The passing of a titan
Names consisted of just three letters has a special bond with Tamil Cinema, Be it MGR, Sivaji (சிவாஜி), TMS, PBS, Rajni (ரஜினி), Kamal (கமல்), the three letters have rendered magic that would take years to surpass the records set by them. The legacy of three letters continues with the present generation as well, but I refrain from mentioning them on purpose since the intention is to celebrate the eminence of a stalwart who ruled the roost throughout a major span of his lifetime.
The year was 1964, a youngster clad in simple attires alighted from Charminar express walked straight to the streets of Kodambakkam (the Mecca of South Indian Cinema of the time) looking for an opportunity to pursue his passion. The usual immigrants of Kodambakkam tend to stroll with loads of passion initially only to succumb to the realities of life later and evade the idea of pursuing the passion as a mere illusion. But some, although experienced all the tyranny that the place could render, went on to reach the pinnacle of success and SPB is indeed one amongst them. The man with brute strength of perseverance never held second thoughts for knocking at any door for opportunities, never refrained from making accomplices in his sojourn for reasons which will be explained in the second part of this series. The opportunity seeking sojourn had
continued for years now,
not a sign,
the man never lost his desire to taste success,
never found reasons to evade from honing his skills.
Although the debut in cinema had to wait for a few more years, his association with a local sabha (colloquial word for clubs), strengthened his network in the film music circle. If Madras used to be a land for Sabha(s), then Mylapore should be declared as its capital. Balu, as how dear ones address SPB became a household name in Mylapore as the popularity of the man soured in the region.

True to the above mentioned statement, an incident happened in SPB’s life. The year was 1968, MGR and Sivaji, the arch-rivals were at the pinnacle of their popularity. They both had the command to hand-pick the technicians in every film they starred. Be it the man who wielded the megaphone, the man who zooms through the lens, the leading lady, her voluptuous companions, the comedian, the supporting actors were all have to or forced to remain in the good books of these super stars. One fine evening, MGR while getting his make-up removed heard a soothing voice, gentle for the standards of TMS and husky in the standards of PBS, the voice was largely an intermediate one. MGR quickly sent his men to find the man out and ordered for his summon. Who will deny a call from a star like MGR in those days? SPB appeared before MGR and MGR with a stern voice as always, asked him “Unakku en padathila paada ishtama” (Do you like to sing a song in my film). SPB was awe-struck and readily agreed. MGR had a habit of paying more to the people who works for his films and the food at the unit was always sumptuous and top-class in contrary to the menus of other production companies. SPB had to go through sleepless nights as sheer euphoria conjured him. The man was at the epitome of ecstasy. Who wouldn’t be? It was his second chance because the movie that recorded his voice for the first time remain un-released even today The song that MGR offered for SPB as his launch pad was “aayiram nilavae vaa” (let thousands of moons adhere towards me) for the movie “adimai pen”. But incidentally this is technically his second song in terms of the release dates as the song “Iyarkai enum ilaya Kanni” (nature in the form of a virgin lass) from the movie “Shanthi Nilayam was his first. I had personally fought with many who claim the former as his first song in Tamil Cinema. Off course that was the song that was recorded but got released after Shanthi Nilayam. If you notice, the first released song had a word “Iyrakai” (meaning nature in Tamil) and the second song had the word “nilavu” (meaning moon in Tamil). With the first two songs, the man sealed his place and conquered the universe for showcasing his dazzling talent for decades to follow.
Let me share a few trivial information about SPB which many are unaware of. The debut movie of SPB i.e., Shanthi Nilayam was an unofficial remake or inspiration of the Hollywood timeless musical classic film “Sound of Music”. It was an era of Cold war between two superpowers of the world and the contest was “Who will send humans to moon first”; please note the reference of moon is again mentioned here. If you want to know the reason behind why I shared about cold war and the moon thing, you must watch the song “Boomiyil Irupathum Vanathil iruppathum” from Shanthi Nilayam. The second trivial information was that if you continue to listen one song of SPB every day before you sleep, you may have to remain alive for another century i.e., till 2143 to listen to all of his songs at this rate. Imagine the amount of songs he crooned in his life time.
The third but the sad trivial information about him that saddened me this afternoon was that years ago he had to quit his engineering degree due to the infection of typhoid, the disease caused by bacteria which paved way for disembarking the engineering dream and provided the opportunity for his debut in silver screen. Now it was Corona virus, another microbe that brought the curtains down for this legendary singer. Man seems to have a crucial relationship with micorbes. I feel extremely elated and delighted today as I continued playing his hit songs in my laptop since afternoon. Although, it is a sad day, I deem this event to celebrate the man’s stupendous ride through the musical journey. I would like to conclude by referring to a famous quote by Stephen King that goes something like this “I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone”.
