  • I thought it might be interesting to take a look at a term used in the manga and anime community, "The Big Three", and discuss how true the term is and the problems associated with it.

It depends on the context that it's used.
I don't like it if people use the term "The Big Three" to try to undermine other series or even to try to give praise to these 3 series. The term shouldn't be a seal of quality or anything like that.
However, I'm totally fine if people use it to refer to a specific time in the manga/anime industry, because I think it's undeniable that One Piece, Naruto and Bleach were the face of Shonen jump in the 2000's, regardless of overall sales or viewership... I think the popularity and longevity during the 2000s plus the fact that they are from the same genre (battle shonen) is what made them stand out a bit more than other anime/manga.
Also, all the popular sites from back in the day that most people needed to use to watch anime or read manga always used images of those series in their front page (like the iconic OneManga), this may had help with the origin of the term "The Big Three".

I get your point. I guess, if people want to use the term, they should clarify what they mean by it so it's not open for misinterpretation. By that point though, I'd think it'd be better to simply refer to them as some of the more popular Shonen manga in the West.
Yeah, I suspected it had something to do with that.

Aw man! They're on a whole 'nother level! We all need to watch out for them when it comes to replacing the so-called Big Three!
