This is a fantastic song, one of my favorites. Even as a filthy heathen this song fills me with a sense of pride for the Swiss Guard.

Holy Roman empire was basically a self proclaimed medieval continuation of the ancient Rome.
But more than anything it was basically just Germany (which wasn't united at the time) and some of its neighbouring countries, like the Czech kingdom. The lands belonging to the Holy Roman empire changed drastically over the centuries, often depending on which European ruler sat on the Roman throne at the time.
Italy, despite being the cradle of the original Roman empire, was more often than not independent. Holy Roman emperor had to be coronated by the pope but it wasn't that easy - between changing popes and the disunited Italy constantly infighting, etc.

Yes, but the "empire's" ruler was called Roman KING, from the time being elected (by majority of 7 electors) until he performed "Roman ride" going to Rome (through northern Italy which was even bigger mess by that time than Germany) and letting him being proclaimed EMPEROR by pope... this could sometimes take many years waiting for right moment...

This song is very special and means allot to most Swiss fans, since the Swiss Guards are the Soldiers responsible for the pope and his safety. I live in the Eastern part of Switzerland and my dad origins is from the UK, so my dad was just 8 years old when WW2 started and was lucky not needed to join the battles. Greetings from East-swiss countryside, Flawil.

Basically, the armies of mercenaries were gathered to fight on Rome's behalf only to then be told Rome had called for peace and the organizers of said mercenaries kinda backed out without paying them.
So if Rome wouldn't pay the mercenaries willingly, they would raid it and get their own pay.
Think of it like... your boss calls everyone in to work during the weekend and promises overtime pay, but as everyone is working, the company just suddenly goes bankrupt and all the people at the top split. Nobody is getting paid so the alternative is to grab everything not nailed down.

The Holy Roman Empire did not control Rome (most of the time). It was supposedly the spiritual successor of the Roman Empire, but in reality it was a conglomeration of German-speaking duchies, lands and principalities centred around Vienna. It was founded by in Northern France by Charlemagne in the year 800 and was in itself a political plot endorsed by the contemporary Pope. After centuries, the Holy See (official name for Vatican even today) controlled all of Central Italy and the city of Rome. Political maneuvers like the ones Indy talked about over the following centuries secured its independence from the massive French and Austrian (Holy Roman) empires to the north. In was not until the 1870s when so-called Papal States were forcefully incorporated into what became know as the Kingdom of Italy. Forceful character of incorporation and loss of all privileges Popes enjoyed for centuries as powerful rulers of Papal States meant that the Church and Italy maintained tenuous relations for the following six decades. In fact, it was only under Mussolini when the Italian government and the Pope could see eye to eye and agree on some kind of Papal independence from increasingly secular Italy. This is how modern Vatican came to be.

This summary kinda ignores the fall of the Charlemagne empire and the sundering of the realm in 3 that led to the 1000 year feud of Germany and France.
The Holy Roman Empire was actually founded by the third split off kingdom once it passed to local German rule instead of a Frank and Otto I. fought back the invaders from the East on the pope's behest. For this victory Otto I. got the right to refound the empire under imperial crown as the Holy Roman Empire (of German Nations). The of German nations is important here. It was a more "mobile" imperial crown as Germany was rather disjointed and fractured and a lot of diplomatic travel had to be done to keep the vassals in check. The Habsburgs took the crown FAR later after they won the strife against the family of Luxembourg for supremacy... by them dying. It was a German Empire that would be a major influence in Europe until Napoleon destroyed it and took the imperial crown... until Germany took it back after the German Unification and lost it after WW I for the European empire to be finally dissolved.
The old rivalry for the imperial crown between Germany and France was officially laid to rest in the 50's when both joined into the pre-cursor of the European union to link their economies and prevent future wars by becoming intrinsically reliant on each other... more or less.

The Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire. It was a loose collection of dozens of countries mostly in what is now Germany and surrounding territory. But they would elect one ruler to kinda rule them all. Some of the Italian countries were part of it at different times but the Papal state never really was.

Yes, it is a sin to break the solo.🧐, but to history now.
Roman Empire of German Nation was the full title. It was adopted in early Medival times. You have to read about it, because it's a LOT to cover.
Watican is NOW a separate entity, in the period this song is based, it was a part of Rome. Again, a lot of history behind it.
Swiss Guard, yet another history homework. Very interesting. There was a special selection to become one. And until today they're not just honorary, they're real guards, trained professionally.
Wow, I got tired just writing all this.
The song is one of my favorites also. It has a very smooth flaw to it, and it's easy to sing with.🎶

This intro in the history video has to be one of my favourites together with Ghost division. Pär (Pair) ;) sitting there in some random armor saying random stuff about crusades for no reason at all. Almost as good as "Welcome to Sabaton history, my name is Erwin Rommel. - And I'm Rommels secretary... Candy." :)
And another strange sort of connection with Ghost division: When you listened to that one you said you had a problem with the song because of the topic. I don't have that problem with Ghost division, I have that with this one instead.. Not saying that religion is worse than nazism, it's obviously not. But in Ghost division they don't talk much about the ideology, everything is about the story of the division. Here they have littered the song with christianity so I have a very hard time seeing past that.. I know it's really good musically, I can hear that. But I still really can't like the song.
And the choreography in the great tour video? You can't have a metal band if you don't do that one every now and then. I think it's illegal. :)

The Holy Roman Empire was neither holy or Roman. Wasn't much of an empire either. It was basically Germany with delusions of grandeur. I also find it interesting that much of the stuff Martin Luther complained about were things Pope Clement was in the process of *correcting* when Charles V had his hissy fit.

It's 1527, the Roman Empire has fallen since 1000 years ago at this point.
"the Holy Roman Empire" has nothing to do with Rome nor the Vatican.
The Holy Roman Empire is what germans call the First Reich, the first German Empire.
When Indy says "The Imperial Forces" he is talking about the Germans.
