- Interviews with Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal "Shaq", Coach Phil Jackson & Lakers majority owner Jerry Buss on why the LA Los Angeles Lakers broke up in 2004. The so-called Kobe and Shaq feud is addressed...why couldn't Kobe & Shaq coexist? Also addressed is why Phil Jackson felt he could no longer coach Kobe. And the reasons why Phil Jackson & Shaq ultimately decided to leave the Lakers are also discussed. Phil, of course, retired and Shaq went to Miami Heat.
The interview was conducted by ESPN and aired on the SportsCenter Sunday Conversation segment with Linda Cohn introducing the story during the episode. The episode aired on December 5, 2004.
Stephen A. Smith interviewed Shaq.
Rest in Peace to Kobe & his 13 y/o daughter Gianna daughter, both whom died in a plane crash on January 26, 2020.
I miss Kobe’s beautiful face and mellifluous baritone voice. RIP MAMBA, Gigi, the other passengers and Dr. Buss. 💜💛💜💛💜💛💜
The media definitely is to blame for how this duo is remembered. The media just made their differences in personalities way too big of an issue. These 2 are still the last team to 3- peat. They got along good enough.
Build you up and tear you down
I don’t think we’ll see another team 3 peat for 10 plus years
If it wasn't that big of a deal they would have stayed together.
@@MrOctober44 It was a big deal, but the media made it worse. Shaq ended up leaving due to financial implications.
I love Kobe, but the narrative he tried to create about what happened from 99-04 is garbage; lakers didn’t win til Phil Jackson showed up and built the triangle offense around Shaq, because Shaq was the better player then, by far; Shaq won 3 straight finals mvps, a league mvp and a scoring title while Kobe won nothing except in every playoffs from 01-04 Kobe attempted more shots than Shaq to the dismay of Phil Jackson; but Shaq was still the lakers leading scorer every year they won rings from 99-02; in 03 playoffs and 04 playoffs kobe increased his fga over shaqs by astronomical amounts and Kobe became the leading scorer, by like 1ppg, but the lakers lost; Kobe said the triangle offense was “holding him back”, he got rape charge, Phil Jackson left, and Kobe didn’t get past the first round for 3 years; Phil returns brings back triangle offense “expert” Derek Fisher to run the triangle and smart euro player gasol, and other rebounders to make up for Kobe’s high amounts of missed shots as Phil and Tex build a new triangle around kobe who ends up with two rings in the triangle offense he claimed was holding him back in 04; The league and Kobe try to push the “Kobe’s chasing jordan” thing, so the narrative about what happened from 03-04 is constantly put out about “shaqs work ethic” hoping you’ll forget and just blindly go with the “5 rings” narrative; Kobe is a top great with bird and magic; but he has 2 finals mvps; he was the best player in a finals 2 times; 2 less than Lebron, and 4 less than jordan;
I REALLY DO MISS KOBE BRYANT MAY GOD BLESS
Same 😥
Can’t believe it
Kobe sounds so mature and articulate. Shaq sounds upset and it feels like he really didn't want to leave.
Dr. Buss made the right decision for the franchise. He was not going to let Shaq hold them down financially. We need more of him in today's NBA!
Absolutely. People have to Shaq was an older center who wasn't known to take care of himself in the offseason and Kobe was a couple years into his prime and he had the best work ethic in the league. It made way more sense to keep Kobe instead of Shaq. The Lakers got two championships in 6 years out of it. I doubt they would have won a championship with Shaq especially since he was rapidly declining.
@@trentonpearson7353wrong O'neal signed an extension for 88 million 3yrs in 2000. The Lakers wanted him to take a pay cut he refused
Damn Shaq really gets defensive at 3:01. Lol
RIP to Dr. Buss and Kobe and Gigi. I miss the good ole Laker days.
This was one heck of an era for us. ✌🏾
Lookin back on this is crazy … RIP BEAN 💛💜 love Shaq & Kobe been Lakeshow 4LIFE!
I really appreciate how forthcoming everyone is about it. No leaking shit to the media they sat down and were real about it
Ehh I wouldn’t say all them were real and forth coming. Dr Buss and Phil Jackson were the real ones. Kobe was trying to be cordial and watched his words because he was the most hated player in the league because of the Colorado incident and the breakup with shaq. Shaq in this sounds very hurt and took it personal but is trying to sound he doesn’t care and is a bit dramatic about it. Maybe it’s his way of marketing the beef
And Stephen a comes off as annoyed as like why am I here? 😂
@@trentonpearson7353What was wrong with Shaq in this? He sounded pissed. 🙁
Of course he did and he is. But you can tell he's trying not to sound like he's hurt by this. Kobe was trying to be cordial and careful with his words. Dr. Buss was like that to and spoke more of a business. Phil was the only real one.@@brandonmorris92
Y’all really dragged Kobe through the mud smh
I feel like he gets too much of the blame yeah he played his part, but Shaq can be an asshole sometimes
I'll never understand how people look back on this and say, "Kobe and Shaq had beef." No, they did not. Kobe had beef with Shaq because he couldn't be Michael Jordan if he was the second option to anyone. And it drove Kobe insane that Shaq didn't have to work half as hard to be twice as dominant as he was.
what you described is beef
I get what you're saying. They didn't have real beef. It was worker's beef. Kobe wanted to pass MJ and it frustrated him that Shaq had the talent but lacked work ethic. While Shaq cared more about being the highest player and being the guy.
Wonderful that's exactly what happened koby what's prove the world he can win championship ring without shaq
I don’t think the media had it out for anyone more than Kobe in basketball it’s honestly crazy until he died they tried to discredit any and everything he ever did it makes complete sense keep the guy in his mid 20’s and let Shaq go to a team that can contend right while he’s still at a high level which only last another two years after this
Facts!!!!
Shaq was in his 30's and he wanted more money so its only right he gave it to kobe but people like nick wright and shannon sharpe want to put the blame everything on kobe but to realize that it wasn't all his fault and on top of that he did lead his team to 3 straight finals and one back to back finals mvp that holds alot of weight more importantly cementing his legacy
Why does this look like a 2pac and Biggie documentary? lol
Young Kobe always reminded me of pac
I know right still.
@lordsafro 1996-97 I was like Kobe was Pac, Eddie Jones was Babyface, Chris Childs was Puff Daddy, and Marcus Camby was JayZ
No one sided with Kobe in those days. Wasn’t until he won 2 more chips and was scoring 60, 81 point games where people started to love him. People loved Shaq more than him. People loved lebron more than him. At some point it changed with the Hes 2nd to Michael nonsense
Definitely nonsense he not even Close to MJ
@@NickSandz-qe5teYup. Kobe is miles above him as a basketball player
Shaq is hilarious man 😂😂🤣
“Mike Krzyzewski? Im Out” 😂
I’m still in disbelief at not really so much the trade but at how poorly or to put it a better way how apparent the front office didn’t try enough to give Kobe a decent cast in that ‘04 offseason. GP and Mailman would have made some noise but I didn’t added Glove for basically potato chips. I have to look at it FaA class but I knew signing Chris Mihm that it was going to be a season to SMH at.
Back when ESPN was watchable
Kobe handled himself very well. Fvck all this media drama
the way Shaq pronounces Coach K lmfao 6:04
All people who loved Shaq.more than Kobe finally was demonstrated Kobe could do much more separate ways. Shaquille Oneal was very important in Lakers but he believed he was superman, and the Mamba was better player, finally, RIP Kobe Bryant
What if Shaq came back to the Lakers? Would things gone different between Kobe, Shaq, Phil, and Dr. Buss?
WHEN U HAVE TO ALPHA MALES ITS A POWER STRUGGLE ON WHO'S TEAM IT WAS
0:05
I remember this like it was yesterday . It just had to end like this Kobe wanted to be the man and not be a sidekick to Shaq.
That's why Kobe shot the Lakers out of the finals. He knew if they won him breaking up the team would make him look real bad. By them losing it made it seem more reasonable
that's a good theory @@joshuafult84
What happen happen and that is that
Damn shame they broke this up. The could have won like 5-6 championships together.
Phil came back a year later...
They need to make a last dance type series for this, it would be so interesting
@@juniortau2677 cant do that without Kobe
And won 2 more championships 🏆💯🔥
You guys need to stop blaming the media and blame the team itself
They would of won 5 together.
Its sooo damn Absurd! MJ was ruthless with his teammates, Him and Pippen , Kerr, etc he rubbed the wrong way! pushing them to be better! fighting with them if they did not see things his way? I can see Kobe attempting to do the same , only difference is. Shaq cannot be intermediated! by ANYONE! Including Jordan! So for Kobe, that would be a failed project attempt! lol. And they still achieved greatness! RIP Legend!
kobe is heartless bro..cutthroat...everybody lying tho..
The problem was simply that Shaq was better than Kobe' and Kobe did not want to accept that fact. And he was younger and more popular.
The lakers lost out on 3-8 more rings due to kobe being super jealous of shak. Thats why kobe will never be better than Jordan or Lebron. Kobe would have been much higher on peoples all time great rankings. Kobe ruined his career and the lakers
It’s not about that it’s about who’s the best he better then lebron and Shaq maybe Jordan that’s debatable
@@dariansmith337 you’re delusional if you think Kobe is better than Shaq
I thought that same way also but you got see it from kobe bryant view he doesn't want be shaq sidekick you got alpha males winning 3 out of 4 championships and they still won without each other and Phil Jackson still came back and went to 3 straight finals and won back to back finals so overall all three parties still succeeded
Got 1 More then Shaq….. #TakeThatToTheBank
@@David-lf6rr how is that delusional? It's an opinion you have millions among millions of NBA basketball fans not just you imo Shaq and kobe is the most lethal duo in NBA history never again will you have 2 alpha males that are incredible one on one players instead of listening to the media is what you saw on 📺 bro Shaq and kobe were like wilt and Michael real talk
The world has been the same since his passing 😥🐍🐐🙏🏽💛💜 RIP Kobe, RIP Gigi, RIP Buss 😥
