  • Today, I thought I'd take a look at what 4-koma manga is, the structure and a particular 4-koma series I'd like to see released in English someday.

It's bathroom reading material like newspaper comics

It would definitely work well since they're quick to read but, considering I collect manga, I'd be concerned about the hygiene! No one would ever want to pick one of my books up if I did that!

Cool, never heard of this before. It's very similar to the three act structure concept in the west, the channel Strip Panel Naked did a video on it, " Three Act Structure in Comic Strips". Your FMA manga example makes me wonder if the funny non-canon joke clips at the end of some anime episodes, like Naruto's keywords, were inspired by 4-koma.

Yeah, I remember people comparing it to three panel comic strips in the West. Maybe. I remember those joke clips but I can't remember if any of them are based on the 4-koma omake. Interesting point though.

Funny you mention newspaper 4-Koma because newspaper comic strips also follow a four panel structure such as Dilbert, Peanuts, and Calvin & Hobbes. So I’d say anyone that loves koma would check out some collected newspaper comic strips and vice versa.

When I was doing research, it seemed that older Peanuts comics were 4 panel before switching to 3 panel later on. Is that true and does it also apply to other comics like Dilbert and Calvin & Hobbes?

do you know of any 4-koma manga that are not comedy?

That's a very good question! I wasn't able to think of any so I tried looking it up. There may be a few but, if there are, I don't know any specifically. The format is structured for comedy and it's quite likely that mangaka would go for the standard format if they aren't making a comedic series. Still, if you find any, please let me know as I'd be extremely intrigued!
