You should ALWAYS use gloss black as a base. And you really should back away from the object while spraying. A good 10” distance.

Thanks for taking the time and money to do this and share! I agree with a few comments about the clear, sanding and buffing after a nice base coat. However on such a small reveal for your light bezels, I doubt it would matter. It may matter on larger areas though.

I think that maybe you should have used a gloss black instead of a matted black or a regular black. I've seen other videos here on CZcams where they use a gloss black as the base paint and it looked real nice.

I really enjoyed your comparison video and for once it seemed the most expensive was the best which is not always the case in our current marketing world but Duplicolor has always been sold in good automotive stores for matching stock colors of cars so they are still adhering to their high standards it seems. Thanks for doing this as seeing is believing and I'm a new sub today.

The spatters you are having are not the paint but the operator, if you watch closely, you are releasing pressure from the nozzle just about the spraying material.
Hope this helps figuring out origin of the “fish eye” spatters 😅

🟥 How bout another test? This time...
    1) start with a very smooth, flat, surface.
    2) A high gloss black base then wetsand with 2500 paper.
    3) At least 3 coats of your choice of chrome paint.
    4) Wetsand chrome paint with 2500 paper.
    5) 3 coats of 2K clear. (Amazon)
    6) Wetsand clear with 2500 paper.
    7) Machine polish for final finish.
Remember...The final step in Real chrome plating, after nickel, is clear then buff.

Agreed. Though achieving the shine while using even super fine sanding seems to me that you will still remove the paint and also the clear coat.

Geeesh.. Can't anyone just appreciate the video for what it is. Your not the only one that looks at all those cans in the store (knowing it's not Chrome in a can) but for some projects it will serve it's purpose !! I'd love to know your results respraying the 2nd one that came out like a firehose. I just did the same thing a few weeks ago with a few cans I had laying around to fill in the small rust spots on a Chrome Steel Pit Bike Rim. It was working good but the bike sat so long with water pooling at bottom there was a large deeply pitted area. If anyone else comes across a similar project I ended up painting the hub, spokes and center of outside ring of rim Black. Then ground down the rust till smooth and then sanded gradually going finer on sandpaper till the bare steel was polished to a Chrome like finish that blended in nicely with the remaining Chrome. Gave it a quick polishing and then put a Gloss Clear Coat over the entire Chrome/Polished Steel area. It not being a Show Bike and being what it is, a 15 year old Pit Bike. Standing and looking down at it you'd never know, IT LOOKS GREAT !! 👍

    • @swalowit
      @swalowit Před rokem +1

Oh also prior to doing my test I also read people saying black base coat but I also read some saying Gloss White. So I did the exact same thing except instead of two different blacks I did Gloss Black and Gloss White and it definitely made a difference. Some looked better with the black, some the white. I guess it makes since especially for the Metallics since Metallics are supposedly translucent. The only part of my test that didn't make since and went badly was a YT vid or article I read said to Clear Coat after for a even better Chrome look. For me when I sprayed a coat of gloss clear over the top of them all it completely eliminated the "Chrome Look". A couple of the previously best looking ones turned dull greyish. I'll admit i was rushing and paint wasn't fully cured yet so I think instead of being a Top Coat it ended up basically mixing with it probably.
But bottom line I'd love to hear if you tried clear coating and if so if it made it look even shinier or what. Then also if you end up experimenting with different color bases and that 2nd can of Rust-Oleum ?
THANKS !! I do a lot of low budget Restorations to Tractor's and stuff so this info is very helpful. 👍

Chrome out of a can. I was hoping this would be a proper review with the steps of accomplishing the end result being followed.
As a couple comments also mentioned the shaking up of the cans being a thing that should’ve been done. Off camera. No one wants to watch that. It’s a thing that should be done and stared at the beginning.
But also the clear coat step. That’s the step needed to hopefully accomplish the shine.
Real chrome is a very different thing. So real chrome shine can’t be recreated with a can of spray paint.
As for getting a (at least closer) mirror finish, that’s potentially possible I’m nearly certain but it would require a clear coat and some buffing.
An actual mirror isn’t chrome. It’s silver paint onto of a black background. Probably not this type of paint however. But the glass covering the silver surface is how they accomplish the reflection.
I was really hoping this video was going to be the answer. I’ve tried unsuccessfully a few times to use the silver (chrome) paint and it was never worth the cost or effort.
Clearly, it’s still not the answer I guess.

there are some issues with how you used these 'chrome' paints and they are... 1: they are best when sprayed onto a smooth shiny surface, 2: the undercoat should be a gloss black not matte of flat and 3: you sprayed onto a relatively soft surface and they should be spreyed onto a hard surface. see any demonstration for spraying 'Chrome' Paints of any kind.. alsp those are mostly enamel paints. The best are alcohol based paints...

Try ACE Hardware's Matelic finish. ITs a lot like Rustolium Matelic finish, but with a much more mirrored finish. Just do it is one light mist first coat and one heavy second (and final) wet coat. That's just two coats total. And make sure to let it dry over a week before touching as it stays tacky for several days. But the end results is worth it... just have to be really patient. I use it on my model airplanes when i do WW2 aircraft with natural metal finishes.

The best true chrome paint is Alsa Easy Chrome. But it ain't cheap 🤑. And it is a multi-step process starting with painting with high gloss black first.
But not as good as their chemical process version. Which is probably the same stuff car manufacturers use to chrome plastic parts like front grilles.
PChrome is a similar chemical chrome process too.

While I appreciate that you shared your process and results with the rest of us, it wasn’t a fare comparison since you failed to follow the directions listed on every can you used. ALL spray can (rattle can) paints specifically state to shake the can for a minimum of one (1) full minute before you use it with some brands stating even longer. Your five (5) seconds of shaking did not allow the appropriate amount of “shaking time” to adequately mix the product before you started spraying. For the best results, follow the directions next time. This will also save yourself the embarrassment of now being viewed by so many failing to follow the simple directions that everyone “should” be familiar with. Thanks again for sharing and good luck with your future projects and videos.

I really really hate the rustoleum spray heads . The spray heads over a few spray or about 3/4 of paint left in the can the paint will gather around the spray nossle and then starts to drip and drizzle the paint on to the work . I hate that and will destory the work . The old fan spray heads are great and work really good for what they are . Still not like spraying with a gun but for small jobs it is vary good .

I forgot which brand, but not like the cans of this video, the result was real shiny chrome. Not any shade of gray metallic.
