      In my opinion, shotguns are practically useless, both against drones and in urban combat. Unless you're using a duckbill choke and shooting birdshot, your buckshot grouping is going to be smaller than 2 inches within 15 feet, it offers no advantage to a rifle.

      I mean shotguns have been used in combat longer than rifles, muskets are technically shotguns as they have no rifling.
      Having said that, why they haven't added say a sawn off pump action or a Russian made MTS-225 revolver shotgun to an AK is beyond me.
      Least then you'd get multiple shots, plus you wanna be using birdshot not buckshot to take out a drone you A wanna definitely ensure you hit it and B it's only a plastic or metal prop you've gotta knock out to cause it to crash

    • @michaelbuckers
      @michaelbuckers Před 3 měsíci +53

      @@hordegaming4771 FPVs move at such speeds that you don't get multiple shots anyway. It takes them less than 2 seconds to go from the far edge of your effective range and directly into your face. Underbarrel shotguns like masterkey are very heavy and hang off the front end of the gun, this affects your gun's accuracy extremely adversely. If you wanted to shoot at people further than 200 meters away I would even recommend doing away with suppressors, since those also make your rifle extremely front-heavy and unwieldy. Underbarrel grenade launchers are reasonably lightweight so having one is not a big hindrance, and the utility of lobbing frag grenades great distances is WAY greater than the utility of killing people point blank which your assault rifle can already do and better.

  • @Reddsoldier
    @Reddsoldier Před 3 měsíci +438

    It's definitely something, but part of me does think this is more of a peace of mind system rather than one that'll have genuine impact. Most of the drone drops I've seen against infantry have been from so high up that they didn't even know they were being targeted until a 60mm mortar round was at their feet, and FPV drones are much smaller and faster than the drones seen in the demonstration.
    Maybe with practice they'll work, but that is some insanely hard to get experience given that if you mess up once you are pretty much done for. I still think the real solution is just equipping a soldier with an actual shotgun. The cheapest shotguns are not much more than double the cost of this device and can fire multiple shots in sequence.

    • @hordegaming4771
      @hordegaming4771 Před 3 měsíci +22

      To me a long barrel and tube 12 or even 10 gauge shotgun would be perfect, with a 20 or possibly 24" barrel and a choke firing birdshot.
      You could probably keep a 4" spread even out to 100m with that thing, you probably could. Mount a even bog standard (so funny saying this mind) scope to it too, with back up top mounted irons? And you'd have to be an insane drone pilot to be able to hit your target if spotted

    • @youtubeSuckssNow

      It will do very little. I couldn't find any references or pictures of buckshot rounds for the GP-25 outside of games. The propellant and primer for VOG-25 is in the base of the grenade which is muzzle loaded, not a breech-loaded case + round like other systems. So for a shotgun round to work the part containing the primer and propellant would also have to leave the barrel at the same time as the pellets. That's why this system is so clumsy because of the inherent caseless design of the GP-25.

      This is just another tool for the toolbox of the soldiers.
      It's not a end-all-be-all sorta kit, it's just gonna allow them to protect themselves better against FPV drones, as these fly directly towards their target, and they usually fly low to avoid detection.
      Shotguns are heavy and another piece of kit to keep functioning, not to mention the cost of mass-rollout of a new weapon.
      This device is a "gap" weapon, that they can quickly rollout while they develop a more permanent solution.

      The thing is, this system allows many more soldiers to take advantage of it. While a dedicated shotgun would indeed be better, it's additional gear to carry, fewer persons having access to it, and additional strain on logistics.
      While this does not seem optimal, at least it's just an adapter for a system that many more soldiers already use. It doesn't seem as cumbersome than a whole shotgun, and shouldn't strain logistics as much either.
      As for everything, it's a matter of compromise. And both shotguns+this adapter will probably be used in tandem anyway. The point is just to give as many soldiers the ability to take out drones without hindering on their tactical and operational capabilities too much.
      I think this is a pretty smart idea they went with. Have to see the efficiency now, and that only time will tell.

I'm pretty sure the US had a shot round for their 40mm in Vietnam, so I know it's workable. My guess is that, when you want a hell of a lot of light shot (which you do for drones) and you also want it to have good range, you need that shot to move quickly, hence they're using these barrel extensions for 12 bore shells. Still seems like a rather clunky. I'd think having one guy out of ten with a pump action as well as his rifle would still be a better fix. I also have to say it's pretty funny how they're pretty much made a muzzle-loading-breach-loading shotgun 😂

    The drone warfare in the Ukraine is no joke. If you hop on the YNC and go to the war page its filled up with mostly all drone attacks on both sides. Its sick... (not in the cool kinda sick either)
    Honestly its terrifying to me to see how real people out there is doing everything from playing dead, killing themselves and just being tortured by these drones. Dudes out there all alone... wounded and abandoned by their squad. Just getting these grenades dropped on em. Just waiting there to die horribly... Its sad. I say a little prayer for all those fallen in that war. Their families and all of em. Its pretty crazy how effective these drones are and I personally think its our first real glimpse into piloted AI warfare... which I think will be what war eventually evolves into. Remotely piloted robots of all kinds. I mean it wont be long and well be seeing and hearing about unmanned remotely piloted tanks and shit. And these guys piloting this shit are SICK.
    Maybe its because watching these deaths thru a screen slightly takes the reality of it away and makes it feel less...significant. Like watching people get blown up on a movie or tv show vs you being there, feeling the explosions and hearing the screams and sounds of agony from broken warriors. I do prey that those who are dealing with the scariest shit out there I prey gods with them and their families. Cause the shit going down out there is no joke. These are all just young men who aint even really started life yet as an adult and some of them are out there right now, tourniquets applied to their legs and arms, laying in a field somewhere waiting for one of these drones to finish him off. While we sit at our computers and talk about it.

That is all this effectively is. There are some speciality use cases where chamber adapters can be handy, one might chamber down one chamber of a large anti-bear revolver to a small 22 caliber for small game purposes. This is likely great innovation for Russia, cheap light weight, disposable, allows them to show they are taking action to help the troops. A common shotgun, with lots of ammo for practice and time on the sheet range might be more effective.

    Seems like a pretty good idea to me. Loads of comments saying it's pointless because of this or that issue, but they're missing the point. Sure, this has its issues, but it's a cheap and simple way to add at least _some_ amount of anti-drone capability _right now_ to a lot of squads who might otherwise not have any.
    Yes, you could design something better given a bit of time, and get it manufactured given even more time. Fine, do that too.
    Sure, you only get one shot, so if you miss or there are multiple drones you're still screwed. But it's better than no shots, surely?
    For every problem you can think of there are going to be at least some situations where that problem doesn't apply, and so this thing will be useful in at least some situations. Would you rather have it or not? I'd rather have it.

    For anyone wondering why the Russians won't manufacture 40mm birdshot munition similar to the US Army M576 buckshot grenade for M203. Russian under-barrel grenade launchers of the GP family are caseless muzzleloaders and the propellant is inside the grenade itself. This means it is much harder (or even impossible) to design a caseless buckshot system which leaves no fouling in the barrel.

    2:28 is the picture for a stationary target at 30m. It's going to be much worse beyond that, projectiles will lose more energy and observer UAVs should be mostly fine, staying beyond effective range.
    Drones are incredibly hard to spot. They are really quiet, small and the sky is big. You may not get a lot of time to line up a shot.
    Lastly, they can be surprisingly quick and manoeuvrable. Just look at some FPV racing, it's crazy! Military purpose drones will eventually make use of quiet extreme evasive maneuvers.
    A single shot shotgun, attached to a "heavy" AK, doesn't seem the most effective defense. Even with a hit at 40m, that thing probably came from above and will continue on a ballistic trajectory.
    It's technically a solution, but I feel any semi or pump action would do a better job.
