Zachary Scheunemann you the real MVP

Zachary Scheunemann good lookin out.
Lars is smart. There’s a reason he has always done most of the interviews. He was also right about Napster. 20 years later the business of selling music is dead. Fans who don’t play don’t care, but, the fact is these guys and MANY others don’t bother making records anymore and that’s the real tragedy
True fans pay
Wow. He is so articulate in answering the questions. Respect that. Lars is the real reason why metallic is able to carry on playing this long. He brings so much sense to bear on all the other band members.
That's because he came from an era when schools actually did their job
@@doseofreality420marianetti2 He s not american also
Lars is great, I mean all the negative things people say about him can only be traced to music. He as a person is not a bad guy at all. I mean we aren't perfect either right

LMFAO i can't tell if it's true
Lmao. I believe it.
Lars is the one who's paying the price with his body..so much respect. They lived the whole rock lifestyle, now they literally live to play. Pure dedication and love!
People criticize, me included when i was younger before i had others experience.
I mean , i always defended Lars on what he did on thoses legendary albums and he was indeed a great drummer in albums and in Live.
I could be disappointed with his low key moments after that.
That said , im happy he s got his fire and dedication back since the 3 last years.
But people have to realize Lars had a lot of physical issues especially after the Black album load reload era thing.
But the black album tour, he was playing very well, but see how he hits and stuff, play like that , for 3 hours , each night for touring 3 years straight.
Ligament problems, Drugs problems, shoulders tore up.
So now , i understand, i had a Dystonia 3 years ago.
Its a tough shit to deal with, even mentally.
I don't excuse him, but im very happy he refound some of his level nowadays, despite the struggles

I LOVE the fact that Lars doesn’t have any tattoos.
Nowadays, you’re more unusual if you don’t.
I agree - I love not having any, even though I love tattos. My husband is covered in them.
I feel like I'm a rebel by not having any and I love it.
@Tammy Ruggles wabi-sabi
Some body I love the fact that tattooed people claim they don’t judge non tattooed people but when you tell them you have no tattoos they get all worked up... what’s wrong with normal skin
Hey, get tattoos. Skulls. Roses. Mechanical parts. Getting what everyone else gets is the greatest way to show you individualism and non conformity man. This dude walking around with bare skin whilst being in a band? Who the hell does he think he is? Eh?
By the way, I have started chewing match sticks to be more like myself. And him. ....
Excellent interview. Lars being a human. interviewer asking decent questions.
Yea...imagine that! Reminds me of people trying to interview GWAR after shows back in the day...

I like the fact that Lars acknowledged it's important to maintain mental and physical health! A major factor why Metallica stays solid and do the best live performances up to this date! They create impressive legacy as a band, team, artists. Hands down.
Considering where he comes from thats not surprising
Great interview. This guy comes up as very humble. Long Live Metallica!
because every twelve year old girl has a tattoo these days? More of a rebel to not have them

@Alexander R Williams See? Ozzy is a genius!
@Alexander R Williams Hey I'm an internet troll I am actually fine with what ever people want to do. I have many friends and acquaintances all tatted back
Basing your life decisions on what’s popular or not is for retards
Getting a tattoo is conforming, not rebelling.
thanks for providing an interesting interview. I appreciated the questions, and the ability to draw thoughtful ideas from Ulrich.
Finally a decent statement without the postee making a statement identifying themselves to metallica or Lars. I guess you just come to expect it with this particular fanbase
You don't need a tattoos, you're talent is still there
its more original to Not have tattoos now days.
true...tattoos are about conforming not rebelling these days

I love Lars' interviews. I have been following them since 1986 and he has always been pretty informative and open about the band and inside or "behind the curtain" info. AND, he is so freaking funny! Great since of humor. "Why don't you eat coal?" Cracks me up!! ;-)
Yep, I get his logic.. its like... duh (5 years later)
Man. I felt bad for him when he said, "I have a mosquito bite." And nobody laughed.
yeah he's trying hard to make a joke, but he failed.
Dude, you stupid of course nobody laugh, they sit in a room without audience, it's not like a stand up comedy show, it's just an interview duh

It's rare to not have a tattoo these days. I don't want anything permanent stained on my skin.
Good. Keep it that way. The media has brainwashed people into marking Themselves. Tattooing, Branding has always meant slavery.

I don't have one.
Ive been in plenty of bands and at 37 I still have no tats. Usually im the only one in the band with no tats. i just dont want someone marking me up with permanent ink.
If you say so. I have no problem with tats, plenty of my friends have them, they are just not for me. Also, Im not in a band currently numb nuts, and my mom has been dead for 15 years. Good job showing your whole ass in a single post.
I don't have tattoos because I like to be different.
the irony.. people used to do the opposite
Same reason I sold my cycle..
That's one of the big ones for me too. It's just not interesting anymore. It doesn't make you a "rebel" or "cool" or whatever. It's just a tattoo. I like them. Seen many cool ones. And if it's meaningful for the person that has them, then great. For me though...I don't put bumper stickers on a Ferrari.
Straw Man interesting how things change.. now this days you have to not have tattoos to be different, while before you wanted to have a tattoo to be different..

Well you seem like a person who has learn to make smart decisions. You know what you are not good at... but I think your gut knows you’ll regret it, which might be the case for you. I’m older now, and what I thought was soooooooohhhh cool on a 21 year old has had two effects on me. 1. I acted too young for too long and passed on some grown up decisions simply because I was “too hard”, then once I got older the other effect, 2. I was now too old to grow up and get those better grown up jobs now that I wanted to give up the “hard” image in my head. Not blaming my tattoo, but for me it was a huge mistake for me. I still like the tattoo, just not what I let it do to my outlook on life. Just my experience.

Metallica has always been my favorite band . I enjoy following news about them. I think it's great how they tour now in spurts. Health & family is important.
I am 48 and have several tattoos. Lars' remark about just eat coal is spot on for those who don't have them. There's a Dr. Seuss cartoon that talks about just be yourself and not follow trends. I get that, but I didn't get tattoos for anybody else but me. I get wierd looks from people sometimes. That's okay. I put myself in that situation. 20 years ago I would have been upset about it but now I don't care what people think. My wife doesn't have tattoos but will help me sometimes on designs for the next one. Not liking tattoos is cool, but having them is cool too. Just don't judge a book by the cover. Peace out folks. ☺
Very Well Written,Mister Flake-I appreciate the way you conducted your opinion, eloquently.

I first met Lars in San Francisco when they came up to play often before moving up to the Bay Area from SoCal and despite all the hate and the love for the guy, he remains one of the hardest working players in the business.
Great interview!
why all the haters the guy is a rock legend regardless if he likes tattoos or not... seems to me he lives a simple life go for you Lars...
steveninthe not to mention that he probably grew up in a wealthy family with a pro tennis player dad. Lol.
Exactly you are right i loved Metallica and when i was in my 15-25's i really want to be lars he was my hero loved his music and drums very basic but in perfect time, i agree you don't need to have 1000 piercings or tatto's to be a real Rockstar he kicked ass back and still kicking please don't disrespect Lars, as a matter of fact we now have shitty music thanks to napster at the end he was right. We people dissposed Rockstars like nothing, time moves on for everyone of course Lars knows he can't play like a teenager anymore he i'm sure feels bad about it. So i wish Dimebag was here still playing with Fucking Pantera and Phil with his now shitty voice and all the band mates fat and old but i will be more then happy to pay for a concert and yo hear them again Even if the are slow and old, by the way i will see them un Sandy Fucking ego and i will enjoy the moment i am 37 now.
He's obviously an important asset to the band, for several reasons and he's a legend. I like his interviews.
iBallisticPancankes - You must be young... in the 90s, Metallica was just the shit!
For me, as I'd say a lot of other people, came when Lars starting throwing MAJOR temper tantrums that people were stealing his music from the internet. Lars was the biggest, most childish spearhead of this whining.
Even though, I've bought their music on:
1. LP (aka vinyl, aka record)
2. Cassette
3. CD
4. And now MP3 again?
How many times should he get paid for the same songs? Is $80M net worth not good enough for him? He really needs another $20 buck from me??
*cough, cough* metal *cough, cough*
7:20 For the bald head reveal..

The shit must suck, Losing all that killer hair. He had the best hair in the early days of metallica

*Koolagin* - Old man? I'm 55 and have a full head of hair. I know guys in their 60's with hair you wouldn't believe! I'm pretty sure it's all hereditary.
Maybe you didn't know this but for people that were listening to them already in 90-91 he was already balding since back in the day, we could already see his bald spot on the forehead

I've always enjoyed watching interviews of Lars this dude is always crack me up is quite the character in no matter how you feel about Metallica he's a pretty epic drummer.
So many triggered people on both side of the argument. Tattoos arent even about conformity or non conformity anymore. Typically someone who gets a tattoo now a days doesn't say "im gonna get this tat so i can be unique and different!" Its not even an thought. Some people like the way it looks and others dont. Simple as that
Mr. sting ray Thank you!! Yes! When I get mine I know exactly what I want and why I want it. I've never just went ans got one just to do it. I've thought about mine for awhile. I have 13 and plan on more.
Correct. That line is just one of many cliche anti tattoo lines like "what about when you're old?" as if everyone without tattoos looks amazing when old and wrinkly

Mad props to Lars(and Metallica) for changing up their set list while they're on tour to keep touring fans happy! I didn't know that. I've seen them twice (in Denver) and they kicked ass each time!
I've always liked Lars Ulrich so much, from interviews and seeing them play. Especially when I briefly met Metallica in February 1989 while Metallica and Queensryche were touring together🎸in Jacksonville Florida. Was one happy 18 year old girl. Ahhh,memories...!!!
You are a lady with great memories ahah

Because he's smart.
Textra1 agree
Textra1 my brother said exactly the same words
Tats are gay
Textra1 fuck tattoos i dont have any too, i have muscles instead
You're dumb if you have tattoos? Haha!!
Great interview with Lars Ulrich, thanks.
Some people think similarly to me in that they love the idea of tattoos BUT get bored with things quickly. I don't like to have the same windows wallpaper for more than a few days. Getting a tattoo no matter how cool would eventually bore me and I would want a change just not possible with tattoos. If they could be reliably and thoroughly removed without issue sure but with the current tech? Nah id be afraid of getting bored with them and then resentful.
My dad was born in 1934 and him growing up in the 40s and 50s says that anybody that had a tattoo back in that time was considered a criminal or someone of low morals
I mean, my grandpa served in the army sometime in the 40's or 50's, and has ONE on his right arm, but has NEVER had the ink done-up (maintained it), and it was a thing he got because he was in the service. As I said in my comment (that wasn't a reply to anyone else, just a comment on the video), I can understand veterans/marines and sailors that get tattoos. Getting them just because "it's art" or as a fashion anymore, is just stupid as hell.
In my country that was during 70-90 😁
I think soldiers had them as their profession was being a badass but at the same time especially then they were very respected people. Back then no one really saw soldiers as low lives since they selflessly served their country. That is the way it should be with our soldiers now.
social norms change over the years
So not much has changed?

Robert Hamrick being super wise and well spoken doesn't make up for the fact that he's a sub-par drummer.

These days NOT having a tattoo is a sign of originality. Tattoos have become a symbol of conformity.
TheQueenSpider dangerous thing...is that people are in control of traditions...and those in control of them...normally don't follow them...but it is a way to kind of play Simon says with the people without the people realising it...that is a very dangerous thing since we're u aware if that fact...
TheQueenSpider to me tattoos are for the people that need to try too hard.. theyre trying to make up for something
J Guy too me tattoos are for the people that arent getting the attention their looking for so they gotta start drawing on themselves.. kind of lame if u ask me
TheQueenSpider I never looked at it like that I always wanted to have a tattoo but never had the money to food is more important than a tattoo in my opinion but I have always felt uncomfortable that I didn't have tattoos because every one I know has them I've always been proud of being different never dressing a trend I was using different colours in my hair way before it was a trend the problem with tattoos today a few people get them and don't think about the meaning of the tattoo people who have tattoos aren't trying to prove something to most people a tattoo has real meaning getting though hard times a memory of a loved one my first tattoo would be of my dog who saved my life when my ex husband tried to kill me he also helped me through depression once he's gone I want something I can look down at when ever and where ever I want especially when I am having a hard time
I don't have any ink on me but there is a differance between tattoos and tattoos, it's like comparing a 3 year olds painting in kindergarden vs Mona Lisa, two very different things but at the end of the day both are paint on a piece of paper.
Well it has become just a fashionable thing to have. As far as I can tell it has nothing to do with being "alternative" anymore... Just like smoking weed. At least in Canada...
Branimir Sremec how is smoking weed "fashionable"
ParkerPlaysDrums people still think it makes you "cool"
I remember back in the 80’s here in the Midwest, Metallica didn’t hit its stride until Masters of Puppets and I was just blown away by them and then my favorite album still to this day And Justice for All came out and I was hooked like a drug..I’ve seen almost every show they have done here and have always been impressed.. More importantly: he's right. You're putting stuff in your body that doesn't belong there which is asking for trouble. Besides that tattoos just don't age well: you have a Rembrandt put on when you're young and thirty years later you have a Picasso...

Lars doesn't have tattoos because he's a real man; he has skill and talent to attract attention, he doesn't need to alter his appearance to get very shallow, short term attention.

I'm not a HUGE Metallica fan. I listened the hell out of their older stuff and I'm definitely a fan. But, I've gotta be honest.... most of the discussions I've had about Metallica, I pretty much covered the "ripping on Lars" base. Especially after seeing Some Kind of Monster, in which he really came off to me as a total douche. But I found him to be very likable, very humble, and very interesting in this interview, which is nice to see. I also happen to share his enthusiasm for not getting tattoos. I have none as well. I've always been one to see through the facades we all have, whether it be tattoos, hair styles, clothes, piercings, make up, whatever... and not let any of it sway me when it comes to seeing the actual person underneath all of that. All that stuff doesn't really matter when it really comes down to it. If you like tattoos, get 'em. If you don't... don't. For me personally, it's not that I don't like tattoos- it's that I would almost certainly get sick of seeing whatever it was that was drawn on my body, no matter how well it was done or how much I loved it at the time. 10 years... 20 years later... I know I would wish I had never done that. So I never did.
The king of metal drums !! no one can play like this guy putting a lot of emotion ,most drummers are robots full of technique and a bag of tricks but no heart and feelings at all.
Yea, no. Lombardo is better no disrespect to Lars
No, Lars. The Who with Keith Moon was the most energetic and physical band ever and always will be. There's no way that they could perform the same way as they got older.
Metallica for MOP was hands down the most intense concert I got to see, though.
I don’t have them either. 😁 I visited a few WH open 24/7.
Gg! U GUYS Are keeping the music a live good luck
I remember Ozzy telling his son, if you want to be different, dont get any tattoos! Man was he right on the mark. Us rockers (musicians) from the 80's know, we were different with tattoos. We were the rockers. All the others just didn't get tattoos. Now I just laugh when I see this craze of tattoos on everyone.
steve4321able At least we millennials don't try to look like girls unlike you old guys we're proud to actually be a male to look dress and act like men we don't put on makeup or eyeliner oh and god forbid we ever wear spandex pants!! (Violently gags!!!)
steve4321able I have tattoos because I was 8n the army and I rarely see anyone outside the military with tattoos
steve4321able You must be hysterical, constantly.
You laugh, and nobody cares. Good for you.
steve4321able I remember that conversation Ozzy had with his son.
I give props to Metallica for going this long as one of the foundations of metal. Still, considering Maiden are all around retirement age and still CRUSHING at the same speed, and in the same key, unbelievably, they are the benchmark of long-lasting dedication. I saw them a week ago, and aside from a few wrinkles and Bruce's grey hair, time hasn't slowed them down at all. Nicko is 67, for God's sake.
I’m not even a Maiden fan, but I saw them at MSG a few years back and was simply blown away. Those guys rocked harder than any band I have ever seen that operates anywhere near that scale.
I don't have any tattoos yet, but I want some. For once, because I love art and I try to be very artistic, and two, well, I'd want to show off the cool art that stems from either things I like or just incredibly cool images.
1:26 was Lars telling someone to steal second base?
Cool answer about tattoos.
I love Lars he is such a sweetheart
Cool intervew but I miss the old ones like on Headbangers Ball!
I agree with him on the tattoo question.
Lars did a great job inducting my favorite band Deep Purple into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame.
LightningBrigade, that was a big joke as well. Should have been done in 1993 when MK 2 reformed again and Lordy was still there. Gillan now manipulated Morse/Airey line up into playing at the event while they never were eglible for the award.
+Jon Blackers Well said Jon. I totally agree with you. I was very proud of Blackmore not showing up.
I play drums for Agent Orange and I have no tattoos. For the exact reasons Lars doesn't have any!

Agent Orange.....?! Living in Darkness.....Immense! Yes, tattoos used to be something that belonged to the sub-culture, people living on the edge, but now everyone and his granny is tattooed from top to bottom and it has become mainstream and frankly, a bit cheap and chavvy. I feel sorry for the real sub-culture that have earned their stripes...so to speak....I used to know by a persons tattoos that they had a good connection to music...but....not anymore....Yep, I sound a bit elitist on that point. It just annoys me. 😬🤐
I cut myself...
