The black and white aesthetic has been used in Western comics as well, like The Walking Dead and Judge Dredd, though obviously it's the reverse of the situation in Japan.

Yeah, I think Sin City, Persepolis and Maus have black and white artwork as well. Yeah, I think it's fair to say that it's a reverse situation in Japan.

Wow thank you for this I have always wanted to know why manga is released in black and white. I understand why now and it is cool that full color is out there for fans.

Black & white is the way to go, IMHO. Outside of the reasons you mentioned (time & cost), sometimes I feel like colouring can look kinda tacky compared to raw line art. Not always but sometimes.

I would associate that more with poor colouring than whether black and white is truly better but I also understand what you mean.

Hi Immortallium, I've just discovered your channel and been watching like crazy. I already purchased a Manga based on your reviews and is Ayako, loved it. I was thinking, can you tell me your thoughts about Monster from Naoki Urasawa, I already read Pluto and loved it and purchase Monster, in Brazil (where I am from), is a big investment, so I would like to know your opinion. Thanks for all your content.

Awesome to hear! I've actually yet to read Monster. Like you, I've read Pluto but I actually haven't read any other Naoki Urasawa series yet. Sorry I can't help you on that.

To some extent I prefer the monochrome stuff. Way to many artists over saturates the colors.

I've seen a lot of beautiful colour artwork but I've noticed that a lot of Western superhero comics have a smudgy look to the artwork these days that I'm not a fan of.
