Since Corden took the reigns as host in March 2015, he has quickly become known for generating buzzworthy viral videos, such as Carpool Karaoke." - Zábava
You know how big of an upset that mic issue was when it made James Hetfield, who is literally one of the nicest guys you'll ever know, angry.
He did throw the mic down. One time while they were playing, and he knocked the new mic over once they were done. There is still some fire left in him, don't ever doubt about that.
heini92 He knocked the mic down from what I saw twice. Once with the guitar and I guess that they must've told him it works and he was on it again. It goes out and at the end he kicks it down.
It's not that there is still fire left in him ,he is fire and he always was and will be, but he contains it very well.He was a fucking beast on and off stage in his 20's and 30's,and he could be one now but he's grown to be wiser and more chill with age.Quitting alcohol helped a lot too.
Back in the 80s James would've taken that mic and shoved it in Cordons ass.
He threw his guitar off to the guy on the side too lol.
James had all rights to be livid. Even I was pissed off that the mic didn't work.
you could tell he was really pissed...I saw him kick the mic stand right after the song
Damn agreed.
Anton Tati I was pissed I had to sit through all that shit just to see my favorite band and the mic doesn't work
Anton Tati so was I
We all were Anton. We all were.
I like that Lars' worst gig memory isn't when James WAS LITERALLY SET ON FIRE in Canada!!!!!
Matthew Wang but at least getting set on fire is pretty metal
dude gets shit on for being a dick but was the 1st to foght for artists rights and formed a metal band BEFORE he learned to play drums...dude made himself a rock star = right to a bot of arrogance imo
They remembered that episode when they were rehearsing with Gaga, you can check it out at the very end of this: czcams.com/video/jLZ2P_QiLZo/video.html
Yeah but they couldn't see Lars playing the drums for 15 minutes
Right! That kind of pissed me off actually.
They should have played So What and Last Caress
orkun ozturk now I have to watch that performance from 96 at the european vma :-)
Those are cover songs not Metallica songs.
Daniel P'Lopez Did lady gaga sing own song? Metallica does not have to sing own songs
It's a reference to the EMA's in 1996 where they played it as a massive "fuck you" to the EMA. The performance was edited out in future reruns
Eusebio Rodriguez who cares who cares about you??
An angry Hetfield is what made Metallica sweet.
end of song - James kicks over mic and throws guitar over the amps. Thats metal!
no, that's anger. Metal is about music, not about destroying your stuff. I mostly saw those kind of things coming more from the glam rock bands.
You're metal blows.
M Huh you are metal blows?
No, I am metal blows!
Mario Dupuis good metal comes from anger
I would imagine the biggest technical mishap during a Metallica show would surely have been when James almost got burned alive by the pyros.
Vlad Pandur It wasn't a technical issue, the pyrotechnics guy simply didn't explain where the flames are going to be well enough. James misunderstood his directions and stepped into the fire.
I came for that comment, lars wtf?
I'm surprised James didn't fight fire with fire.
@@Evelina_412 oh, i thought he was just confused by all the flashing lights and stuff and got disoriented. I believe thats what he said in the “a year and a half in the life of metallica” documentairy
james being set on fire wasnt a technical issue it was a pyrotechnic issue and a freak accident
dude...all the grammy artists lip sync so they probably just forgot to turn the Mic on for an actual band that actually sings live...fucking hate society ...poor metallica...metal and mainstream dont mix
Thomas white and we like it that way
i want to know what they base that on and see some data. Not that I deny it but "most popular" is subjective unless you've got data to make an objective conclusion.
Thoma White you are 150% correct Metallica and Lady Gaga are the artists the sings live.
Jose Gonzalez Lad Gaga? Is that derision?
yes Lady Gaga...she never lipsyncs...she sings live even when she is sick. So if u didnt know that she always sings live...then do some research and then ask questions.
Technical Difficulties? sounds like Paul Gilbert's doing.
Argin ARGIN Underrated Comment...
Not too many guitarists watching this vid.
Probably wanted them to get out of his yard.
I saw Marco play with Guthrie, and it blew my tits off. Also one time I met Paul Gilbert :)
guilty gear x song
I don't blame James for being Angry. At least he didn't stop the show and started to curse. He kept going.
He first knocked the mic down with the guitar. And then at the end he kicked it.
There's a clip where Metallica was performing and James' mic went out and he tapped it a few times, nothing and knocked it down and moved to another mic. It has to be frustrating when things don't work out. He's human.
Here's the thing though, the concert you are referring to (their Through the Never concert), the mic issue was staged, it purposely failed and it was a part of the show. This, however, was not planned and was an actual technical error, which shouldn't happen anywhere, especially at the Grammys.
MetallicaRules ok. But the Mics have failed before. Look it up. However I'm with you on this performance. Because the none of the Mics worked. And that explains James blowing of steam because at the Palladium show he even said it. That they were there to let the anger out and it was ok to be angry.
PiazzaGurl axel rose would
PiazzaGurl he should have pulled an Adele, swear on tv and start over lol
Jason Shelton He wasn't gonna do that. Because that usually happens when they stage things. If things mess up for real, he keeps going. Plus I doubt the Grammy's would've gave him those extra minutes back. Grammy's give Zero Respect.
Lars should had give James some paper and a pen in that moment
And Justice For All 2?
Lets hope James wrote a couple of ideas down. We all love our Jamez Hatefield

jethro tull sabotaged the mike.
Chris L maybe Mustaine did it in revenge for the Grammys playing Master of puppets during Megadeths awards acceptance
"I understood that reference"
I needed this today. Do not know why but I am dying over here laughing. Just imagining that was the cause is amazing.
Chris L or Dave Mustaine
That would make it 2-0 Tull lmao
You could telll James Was Furious ,something shady went down between this and them playing Metallica when Megadeth was winning their grammy
Megadeth is better lol
@@sfdtwg6612 actually, it depends on who you ask. It's all subjective man.
James doesn't really have beef with Dave and why should he care they won a grammy. I'm more pissed off Metallica wasn't put in the Metal category but hey, it would have kept Megadeth from their Grammy. I wished they both would have won. Hardwired and Dystopia are killer records.
Shit did go down but Megadeth deserved their Grammy.
@@sfdtwg6612 naw
Such a great spokesperson for Metallica!!! It was an amazing performance even with the technical issue and I love Metallica so much and Gaga even more!!!
Crazy Nerf
"And Gaga even more"....
Dude I respect everyone's opinions...but I'm just genuinely curious (don't take this rudely) as to how you can enjoy Metallica, a diverse, advanced, interesting, talented band, and also "love Gaga".
I may personally not be a fan of Gaga's music, but I recognize she's incredibly talented and does have a good taste in music (she's well known as being a metalhead) so I give her a ton of respect. A lot of people also simply have a taste of music that varies immensely between genres so I can see why someone loves both Metallica and Gaga
How is Gaga not talented? o.0
And how does loving Metallica make you exclusive? I LOVE Metallica but if I like a pop song it's going on my playlist =P
I would love to see that footage of James being pissed! Haven't seen him like that in forever.
For James, live peerformace must be excellent, not just because of the bands reputation, but the experience of the fans, he knows how significant is for a fan to go see their favorite band, and really pisses him off, when this experience gets perished for a technical difficulty.
Lars is a real pro at telling stories for TV shows like this
James kicking the mic and throwing his guitar at the end is the most pissed off, rock'n roll heavy metal thing he has done in 15 years!!!
Worst technical mishap in Metallica's career? CERTAINLY not the pyro fireball that almost killed James... definitely the time the drum riser stalled for 30 seconds...
everyone knows that story. nice to hear something new. first time i heard that drum story
That was nothing technical...
That was James’ mistake. The pyro obviously was working as it should have been. Therefore, not a technical issue.
@jonny j It was a technical issue because the setlist was changed last minute. The song the pyros were supposed to be used in shared the same time slot with a swapped song that wasn't supposed to have pyros, James, thinking he was playing a safe song, walked in a dangerous area.
This was also something of a lighthearted show. Something that’s funny in hindsight fits in.
The grammys always fuck over rock bands when they perform
not rock bands, metal bands. they're good to 'rock' bands in general
Will Baker they fucked over Queens of the Stone Age and put a airline commercial mid way in their performance
Probably accidentally. Generally they're fair to rock music and allow better rock representativeness. But consistently for decades they have been unfair to metal, rarely if ever give awards to metal bands(when they do, its usually before it after the actual ceremonies), rarely have metal bands play at the ceremonies or have a best metal album category, when they do they just have metallica or a very small handful of metal bands here and there, they ignore most metal bands and subgenres and even though often other bands release better metal albums that do better with metalheads they just gave the shittier lighter metal bands or metallic, they have for decades been unfair to metal even though metal in one if the most popular music genres over the globe they have never shown much if any regards or respect to it and its fans
And even though there are TONS of metal bands from various metal subgenres that have far more skill, originality, and work much harder to put forth their musical artform than most of the other genres if music and unoriginal lacking in genuine talent music genres they push..the mediocrity and shallowness of most of it....and lack if intelligent subject matter of Said genres and even though metal has consistently had far more bands over the decades with intelligent, thought provoking lyrical subject matter.
Their to commercial and oh wait nevermind but oh I don't need 20 minutes of beyonces stuff that was boring
Well, I thought the performance went swimmingly other than that. It was pretty epic seeing James and Gaga belting into the same mic
Love Metallica and well done to James massive fan of the guy Metallica are a massive inspiration and Lars is a big inspiration to me as a young drummer
I wasn't watching the TV show. I watched it later online with James' vocals and it was AWESOME
0:34 damn imagine if James wrote a song right there and then! lol but in all seriousness I love Hardwired and besides the mic, there was a great kinetic energy to the performance. Shame that James got screwed like that.
Billy Crystal is that you?
Took the words riiight outta my brain
gotta love Lars!
Love him for what? For being an idiot and inviting a shitty pop star Lady Gaga to perform with Metallica?
When he asked Lars about technical difficulties, I half expected him to say: "well, there was this time we set James on fire..."
Mark my words: There was no hiccup!
The Grammys sabotaged Metallica, as they have tried to undermine the metal genre ever since Metallica lost to Jethro Tull. I haven't witnessed ANY problems of that scale at the Grammy Awards in many years, and there were no sound problems before or after Metallica played, and you tell me that was "just a little hiccup"??
If this really was just a mistake, then why didn't they fix it quickly? They could've easily replaced the mic, or fixed whatever problem there was with it, but they didn't 🤮
Michael Holmgaard EXACTLY. The Grammys have absolutely zero respect for metal and rock. Real rock, not something else disguised as it.
And they played metallica's master of puppets absolutely shit for megadeth. Probably just trying to bring the anger out of metalheads to try to make us all look angry whilst simultaneously making the music itself sound bad.
Guy Sky Im gonna eat a hat if they ever let Maiden into the Grammys! But man, if they really nailed it and showed metal from it's best side... would be cool. But if they are willing to fuck up Metallica, then think about what they would do to Maiden?! =_=
Metallica isnt metal anymore, they are hard rock and what the fuck are they even doing with lady gaga.
Cliff Burton would be rolling in his grave at how shit they have become
+Kelvin Steiner Who's to say that if Cliff was alive today they would sound any better? Cliff wasn't some master god of music and songwriting, just like any other musician if you write music as long as Metallica has it gets hard to keep putting out something new and fresh. The new album is fucking awesome, and the whole Lady Gaga thing isn't some blasphemous act against the metal world lol stop being such a baby! Embrace all metal fans even if they are Lady Gaga or a angry teen, they are helping keep rock and metal alive
I wish there was a video of that
80s/90s James wouldve thrown the mic into the crowd and put his guitar through Lars' bass drum before tipping over all of Lars' cymbal stands
It's karma. They shouldn't have turned down Jason's bass on Justice.
this actually made me laugh hahaha
Hal Hercules you right =)
Hal Hercules lmao
They had it comin'
karma sure took its sweet time lmao
It was a shame. Should have done an Adele and started over. 😄 the rest of it once it worked rocked.
I was aghast that this mic issue was allowed to just happen. I mean, this is THE GRAMMYS, this kind of amateur hour tech glitch is beneath them, supposedly. And it didn't get fixed asap like it should have been. I hope that the Grammy tech crews are expiring from shame. I would be. James has every right to be pissed. And where was the intro for Metallica?!?!?!? They are not Gaga's back up band!
The fire ON The drums too another issue of technical difficults.
Hopefully we will hear James thoughts soon enough.
as a former roadie/stagehand, the mic issue should have taken a minute to fix. a minute is being generous, and only because of the amount of people on stage.
it was intentional. as was playing master of puppets when dave went up for his award
The show must go on... what a moment... Lady Gaga was wonderful, I loved her performance. These are professionals playing live music, just awesome, despite of the producer
At least there's a video with proper audio for that grammys
Just because you like a type of music shouldn't make you deaf to other types of talent no matter what type. You don't have to like certain music but you must respect the talent and not be so butthurt when they try something new. No one but Gaga could have pulled this off. Respect
Lars is ultra cool man. Not nearly the Metallica nut I used to be ( I stupidly have tattoos lol) but this guy is sharp.
That soundguy from Grammys have to know that James is upset somewhere xd dont mess with papahet
I love that audience sound and there are like 12 people in the audience.
Dave Mustaine sabotaged the mic, bacause when Megadeth won in the Metal genre, the Grammy's crew played Metallica...
I think Dave laughed it off because Megadeth would be too complicated for the house band to learn.
Erik Blazen hell yeah man
Even their easy stuff is more complex than any Metallica song
Garbage Gang I don't see how, say, A Tout Le Monde, is more complex than Frayed Ends of Sanity. Still, both bands are actually a lot more simple than their fans make them out to be, which doesn't negate the fact they are both absolutely amazing and have their clever moments here and there. As for Dave, he was just laughing off a slightly enraging moment.
it was done on purpose. the industry has been purposely taking rock music out of the mainstream since the mid 2000s. they don't want any music that has an anti-view of what they are trying to push on to the public. rock music in the past had real effects on govt. led agendas such as wars and promoting global views which rock music lyrics were against a lot of the time. that's why in the past 10 years there has been a real push to limit the public exposure of rock music in general and promote(for lack of better words) pop tart and hip-hop music which 99 percent of the time would deal with sex and relationships. at the same time they could also promote the destruction of the family unit with these no talent pole dancing mega-stars' negatively toned lyrics and lifestyles all the while assuring a reliance of the individual on the state.(as opposed to the family). it also helps the so called producer/song writer to have massive financial gains through consolidation of an industry that used to have to pay the instrumentalists, band members, producer, mixer, et al. which is why a song by say -taylor swift will sound like a song by Katie perry. all minimalist musical ventures created by one man behind a computer, unfortunately. 'rock is dead they say'- there has never been a more true song lyric. i read an editorial by a so called govt. insider a few years ago dealing with all of these things and would not believe it. now, i say- how could i not believe it. where is the rock? where i live, two of the rock stations on the radio have switched to sports talk shows. the one rock station left plays nothing of what used to be considered rock only 10 years ago. its all beat driven noise with screeching screaming vocals on top of it. no diversity at all. a shame. and we used to make fun of 80s music........ok, ready for the bashing
Say anything about him, but Lars is a great storyteller.
I have never Seen James throw a guitar until now
Axl Rose would have said "F this im going home" and left and there would be mayhem and riots
I knew he was pissed when he booted the mic at the end and threw his guitar
Am I the only one surprised that a conversation about technical difficulties had no mention of the time James was literally set on fire?
I also thought only the seasoned professionals that Metallica are, could rock right through this.
In Metallicas career .... just a small speed bump .... they care about their tour .... can't wait to see them
You would think James getting lit on fire would be the most serious technical difficulty... I mean, Axl did start a riot after that. But I guess that story is a downer.
Wasn’t really a technical thing but more of a human mistake. Its also a pretty well known story so it was nice hearing about the drum thingy. Still i know what you’re getting at.
That seriously annoyed me. The only major Rock performance and the Mic/guitar didn't work for him. They failed to even properly introduce them, they were given a miniature stage, and the list goes on. I'm probably not going to bother with the Grammy's anymore.
Hell, James even had Mic issues in their Movie "Through The Never" during "Ride The Lightning". He was pissed.
Ulrich loves that spolight. Maybe it's why we love him too.
Is that Katherine Heigl? She kinda looks like the dude from Eraserhead in this video
0:56 LMAO her face
i was sitting really close to stage left.. it was crazy how pissed off James Hetfield was.. kicked the mic stand twice, and threw his guitar at the end. What made things worse was.. they did not even announce Metallica before their act, they only introduced Lady gaga
Metallica is one of the best bands I've ever heard but Ian Anderson is a genius
BEST PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGHT, EVEN WITH THE MIC FAIL. True artists do not restart the song....ADELE should take a page from Lady Gaga and the boys from Metallica.
I guess the Mic didn't work since we did not hear them introduce Metallica either.
I would have thought James almost burning his hand off would be the paramount in terms of on stage technical difficulties. Seems to me a bit worse than having to drum a couple songs under the stage in front of the british press, but that's Lars for you.
Nothing about James being set on fire , when Lars is asked about any technical that stood out he most.
leah gannon it really wasn't technical I thought James wasn't seeing where he was going
I thought for second that they covered RacerX at the Grammys LOL.
If anything it shows that Metallica doesn't lip sync.
l love metallica
lars england story about the second kit why didnt he just go back to the other kit that was on the stage???
it was Dave that turned off his mic before the show
The concert with the fireball taught them two things.
Sure, the obvious lesson is remembering where your marks are.
But the second lesson is that the show must go on. Imagine if the mic problem had happened on live tv to Axl Rose. Would he have called for a commercial?
Remember the concert turned into a riot because Axl quit after two songs
James! They should have let Metallica perform again! You let Adele curse on stage "TWICE" and then start over again. Grammys was just a bunch of Fk-ups Fkn-up everything.
CeroneGames Go its suck but Adele is whats popular now (actually i like Adele so this goes for people that dont like 2010s music) and Metallica is not mainstream. They are still super popular but if you go up to some average person on the street and ask them if they know who Metallica are or know one of their songs, 7/10 they wont be able to tell you.
And besides, Grammys have always disliked hard rock/heavy metal. So big surprise
I wish there was video of the Grammys aftermath with James losing his shit
Lars: "Back in the days of Wembley Arena...."
Me: It's still here!
nice sofa 👌
I would think the biggest mishap was James' front side and face getting set on fire, but, sure, that's bad, too.
nice story lars. you da man
2:35 Woman has the "wtf is a drumset" look
Would James being burnt that time fall under a technical difficulty ???
Relatable
I'd say the biggest stage mishap was James catching on fire...but hey that's just me...
I think Jame's hand burning down to the bone was a worst technical difficulty there, Lars
I think it should have happened because then James and lady gaga shared the mic and it just made it great
Really Lars? That story was the paramount one that comes into your mind? Not James going up like a fireball on stage due to standing directly under a flamethrower?
Really?
If you’re in the business long enough, eventually you’ll relive a scene for real from This Is Spinal Tap.
THEY WOULD HAVE PLACED THE TRACK OF THE VOICE ON THE VIDEO AND PUBLISH THAT VERSION ON CZcams AND SAY GOODBYE TO THE GRAMYS BROMIST!!! GOODLUCK.
Why can't Lars come up from under the stage again? That was cool as hell
I haven't seen any Lars Ulrich hate comment, WTF!? 🤣
@ 3:20 James getting burned by pyrotechnics?! BTW Dave (Mustaine) was across the street getting coffee and a sandwich during MetaliGaga.
*drum sound on st. anger’*
0:16 *UMM....*
Go Lars
I imagined Metallica's biggest technical boo boo would be the time Hetfield stood on top of the pyrotechnics and set himself on fire!
The mic not working was the last thing wrong with that whole scenario.
After it's all over, it turned out to be a kinda "Real" moment. Lady Gaga and James on the same mic. Gaga saves the day!
0:47 "the hoe must go on" use the captions and you'll see it Lol
We all know that it wasn't an issue. It was clearly Dave Mustaine
Thought it was Billy Crystal from the thumbnail.
James' mic was supplied by Napster
Metallica can teach Mariah Carey how to keep going, like a professional, when there are technical problems. I love Metallica.
Uuggh Dahhhling Metallica should take a note from Mariah how to be the greatest vocalist+greatest songwriter all of the time 😒
Sure, as part of an audience, I would've really enjoyed it if I couldn't hear the musician I paid to see....NOT!!!! Sure, this wasn't a concert, nevertheless, it's UTTER BS to say that anyone enjoyed not hearing JAMES HETFIELD!!!
James Plz Do A Karaoke with J Cole
