New Bentley Bentayga SUV review

- The Bentayga is an incredible new SUV for a whole host of different reasons. For starters it’s every bit as good to drive as it is merely to sit in. We need to wait until we drive it on more familiar UK roads before passing a final judgement on its ultimate capabilities, preferably alongside its key rivals from Germany and the United Kingdom. But for the time being, be in no doubt; Bentley has moved the SUV game to a different part of the pitch with the Bentayga. Is it the best in the business? For the time being it’s a very strong maybe.
Steve Sutcliffe drives what Bentley claims is the "fastest, most luxurious and most exclusive SUV in the world."

did he just say "very nice f***ing place to find yourself" at 5:42? haha
+boy638 he did! a bit of irreverence is always welcome :D
+boy638 if its in the english dictionary then fuck it we might aswell use it
+boy638 That's English journos for you.
+boy638 I'm fairly certain it's"very nice fine place to find yourself"
+boy638 He was about to accidentally say "Very nice find to place yourself" but caught it halfway through.
Never let a British guy review a British car .... its like asking a mom if her baby looks cute ....
+T Al Kaabi He's one of them racist middle aged british guy anyway.
+T Al Kaabi Not just for Brits.
+T Al Kaabi It's actually endowed with German DNA now----VW Group.
spot on good chap
guess no American should review a mustang or corvette and no German should review a bmw or Mercedes?
This car looks like a VW Touareg raped a Bentley Mulsanne in the desert and this is the little kid that came out, left all alone between the empty sand dunes...
+Genjinai
It looks nothing like a Touareg.
+bighands69 lets say it has the bone structure of a touareg, but with the skin and feautres of a fat mulsanne
+bighands69 Na a Touareg looks better than this.
+Genjinai it's actualy based on the Q5 platfrom and alike Rolls Royce you can find some similitaries with german brands
Road370
No it's not. I quote from wikipedia: "It is based on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform, the same platform used in the second-generation Audi Q7 and the future third-generation Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg." So yeah...
I still can't seem to get over how ugly it is. Its desirability factor is very low, for me anyway. No doubt demand will exceed supply.
+GrotrianSeiler Doesn't look that bad. Its begging for bigger wheels, thats what. But I agree, despite looking "not bad" I still wouldn't have it.
+BlackWind I agree it's not that bad.
Bentley's are generally not the best looking cars, let's be honest. But the point of a Bentley isn't to turn heads with stunning design cues like a Lamborghini.. you turn your head because you know it's a Bentley.. something that's timeless and luxurious in a classical, kind of old-world, sense. Rolls Royce takes that notion to an extreme because.. well.. they're all ugly..
+GrotrianSeiler You say that now... Wait until Mansory, Startech, or any other second house modifiers get their hands on it. They'll make it beautiful...
this dude could never afford the payments for this car and yet he's trying to shit on it and saying "I could never desire this" lmao wtf get out of here
am i the only one that thinks the bentayga looks good?
One of them being the designer and two executives who approved it for production.
Elliot James I think you might just be.
Elliot James Yes.
It's unsightly.
Elliot James I love the design!
i really like the design. its balanced (which i do not think rangerover is (too rear heavy)) and it has lots of bentley dna
I love it, so beautiful inside and out, well done Bentley.
Now Lambo should make a new version of the LM002 to compete with this. What do you guys think?
Already got a competitor. The Urus. Sadly still a concept but in the stages of becoming a production car
+Sanandan Kinkar they will...
+Sanandan Kinkar Bentley and lambo are owned by the same people
+Sanandan Kinkar Just heard it will have a twin turbo V8 so I'm not sure if I want one. IMO all Lamborghinis should have a N/A engine.
speedometer111 I would prefer it to have hybrid drivetrain and N/A beast.Like a 918 ; )
This Korean designer for sure is talented. Corvette C6, reborn Camaro, epic Cadillac Sixteen...
But his style just isn't anywhere suitable for English cars!
Epic fail.
+KevinTheFirefighter Well it's fine to use a good VW chassis for quality and performance reasons, but having German power beneath, English guys at Crewe could have put double effort to make everything else truly British. Instead, outside it looks like a Ford SUV with Conti GT bumpers bolted on...
I think it looks great for what it is, because at this price level, you really can't design something outrageous and overly shocking. Not every brand have the guts as Lexus because people either hate Lexus new design or love it to death, but for Bentley, they can't take the risk.
Emmanuel Wang I can't agree. It's modern, this is why it is not timeless. For example, the E-type of 60s is a masterpiece, while the 60s were the angular shape era. Boxy English cars age horribly - old sharp edged RRs and Bentleys of the 80-90s cost nothing today. All Bentleys should have tender sexy lines...
Great review Steve.
Stunning video. The car's exterior looks meeh but the interior is spot on. Great review Mr. Sutcliffe.
In terms of interior not even the most expensive RangeRover can closely match this 😩
+Kings mario range rover is gay piece of shit made in India
+Sergey Popov let's be mature
+Kings mario This is the internet, so no. Btw your mom's fat.
I think the range rover is overrated .
+Sergey Popov it really isn't made in India
I like it, well done Bentley.
@autoexpress
Very good review
I just feel it could have used a visual comparison against the ranger rover vougue both on and off-road to see actually how better or worse it is and also to see if it is actually worth spending the extra money on the Bentley. A bit more video content on it's actual off roading abilities would have been good aswell even though it would be rarely used for off-roading .
👍 A very informative review nevertheless
Is it me or does this car share some stuff from the Audi Parts Bin?
Welcome to VAG! :D
like?
DGRWPF Oh really? I didn't know Bentley formed into VAG, how long ago?
TheChickenwing100 dash/speedo, safety devices on bumper and the first one I thought was the front pillar looks very much like the Q7's
MotorMike fuck me, I am out of track.
When I first saw this SUV I was trying to figure out what other SUV it reminded me so much of as far as the exterior look. At first I thought it looks like a REALLY DRESSED UP Audi Q7. Then I realized it looks a lot like the Lincoln MKT. Of course I'm not comparing any of those 2 cars to this one except for exterior design. But that's what it reminded me of was the Lincoln MKT wearing a really nice tuxedo. Look it up and you'll see what I mean.
Where was that video made ? Beautiful place...
Was that film shot on Tenerife? I thought at one moment I recognize the road although I drove there some 10 years ago...
+gutbayer @ 4:29 to be precise
When it comes round the corner at 0.47 it looks as though its some kind of a retro Austin Cambridge or Morris Oxford or a 90's basic import without any lenses for the lights. With the all the different Micra imports going round with a retro exterior I could quite easily visualise a scaled down version of the Bentayga as a Micra import. For example look at the Nissan Mitsuoka. That's based on the Jaguar S type, and its a Micra underneath the skin. Question is which would I have parked outside my house in the home counties. A Bentayga or a Range Rover? That Range Rover has so much class that I couldn't turn my back on the shire beauty of it.
How big is the boot?
Nice unbiased review
Beautiful scenery, somewhere in Spain?
That was some serious off roading
the chassis is straight from the q7! sweet
Where are you filming this? It's positively gorgeous!
i hate how many people hating on this car.. i mean come on it's bentley it's all about luxury. so doesn't really matter for those who can purchase it and "besides i think this SUV right here is obviously for rich people."
damn wish i had enough money to buy this... because i would buy a Range Rover instead. 😀
Why's this left hand drive car got GB plates?
I like the design of this car. They do test-drives in Spain or Portugal because the weather is shit in the UK (and rest of Northern Europe) except during the summer.
1:10 dem dancing exhaust pipes
Range Rover does it better and, I never thought I'd say this, compared to the Bentley you could even call it a bargain!
Blimey guys! the only good thing to say about this car is? It creates jobs for the UK. Never gonna own one, never gonna drive one, and probably never going to see one where I live. These reviews sure do put you in your place. The dream lives on. Its like not winning the lotto. Lets see what you could have won. Great reviews guys, livin the dream.
Why make the grill that big?
it will be good if they offer some big diesel too !! similar like in previous Q7 6.0 TDI with 500hp
Did they get the designers in from Kia's early days in for the exterior ?
+zGJungle lol looks like it
I first thought this thing was a huge waste of gas. However, i looked up the specs and it gets almost 30 mpg on the highway and almost 15 in the city. That is better than a GLS 63 or X5 M.
Driving the Bentayga is a rather lovely experience.
- a british dude
You know not Evie been a fan of Bentley but honestly this one as as a family car oh yes please
Ghastly.
+jjrdias you took the word right outta my mouth!
+jjrdias The thing is hardcore ugly.
Jason WD I think some concepts should remain as concepts, or at least tidied up a bit before launching to the public.
But I suspect this is for the WAGS and Middle East markets rather than you're average suburbanite. I'm sure the 'Fake Tan' crowd will love this!!
+utubecomment21 and drug dealers, footballers
+alan scott There is something I really don't understand about the design. To me it looks like a second year design project took the lines of a classic 1960s bentley and tried to wrap it round the proportions of a large SUV. Just look at the poise of an S2 Continental Coupe www.boldride.com/ride/1960/bentley-s2-continental-coupe#gallery/6 and tell me Bentley haven't thrown the baby out with the dishwater.
I was like i know that voice... OMG its Steve Sutcliffe
Hmm, maybe with a 5" lift, BF Goodrich All Terrain, steel bumpers and winch..., and a roof tent! Not to forget the outside spare wheel and fuel rack, LED bars...
I still go with the range rover sport autobiography
I think all in all its the best car in the world the range rover
Agree, but the RR needs better interiors though.
+Anson Thomas Really?
+Anson Thomas and reliability. I would buy one
+One Weird **** me too :) It has flaws, but for me it is a perfect SUV!
I heard carbon breakes are only better for extreme circumstances, like on a racetrack. Ordinary ones (steal) give better stopping power even when cold (for every day use). Don't know if it's true because it's not something I experienced myself.
Why not just wait for the next gen Cayenne at 1/3rd the price.
***** This fat Volkswagen..er..Bentley costs $270k in the US, 1/3rd of that is $90k, which is well in Cayenne territory. You don't necessarily need the pointless Turbo S version.
***** Ludicrous horsepower in these SUVs is how VW cons buyers into spending more than they have to for these grocery getters.
+Dontcallmeshirley Mercedes AMG GLS 63 with 585 HP costs 135k Euro but it's "only" a V8. Either one of these trucks are pointless but some people have no problem spending over 200k on an SUV.
1/3 the price and 1/3 of the car
it's beautiful, and simply pristine like the CGT by the lines of it most none car people won't have any clue that this SUV costs 3.5 times more than a BMW X5 but that's basically what Bentley is about, be more driver focused less of the "look at me I'm rich" image often portrayed by Rolls Royce for that reason I love it.
Im a fan of barebones, analogue "drivers cars". But I've fallen in love with the Bentayga, and that says something.
where is he driving this?
Well done
Pretty good review all around, but I don't understand how critics examine luxury vehicles and come to the conclusion that you should hear heaps of engine noise. I would have thought that if you buy any kind of Bentley or Rolls Royce that you'd expect next to no noise inside. That's the idea isn't it? A nice quiet and comfortable drive where you don't get anxious in traffic because you're sitting in heaven... so to speak.
Finally, They made an SUV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any hope for a larger SUV from Bentley?
I love the way it looks! I really admire the brash sense of ostentatiousness the Bentayga carries. Nothing screams "out of the way peasant!" Quite like a Bentley 👌🏻
ssangyong?
raised suspension is very welcome.
Lovely SUV but the monitor should be rejecting up and down from the back of the seats by remote control meaning that with the monitors on display will attract unwanted attention.
Brand new W12? No relation to the VR6+VR6 at all?
It's a rather lovely experience indeed! LOL!
Lets hope the build quality is better than the early continentals which suffered from fuel pipes blowing off and soft engine mounts which resulted in a knock when you kicked it down the engine mount bracket hit the chassis leg. The worst design ever was on the Bentley turbos when the seat belt buckle snapped off the seat when you needed it most and on some models with metal plate finish dashes the passenger airbag went off and you had a high speed metal plate flying towards you. Still not as bad on some Mercs early c classes the airbag loom was seperate to the main loom and they accidently put some the wrong way round so if the driver was the sole person in the car the passenger airbag would deploy leaving the driver to disappear out throu the windscreen
Utterly gorgeous car...
Is that Jony Ive's voice? :D
I drooled
i always have this feeling from a new car from VW's group, like this car for example, the infotainment screen and layout looks like a VW, the chassis probably from Audi Q-series, etc. but still it's a nice car over all and bentley probably will sell lots of it, cos who doesnt want a bigger, rougher bentley continental?
Them chrome rear cluster trims round the lights remind me of the 10yr old Merc E classes you see parked outside corner shops. Just looks hideous. Bet it's nice to drive though...
Footballers and rappers come hither and rejoice for the Bentayga is here XD I'd have an XC90. I do like the interior though :)
I want one
600hp that's sweet
My fev suv😎
I'll take 3, thanks
New shirt Steve?
saw one on the road a few days ago - UGGGGLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
that's a dream car
When did Sutcliff leave Autocar?
I got no comments for this car other than the revenue it will create hopefully will spur some great GT´s from the company - I´ll be awaiting the EXP 10 Speed 6 or whatever it´s final name will be.
Steve says, "God bleeding, blimey, guv'nah...luxury mate...luxurrrrrry!" Switched from gent to geeza 30 seconds into the review!
Can bently come up with more than one body design every 50 years? i mean a change would be nice
dam nice 600hp
but Steve, will it drift?
I think this is a miss! Definitely not a hit.
This is a big hit. It's going to sell crazy.
+Rottensteam its just because its bentleys first fucking SUV. no shit
+Kigoz4Life That's how it works.
i would say that it will be a hit. its the first Bently SUV. its ugly as hell and no reasonable person will buy it. the SUV is not marketed to the reasonable.
Yup but that doesn't hide the fact it is hideous, no one will tell you it looks good unless they sucking up.
Not necessarily a bad thing but it clearly has been designed for the Middle Eastern market. Off road capabilities will hugely appeal to them and also it's a fast ultimate luxury car which again is exactly what they want
Hey, That's Very Kind. violet believe 1!
Amazing car 🅱
Will R&R builds a SUV to match this thing?
haha challenging exterior design...definitely agree
the escolade and Range is murdering the this!!!
Just a matter of time before the 4.0 TT V8 gets dropped into this thing, maybe even with hybrid assistance to draw in a lower price point. The TT W12 gets awful mileage even in their coupes, in this vehicle it must drink a lot! Regardless, I think this is an awesome SUV. I think it looks sleek and exotic, and you say it won't sell, but just wait. This SUV will do very well I have a feeling!
Class, I LIKE it, but prefer my Continental!
it is good car I love it.
Im surprised at all the hate. I think it looks beautiful.
Apart from the look it is perfect
But that look
This is not just an expensive toy, it kind of does everything.... And 2.44 tonnes is little heavier than a lot of mainstream SUVs. The outgoing Disco is 2.7 tonnes.
Yes he did
Wish they'd stuck with the concept car. They could have made it unique. Now it just looks like a jacked up Continental and they haven't even bothered changing the dashboard for a more contemporary design.
"Ugly comes at no extra cost" Cooley
It will need all that off road capability to get to the country club and shopping mall >_>
Why is it so underpowered for a 6.0 12pot? The 2017 merc e63 is using a 4.0 v8 with identical hp and close torque. Is Mercedes doing something even better than before or is Bentley doing something wrong?
Mercedes engineers are far superior. VW aren't as good.
Maybe it isn't the best looking car in the world.
But it's a Bentley. That's all that matters. I want one!
Please give me one on these... so I can sell it and buy a beautiful car. What beautiful car? Any other car!
Hey, yo! You're So Kind. husky fold What's your opinion about it
i love the interior its looks even better than ranger rover and its look worth it to spend a lot of money on it
"The best rivals [are] Range Rover and Porsche." No mention of the unstoppable Toyota Land Cruiser, the legendary, savage, yet delightfully refined OG of off-roaders???
If I had the money for this, I would go straight past the Bentley and buy the G65 AMG.
