Making a Chevy Nova With NO DOORS Run Again-Finnegan's Garage Ep.73

- Way back in September 2018, David Newbern and I competed in Hot Rod Drag Week, a five-day road trip to four different drag strips. Each day we made a pass at the track and then hit the backroads of the southeast, journeying from Georgia to South Carolina, onto North Carolina, across to Tennessee and then back to Commerce, Georgia. We drove over 1,000 miles in my 1955 Chevy Bel Air and David's 1971 Chevy Nova. I ended up scoring Second Place in the A Gas class before destroying my Hemi on the last pass. David managed to finish the event after nuking his Small-Block Chevy engine on Day 4. After a parking lot engine swap he limped the car to the last track and made an epically slow 24 second pass but still completing the event.
Shortly after Drag Week we made a new friend, Hunter White, who gave Newbern his 540ci Big-Block Chevy and Tremec TKO five-speed gearbox so that Newbern could get his car back in one piece. Newbern has been collecting parts ever since in preparation for hearing the car roar to life once again.
His new goal is to return to Drag Week in September 2019, do a wheelie, run a 10 second pass, and finish the event. This is the first in a series of videos about getting the Nova ready for racing. The new drivetrain is already in the car and now it's time to revamp the fuel system with a Quick Fuel Brawler 1,050 cfm carburetor and Holley fuel pressure regulator.

I remember as a kid being super impressed when my dad swapped a mechanical fuel pump on a 350 on the side of the road. 25 years later my buddy had one fail in a parking lot. When I swapped it out I kinda lost a little bit of that childhood awe...but thanks dad for teaching how to fix junk.
I swapped one out the other day (on a 3rd gen Nova no less). It's kind of uneventful if you are familiar with wrangling the new gear. A friend was over and I was like "I don't seem to be getting fuel. I'll swap the pump. See if that'll fix it. Hey could you go get me a cup of coffee." When he got back "Ok, now crank it." It blew his mind. He thought I'd be having to drop the tank or some other kind of pain-in-the-assery. The simplistic beauty of owner-serviceable rock-stupid old vehicles.
Turns out the rubber line from the tank to the frame hard line was bad and sucking air. Oh well. Old fuel pump ends up in the pile of spare SBC whatevers. I'm sure I'll use it again someday.
Can't wait to see the Ramp truck vs the Galaxy 🤯💯
I was thinking the ramp truck was gonna pull on the Galaxy but Cletus had to puss out and shoot it with juice.
EVERYONE knew he would. You don't give someone especially Garrett a NOS button and expect not to use it, thats the whole point of having it.
Ramp trucks going down, going to be seeing the Galaxy tail lights all the way.
i was shocked to see the Galaxy run 13.5... without the hit..
I feel their gonna use nos, and the engine is going to explode
With how goofy this world can be at times, there is still some awesome people out there! What a score on the engine, that nova is going to be a beast!
another little tech tip, at 7:07 if you look behind the radiator hose there is a bolt hole that is there to hold the fuel pump push rod up, while you install the pump. just screw a bolt in there lightly to hold the rod.
You guys laughing and giggling is awesome. Keep up the good work!
This is why you keep a spare starter in the trunk or in a box under the workbench. I like you guys because you remind me of my friend Tom and myself 30+ years ago trying to keep our rides going on a budget. I'm not a Nova fan but for this one I can make an exception. Good show, good folks having fun, Thanks
misleading title lol you should change it to, "David kicks gas all over the floor and the Nova doesn't run again."
actually, finnegan was the one who kicked the gas pan.
@@drewdavis2833 I stand corrected: "Mike kicks gas all over the floor and the Nova doesn't run again."
That's more of a "This time on Roadkill..."
Drew Davis cnco
Your killing us Finnegan. Let's see that damn water rocket run!!!
It has.... 2nd latest video
You guys agree 11/10 of awesome! I love how you laugh through the disappointment! Don't stop!
Thanks for the Video. I thought sure I was going to see Ramp Truck Stomps Galaxy, but you and Dave have such a good time working on anything, that your stomping the Galaxy can wait.....
I was just watching some old videos
Wondering when you was going to put more up lol
Good stuff man !!!!
Y'all please keep making these videos. I learn something once in awhile but I always have a good laugh. Thanks
title is wrong.. it didn't run and it has doors.... i feel cheated
krashdown102 No Doors > More Doors Nova!!??? (Attempted) Murder Nova... punny punny punny funny bunny!
The Nova is coming along nicely. Another great video 👍
I gotta get one of those shirts!! I have a soft spot for 50s stying and gassers and you meshed them perfectly!! From one minitrucker to another... Props brother!!
I love your videos dude! I wish you were able to put out more content, but I understand you're a busy guy. I can't wait to see the race between you and Cleetus!!!
David mentions The Earle Camino, that was one of my favorite RK cars. I hope y’all still have that car stashed away somewhere I’d love to see it again.
No they sold it. But apparently the new owner is going to put a drivetrain in it to do Dragweek this year.
Mark Thomas they sold it? What the hell? Why? Was that mentioned in a episode?
@@davidgoodrich1258 David Newbern explained it in a recent Instagram comment.
@@davidgoodrich1258 . I think it was on David's Instagram account.
Your gonna have to pull that boat out of there when filming other videos, my eyes are glued to that sexy beast. Sick video! I’ve kicked many catch pans over in my shop 😂
Got to love those days when no matter how hard you try or how much you do it just don't happen. But another day is on its way :-)
Ha watched this at lunch made my day. Thanks boys keep it going from southern Ontario
That universal pose of "there is something cold and wet touching my back" non mainstream apparel advertising there.
Today a pair of Van's and homies shirt was sacrificed in the making of this video
Don't forget Dave's mental state!
I really appreciate what you do you inspired me to start working on my car
Cleetus: so I thought you were bringing the ramp truck...
Nice Alloy shirt! I talked to the owner at the Zip Tie Drags in Tucson this year for a good 30 min. Super cool guy.
Hunter you are a champion to enable a speed addiction.
I had a mechanical fuel pump go bad in a small block 350. Filled the entire engine with gasoline, to the point it was puking out the breather. Luckily I caught it quick and shut it off. Didn't bend anything. New mechanical fuel pump, oil change, still driving it. Love small block chevys.
I hope someday you guys will do a video of a complete engine disassembley and rebuild the way you do it so we can get more tech tips. Great video that shows the love and hatred of vehicles.
That's awesome fr 💯 that's why i love the car community 💯🙌❤
I had a mechanical S.W. electric fuel pump fail while I was pulling in Lebanon Valley Speedway in NY years ago. The guy in the parking lot said, that my fuel tank was leaking. I went under the car and having an aviation back ground I had redundancy. I swapped the AN line from one bad pump to the spare good pump under the back of the car, switched wires, since I had a them the same and drove in the show, 15 minutes later. Later that day a guy at the track said, their was a car like mine outside the gate that would not run because of a bad leaky fuel tank. I told him that was my car and told him what I did. He did not believe me because he said, who puts a spare fuel pump in a car!
Love how you guys have fun working on the cars too. That's what the car hobby is all about.
That's it, I'm changing my name to Lev Rimiter @ 4:40 lol
A carb and a mechanical fuel pump. You guys are really going old school. Get rid of that MSD and use a magneto!!
...and hand crank the engine. It would've been running already!
ziiofswe - I was thinking that also.
Magneto? Nope, twin point mallory circa 1972 lol
Hell Yeah !! A Judson electronic Magneto like I used to run on my old 69 Camaro back in the seventies.
I sure could use that front accessory drive on the 468 in my 79 Malibu! Help a brother out! It hasn't run in three years!
Nice of you to leave us hanging, Dave ... At least you could have bought a decent starter ... sheesh. Get that thing started already! ;-) It was a free motor/trans, what more could you ask for?? Oh, yah, a free running motor/trans would be better, eh? You'll get there, brother. Just a little patience ... with or without Mike dumping gas down your back!
bout time we get to see a nova, all the years of roadkill and roadkill garage and have never seen one near you guys i always found that kind of weird lol.
There's two novas on street outlaws.
The Murder Nova (2 door)
The Mo-door Nova (4 door)
Now we have the No-door Nova
More like the 1 door nova
Mike, thanks for taking the time to run the OG ramp truck against Cleetus's Ford Galaxy also thank you for your channel as a (free) alternative to RK I've been watching and realized I hadn't sub'd, so I fixed that!
18 yrs old and finally picked up my 72 this week, my dream car. Gonna be long process but well worth it
TOO COOL!!!! You guys rock... shout out from TN!
I just found your channel and you still crack me up. But i miss the roadkill videos with you and Freiburger. But i'm subscribing i have videos to catch up on.
Great Episode!!! Need to see the sequel....!
And the title of the video is not 100% correct aas the Nova did not run...
Though I fear we may never see it, the ramp truck with BlaspHemi on it pulling a trailer with Attempted Murder Nova on it, heaven.
I had the shittiest day, but this cracked me up so bad! 😂😂
How I've been feeling with my chevelle David, lol
Every step forward has been a kick in the nuts, between fitment issues and putting the wrong flex plate on the engine during install, 6 months of lists and double checking and planning and still having issues, but it's getting there, yours is gonna be alot cooler though 👍
Well, at least Ep.74 we should hear her purrrrr. And I might add, that is one gorgeous Holley carb.
Wow, Dave looks like he’s lost some weight. Looking good Dave!
Sounds great!!!
In the 90s I had a 5 litre v8 nova for three years here in the UK, I miss that car so bad.
This car seems like the Martyr Nova is a more fitting name.
I think they're calling it murder nova? Anyhow I think you are right, maybe the murdered nova.
Wow, that is a BIG block !
That carbuerator is bigger than my toilet bowl
The drag boat is a really pretty garage decoration
Love the Fast and the Furious danger to manifold
Nothing better than the refreshing feeling of an armpit full of gasoline on a hot summer day.
8:40... I’ve not laughed out loud that hard in a while. 😂😂😂
Sounds like an old school roadkill episode. 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🇺🇸
Looks familiar. Love the big block but everything is sooo expensive, I sold my Dart 582" in favor of a stock rod/piston/crank GM 6.0
cv 67 I’ve done some expensive builds. No matter what it is you’re always waiting for the day it grenades. It hurts much less when it’s a junkyard engine and you can pick up another for cheap. But if you have deep pockets and want all the power, by all means run that dart big m
Sorry Dave I feel your pain, great video mucho gasseus!
Wait, wrong title. Lol and love the out script at the end. Hugged my beautiful wife and drove my truck.
Episode 53 of Finnegans Garage..yeah I recall that one it was about 7-8 years ago.
Yes
Great video
Boy just about turned his wheel into a quick release
Thanks Mike & Co. i'm gonna go wrench my lada.
I've had a couple mechanical fuel pumps fail. Back when i still messed with old school sbc stuff. They where bought new too. Gas now days just kills them
That noise at 17:00, every car person can relate to this feeling.
Pro tip for SOME SBC fuel pump push rods, early SBC blocks and looks like maybe this Dart block (maybe one of the front motor mount holes from before mounts on the side were used) Early blocks had holes for both mount types (a plate across the front vs the rubber mounts on the sides we’re all used to... just trying to remember out loud) when the motor is too hot for grease to hold the push rod in place... use a longer bolt in the hole in the front of the block in front of the push rod to hold it in. Just tighten the bolt on the rod and it holds. Don’t forget to take the long bolt back out and replace it with the stock short bolt BEFORE starting. Old school baby!
Why not push start it David???
Edit: the name of the old school mounts for SBC is the horseshoe mount, long 3/8 bolt in the correct hole locks the fuel pump pushrod in place to change fuel pump when grease won’t work.
Thank you so much Finnegan for staying on CZcams free.
Awesome guys
Ramp truck gonna take down the galaxy? Can’t wait!
Is there a video of them getting this beast running?! I'd really really like to see and hear it! Glad he's got a good set up!!! 👍
just bought a brawler a few weeks back, the throttle response is great
Dang it! Lol. If I had a nickel for every time something messed me up like that I'd be rich. Fun episode, I enjoyed it.
Good stuff!
Great video about the trials and pointless shit that goes into building your ride. I've gone thru my fair share.
The pain of anticipation hahah. Good video boys
Dude I fuckin love you😂😂, you’re a geek “hug somebody attractive” haha, You keep editing the vids man that was great
should run awesome! cant wait for next video! #ramtruck ftw!
Looking forward to hearing that 540 combust some combustibles.
Nice improvements on the audio 👍
Mike I live about 2 miles from you and hope to see you out somewhere to say hello. Long time fan of your shows
8:15 is the funny part.new title of spilling gas on David
Watching your video while working on my 53 Bel Air 4 door gasser, wishing it was Blasphemi
lucky sob wow, time to get this beast going with a free heart.
Favorite body style ever
I think I laughed the most at this then anything I have watched today
It damn shore has a pretty boat sitting next to it!
Thank god this is still a thing and not behind motor trend on demand.
I suspect the reason you had alternator problems was due to ypur bad grounds, not because of too much draw.
Looks much better than my '70 Nova. Mine has been off the road since '96 with just over 43,000 miles. I haven't even started it since 2009. Even tried to give it away to Roadkill several years ago... LOL
Hopefully someday I'll do something with the Nova.
Now if I can just rehome my crappy '87 Camaro.
Where you at and how much do you want.
Man it must be awesome to have sponsors like this
My first car was a '72 Nova with the 307 v8. It was a fun car to drive
DAAAAAMN! I guess if you're going send it... send it.
"warning, do not attempt anything you see here at home, we're trained professionals" 🤣
My uncle Ricky had a story about a Nova. It was parked it outside an abandoned building, when some guy with a spanking shotgun came running out of the building and stole it. Cops said he got to 83 before crashing into a tree outside of a university.
I will have a nice Nova, one day soon hopefully.
I had that same fuel pump on my 465hp 383 and it wouldn’t keep up on the dyno. It was with E85 and a quick fuel 750 e85 carb. Motor was going lean on the top end. Switched it out to an A1000 electric pump and everything was fine on the dyno after that.
I missed the "Makes it Run Again" part?
They're in the process of making it run, doesn't say they made it run
This is the first video in a series to make the Nova run again, they're working on it
@@tserra6270 Title says "Makes" Not "Making". Ten months later and still not running as far as I know. Then again I could have missed that part as well.
There once was a man named Michael Finnegan,
He has whiskers on his chinnegan,
They couldn't get the nova to go vroom again,
Poor old Michael Finnegan begin again
lol!
There once was man from Nantucket.
Matthew Wright We need more of this !!!!
Since a mechanical fuel pump is being installed on the 540 ci. Do you need to put in a "SPECIAL" full pump rod to be compatible with the type of Camshaft installed in the engine? Just like how a certain type of distributor gear is required? Before it either wipes out the rod or cam lob?
Are you going to put slicks on the ramp truck for the galaxy race?
The Earle Camino episode of Roadkill is the first time I saw Mike Cotton on Roadkill.
