Just picked up an Alexa Classic camera! At this price point the camera is an absolute no brainer. Write it off on your taxes as a business expense, make money with the camera, and sell it for probably the same as what you paid for it now. I can't image these cameras can get much cheaper.
So why are these cameras so expensive? bc of the color science? Can you explain why an arri is worth 10x as much as like a sony fx6 or red komodo?
@@wcsdiaries The new ones are 10X the price, not the classic. It comes down to build quality, color science, tonality, and how the sensor handles difficult lighting situations. 60K is nothing for a major Film/TV show so it makes sense to use a system that is proven to be reliable, and has a simple workflow. Time is money.

@@wcsdiaries it’s more about how it responds to the grade. It holds up extremely well. Also, I feel like the camera has a lot of qualities that are difficult to quantify. It just has a pleasing look.

The tax reduction will only be a small part of $6500, and that may even be distributed in multiple years depending on the country taxation laws and the nature of the tool. Like any investment, it may make sense in some cases.The benefit from its use must be higher than its cost minus the tax, and there are many other parameters to consider when you are spending money.

Amazing how much of a different the camera makes if the HD resolution looks sharp etc or not. Maybe people wouldn't follow the 4k hype if they would focus more on what makes a good/sharp image
Is is of course the 4:4:4 sampling which makes the sharp image. It can't be compared with the conventional 4:2:0, where 80% of the color pixels are thrown away.
This is impressive how much quality the 10 years old camera can deliver! And no changes of exposure when moving from outside to the inside is just impressive!
Funny how having a "big camera" just freaks out the local security etc.

Bigger cameras are usually for television. Turns out people really don't like being randomly filmed. Also due to the still increased risk of terrorist attacks, security and police are trained to look for sketchy situations so you will just have to get used to asking permission.
The "fucking blue collar poor people" aren't the issue. It's the laziness of people not asking permission which is killing it for the rest of us.
I rarely got a no and barely had any fees either.

In my hall there's a fully equipped police jacket, peli-light, video recorder, digital radio... heavily stocked utility belt - except it doesn't say 'police' on it, it says something else... you can see them eyeing it and their manner changes, 'cus they don't quite know who you are - but the cap rested on top of it looks like you're from the 'business end' of the organisation ; )

Fun fact: ARRI doesn't make their own sensors. ON Semiconductor makes the ALEV III sensor, they were also the ones commissioned to design it and won an award for it.
Fun fact #2: The Alexa LF and Mini LF don't have a new sensor. They just butted two old ALEV III designs together and rotated it. They only ever had one sensor, the same as in your "old" Classic, and it's still the one used in their latest cameras. The Alexa 65 is just three ALEV III designs butted together on the same die.

@@HYTTFilms Forza Silicon. I'm not sure who does the actual fab though, but I'm pretty certain Forza did the contracted design.
Well of course Arri don't have a semiconductor factory, but they didn't just order "some sensor" from ON Semiconductor. They have specialists who designed that sensor in collaboration with the semiconductor people, and they did a good job so far because every cameraman with a high enough budget will usually go for Arri.

@@Spirit532 I didn't mean Arri have *sensor* specialists. Arri have experts who know what they want as a result in color reproduction, and they made it happen. If it were so easy to just hire some semiconductor company to make a good sensor for you, then Sony, Blackmagic, Canon, Panasonic and others would have sensors that are just as good as Arri's. But obvisously they don't.

Lol i am guessing you can only check that with some digital color table? Kinda like rgb being 16 million colors and to be honest i have no idea if can tell some shades apart
And display them on a monitor which does not, so you're definitely not seeing them. It also depending on how you export and encode/compress the video, but it's always good to have more colors or a bigger range than not.
Because it is being record and then you have a wider range to edit, its call Dynamic Range.
That's not really true. The camera's sensor may be sensitive to _wavelengths_ (like infrared, which is not a color) that the human eye cannot see, but the human eye does not quantize colors into discrete and limited values. So while the number of colors that the camera can record is a limited function, the human eye has no such limitation-it can see infinite numbers of different shades. (How our brains process this information is another matter, but that was not part of the claim.) There's no quantity greater than infinity.
Although it might seem like a "feature" to have a camera sensor that is sensitive to wavelengths that the human eye is not sensitive to, it's actually a bug. Like our eyes, the camera only records three primary colors: red, green and blue. A sensor that can for example resolve longer wavelength reds than the human eye can only record the invisible (to humans) light as "red", so a scene that contains more of the longer wavelength red will only be recorded as "more red" not "deeper red." The ideal opto-electrical transfer function (OETF) for any camera used for human viewing is precisely the same as the human eye, no more no less.

Nice camera. Still holds up in 2019. I prefer good HD over OK 4K anytime. Dynamic range and color are the most important. Resolution is the last thing you should be thinking about. I hope you are gonna make some awesome stuff with it. You ar e going to get super strong after some time wit this camera! My DSLM camera rigged out is even quite heavy...

That is not public property. That is a parking lot owned by the operator of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, a tourist attraction in Palm Springs, CA. The owner of the property has the legal right to tell them what types of activities and cameras are permitted there. Likely they charge fees to permit commercial cinematography.

Old cameras in good condition are the undiscovered gold of the indy film makers quest. We are mostly aware of the value of vintage glass but older film cameras still rock. Maybe Gene you will try out some film cameras 16mm & 35mm, I think you will love it.
Exiting to be along for this adventure, I totally feel you. :) I find it confusing though to be surprised about the great image of such an "old" camera. We've been celebrating digital photos and film even from the early 2000s and they haven't gotten any worse. Resolution expectations may have increased, but the visual quality remains as good as ever, and we're still excited about the movies from that time. I'm actually pretty excited to get some of the cameras from around that time I dreamt of back then, just for the experience of shooting with them, they should still look and feel badass, like a luxury car from decades ago still feels like a luxury car.
Went the same route, bought a used Alexa Plus and its a totally different planet in comparison to my FS7, which I still love. Hard to describe.

Meeting some dude in “Hollywood” he sells you an Alexa on a street corner. That moment when you get home and find your Alexa is actually a shoe box painted grey with “Arri” down the side and it’s actually full of potato peelings (to give it authentic weight of course). I was half expecting that dude with the curly hair to leg it down the road after he said “hope you have fun with it” 😂

My dream has been to own an Arri Alexa also. After seeing your video I decided to get one also. I found one at Alan Gordon. I got an Alexa Classic EV for under $6000. But not by much. It isn't the Plus like the one you got. When I was in college I wanted an Arri 16BL - never got one. Now I will be getting an Arri Alexa. Exciting.
What's ironic is that in 1977 I was on a trip to Germany and got a private tour of the Arri Factory in Munich by Dr. August Arnold the owner. It was the most fantastic experience ever. What I life I've had. After seeing your video on the PL to EF conversion, I also got an EF conversion kit for the Alexa so I can use my Canon lenses. Because of your videos I decided to get an Arri Alexa. So I have to say Thanks for the motivation.

You shaving was the funniest thing I've seen in ages!
You need to do a video of your first experience with a straight razor, also known as a "cutthroat" razor, like the Dovo Inox or the Feather SS.
I usually shave with a double blade safety razor, I'm quite partial to the Merkur 34c handle myself and feather blades, but like to use my straight razors when feeling exceptionally manly. :D
Oh, and that camera is awesome too :P
