Isn't 3-0 what they call a "hitter's count"?
Well...he hit it.
Hitters count is 3-1
@@aro3275 a hitters count is any count in which the batter has the advantage. These counts include, 1-0, 2-0, 3-0(also called a green light), 3-1 and 2-1.
Hitters count is 3-1 and 2-0
@@HueyLewisFan22 and 2-1
@@tighebardwell6308 No its not. It's 3-1, 2-1 and 2-0. You're also wrong about about it being called a "Green Light." You honestly couldn't have been more wrong. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just being honest. Sorry (not really though)...
The one I am more mad at is at the Padres manager for not having tatis jr back. Threw him under the bus and made tatis apologize in front of the media.
Exactly, pardon my language but that was a bitch move
The biggest pussy move I have ever seen by a head coach. I bet he loses the clubhouse after that.
Good luck signing that rookie next round coach Tingler. Worried about ex-relationships you have with the Rangers? Yep Tingler is a tool.
@KiNG DiNGALiNG agree
And that shows the entire clubhouse that your manager doesn't have you back.
The irony, Rangers complaining about this but also holding the record for the biggest rout in MLB history destroying Baltimore 30-3 in 2007... GTFOH!
As an O’s fan, don’t remind me
They also dropped a pop fly in foul ground so their pitcher could have a shot at 200ks last year. They seem kinda hypocritical here bitching about Tatis, he was being a pro and playing hard all game.
Next time a team is up 7+ in the 8th, MLB needs to stop the game and have the losing team forfeit. That's what the Rangers want.
Should be mandatory the next time the Rangers find themselves in that situation, you reap what you sow.
This really is the only reasonable take. If they were up, I don't know, 20? I'd disagree with the criticism, but I'd get it. But 7 runs? Teams have 7 run innings all the time.
C Vandy they didn't, when the rangers put up 30 against the Orioles
@@brendanklim8214 facts, wasnt that 2003, I might be incorrect
Gilby Moody 2007, but a more recent example was when they dropped a foul ball to allow their pitcher to get another strikeout
Tatis is the National League's early candidate for MVP. Take the pitch: Boring! Swing away and hit a grand slam: Priceless!
Well I mean, Mookie Betts is having a pretty unbelievable start too. He's right there in Batting Average and only a couple HR's behind. Also his team is not just 1st place in the Division by a pretty good amount. They also have the best record in Baseball. I'd give it to Betts...

And okay? Whatever that means...
There’s an even bigger unwritten rule to batting in baseball: It’s your job to stop me. I couldn’t care about the Rangers or the Padres. It is what it is.
Rangers are a bunch of crybabies. If u dont want him to hit it, get him out like what ur suppose to. You gave tatis jr. a gift and he suppose to give it back? Man rangers are delusional
If Tatis leaves to sign a huge contract elsewhere, remember this moment. His teammate chastised him like he was a child, and his coaches hung him out to dry.
Which is why SD will always be a basement dweller
@@mrbrianc looks like you were wrong buddy
what was that?
This didnt age well
@@cptsho4621 no it didn't.
As a Ranger fan I couldn’t agree more EAT THE COOKIE!!!!

Thank you 👏🏽
Hey, I have a tip for the Rangers. Be a better baseball team instead of whining because a guy hit an HR in your taxpayer stadium. How about getting better pitching, or furthermore not throwing three balls outside the strike zone. How about not being down 7 runs. How about not throwing a meatball pitch, even if it is 3 - 0. I have no horse in this race, but the Padres are playoff contenders and Rangers are top pick contenders.
Lol @ 'taxpayer stadium' 🤣
That's the most cliche argument a person can make. "Here's some advice. Don't be losing by that much and it won't happen." Literally everyone makes that argument. Lol
Why We Love Film it’s cliche and overused because it’s the right argument.
@@whywelovefilm7079 yeah what else do u expect the arguement to be
@@KimarKurosaski I never said there was anything wrong with it. I was just making a point. That's all. I agree with that 100%
A real coach would say “I didn’t give the take sign”, even if I did.
I see your point, but wouldn’t there be video evidence that he did give the sign?
Parafasio you’d have to know his indicator and take sign signal.
Parafasio the astros would’ve saw that coming..
michael whatley I get that they wouldn’t know the specific sign necessarily, but they would know that Tatis ignored seeing the sign. I think...
Parafasio he didn’t even look at the third base coach
Wow, how can any Padres player have any respect left for TINGLE after he threw Tatis under the bus like that. FIRE HIM IMMEDIATELY!

Yep, if I'm Tatis or any other Padres player I want out. Ridiculous.
danman274 not a good idea. Not justifying Tinglers actions he was just trying to keep respect between ex employers the rangers. I don’t agree with it

Padres lost a game with a 10 run lead in 2019. Discuss
tubenachos actually it was in 2016, in 2019 we won a game we were down by 7 in the 9th
I was at that game
@Jim McCracken underrated comment
As a Padres fan I can assure you, the way our bullpen has played the last few weeks? I’d swing at 3-0 up by 7 points too.
@@stevencramsie9172 Runs not points!! Moron!!
i have a sneaking suspicion that pitchers came up with that "rule".
"You play to win the game"
Not his job to suck too when the other team sucks
Gotta love the ridiculousness of unwritten rules. Most favor pitchers anyways.
*Yo let's drop the competitiveness and don't swing and give me a strike down the middle cuz I can't hit my location rn*
I'm just now realizing that there must be an unwritten rule that the Padres aren't allowed to make the playoffs.
Look at them now you loser
Tingler the *tingle* needs to be freakin fired. Padres are going to lose big time talent as usual because of people like him.
I doubt Buddy woulda threw him under the bus. Green prolly woulda
Bring back Bochy!!!
No manager would have threw their player under the bus like that? Bochy, Torre, Cox they all would have had Tatis’s back and they would have fired back at the rangers for not doing their job.
At this point, I’ve seen more people outraged at the “outrage” than actual people criticizing Tatis for swinging 3-0 when up by 7. None of the fans care. Padres should fire their manager though, your one job is standing up for your players.
The kid even had to apologize...
One of the things that is pissing me off about this too is as a fan of baseball i don’t sit here for 9 innings to watch my team take pitches they should be hitting. I’m here for entertainment
So what happens if he doesn’t hit his 11th, league leading, BOMB, and the rangers make a comeback... are professional athletes now just supposed to stop competing because someone’s feelings are getting hurt?
So watching jomboy earlier it got me realizing that all the unwritten rules in the favor of crybaby pitchers.
Exactly. Had nothing to do with running up the score, was about running up ERA.
If I were Fernando, I would be looking for a new team. No apology. Go up to the GM's and say, "I want a trade."
Wonder why we never fucking won anything ever.
whats sad is the GM gave him some lip too. Do we really want to make the potential All Star feel unwelcomed in San Diego? My Pads have sucked since 99, every run matters to us, especially with a 11-11 record in a 60 game season. What if our bullpen, which has lost alot of games for us, gave up the lead? Where is your unwritten rules then?
as a Padres' fan too, this is the last thing we want from our GM. He needs to be fired. No 2nd chances.
@@jayyyy0284 i dont think he needs to be fired, just stop following unwritten rules that make no sense. Instead of chastising our potential franchise player, how bout we say, hey i understand the unwritten rule, i did give the sign to take a strike but at the end of the day, we have had teams comeback from a 7 lead deficit and beat us so im not mad at Tatis for adding more insurance to help us win the ballgame
@@jayyyy0284 kuz what the GM said and making Tatis Jr apologize just alienates him more from our team. We need him if we want any type of potential playoff run
Sucked since 99, dude you’re trippin, they had a winning record from 04-07.
You have a potentially franchise-changing player with Machado batting behind him. I'd be doing what I could to make him feel good. This unwritten rule sounds like a rule drawn up by losers.
No doubt that this will lead to him leaving San Diego at some point. His manager threw him under the bus. He won't forget that.
Hes the most exciting thing in baseball. Never heard of having to take one down the middle
The *REAL* unwritten rule of baseball is: "I can get mad at anything you do that I feel shows me up, but meanwhile I'll do whatever contradictory crap I want."
If I'm Tatis, I'm out of SD as fast as possible.
When was the last time we had a positive baseball story come out? I get that it's about tradition, but the game is losing its luster. Baseball needs new leadership.
Did anyone get the Untouchables Al Capone quote?
Here’s the deal with unwritten rules.. They just don’t work unless pitchers hit.. That way pitchers don’t go overboard in administering justice..
That's a fair point I didn't think about. If pitchers don't have to bat they can get all pissy and throw at hitters all day long with no repercussions.
The other deal with unwritten rules is... if it was a rule it would be in the rule book if not then it would have to be a agreement by both sides in which tatis didn’t agree. As someone who loved baseball as a kid I can’t even begin to watch it now because it is sooo boring to watch.
In the words of the GREAT MANAGER Jimmy Dugan “There’s no crying in baseball”
The Padres been losing my whole life, I see why. Even when the players do good the managers of the Padres get mad
To paraphrase Buck Showalters response to questions about him having a player steal second despite being up several runs. "Look, if the other team wants to go to the umpire and forfeit the game, we'll stop trying to score runs."
My feeling is that if it’s that late and you’re up big. It’s homerun derby time I’m swinging for the parking lot at everything that sniffs the zone.
"0:00" - Red Foreman
If a pitcher strikes out 20 in 8 innings is he
Gonna try and not strike out any in the 9th ?
I say hit as many HRs as possible
Ten years ago today, August 5th, major league baseball witnessed its greatest comeback in history as the Cleveland Indians rallied from a 12-run deficit to defeat the Seattle Mariners 15-14 in 11 innings. Officially, it only tied the record. So, at a professional level, you are never safe, MLB's unwritten rules are plain stupid
Loved the intro to this 🤣 summed the whole situation up perfectly
Wonderful Rant to start my day, thank you!
I wonder what Fin from the sopranos would say about his Padres and this incident?
If I was Tatis Jr. in this situation I would be demanding a trade after the crap Tingler and Hosmer pulled
If Tatis DIDN’T swing the Padres wouldn’t have made MLB HISTORY this week. Go Padres !
Why would you not want to “run up the score” and bury your opponent? I don’t get it at all.
Get tingler out of here.
Padres are finally stacked with some young talent they might hold onto and this ex ranger is going to reprimand his best stud to defend some ancient unwritten rules and his ex team.... get him out of here
I've almost completely lost interest in baseball this summer and something like this only compounds the fact that my time can be better spent.
All I ever learned about baseball's unwritten rules was from the film "Bull Durham" -- paraphrasing Crash Davis: "NEVER f*** with a hot streak." I think that supersedes the unwritten rules of do's & don'ts when winning big or losing big. Hell, Rickey Henderson doesn't steal 130 bases in a season unless he's stealing a LOT when up 7-0 or down 7-0.
One of the best monologues by Rich Eisen ever.
Explaining baseball to kids is a riot.
My young nephew asked once if a pitcher can throw a hard ball at a batter whenever he's mad, can the batter throw the bat at him if he's mad. When I said no, he asked why not. 🙄😂
His 5yr old logic actually makes more sense than baseball rules.
Exactly. I think I remember something in the Bible about that, you know, being like a child entering the kingdom of heaven and all that.
Thank you for this Rich!! 👏
Lol I’m used to watching you talk about Tua and the NFL but this was funny and so true
Well, not sure if you knew this but in football, if you've got a 9 point lead or more in the fourth quarter and your opponent has a 2nd and 15, you're supposed to back off the line of scrimmage 5 yards to give them a better chance of a first down.
Couldn't have said it better myself, Rich.
There is nothing such as a comfortable lead in baseball unless it is double digits. A pitcher in the pen gives up a few base hits or walks and a clean up hitter hits a grand slam. Three run ball game.
This especially goes for my Padres. We havent been good since 98
That’s so pathetic. If I ever hear of a situation in racing where the leader has a 10 second lead and is told by his/her crew to back it down to not make the margin so big that’s where I would tune out. You build a lead so you make sure no miracle comeback happens. Also hitting a home run is like one of the hardest things to do in any sport so if you can knock one out then take every opportunity to do so. No one should ever have to feel bad or apologize for being better than the opponent
Tingler throwing Tatis under the bus was agregious. Ridiculous.
Who is Jayce Tingler, and why is he a Manager? I'd be surprised if he makes it to next season
Eat the damn cookie. Great metaphor R.E.
I always watch to the end, lol love the show!
You take the pitch to avoid hitting into a double play (I think there was 1 out at the time) and possibly take a walk instead. If you aren't worried about that, then swing away.
Thank you
The real unwritten rule in baseball in a large lead situation is... The umpire widens the strike zone. That’s the unwritten rule “but they don’t have to follow it”.
The thing about the 3-0 count is because that you don't swing because if he can't throw a strike, you have a free base. Coaches say that unless you know you're hot, or you know the ball is going to go out, you don't swing. Tatis checks both those boxes, so him swinging shouldn't have been a problem.
This is the most baseball-like thing i’ve ever heard
You play to win the game ! -Herman Edwards
Rangers fan here. I wasn’t mad at Tatis. I was mad at my team for getting in a position where this could happen. 4 times in a row no less.
Pitch and field better.
If someone gives you a pitch, you slap that crap outta the park.
Then you wonder hockey gets more respect than baseball at the moment.
The thing is that pitcher knew the unwritten rule was he takes a strike so threw it over the plate for one because the guy can't pitch a lick.
As an ohio state fan I'm inherently wired to hate Eisen for the simple fact he's a michigan man but He is the only reasonable, enjoyable, and knowledgeable talk show host.
I feel as though everyone in this situation chose the absolute worst options. Firstly complaining to the media that you were getting spanked so your pitcher digs himself into a hole 6ft deep and gets buried by the opponents (arguably) best player. It sets a terrible example for the players of the rangers organization as now they may feel more inclined to whine and cry like their manager every time they play inferior baseball. Secondly I hate that the padres manager basically threw Tatis under the bus instead of just saying something along the lines of "boo hoo you got smoked tonight and that's something we ought to feel ashamed of?" As well as Tatis himself apologizing. Apologize for what? Trying to beef his stats so that when contract signing day comes he can get a larger sum.
When was the last time the Padres were significant? I don't know either. You'd think they'd relish the success.
Time to demand a trade 🤔
I have a gut feeling he isn't gonna return to San Diego once he can go into Free Agency
60 game season he's gonna see 1/3 of 3-0 counts. How many more pitches is he gonna see this yr?
Trevor Plouffe pointed out that the vast majority of these "unwritten rules" are from the angle of protecting the feelings of the crybaby pitchers.
Maybe we'd remove these from the game if we labeled them accordingly. "Crybaby pitcher rules", "Snowflake pitcher rules"...
The Padres need to fire that coach and get someone who wants to compete and beat the living hell out of every other team by 30
You play to win no matter what the score any manager who says otherwise shouldn’t be a professional manager
Isn’t this what every teams want? A player that can produce??
I'm a baseball guy, and this was the first time I've ever heard of this "unwritten rule". Also, it's the major leagues....man the F up. This isn't 10U travel where some teams can run all over another.
I wonder if Mike Trout would've done the same thing?
"Man stands alone at the plate" lololololololol
How do you throw 3 balls in a row after walking 2 people in a row. And then get mad that the MVP race leader didnt let you groove one down the middle cuz darules. And it didnt even seem like the pitcher cared that much. It was the manager
I was once a Rangers fan, when Nolan was there. That's changed.
So you’re a fair weather fan
This is ridiculous, how dare his coach not back him up?!? These pitchers are moodier than my gf is for 1 week every month, get over yourself and the unwritten rules. Pitch better and there wouldn't be a 7 run deficit. MLB needs to prop up its stars instead of putting them down.
It's a damn shame that man shares a kindhearted weirdo that is Chuck Tingle.
Do you think Mantle, Bonds, or McGuire would sit and watch a 3/0 pitch..... Do you think anybody would have had the balls to admonish those guys. HELL NO!!!
To be honest I would feel more offended as a pitcher to have a batter throwing me a bone and letting the 3-0 pitch go by then actually try to put it in play. That's just my opinion
His peanut gallery interjects wayyyyyy too often. They need to understand that no one is here for their takes.
It always seems to be middle relievers that get all up in arms over this stuff
It’s not an unwritten rule. That’s why this is controversial. It’s never been an unwritten rule to not swing at a 3-0 pitch. I always swung at 3-0 pitches and as a pitcher, every decent batter did the same.
Well said Rich. Well said.
When I played baseball as a kid, I was told to take 3-0 pitches. However, the explanation I got was that I could either take the strike but still keep working the pitcher, or I could ultimately take a ball and therefore walk. So I was told it was strategy, not this bullshit that I’m hearing professionals bitch about.
Let's face it.. MLB doesn't want a black guy to beat the white guy (trout)
Although it was done, it was under all this bs.. couldn't even celebrate it.. classic MLB smh
Does this mean MLB will institute a “skunk” rule?
I would turn in the villain I’ll do it again
I'm Jr. I will strike out LOOKING every at bat till the end of the season!
Eisen banging his head - Classic! That is baseball in a nutshell. Any manager / coach of a team is supposed to protect young players. The last thing you do is throw the player under the bus! Especially when the player does something positive!
If I were a ticketbuying Padres fan, I would demand a refund unless that manager got fired for those comments.
This would not have been an issue if Mike Trout hit the ball.
Baseball needs enforcers that come in as pinch hitters after someone "breaks the unwritten rules". So if the pitcher wants to hit the next guy with 85 to the ribs a lumberjack comes out next and that pitcher is gonna be swallowing his own teeth. Get rid of these things that make baseball no fun.
He already hit one out earlier... the pitcher wasn’t giving him gold... until.. shortened year, swing away kid!!
Agreed! This could have been an incredible moment of welcoming a new superstar to the national attention; and the Rangers has to be petty and childish and ruin it all. I hope they lose the rest of their games. Absolutely pathetic!!!
How about the unwritten rule that a manager has his player's back? Weak move making Tatis Jr apologize after the game. I would be leaving SD as soon as possible if I were him
