  • Why is getting outside with kids so hard?! | 1000 hours outside
1000 hours outside is the idea that we should get outside 1000 hours in one year.
    www.1000hoursoutside.com/
I'll be honest, as a single adult I didn't really enjoy going outside... but as a parent I know how important is for my kids (and me) to get outside, get some fresh air and move our bodies.
And honestly just break up the day 😅
I also don't think we'll hit 1,000 hours. But for me, it's the intention of getting outside and tracking to see how many we can get!
It's HARD to get two kids (and myself) dressed in 3 layers:
    1. Baselayer www.heyshayla.com/iksploryt
code HEYSHAYLA gives you a discount
    2. Fleece midlayer
    3. Waterproof outer layer
But once we get outside, I'm always SO glad we do.
JUst know behind every "We're outside!" photo is a story like this.
Instead of 3 hours / day 1000 hours housedie posted this on their Instagram to share how to do it if you live in cold weather or hot:
    / cmp_kckny5u
They also said that kids get somewhere between 25 and 40 hours a year in free play outside but 1200 hours on screens and by even trying we're helping to restore a balance to childhood that is desperately needed!!

I thought you were about to give surprising tips to make it easy, but to be honest this was even better😂😂 ♄thanks for confirming i am not the only one who struggles and yet here we are trying to do all this stuff😎
sometimes i think i’m crazy, sometimes i feel i’m failing at something.. but then i remember that seeking for perfection is the worst enemy of happiness! And often your videos help me remember.
    Thank you Shayla😘

I get everyone ready in stages! First 2 layers for mom, 1st two layers for baby, all layers for toddler, last layer for baby, last layer for mom. That usually helps everyone be fully ready closer to walking out the door. Plus try to involve toddler in getting baby ready so that they can get excited about getting ready and also have something to distract them from undressing themselves!
Absolutely loved that you pointed out that not all moms do ALL the things. Definitely a good reminder.

Love this! We are in Minnesota too and I have a 2.5 year old and 7 months old. A couple weeks ago we had only been outside for 10 minutes and my toddler had to poop. We came inside for her to only change her mind that no, she didn't have to go. That's the last time I tried to take both kids outside by myself. I now just wait for my husband to be around. We have lots of years ahead to have FUN being outside. We have babies and we live in Minnesota during the winter. We need to give ourselves some slack!

Oh man I so feel this. I told people we want to do 1000 hours as a new year's resolution, and so many people said "I don't bother to do resolutions because we don't ever complete them".... For us it's not about being perfect and getting 1000 hours, it's about trying and doing more than last year! Any extra hour is a perk. Also why is getting a toddler out in winter just the worst?! My daughter puts up so much resistance, I have to force her outside. But once we're out she loves it.

This made me laugh so much! I’m not alone obviously 😂
I’m Irish. And it rarely snows here. Husband is American and laughs at our excitement of a few snowflakes 😂
2 year old is dying to get outside to play in the snow. I dressed myself, started to dress my 8 month old and get her into the buggy. Toddler decides she’s waited long enough and heads out in her pjs and a pair of crocs and shovel in hand 🙈😂 so I chase her around the garden, drag her indoors screaming as she thinks she’s not allowed out, explaining “we’re going out!!!” Trying to get warm clothes on her. Baby crying as she’s tired of just sitting there. I’m sweating
but we did it. We GOT OUTSIDE!! 🎉

My toddler wouldn’t wait for me to get him ready one day and was really causing a fuss so I said “ok well you need your boots at least” and I put his boots on and let him go outside in his pjs and boots. Maybe a minute later he was too cold so I said “ok let’s get more clothes on you” and we went back and he helped me get his clothes on. He doesn’t fuss about getting dressed for outside anymore. We live in Canada so pretty cold and snowy.

Girl it takes all of my energy to dress my 1 year old to go outside, he complains through his entire suit up. I cannot imagine trying to get all 3 of you out the door every day. I love the commitment to going outside after a literal blizzard. My son is practicing walking, so we've been marching around our frozen yard. It hadn't occurred to me to set outside time goals, I'll do that. I can't wait for summer so that we can actually go out into nature when my son will appreciate it more. He loves being outside.

Phew! In an *ideal* World, I would attempt this challenge. I'm a SAHM, 36 weeks pregnant with #4, and my other kiddos are 4, 3, and 1. 😅 We are definitely indoors more than out, these days, but I'm hoping when Spring comes (and baby #4 is a couple months old) it would be a bit easier to get out more. Wishful thinking? Most likely. But I know my kids NEED to get out more! Just doing the best we can, a day at a time. đŸ™đŸŒ

This hits way too close to home 😂. I feel this in my overheated, overly sweaty, over dressed self trying to wrangle my 2.5 year old, 5 month old and dog out into the three feet of snow everyday. I finally got smart and fully dress the toddler, send him to the backyard to play while I get my non-mobile infant and myself ready. Then get the dog leashed up and finally heard my toddler from the backyard to the front to start the walk 😅. We HAVE to get outside no matter the weather or my crazy toddler and I will not survive the afternoon!

Being Norwegian and used to work in a kindergarten it’s so weird that people don’t go outside with their kids😆 I worked with 2-3 year olds and we would dress three kids and ourselves and go outside for at least two hours every day! They can put a lot of clothes on by them selves or with some assistance and then just jump in to a full snow suit and throw on a beanie and some gloves and you’re good to go!

Yes it is important to teach them to put on their own clothes. But she has a baby too ;). Beside going outside (and things like diaper changes, potty training, snack time, crafts, books like in daycare) moms have to feed a baby many times a day and put in the laundry, hang it, fold it, put it away, do the dishes, organize and clean the house, prepare dinner, run errands, do groceries, buy clothes, small children need morning naps, older children need to be brought to school/be homeschooled. So it's more of a challenge to go outside...

I do not live in snowy area. I have one kid. So this is much easier for me. PNW is rainy but doable. We have been getting about an hour a day or so. But honestly the other day I just let her walk around and led the way, she just stayed in the driveway and wanted to climb up and down the porch steps. I didn't quite get the walk I wanted but we were outside! LOL She is also one and just walking so everything is newly in reach. I do not think I will get 1000hrs outside. But I am counting my time out of the house. Grocery shopping (not time in the car- not very stimulating), swim lessons, parent group meet up indoors with other kids. We are out of the house... I am counting it! Like you say, it takes WORK. Honestly, I would probably count the time to get ready given the effort and skills involved.

You just preached to this momma heart. I can seriously relate on ALL layers (no pun intended) of your story. I had my children all bundled up for the cold snow day yesterday and we went outside to experience RAIN. Being the great mom I am, my children ran around in their snow clothes (definitely no snow anywhere to be seen) in the rain because I couldn't imagine starting over or putting one more layer on them.

We don’t have a car so we walk everywhere and I feel like in every month except winter, we get at least an hour a day outside, more on the weekends just by accident ha. So if anyone is trying this, I suggest you just cut down your driving. Get a wagon to take for grocery shopping trips, walk to the library, to the park, wherever. Just walk there! I think a lot of people when they get a car, they just find walking so much more of a chore but when you don’t have the option to drive, you just accept walking and it becomes more enjoyable. It does make some things more challenging, but if your goal is outside, just walk for your errands. I mean, if something is a 45 minutes walk away, it’s still a walk away, you can do it!

The concept is absolutely solid and I also want to go out and do more things with my toddler this year, but I definitely feel a bit wary of anything like this that sets another extreme goal for parents to meet. Also, they're making money off of this challenge, so that makes me even more wary that they have an incentive to push people in the name of profit. I'd rather see a variety of goals for people to ease into it or adapt to their particular situation, and encourage people to get any movement and sunlight they can, rather than striving for a random target.

    • @Sprickles58
      @Sprickles58 Pƙed rokem

1000 is such a buzz number too, like if the challenge was 843 hours, it wouldn’t be so appealing. I also am just not someone who like these sensationalized “challenges”. I’m already juggling a lot here! I definitely would like to go outside more and if something like this helps people do that, then cool cool. But if it just adds pressure or judgment (on yourself or others) or stress, I’m not here for it.

Aside from the fact that I have 3 kids to lug around instead or two, you completely described like most of my days out😅. This was great! So great to know I’m not the only one. The other day I had to pick up my 6 year old and the plow hadn’t gone by so I had to walk which meant taking the sled and pulling both the 4 and 2 year old over the knee deep snow the 25 minutes to get there and then pulling all 3 kids in the sled back. It took just over and hour for the round trip and about 3 days to recover 😂. We all had so much fun though and only one of them peed themselves like 3 houses away from home on the way back, not too bad.

I love your point that no one is and should be doing it all! When the sidewalks aren’t mostly clear, I like clearing off snow from my backyard patio. I get out sand/beach toys for my toddlers to play in the snow. A ball for gross motor play. I clear off the swing set/slide. They love it! We’re warm enough that we don’t need to move around like crazy. I’ll play with them but when they get in the zone, I clear off a chair and sit and read or listen to an audiobook/podcast.
I also do both kids at once but it’s way easier once they are both walking. Both socks. Both layers. Both boots. Both coats. Both hats. Both mittens. And then they run around and chase each other while I get my coat and boots and hat on. If you have a small baby, be encouraged that it is a season of life! 😊

You are fully my inspiration. You introduced this concept to me and I’ve committed to doing it. Oh and I have a full time job.
When my daughter was born last winter i goaled myself for 30 minutes outside every day. I was good till a perfect storm of work travel, illness, and the daylight saving time adjustment made evening darker sooner knocked me off my game. Getting back on the outside band wagon with this challenge. So far at 19 hours and trying to get to 50 by the end of the month. I don’t have the Minnesota cold and snow to deal with but I do have the constant gray drizzle dampness of the PNW. Biggest learning this far, adjust what outside time means to me. Baby had a high fever over the weekend so our only outside time was sitting in the front porch nursing but it counts. Some warm tea and a good down blanket over both of us and we stay cozy. I am counting on a few camping trips this summer being outside 24 hours a day for a couple weekends to help rack up the hours.

    Very relatable Story.
I usually get my 1st and 2nd layer done plus scarf and hat, then i check that my 2 3/4 year old is actually done going potty 😅, then i get him and my 1 year old dressed fully alternately , who ever is closer gets the next thing. They occationally bring their clothes. The older one is allowed to go outside alone, while I finish , the other one then too, while i get my boots on. (What really helps is that they are in our fenced-in yard, so nothing can happen. ) Sometimes i actually get us all dressed inside. đŸ’Ș
Things that help: have everything right there ready to go,
    Our entryway is pretty cold,
My Kids usually want to go outside
My older one likes his trainer bike and uses it whenever possible. The little one likes to walk sometimes.

This was hilarious and so relatable, loved your point about not being able to do it all, that’s so good! Also loved the fb marketplace tangent 😆 Last year when I was pregnant I listened to your podcast with that author about taking kids outside in winter. Now I have a 8 month old and happy to say most days as long as it’s -15 Celsius (5 Fahrenheit) or warmer I take her for a walk in the carrier and she naps and if it’s closer to -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit) we just do a 20min walk around the neighbourhood in the stroller. On those days we spend more time taking the layers on and off than we do outside but so worth it for my mental health. And on the even colder days we just go to the pool haha. Can’t imagine doing it with 2 little ones though, good on ya.

This sound crazily exhausting, but maybe it does get more exhausting with an older child. I go outside with my 1 1/2 old son several times a day and I need 5 min to get me and him ready. He has already 2 layers on as his normal inside clothing. When I want to go outside I put on his pullover and his crazy warm overall, but dont zip it up yet. I put him into stroller (yes, we park our stroller inside. makes everything easier), than I put on his shoes and his scarf. Than I dress myself with a second layer, a scarf, shoes and a winter jacket. Than I pull up his zipper and leave the door. Our hats I put on as soon as we are outside, because this is really what makes you sweat - a hat inside. And I zip up his footsack that he has in his stroller, so he is really nice and warm. If it is really cold and we go for a long walk I can put on some glooves for me and him, which I have in my bag..... maybe this is a nice tip for you: dress the last things outside because your kids will want to put them on because it is cold 🙂

I was always really good about getting the kids outside no matter the weather... until the third came. Oh my goodness. Even if I still get us out with baby strapped to me, 5 second after we get outside, the 2 year old pees her pants or the 4 year old throws a fit and it's the END OF THE WORLD and the baby wakes up and then everyone is screaming and crying...and we've been out for 5 mins... for 30 mins of prep time. UHG. Trying to not give up on it. We're in the Northeast.

Are you new to AZ? Yes it is hard, but you get used to it. Splash pads, the water park, and water table and sprinkler outside are great for the kids. We probably only do an hour or two max a day in the summer though. They went outside after breakfast every day last summer.

Yesterday I took my 4 month old out to the backyard where my husband was playing fetch with our dog. He was so calm. Then my husband went inside to get back to work, and I took me and the baby back inside as well. Suddenly back to fussy britches, didn’t want to do anything. I took him back outside, instantly peaceful. 😅 So I think it’s time to break out the pack n play.
Also, the account following wanting to do it all thing - before I had the baby I was really into the gym. I had been eating well (though I got a little lax while pregnant 😏), and now post-pregnancy, I’ve been having a hard time getting back into the gym (finding the time with a baby who has to be held for naps) and eating right (because habits fell off). And I follow two fitness accounts who ALSO just had babies pretty close to mine and they’re back into it again. Anytime I start to compare myself to them, I stop and remind myself that their literal job is to do fitness and eating healthy meals. They also have more years honing that discipline than me. And for me it was/is a hobby, not a career. So what I’m trying to say is, if you ever feel like you’re “failing” while comparing to an influencer who is perfectly doing anything you’re also trying to do, remember: they’ve probably been doing it longer, and their literal career is that thing. They probably have some kind of help in place so they can do those things “perfectly” whereas the average person doesn’t. That kinda puts it back into perspective for me. 😊

This is so so relatable Shayla! I’ve been watching you through all your mom content. I’m expecting first baby soon and I keep wondering if I’m just planning to do all these things just because “I like the idea of it” and worry I won’t be able to actually do them (referring to EC, CD, Montessori, RIE, BLW, etc)

      @bethw3573 Pƙed rokem +1

Only have one kid (a one year old) but also a small aggressive dog that i cant leave at home because I need to walk her too. And everyday I am like „I need fresh air but its such a hassle to get outside“.
Here too its rainy and cold and sometimes snowy in winter and I have to manage to go thru 5 heavy doors with stroller and dog before I am even out of the building. Then I am in the city/town and need to walk to a place where there is grass and a nice path to go for a walk.
Besides that my dog wants to attack every dog we see, my toddler wants to get out but not walk, no, to be held
so I am distracting him with toys and snacks for the 30min walk until I rush home because I can‘t carry him for long anymore and push the stroller while trying to stop my dog from attacking other dogs or steal kids food
. Its a lot
