near the elbow. I'm pretty sure that is why they don't turn the sabers on and off mid-battle, risk outweighs the reward.

    I own a ‘longsword’ (or hand a half) length lightsaber as my own custom saber, which I prefer to use in something that mixes Form I and longsword style.
    Or I did when I practiced a lot, anyway .
    :-)
    However, as far as reasons why they’re not made that length as standard, or why people don’t use light-pole arms. Moving aside rule of cool, I’m going to suggest that there’s a limit to the maximum blade length before the energy field generated by the crystal is unable to form.

    A game where you can "change" the length of your lightsaber is un Jedi Survivor, when changing the stance to a double handed with crossguard the blade extends a bit further compared to the single handed stances

    Why don't they make more swords like the Darksaber with edge alignment etc... because Jedi are a bunch of prudish traditionalists who don't like change.
    The codes and treaties of lightsaber combat are adhered too as doctrine, forbidden knowledge is sealed away, the Darksaber was one such forbidden item.

    What you guys are talking about is the *"Dule Faze Function."* It's a function that dictates how long a light sabers blade is, notable users if I remember correctly were, Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker, Darth Maul, Darth Tyrannos, Voulo Creash. It's a feature most oftenly used by light saber duelist, like said characters mentioned. Force users who dedicated themselves to using Light sabers in combat or sparing.

    Shad, I give you the answer: it would be TOO CONVENIENT for wiping out entire rooms of enemies, worse still because there would be no delay in switching to a defensive stance to deflect laser shots as it has no weight no matter how long the beam is. Collateral damage, on the other hand...
