You were pretty right that you chose the best tool (camera) for the job. There isn't a one size fits all camera system to choose. I've owned REDs for years (currently have a Weapon Helium), but I also shoot with Alexa's on a regular basis.
I do feel that with the RED DSMC2 cameras, they have made their camera system much better overall than the DSMC1 you shot on:
-simultaneously record 4k prores/DNxHR with r3ds for better choices/faster workflows for editing. The image also is supersampled and debayered from the full sensor readout (depending on the crop you chose) for the prores/DNxHR files
-r3ds are more efficient, from my testing 7:1 on DSMC1 is equivalent to the quality of around 9:1 on DSMC2, even the Dragon sensor on DSMC2 has better s/n and a bit better highlight details due to the more powerful ASIC boards
-RED Armor (sensor swap) from an owner/operator perspective is something exclusive to RED (although it looks like Canon's FF will do something similar) but I no longer have to buy a totally new camera/sensor system, I choose the sensor that is best for the project (Monstro VV, s35 Helium, Low Light Gemini, etc.)
Shooting on the Alexa in Log C is truly amazing, their color science is more aesthetically pleasing straight out of the camera then what RED does (which is more of a scientifically accurate look with IPP2). And it's that pleasing look with great DR which is why Hollywood chooses Arri over RED for more projects overall. With the efficiency of r3ds if I shot 4k prores HQ upscaled in camera on an Alexa-that data rate is about equal to 8k 11:1 on a RED-so the data rates are a myth when working with RED.
With what I've seen with the Gemini Sensor-in terms of DR it sure appears that RED has caught up to Arri's DR, it's also a little taller than Helium/Dragon so anamorphic is a bit better, and with the larger sensor cropping down for higher frame rates gives you less of a crop.

You nailed it right on the head when you said that many times people will try to tell you what is the most popular camera based on their opinion. You’re a pro and you gave some awesome pros and cons to each depending on the situation. There really is no one size fits all. Thanks a lot for your unbiased insight and keep up the great work! The ONE biggest thing I would say to rephrase or rethink, even, is the mindset of cropping the shot in post being considered a different "angle". If the camera is stationary, position and height unchanged, cropping in is not considered a different angle - it's just a tighter framing. You can't expect to crop to get a 3/4 framing of the talent if your shot is of two people talking to each other resulting your shot to have 2 profile shots of the talents... You can't just crop to see the other eye.
Otherwise, great video! Very informative and knowledgeable!

The red is loud, quickly very hot - okay could be good for cold winter productions, but if its cold the Black Shading, you have to do, takes too much time. The Timecode is not that good for long shoots and if the camera gets a Hard Shutdown, it is not safe, you get a functioning recordet file.... But with not so much Budget its a good alernative to ARRI. :)

    Hi,
As you told, the Redcine X plugin is good. I've tried it, but once you convert Red Raw files using Redcine X, it becomes compressed. Any codec when converted undergoes compression. My question is shooting RAW in Red and then converting it with Redcine X, will it give all the shadow details ? Will the dynamic range be retained ?

I can only afford a bmpcc 4k and preordered one just because it will allow me to directly to record prores footage to a ssd harddrive. I am just learning about cinematography, so I don't really need a Red or Arri right now. After I learn more about cinematography, I'll be in a better position to choose which camera or cameras I need to own. Right now I just want to own a cheap cinema-style camera so I can play around with it, and learn how to use it. I can't really justify renting a camera just to play around with it; I'd rather own a lower cost cinema camera so I can learn on it and improve my camera skills.

it's up to you. i like my micro cinema camera, but it doesn't do low light at all. depends on your needs dude. also black magic cameras need a lot of batteries and other additional gear, so be prepared to pay hundreds for cages and monitors and stuff

    • @BlackWinterProduction
      @BlackWinterProduction Před 6 lety

It depends on too many factors. I own both types of cameras and no compressed 4K from Sony and the likes can compare to the beautiful 2K RAW from BlackMagic, I only use them for 120 fps slow-mo shots. Slow-mo is almost imperative for music videos, which was my reason for buying the 60 fps BM Micro. So, I strongly prefer BlackMagic. These cameras are NOT for low light, but who needs badly lit music videos anyway? They are all about creative lighting, which is possible even on a tight budget. What I am trying to say is that music videos cinematography requires more considerations than just a camera - lights, rigging, power, post production and so on.

Red's are still quirky so unless you have several backups I'd consider only Arri. Red Cameras dont have a Full-Frame Sensor (excluding the new sensor)

If I wanted to get a cinema quality camera for run and gun reporting how would I figure what camera to get. Continous af is not as important as push auto because I am going to use the camera to video tape press conferences--I just like the hdr and quality that cinema cameras give me; that and they are not limited to 20 or 30 minutes of recording at a time. It is as annoying af to keep on having to record again during a press conference; I want a camera with the iq of a DSLR that allows interchangable lenses and has a lot of stops of dynamic range. Since I can't really afford to rent cameras to test, how can I evaluation cinema-type cameras priced at the 2k or lower. Right now I am eying a bmpcc 4k because it works all /w my glass and will allow me to save prores files directly to an external ssd which will save me a lot of time because I won't have to transcode my footage to prores, which takes a lot of time and horsepower, to give footage of press conferences to my editor.
bmpcc 4k seems to have everything I need for recording press type stuff with a high iq while also letting me play around with raw files to learn how to color stuff, but I've heard that blackmagic tends to overpromise and underdeliver

what is the best way to select a camera when you can't afford to rent, news reporting doesn't pay well enough to rent a different camera for each lens, the only reason I want a cinema camera is because they have such nice hq and a hdr (lots of dynamic range) plus I just find the footage looks so pretty
I also want to play around with raw and learn how to color grade just because I like beautiful images

I want something with the quality my DSLR has w/o a recording time limit, and cinema cameras seem to be the only thing that offers this. I also want to eventually learn cinematography but I want a camera that can both be used for recording news events and for playing around with cinema-style shooting so I can learn how to be a cinematographer.
