Why I can't reach CELESTIAL rank in Guilty Gear Strive right now is because of influencers like LK, who generously share knowledge about the game, thus levelling up the entire FGC, thus making the average skill level higher. It's really sweaty up here, in floors 8, 9, & 10, when I'm constantly going up and down. I'll just keep grinding though and gladly take in the advice I can get to get through the gatekeepers. Floors 8,9 and 10 are comparable to bronze and silver ranks in a game like street fighter. Most people don't even know how to play the game yet.

Bruh, every time I make it to my challenge matches, I keep getting matched against 700K + VIP players. Between PS5 and PC I've made it there 6 times. My third time I matched up against Chris G... Dude, wtf!?!?!

They will probably need to add some ranks either between 10th floor and Celestial or on top of Celestial down the line, cause the skill gap will just keep increasing imo.

I made it to VIP with Nago the other day. It's highly possible. There are some killers who know how to use nago. I'm only level 230. Came across a 1000 level nago and we had epic mirror matches in the celestial floor.

My biggest hurdle getting into Heaven was mostly that once I hit floor 10, people got exponentially more choosy on if they wanted to actually fight or not, so my biggest challenge became just getting a match.
I remember spending nearly 20 minutes in floor 10 trying to get a match cause my floor only had an I-no and Potemkin that absolutely refused to fight me (I'm an Axl main)

Literally, it wasn’t like this in any other floor. If you accidentally match up with the same person who dodged you, they’ll still refuse to play you.
It's weird cause I only really see Axl mains complain about this. You'd think people would be more eager to dodge the more oppressive characters but it's always Axl
I'm a Zato-1 main. I really wish this game forced matchmaking after a certain point. The current lobby system promotes metagaming by only picking matchups that are favorable to you. It especially sucks for me because I hate playing Millia, Giovanna, and Ramlethal but that's like 90% of what I see. If I wait for only Potemkin then I would be waiting a half hour in between and they wouldn't rematch me.
I'm capped at 9 for now. Chilling in park to get more uninterrupted practice instead of bouncing btwn 9 and 8

Question, can you get de-ranked while playing in Park? I wanna try different characters without having to worry about dropping all the way down from floor 10 to floor 7 (I get de-ranked a lot when I'm not playing my main)

I made it to celestial with my main I-No then I ran into a level 348 Chipp.
This is my first GG game and the first fighting game I’ve played with a fight stick since I was a kid. Stuck on floor 6 with Gio. Think my biggest hurdles are just knowing how the game works mechanically and not messing up inputs constantly. Thanks for the tips LK!
Same bro I got up to floor 8 off pure fighting game mechanics and got knocked back down to the top tiers . Gotta learn the gg system more but I’m enjoying playing gio!
I would first do all of the missions, then online, study a bit what other characters do and what your tendencies are, and then focus on combos around floor 8+

Level 200 Kys are my weakness T-T I see one and I fear that he’ll be my only 2 losses… I would also include axl, but I don’t find them often
Ram is Fine, shes got shit frames, and no true plus frames. the real problem is millia and chip and ino. those characters just exist tomix you up. and i find gussing alot more broken then waiting for my turn. everyone is saying their trash now, but watch 3 months or more into this game, people will see. guessing characters are busted.

I always pay attention to May like a hawk when I see her move forward on the ground. That's when I know she can't dolphin.
I mean this isn't a bad strategy but it is possible for May to use her vertical dolphin while dashing forward. I'm not sure if a lot of low level players know this tech though so you should be fine for the most part.
Saying switch character, when I know Anji is part of the reason it's difficult to beat the celestial challenge, gives me even more drive to just perfect him.

Go for it man. Dancing gorillas represent. I dont even think hes near as bad as people make it out to be though. Forget characters (beyond learning the matchups) and just focus on beating the player. A lot you can do with any character once you sniff out habits. Good luck man
Don't give up. I'm in a similar position. While I'm not an anji player, I play potemkin and it has kinda been a struggle I've been bouncing between floor 8 and 9 but I'm not going to give up on my boy pot.

I've been trying out most of the roster, so it's been actually kind of fun, getting kicked back down to a low floor and working my way up again as I learn them!

Was thinking about doing the very same thing (picking up Zato and plummeting). I'm never hitting celestial either way, and I'm ok with that. I'll just keep charting small improvements and having fun.

Thank you Lordknight for this video. As An I-No player, I struggle against May, Sol, and Ramlethal specifically. These were some great tips especially since Ram's buttons are the literal reason I am stuck on the 9th and 10th floor and also that last bit of advice you gave about just grinding it out gave me so much more motivation. I thought for a while that I was doing everything wrong but in reality, I should be focusing on just getting better at what I'm doing, knowing my matchups, and playing mistake-free. As an I-no main, I can't get hit by these characters or she explodes, These were some great tips thanks

Biggest tips to get really strong, really fast.
Find a very good player ( celestial player) in Park.
And then play and play, and each game observe where you get punished and why you don t broke his guard or deal a lot of damage.
And then go to training and fix that.
If it's damage, go learn more damaging combos
If it's defense make the dummy do the sequence of attacks you struggle to block and try to find a solution
If it's neutral try using different approach and see how do you get punished to find a solution ( positioning, air approach, ground approach, run block, run poke, jump guard, empty jump...)
If it's tension management and neutral basics, go look at pro gameplay and see what they do to approach and how they use their tension, at the end it could take 10 hours of training to replicate approximately a pro strat
Most of the time People don t progress because they don t try to progress
They don t want to go to training and they just play match waiting that they get good miraculously
You can get strong by playing match but you only get strong with your reflex and positionning, you ll be more at ease but you will not learn New strat and it will take longer to get strong this way
Best way to get good fast after 1 match is build straits around frame traps and plus frames.Why? Because 95% of the opponents you WILL face will block.When you negate the times your opponent can mash,you WILL build tension faster.Gold Burst is very smart to do early since Burst in Strive comes back fast af.
Every character in the game has a plus frame/guard break move and/or swings that leave you at smaller plus vaules of blockstun(plus frames).Once you have meter you use blue roman on top of your offense to FORCE your opponent to either drain there meter to FD or they can get mixed.

I've had the chance to play with some really good people, and some really degenerate people, but I've been stuck between floor 7-9 for the longest time. Hopefully I can grind it out good. The tower system is nice. TBH i don't even care about rank in this game. I'm having a great time getting good matches at around floor 8 and 9. The game's solid netcode and absolutely sublime gameplay. I'm maining Millia and i NEVER play setup based quick characters, i always usually go with footsies based neutral control type characters so it's really a change for me. Great game, love strive, thanks LordKnight for all your tutorials on Millia they helped so much.

It's true, I ran over most players in floor 9-Celestial using Pot (also Ky), they have great options against common player tendencies.

Reached celestial with Millia a couple days ago but still feel like I'm nowhere near good at GG yet, the fighting game journey is a tough one.

I know that feeling. I got my first Celestial invite a couple of days after launch, and finally won my way in five tries later. All it did is make me feel like maybe getting to Celestial is a bit too easy, because I'm nowhere near the top ranks of any other fighting game, lol.
But hey, gatekeeping other people from getting in is fun, so I shouldn't complain. Got a double perfect on a Pot player that was 1 win away from getting to stay the other day, that was hilarious.
Join online tournaments, use it as a test to see where you’re at and keep getting better! I ended up joining a tournament the other day and actually made top 8 out of 42 people and I’ve only been playing the game for like a week. It showed me I need to work on things but I had fun playing in a more competitive environment.

Didn't meet many Potemkins suprisingly, so I didn't lab him in depth yet. Learning that his Megafist is punishable on block is very useful tho when I finally fight them.

10:55 - I learned this the hard way yesterday. A Ram stole a number of rounds from me in my sets thanks to that overdrive. I'm now keeping a closer eye on her meter going forward.
Coming from DBFZ without Zoning, I thought learning Nago was going to be difficult, but man I felt like this character was made for my hands.

As a very new player, who has only played online a few matches only to identify weaknesses, I have definitely thought about character vs character match ups. There's another huge hurdle for us newbies, we have no answers. I know how I get my ass kicked, I know the problems, just can't figure out the answers. XD This video was huge.
I've found it easy to hit floor 10 but actually beating the celestial challenge feels so hard. Anywhere below even on floor 9 or 10 I feel almost unstoppable as a Ram player who knows the frame traps SQ shows off in tournament but then the celestial floor humbles me and reminds me how much I don't know in match ups or even just in general.
I reached the floor.... now i just need to get the dubs. With milia too, all because of your guides :D... edit: I DID IT!!!!
for ram as anji you can spin through her corner pressure, block the sword and spin the explosion. if the ram does anything but grab you either get out for free or get a counter hit close slash. if they throw both against anji i almost always spin. because i can jump/tech the throw or burst if they read it. either way ram if forced to play neutral without her swords.
Manually timing safejumps for Millia 2H 214P and 6H 214P knockdowns has been the hardest out of these, specially against Leo players.
It also feels like jH has so little blockstun sometimes, I keep getting grabbed after it.
Funny this video comes up now, cause I've gone through (and failed) the Celestial challenge like 6 times now, and somehow 90% of the games I've played were against Giovanna. I know the other characters are there- they're playing on other cabs- but I always end up against a Giovanna.
Game is fun as heck and I'm having fun figuring stuff out, spending a bunch of time on Training mode finding what's safe or not, trying out different things, trying to get myself to FD more etc.
Edit from 20 hours later: I cleared the Challenge now, without fighting a Gio- fought Axl, Ky and Ram

I grinded my way to celestial and found out that, ironically, heaven is full of demons. Level 300+ chips, nagas, sols, etc. So I guess I'm in limbo now. Always getting let in and immediately kicked out of heaven.

Honestly I feel like the floors don't mean much yet, I hit floor 9 relying solely on my dbfz basics and I'm slowly learning matchups (50% of games are ramlethal I swear). Most people up to now actually don't know how to maneuver key aspects of the game, so once you figure that hey can't either block on wakeup, tech grabs, stop jumping into my 6P, it's pretty straightforward. Now on floor 9 people are starting to utilise their character's strength so I had to actually sit and learn Ram's corner pressure, how to challenge I-no's strokes etc... Thanks sajam for answering the basic questions of "how tf do I deal with x" and you for the broader advice

I don't know about the point made at 1:55 The lobby system gives you a choice with who you want to fight, meaning you can dodge anything you even feel slightly uncomfortable taking if you wanted to. I was able to go from F8 to heaven from just dodging sol, may, and ram. I'd still suggest learning every matchup, though.
I tried getting vip once, on my first attempt I only took Axl vs pot matches. And I was 1 game away from getting VIP. That being said this is incredibly unfair and there needs to be something preventing me from doing this.

the best time to good at fighting games is when it first come out, got a ton of fresh new players, lots of new things people are still learning. Plenty of people of similar skill to train against. Plenty of guides, and streams to check out, tournaments,etc. First GG game that I've played , went ahead and purchased the old ones as well after playing strive.
I play this game off and on with friends but for the past 3 days I’ve been playing by myself and I got to floor 7 with Asuka #R Kreutz, but back down to floor 6, learning now how each character works

I been playing sol since beta was out and i was like hmm sol is a good character for me, I don’t use sol like some scrubs will i try to be on a high level was sol tbh.. soo i played online to see if i can make to the final frontier and did it 💯 .. practice is key
A lot of the casts' 6P also beats ram's standing far S. Quite useful to know.
I was bouncing around 7-8 on the Japan server and when I tried going to the US server I got 10 in an hour now I’m doing my Celestial Qualifiers. Honestly I feel boosted and want to fight it out in the Japan server since I have a harder time there. (Also how great is the netcode of this game omg)
For Ram, is there anything you can do in between the heavyslash and the sword throw gap? Also if you choose the right option, when you run past the move, are you always at advantage if you don't block the sword explosion?
I wish the towers were character specific so i can try out a new character and not have to worry about leaving the 10th floor. If i lose trying someone new that i have been working on.

As an avarage anji player, I'm really struggling passing the celestial trial, but I won't give up.
I've gotten the challenge 3 times, but it often seems to just not pop. I've gone 20/22 against only 10+ players and never got a challenge, then at some point I derank to 9, get back up, then I immediately get a challenge(well, 4-6 matches or so). I don't know if there's a cooldown on it or something else is going on, but sometimes it doesn't seem to matter how well I do and others it just inexplicably comes. At the point I went 20/22 I thought maybe you just need a massive win streak, but then after I got deranked and immediately got the challenge I lost any idea of what could be going on other than bugs or a cooldown.
But I can say that it is extremely irritating if there is a cooldown because I'm old and it hurts my hands to play a lot, so if I'm just wasting my goddamn time trying to climb when there's a cooldown I'd rather give my hands a break and not play. It really, really hurts to play for a long time, so it's frustrating as hell not knowing how far away I am from a challenge at any point.
Right now I'm not sold on maining any one character yet. I really need Jam in the game so I can just go wild.

Thanks a lot. I'm playing Ky on floor 10 and whenever a Sol wants to fight me I feel stressed out so much (I don't want to dodge any matchup). Same with Pot.
Sol is one of Ky’s worst match ups, but it’s winnable try to use 6p to whiff punish his 5s. 5k buffered into dire eclat can help situationally aswell. Look for damage more than set ups since Sol out damages Ky leaving him alive is dangerous. When Sol cancels 5h into gun flame you can super jump out if you’ve been using fd to push him back during his string. Kys far stand s is not useful in the match up so avoid using it as it’s to slow and Sol can counter poke with his 5s to easily. Instead try 5h from range to stop him approaching from the ground. I prefer safe jumps vs Sol after a throw instead of 236 h set ups since it gives more pressure and can threaten tick throw set ups aswell hope this helps a little.

Always getting to three wins then i fight somebody that is really strong, but im learning how to use Rcs more defensively and how to use Blue rcs better to get better punishes, ive fought quite a bit of Celestial people in the parks and understand how to fight characters. Grinding it out is just what I gotta do, sadly. It is what it is
Just got locked into VIP celestial with KY 💪💪I had to go up against May and a lvl 449 Leo (I'm like 102) no less 🤣 learning how to grab Leo's side switch move is such a game changer.
I been straddling between floor 10 and celestial. I am always off by just 1 more win when i reach celestial tower to get it.
I peaked at floor 7 so far in 1 week with Sol. Never played any fighting game seriously before so I’m not mad at that :D
My problem is I can't pick a character so I'm kinda just stuck at being mediocre lol. I want to play Baiken but they cut her so I'm mostly playing Anji since he's kiiind of like Baiken, but he's not exactly Baiken so I'm not fully satisfied with him so when I get bored I swap characters. So I guess I'm just not fully dedicated to the game yet, although I'm doing pretty well so far at least. I bounce around between floors 8 and 10. I really hope one of the new characters added in Season 1 is someone I can fully attach myself to, but otherwise I'm just stuck waiting until Season 2 to hopefully maybe get Baiken (since we already know she isn't gonna be in Season 1). Aba would be cool too though, I liked her when I tried out +R, but Baiken was the character I liked universally in all the games, especially in Rev 2 (I liked how they changed her moves a bit, made it even more fun IMO).

What’s your opinion on giovanna ? I mained her , I think she’s high tier but she doesn’t have some of the crazy stuff, but she does seem to have a high ceiling .
I am an I-No main, I just got on 10F. Haven't tried for Celestial yet, but I can already tell I won't be able to pass the 5/6 gate at the end of 10F.
I have dropped games to opponent that I know are patterned player, yet I still can't 100% dominate the match.
For example, I fought a sol that basically plays 50/50 DP on all his minus moves. I would bait it and get a few punishes, but would get hit by the DP once in awhile, and command grabbed then we eneded up in the same health.
I ended up going 2 - 1 just from his patterned play. And that was just one example.
Just from these matches alone, I already know I don't got a shot at celestial until I can fix that problem.

I got Flamethrower -> Buster spammed x3 and couldn't find a way out..

Why not FD cancel your air dash when trying to whiff punish? I thought that Millia-super-jump-air dash-FD-j.H was pretty nice since that allows for a 2K combo and enough height for an air dash cancel off of an as soon as possible j.H?
Why not tell people to 6P through hammerfall?
Why does it matter if they whiff an air button? Isn't the landing recovery what you are after? For example, I thought that air-dash-land has the same recovery and total duration as air-dash-j.S-land?
It's crazy he didn't say Leo's name once.
Something that has helped me is the in built replay mode. If you have a bad matchup, you can filter your character vs the bad matchup, as well as set it so only matches where your main wins are shown.
This has helped me find gaps in combos and how to punish them as well as other things.
How is rank change calculated anyway? Is every fight on a floor worth the same or does it change per opponent. I assumed it's about the difference in bounty, but I'm not getting consistent enough results to be able to see a patern there.

Question I have about Sol though: Is the strat the same for Vortex if they go for a PRC into command throw? That gets me WAY more than Vortex into RRC to continue pressure.

Just started GG, picked up Ky since he's basically a Shoto. Looking to pick up Axl. Tried him against my Faust main friend, did pretty well, but struggled while cornered or in high pressure situations. Any tips for dealing with pressure playing as Axl?

I got into the Celestial challenge once. The servers then immediantly disconnected me and kicked me out of the challenge. I've also been deranked FROM WINNING twice. 2 days ago I went on a 23 win streak in Floor 10 and no challenge attempt. I'm playing on European servers as Axl wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue.

SO basically we're supposed to guess what Sol does after far slash (cuz it's pretty much unreactable if he does a low punch for example)....

I'm stuck between floor 7-8 because I rarely even do more than a 2-3 move combo on hit even when I have meter available lmao. I can repeat high damage combos in training just fine but for some reason I never have the mental clarity to execute them in real games.
I made up for it by winning neutral more often than my opponent. But on floor 7-8 The amount of times I win neutral in most matchups is close to equal to my opponent. And at that point my 20% damage combos lose to their 40%. Almost all the games I lose come down to my opponents simply getting more damage off each hit confirm than I do. I just wish my brain would cooperate lmao.
Probably go into those matches focusing on landing a high damage combo and winning as a second. I've found it helped when practicing in other games to fixate on the thing I'm struggling to land, even if it costs me victories in matches, until it becomes second nature
My biggest issue is Sol, even though I play Sol. People complain about him all the time, but I only ever see another one in level 9 and I get so bodied I'm back down to level 6 before he stops rematching me..
A level 500 Chipp player followed me around the lobby the first time I got up there...

Hardstuck in floor 9 with i-no, HCL whiffing on most standing characters and most running characters hurts me in a physical level
My game literally freezes when I go up or down a floor. It ices me. And, it's very annoying.
One time I had Ram close to a corner. I go for the meaty runback (236H) and I got reverse wallbroken cause of that DP super.
Not fun
Been playing since launch and have yet to get higher than 9. I get there and immediately lose one game and get sent back down. "Love" this tower system.
