Back in the ‘90’s, I played golf with Slim on several occasions. I can genuinely say, he is one of the nicest people you could wish to be with! He was very ‘normal’. He was kind and thought. Humble yes. I even had the pleasure of being invited round to his house in Coventry. He had a 3 bed semi. His silverware was kept in the front room and I do remember a small photograph of him driving his yellow ATS that was sat on top of his TV in the back room/ living room. A lovely bloke!
After ten seconds, I was nervous about the "posh person, pretending to be a worker" cap. I stayed. This bloke is a diamond presenter. And then...it ended
He’s a former engineer and salesperson I think at Rover. Very funny tales of his career in motor manufacturing, both in U.K. and Germany.
@@GT380man He's a business development manager in the engineering world, I don't think he ever was an engineer but he's a top bloke and super passionate about cars 😀
What a great story. My late father worked for Rover Longbridge for 38 years. I was the musical director for the Rover Concert Band. I've owned a number of Rovers including a 620Si and an 800 coupe. I sold it when the mechanic who looked after he retired. Now I'm a Jag man.
So now you have a whiff of money laundering about you. Nice move though.
@@iannjoroge5867 not at all.
Rover car company had a band?!
@@nakoma5 Yes they did. It was based at the Longbridge plant. I joined as a Trombonist in the mid 1990s. I became Musical Director of the concert band a couple of years later. There was an 18 piece big band and a traditional jazz band as well. I performed with all of them
The trad jazz band appeared on BBC Children in Need when Pebble Mill studios were still there. During the protest March, the traditional jazz band was in the procession, with the concert band performing in Cannon Hill park
Having watched a lot of truck racing in my youth AND being a drummer, I of course know Slim Borgudd. How could I have not?
The Rover 600 may not have raced, but James Thompson raced the sister Accord in the BTCC in 1998.
I had a gorgeous burgundy 620 with the Honda engine back in the day. She was a quick ole thing, was thinking about her the other day funnily enough. Be great to see the slip racing
"Put it in the skip" *proceeds to put it on the back seat as instructed 🤣
1:45 goosebumps. Cycled past there as a kid many many times, even when the plant was on the other side of the dual carriage way too. Born at the JR, grew up in Cowley. Still remember the smell of the fumes from the paint shop in the late 80s when i would be walking to school.
The Great British eccentric in their natural environment 😂👏👍
I bought (even though you offered me a free copy), read and enjoyed your book! Even lent it to a relative who also enjoyed it!
All the best with the 620!
Slim was a good guy - I worked with him for a while in the late 00s, he drove me mad a few times, but he had some good stories to tell! The touring car and truck racing stuff was pretty cool and impressive tbh.
If you’ve got any stories, we’d love to hear them!
My first job in my apprenticeship was working in my local Rover dealership prepping and test driving the new cars i couldn't believe i got to do that at 17 /18 when i look back i had one of the best jobs in the dealership the whole building was demolished and a B&M bargains built on the site
So, is 24 hours of lemons coming to the U.K., or is that poor old 620 going to get exiled to the States?
It’s going to the States!
awesome stuff jay fascinating thank you so much for sharing this
24hr. Of Lemons !!
Everybody with any desire should do this !!
Slim Borgudd? He was also a succesful Truck (lorry) racing driver.
Have the very same 620 resting/rusting here 😀
Fantastic, James! Fascinating story well presented. I really enjoyed it!
Save some of your remaining sanity and make the interior smell much better ,get a bucket and fill it with damp straw ,from the pet shop leave it in the car when your not working on it and after a couple of days the smell will start to get much less.
Sliced onions do the same. Painters used to use them for absorbing paint fumes indoors
Loved my 620. Dark green with a beige interior and real wood trim. Owned it for 6 years way back when my kids were small...........they're in their 30's now and yes - I was old before my time!
I had the 820 Vitesse Sport but always liked the 620 TI models.
Great video
Pushing the gratuitous rover, east midlands and abba mocking aside... a great video and would love more 👍
Absolutely Brilliant!!!
I am glad I watched to the end
Ha, cool video. Slim was a client of my dads many many years ago.
I always love the Rover 600 ,it looks cool and understated
Hey! I bought the book 😇
That’s there the other one went!
This is peak car nerd territory. And I LOVE it.
5:55 you are showing footage of Made in Sweden. He was not part of that seventies line-up of the band, the drummer shown in the clip is Vesa Aaltonen.
My bad. He kinda looked about right
Slim was a decent F1 driver back in the day, only points for the first six places and the cars broke all the time.
I remember, they said at the time, Abba paid for it, not sure if they paid anything in the end.
He was a legend in truck racing
Hi James (or anyone else here who’s figured it out) I can’t find Rich’s support link. I’d actually like to contribute to his madness but can’t for the life of me find out where it is - there just seems to be a ton of lemons via but can’t find anything for him
Rich needs to post more on his own channel!
I bought his books, they are fantastic!
TY 🙏🙏
I had loads 214 to 827 never got let down by any of them. My favourite was my 820 vitesse my word that was a weapon. But Honda engined 827 sli was awesome also. What wasn’t awesome was doing 150mph in a 220 turbo coupe and getting caught 😂😂😂😂
Audi A8 D4.5 next please
You are a very good storyteller.
GO Rover ❤❤❤
Slippery salesman that you would not trust with your granny...
Honda?
James, you have lost weight mate.
Interesting story, thanks. I always rather liked the 600 series and made a mistake buying a 75 (a year younger, higher miles) not a 620 Ti with 60k on the clock. It turned out my boss had a 75 but not a connie and he was not well pleased.
For me the 75 was not what it said on the tin, more a "not quite" car. I sold it and got a Jag.
