    Lange Dotrice also tells Saul, “you’re one of us.” In the penultimate scene when Saul is meeting with the New Vice cop, he even seems to be upset by Lange’s assassination. My interpretation is that by the end, Saul is a sort of double agent - working undercover for New Vice AND newly belonging to Lange’s subversive group of plastic eaters. In the final shot when he’s eating the plastic bar, he’s completely at ease & able to eat it without any pain or discomfort (the only time this is the case in the entire movie). The eating chair even turns off bc it’s not needed. So I think he ultimately replaces Lange as the group’s leader.

    Timlin couldn't have replaced Tensor's organ with the kid's organ. In the movie they have not yet developed cellular regeneration, you can't use a dead organ.

    This raises some good points. I had originally just chalked it up (the “revelation” of Breken’s autopsy) as some kind of dream logic… where the “stereotypical” tattoos that Tenser jokes about for the new organs at the beginning with Capri appear pseudo- magically later in Breken’s body…
    Principally “MOTHER” and the death’s head.
    It is the mother who murders the son, after all, by smothering as film opens… or shall we say as the eye enters the creative matrix?
    Anyway I love how Cronenberg does not quite spell everything out and close all the gaps of the dream, but there is lot more logical consistency, then I thought, as you point out.
    What seems clear is the autopsy realizes Tenser’s fantasy (like the organs that would otherwise “kill him” but who does so… and if in this case the body is the Unconscious, what does that say?
    Much to unpack.

    Oh wow! This would explain why the kids stomach looks so huge and distended during the autopsy! So I agree with your theory that the Timlin character switched his organs with the kids since he said he “was not good at the old sex”. When I first saw the film I thought that that his look of ecstasy at the end could have indicated that he was dying since pain (or the lack of it) and sex had become so inter-related. After seeing the film for a second time today, I still feel like the ending is very ambiguous and open to interpretation.

    Thank you for the great analysis! I hadn’t considered that Brecken’s organs were implanted in Saul by Timlin. This is why I watch vids like this. I will always consider this when rewatching. Brilliant

    I think possibly the husband cheated by having sex (surgery) with the female registrar. The wife, after finding her work of the tattooed organs in the boy realized this, and to test her husband, gives him the plastic at the end to prove this.
    Great point about possible corruption of the wife after sleeping with the two maintenance workers as well. She could be corrupt and trying to actually kill her husband.
    This being said, the movie is not a typical a-z story line, where there is an exact meaning to it. The movie itself is about art, and as an artist myself I can say that the best art has many interpretations and is thought provoking.

    Ok...I think this was a great interpretation of the ending. What I got from the ending is that his "partner" did NOT want to do the autopsy and she thought it was wrong. She even says that this type of thing is consensual. On top of that we realize throughout the movie that people are very turned on by this. It was said in the film "surgery is like the new sex" I believe. So I think that her doing this autopsy on Brecken made her feel almost like a pedophile. This wasn't something that turned her on. Throughout the film we see how these displays of body modification and operations turn her on.
    Now if we go back to the start of the film...the only character that Mortensen tells about the "Mother" tattoo is his parter. I feel she tattoo'd the organs purposely or worked together with Kristen Stewart's character to not only cover up the existence of these plastic digestion organs, but to also spit in the face of Mortensen.
    My last thought about the ending...remember when they went to look at Breckens body? His father offered him a purple plastic bar. If you remember she had a look on her face like she KNEW it would poison him. I think she even mouthed the words "no".
    Fast forward to the end and Mortensen is in pain. It's becoming harder to eat. For SOME reason she had a whole box of these purple bars. She said I think it's time to try this and then feeds him the bar. I believe this was his death. In the scene before they discussed her performing his autopsy. I think this was her way of putting him out of his misery. I also believe that the smile on his face was the smile of his pain ending and him being happy knowing that his best work was about to begin with his demise and her doing the performance art autopsy.
    But....who really fucking knows right??? lmao

    Your interpretation makes sense to me. In the office/intimate scene, Saul/Viggo says right before the cut (paraphrased) “I’m not good at the old sex.” So if they wanted to have sex, and surgery is the new sex, she ostensibly did the surgery as a sex act. I’d have to do a second viewing to see if my recollection of the film matches up chronologically, but you’ve definitely hit upon something here.
    This might be empty conjecture (I need to rewatch the film) but maybe the organs inside the child were transplanted from Saul, and when Caprice saw her own work inside the child during the performance, she realized that Saul “cheated” on her with someone else, therefore her emotional reaction. No visible scarring because the surgery on the child was performed through his back. Not too sure.

    • @convolution223
      @convolution223  Před rokem +3

      that makes sense. I hadn't considered that she'd realize he cheated on her. And even though she cheated on him, it's logical that it would still anger her and she might then kill him with plastic bar.
      And the surgery being done through the back makes sense to hide it, too!

    • @RealJeffTidwell
      @RealJeffTidwell Před rokem

      @@convolution223 I prefer the interpretation that she was conflicted, and when she handed him the bar it could have gone either way and she would have respected his decision no matter what as (perhaps) the ultimate act of love that transcended the relatively petty sexual drama. She filmed it because (if for no other reason) his death would be the ultimate act of art. David Bowie’s Blackstar. I prefer to believe that he survived, was made “whole” and accepted everything (got past his anger and rebellion, understanding his humanity and purpose, etc) at the end of the film, but hey. 😆 I may be an optimist.

    I don’t see her trying to kill him. I just never get that vibe. (Except for maybe early on, when he jokes about her killing him)
    The father who takes the drill bits to the head says, “Did you ever stop to think you’re stopping something great from happening?” or something along those lines.
    I think he stopped removing his organs and was able to digest the plastic.
    I don’t see any potential gain for Stewart’s character to give Vigo those kids organs. Plus, they are child size and not of our normal biology. I think it would kill him.
    I also kinda think that Vigo n the child need to mirror each other, in the regard that they can naturally eat plastic. It further instills what evolution has in store for humans.
    I do like the theory though.

Explains why he was chosen to be a double agent, meaning the govt knew all along. Or.... he just killed himself. The ending is up to you!

    The movie was extremely weird but kept me interested. I think the movie would have been better if the sexual and artistic aspects were removed from it. The movie would still be weird of course but it just didn't need that kind of approach to it. By adding more science to the plot and a spiritual aspect to it would have been enough to carry the film.

    • @convolution223
      @convolution223  Před rokem

      I think the sexual stuff was confused because it wasn't even done erotically most of the time. It was framed as erotic but shot like gore. I think that was only included because of Cronenberg's past success doing that in Crash and Videodrome, but in both of those, they were actually erotic, which, from interviews it turns out was unintentional on his part and more to do with the actors and cinematographer going that route with it. The art-talk went on for far too long too. I agree.

      To be honest, it wasn’t as overtly stimulating as some other body horror / subversive / psychosexual works from DC, but probably inspired a fair bit more cogitation than most of them. David left a lot for the viewer to determine the value(s) of, possibly as an ode to the Art itself that the film dissects.
