Turning my Sony a7s into a CINEMA Camera!

  • I take my little Sony a7s and build it out into a full cinema camera similar to what a RED cinema camera has in features. Of course the dynamic range, image quality and RAW capabilities don't even compare on the a7s vs RED, but there are a lot of power, ergonomic and focus features you can add to a DSLR or mirrorless camera to make it more usable for films. Hopefully this full camera rig buildout gives you some ideas about how you can make your own camera rig even better. This doesn't only apply to the a7s, you can use you own camera and cage and add a lot of these features and tools to your setup.

    As a 15 year ENG vet and audio Sup, I’m curious as to how front heavy that rig is. In a lot of gigs, you are “shouldered up” for 10+ hours. You will have a time code box and an IFB (for sound reference) stacked next to your Anton Bauer/Vmount. The speed rails need to be longer, to offset the weight, if you are shoulder mounting for more than a few hours. Otherwise, your forearms will burn.
    And you never mention bongo ties. Cable management is everything on DSLR rigs. Keep it tight or you will snag.

And keep in mind people, this rig can be used with different cameras and looks so much professional arriving on set with this than with a mirrorless cam. Just imagine arriving on set with a a6500 vs this rig. The only thing missing from this rig would be a microphone.

      Thanks, I appreciate it! Yeah, I've been looking into the Tilta wooden handle with the record button, its $230 though, so I'm trying to decide if it's worth it. There are some things done right here, and others that are done for no reason. My biggest issue is if you're putting on a follow focus why on earth would you use a wireless one? I mean unless you ALWAYS have a first AC that can use it, it makes no sense. It's just another device sucking power from the v mount and another point of failure for the rig. Just get a good manual follow focus if you're going to be pulling your own focus. Also get something, anything for audio, the internal mic on the a7s is garbage, should only ever be used for scratch audio. also get a clip on matte box, gonna save you a lot of time and you wont need a donut. Also that nd throttle doesnt use the best glass so your color accuracy will be off. Just buy some drop in filters for your matte box, 4x4 drop in ND isnt that expensive.

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  Před 4 lety +9

      Julien Mamazza all good points! And there are actually reasons for them all.
      I’ve been using the ND Throttle primarily cause it acts like a great “internal ND” but it does add some vignetting and color shift. I do have 4x4 ND filters but prefer variable for convenience and speed-this has all been solved though-my latest video explains it better! czcams.com/video/f8xtEzeBEnE/video.html
      I used to use nice solid manual follow focus, but have since upgraded to the Nucleus Nano. It’s actually much smoother and doesn’t take any force to turn the wheel, which helps prevent camera shake when pulling focus. Also, on larger client shoots, we do often slide it right off and have someone pull focus.
      I’m almost Always recording professional audio separately and then syncing it in post, so the crappy internal mic actually works fine for scratch. I’m not gonna add my shotgun mic for slightly better audio when I’ll never actually use it.
      Anyways, the setup isn’t for everyone, but it works well for the work that I do!

    Hey Chadwin! I have a question about the nucleus nano, did you meneged to use the r/s button on the focus wheel to triger recording on camera?

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  Před 4 lety

      Right now, the functionality of R/S button from Tilta isn't setup up and working wirelessly, but they do sell trigger cables (you just have to get one that works with your camera)

      Another company has built a wireless bluetooth adapter for the pocket 4k/6k

    First, thanks for doing this video, When I did the research, I realized building a set up like this would be perfect for me.
    I already had an A7iii. Had to use the Small rig 2087 cage for that series. Also had to get a bolt on 1939 rosette because the 2087 version doesn't have one attached. I used it to attach an extension arm for the follow focus handle. I like having the control down by my right thumb. I used a different Follow focus set up as well as a monitor that reads SD cards instead of using SSD.
    I also added a shoulder pad and hang the V lock battery and mount as a counter weight just behind my shoulder on the rails - works awesome.
    Not complaining - the entire set up cost me $1,658.
    With a little research anyone can find a solid set up for their camera that includes everything in this video in one form or another.
    Well worth the investment.

      Douglas Proce it sounds like you’ve created an awesome custom setup for your A7iii! Do you have any shots of it on your channel? I always love to see how people are rigging their cams.
