    The image from a RED is insanely flexible, and I love their decisions regarding ISO-invariance, but they are a huge PAIN IN THE ASS on set. Buggy (a decade later), unergonomic, and endlessly fiddly. I'm glad I had an amazing AC last time I used one, because they can really slow you down.

    • @David-ud9ju
      @David-ud9ju Před 4 lety +6

      @@mason7031 No, the Red has better dynamic range - according to the companies themselves and independent tests. The Arri has pixels that are like twice the size though so it captures way more light, which is why it's far better in low light. I'm not sure why it seems to handle the light and shade better in the beach hut shot but it could be a similar thing. Arri do insist on putting a green hue on the footage though for some reason. I'm assuming that's because the human eye is most sensitive to green light so they capture extra of it - it can then be colour corrected out in post to produce a superior image than a camera without the extra green.

But, I kept seeing that almost all digitally shot motion pictures were shot with the Arri Alexa despite the RED seeming to have better resolution and a more flexible codec and at a much lower cost for the body. With this video, now I understand why. Thank you for showing me the differences. • @SHDEdits
      @SHDEdits Před 5 lety +8

      @@dankazama09 Yeah but the issue with Red for a lot of large DP's is it's highlights and color, They just don't roll off the same as an Alexa, which is why older DP's are more attracted to it, it resembles a more filmic texture. You certainly can bring extra dynamic range out of the Red with it's raw, however that's only when using raw, I've seen comparisons between the Red Hellium and Alexa XT on a base log exposure, and alexa handles color much better then Red at different stops. Alexa seems to keep very consistent color information, which for large budget features obligated to maintain a certain tone, it makes sense why it'd be the more desirable camera brand.
      Of course this all depends on what you're shooting too. If you're shooting an Apple Commercial or a high budget CGI feature, then Red is the way to go for it's flexibility in resolution and raw. However for something with a little more edge, that doesn't look as perfect and more stylistically different, Alexa is a great choice for it's imperfections. There certainly is such a reason to avoid something too sharp and too perfect when picking a camera for a film. I'd say alexa is great for dramatic narratives, science fiction features and anything that requires a bit more edge.

I mean the fs7 in combination with a shogun and ProResRaw is just fine but this Alexa Mini looks so good, its like another world of cinematography. The Alexa blows the RED out of the water. Much better dynamic range and more detail, and this even-ness in the scene (easily seen in the close up face shots at night) is what DPs are after. It's closer to the film response and it doesn't draw attention to itself so much. The RED's color science is reddish too, while Alexa's is more yellow, again, like film. We all get that contrasty red look that RED has with cheaper cameras, and I don't like it at all. I want the eveness of film that Alexa provides. Heck, I want the eveness of 70mm film, that not even Alexa 65 can't provide. Go see some of these 1960s 70mm film movies, and you will see that while the scene is contrasty between elements, it's not contrasty within each element. For example, you would normally get a very even face, no contrast (Liz Taylor's Cleopatra shots come to mind). I love that look. Instead, what we get with our GH5, our BMPCC, our dSLRs, and even the RED, is the iPhone look (I'm exaggerating, but it's just a higher quality version of that digital log curve).

    • @ajankytoucan
      @ajankytoucan Před 5 lety +3

      You obviously know more about cameras and Film than me, but I always thought that old movies don't have harsh shadows is because they were lit a lot more than todays movies. I did not see this soft look in more modern movies shot on 65mm film, I thought the Hateful 8 (I think it was shot on 65mm) hat fairly contrasted lighting an d looked a little more harsh(which I personally like more than the smooth look of old color movies) because it was lit differently. But i could also be talking nonsense, I only have a very basic understanding of cameras, film and cinematography.

    We use the RED Helium at my school and we’ve been taught to avoid using the button to shut down and just press the battery life on the screen and shut down from there, quick lil short cut that helps. It’s like a computer so once you shut down you have to give it a bit until the fans stop running if you wanna turn it back on. Although with the RED, we’ve had it crash before due to improper shut down via holding the power button for too long on a few shoots when other people have used it.
