Why Newt Scamander Was on the Marauder's Map (Easter Egg) - Harry Potter Theory

  • Hey guys,
    Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In this video, we’re going to be discussing the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Marauders and Newt Scamander. Now, we know Newt Scamander as the loveable main character of the new Fantastic Beasts films. Newt is a famed magizoologist and the AUTHOR of Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them- a book outlining the study of magical creatures.
    Newt himself once described his profession as follows:
    "I have visited lairs, burrows and nests across five continents, observed the curious habits of magical beasts in a hundred countries, witnessed their powers, gained their trust and, on occasion, beaten them off with my travelling kettle."
    We get to know Newt quite well in the new Fantastic Beasts films, and there are many films still on the way. However, one thing that I always found interesting was that Newt Scamander appeared on the marauders map in the Prisoner of Azkaban - and this was WAY before we saw him on screen in Fantastic Beasts. So, what was Newt doing on the map? After all, Newt was expelled from Hogwarts LONG before Harry was even born- he attended the school from 1908 to 1913!
    The Marauder’s Map is described as follows:
    "The magic used in the map's creation is advanced and impressive; it includes the Homonculous Charm, enabling the possessor of the map to track the movements of every person in the castle, and it was also enchanted to forever repel (as insultingly as possible) the curiosity of their nemesis, Severus Snape."
    With all of that in mind I want to explore a couple of popular fan theories for why it is that Newt was actually on the map. And I’ll give you my thoughts on both of them after I’ve briefly introduced them.
    Theory #1 is that Newt was visiting Dumbledore. Newt and Dumbledore were very close friends later in life, and Dumbledore even once taught Newt. At the time that Newt was expelled from Hogwarts, Dumbledore was Newt’s professor, and tried vehemently to stop him from being expelled. They had quite a deep friendship, so it makes sense that Newt would go to visit an old friend. His book was even part of the Hogwarts curriculum.
    Theory #2 is that Newt was on the Hogwarts grounds to help save Buckbeak. One of the key events of the Prisoner of Azkaban was the execution of Buckbeak the hippogriff. It’s completely reasonable to expect that Newt would take a special interest in Buckbeak. Newt is a lover of all animals, and Buckbeak's unfair sentence to death would draw his attention. Additionally, Newt’s mother was a breeder of Hippogriff’s, so it would make perfect sense that he would be interested in this situation. Newt devoted his life to magical creatures, so it only makes sense that he would show up to try and stop the execution if possible.
    My own third theory was that Newt was at Hogwarts to visit his grandson, Rolf Scamander. Rolf was just a year younger than Harry, and attended Hogwarts at the same time as the trio. In adulthood, Rolf would actually go on to MARRY Luna Lovegood.
    But, the main problem with all of these theories is that they assume that Newt was still alive. Some sources state that Newt only lived until the year 1991 or 1992. And hough he lived a Hearty and full life- this would mean that he was already dead by the time that Harry got his hands on the marauders map.
    IF Newt was in fact dead, then my only explanation for him showing up on the map was that he turned in to a ghost. In the films, there are several instances in which ghosts show up on the MAP, so it would make perfect sense. Those who decide to return to the mortal world as a ghost, do so because they have ‘unfinished business’- this prevents them from moving on to the next dimension. In newt’s case, if he became a ghost upon death, I would expect that it was because he had unfinished business of some sort- perhaps still searching for more creatures, or in the middle of researching a particular creature. He was so devoted to his work, that I can really see him lingering around to see it through.
    If that isn’t the case, then it must have really just been a little easter egg that gave us a sense of what was to come in the Fantastic Beasts films.
    And that’s it for this video What are your theories for WHY Newt Scamander showed up on the Marauders map in the prisoner of azkaban? Let us know down in the comment section below.

      That's what I thought. He and Tina live comfortably in retirement with a few beloved pets. What happened to the huge menagerie, I don't know. But keep in mind that wizards live a lot longer than Muggles, the exception being people like Nicholas Flamel. Besides, the most recent edition of Newt's classic book on Fantastic Beasts has a wonderful new Introduction where he reveals that our charming friend, Rita Skeeter (obviously younger than Newt at the time of writing) wrote one of her many nasty tabloid books on how Newt "ways a 'love rat' who broke Seraphina Piquery's heart" in 1926 before fleeing back to London. It doesn't say when she published it, but New t wasn't very pleased about it. As he wrote it in our own time, though, because Newt himself was asked not to reveal the things that happened over the following years, as this information is still classified. A clever way not to give away the plotlines of the next three movies until after they've been made. So Newt isn't a ghost and he and Tina are still alive. We don't know how many children they had, but we do know they had a grandson who married Luna Lovegood, and they had two children of their own. The Scamanders, by the way, are purebloods, like the Weasleys - until, of course, Ron married Hermione.

    Another reason why Newt could have been is visiting the Chamber of Secrets studying the dead basilisk. Maybe he was there more than once. I think Dumbledore would have allowed him to do that, as studying a living basilisk in the wild would be next to impossible given how super dangerous the creature is. Even for someone like Newt. Although maybe Newt might even know some tricks to handle a basilisk.

    • @fisty539

      @@fisty539 Someone would have had to close the chamber after The events of the second book. Most likely this would’ve been Dumbledore, it would be safe to guess at that point Dumbledore would have the capability to open the chamber at that point. He could’ve opened it so Newt could go down to the basilisk.
      No one said Newt would want to or did kill the basilisk. Zeno clearly said he was studying the one that was already dead (killed by Harry).
      So I’m not sure what point you were trying to make because your response is that of someone who didn’t even read what they were replying to.

    • @fisty539
      @fisty539 Před 2 lety

      @@Matt-mj1xh Yeah they would've had to close the chamber like in the past. I assume that Dumbledore/and/or a group of aurors probably just sealed it like after Tom Riddle opened it. Dumbledore was the transfiguration prof at that time so it seems unlikely to be him, especially when you consider the fact that the chamber was left open for any parselmouth to open.
      I don't know why you think he would be able to get past safeguards to open/change the chamber Salazar Slytherin had kept going for thousands of years. If Dumbledore could open it, why did he not go investigate and/or kill the basilisk when Myrtle died?
      Here's one option; The only way of getting ancient magic passed from one to another without crossing the interdict of merlin is by concealing a bunch of ancient magic info inside a being that can talk to you. Dumbledore may have known this would be Harry. I'm not sure.
      I am also unsure of the point you are making, Dumbledore could not open the chamber as he was not a parselmouth, I was considering all possible angles and pointing out some well known facts, he could not open it (none could except a parselmouth) and he wouldn't want to kill it (I 'was talking about before Harry killed it).
      If Dumbledore could open the chamber (likely not), could have persuaded Newt to figure some stuff out about it, left it to possibly kill/manipulate his students then....that changes my perspective of him being a careful adult figure.
      tldr;
      1: Dumbledore can't open the chamber but aurors and/or him can seal it, never open.
      Ancient magic can be passed down without invoking the interdict of merlin, DD might have thought of that while allowing the thousand year old giant snake to live where children do.
      2: Your response is not of someone replying to someone who kinda knows what their talking about, recognises it and poses ideas for a debate/conversation.
      3: Your logic is downright flawed, but you don't want to know that. You have no ideas of your own to contribute that can't be refuted by a single sentence. No original thinking. You offer no ideas/concepts that cant be passed by in less then 10 milliseconds of actual thought.

    • @Matt-mj1xh
      @Matt-mj1xh Před 2 lety +5

      @@fisty539 For starters Dumbledore did not know where the entrance was if he did the second book wouldn’t have happened. The first time the chamber opened they did not catch the person who opened it. Tom would’ve resealed hence why it was still accessible when Harry is in school.
      Knowing where the entrance is and being able to get all the way to the chamber likely would give Dumbledore the knowledge he needs to alter any magic previously done on the chamber. A big thing your don’t seem to understand is previously there were people who knew where the entrance was. So to answer your question he didn’t investigate when Myrtle died because he didn’t know where to investigate.
      After the second book if (and it is a big if ,but honestly who else would do it) Dumbledore sealed the chamber I’m sure he could undo whatever he did to seal it. I don’t think it’s far fetched to think Dumbledore could alter the magic of the chamber once it was finally found. He was able to undo some of the security charms on Hogwarts grounds in the 6th book when him and Harry fly back to the astronomy tower.
      I find it funny you consider yourself someone who knows what they are talking about when most of you reply ignores the fact that no one knew where the chamber was until the second book. But maybe next time instead of trying to flex your big Brian and act superior and all knowing you’ll try to take more than 10 milliseconds to comprehend what you are reading (doubtful).
      I think this is where it ends. You’re insufferable and I have no desire to continue any form of conversation with you. Hopefully you take this as a lesson to humble yourself and conduct yourself better but I doubt it you’ll probably do the same thing again when you inevitably reply.

    • @fisty539
      @fisty539 Před 2 lety

      @@Matt-mj1xh @matt Agreed this is probably where it ends. But how do you know Dumbledore did not know where the chamber was? He couldn't get in anyway and a literal 5 min chat with myrtle revealed it to 3x 2nd years.He likely knew it was Tom due to crazy amount of work he did into the relations memories and his past. Also a great way of confirming that Harry is a parseltounge, seeing Harry through the cloak at Hagrid's then telling him how to defeat the basilisk. Maybe that was a coincidence or maybe it was dumbledore steering Harry through his fate, the phoenix can teleport even in and out of azkaban, why not take dumbledore along with if not to continually test harry.
      You have an interesting counter-theory though but it might also make less sense. It's a shame to shutdown the debate due to emotions, as I meant you no real harm. I will still take this as a lesson from another person though and I may have been well out of order, so yeah sorry about that. I guess I'm just trying to figure out the whole picture and why people think what they think/believe what they believe. Your theory holds water as they probably couldn't get basilisk fangs without the chamber being behind the new wards, although no-one tried to get in inbetween so there's no real data there (still makes it more probable).
      I didn't really say what I was saying was gospel, just some questions where I saw no answers. I'll make it a point to be slightly kinder in my approach. Goodbye and good day/night etc

      3. Age and not exactly beeing an auror may have made him feel he would be more in the way than of any help and also most of the parents of the students dont fight, if I am not mistaken...

      Correct deduction! He's not in the series at all and we hope JK doesn't bring up some bogus connection to bring his story.
      And as per fantastic beast series, if he was so loved by Dumbledore why hasn't he been mentioned even once by Dumbledore to Harry? No references by people, no excerpts just few adhoc tit bits about him about his love for creatures and fantastic beasts. It's surely not a good idea for JK to bring up elements from past and connect to Present when you've already done PhD in a series and fans have devoured its soul itself.
      Yes.. If she only wrote at final point in Deathly hallows book that Harry placed the Elder wand not in Dumbledore's grave but Newt's. Theory: there would have been a hearing to decide Buckbeak's fate - I think Dumbledore or Hagrid mentioned once. Newt might have been employed by either Dumbledore or the Ministry as Buckbeak's defence which would also provide him with an excellent opportunity to catch up in Hogwarts with his old mate Dumbledore and possibl his own grandson.
    TLDR: por ques no los dos?

    Regarding his expulsion, I think rescinding that decision would've been one of the first acts of Dumbledore as head master.
    Not even solely because he was his teacher and friend, but because they really wouldn't want another school poaching Newt's genius.

    In the 2017 edition of his book, he made some editions to said book about the rumor that Dumbledore told him to be a spy. In fact, in this edition, he adds what he's doing in his later life: at age 116, him and Tina were living in Dorset.

    I did not notice much detail on the map when I watched the movie, but your screen capture at 1:45 clearly shows it, so I accept it. Since the animated scroll bearing his name appears larger than other such labels on the map for people, I wonder if perhaps this is actually a landmark label pointing out a statue or portrait of Newt that is on display in the school. To be sure, I tend to like the "he was alive and visiting" theory better, as I find it more believable. But if Scamander is indeed deceased by the time this movie takes place, this feels like a possibly plausible alternative that I have not seen elsewhere in the comments yet.

    If you consider that the "fantastic beasts and where to find them" book to be canon (I'm talking about the textbook that is included in the Hogwarts library set, not the movie screenplay), then he was definitely still alive in 1993, because he signed the foreword of the book and mentions that he was aware his book was released for Muggles to read, but only as "pure fiction and all good fun" in 2001. So I believe one of the 1st two explanations to be more plausible.
    Also, I don't believe Newt would have stayed on as a ghost. As Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington explains, in the Potterverse, ghosts are wizards who decided not to go on to the other side, they're not just prevented to do so because they have unfinished business. If it were the case, Sirius would have come back as a ghost, because protecting his godson from impending death certainly qualifies as unfinished business. I believe that Newt, having such a connection with beasts and the natural world, would have accepted death as the next step of his existence and simply moved on.
    My own hypothesis is that Dumbledore informed him that Harry had killed a basilisk that was hiding in the school for centuries, and Newt decided to show up and check it out for himself, eager to understand how he could have missed a giant snake living in the school he attended for several years, and probably try to help with Bucky in the process. It wouldn't be out of character for him, nor for Dumbledore who is very protective of Hagrid

    • @CorraThaxton
      @CorraThaxton Před 3 lety

      Slight issue with the idea of Sirius choosing not to go on: his death was caused by Bellatrix's curse (killing curse in the film, unknown in the books) pushing him into the Veil. With what little is known of the Veil, it likely wouldn't have given him a choice to stay around as a ghost.

    Well Dumblodore died at the age of 116, considering that Newt was a student when Dumblodore was a teacher of defence against the dark arts at that time, i suspect that Newt when he appeared on the map was between his 70s-90s.
    1 more reason is that we never seen Buck after the 3rd movie so the only logical explanation is that Buck end up in Newt's lugguage.

  • @atharvajoshi3644
    @atharvajoshi3644 Před 3 lety +4

    There is also a theory which says that Newt is an Animagus who could transform into a toad and in the HP series, he was actually Trevor(Neville's toad). Dumbledore hired him to keep a watch on Neville as he knew that Voldemort would return and Neville(being the other candidate of the prophecy) would be on Voldemort's hit list

    the prisoner and specifically the incident with Buckbeak specifically happens to involve a time turner (that was part of the reason they used it), and the one to tell them to do so was Dumby. He was friendly with Newt. Maybe newt used a turner as well, either to help them secretly or to supervise personally

    The potential of the Harry Potter universe is endless. I would love to see a story developed that involves other countries, like Romania, Bulgaria, the Balkans in general, since the author involved those places on numerous occasions, meaning that area of the world, in that universe, is a melting pot for the magical society.

    It is likely that he is on the map because he was meeting a teacher or Dumbledore at Hogwarts at that time. Also, he might be at Hogwarts to defend Buckbeak under Dumbledore or Hagrid's request.

  • @Thoralmir

    Given that Hagrid became Care of Magical Creatures teacher that year, and given the trouble with Buckbeak, it's possible that Newt was sent by the Ministry to "assess" Hagrid's competency, possibly on Dumbledore's suggestion.

    i am 100% sure that Newt saved Buckbeak, and also helped Harry as a request by dumbledore during the tri wizard tournaments about the Dragons. Newt was deffinately helping out during all these times, and i am pretty sure that Newt was the one who asked Hagrid to take care of the young dragon before in the 2nd movie as well! hell, he probably helped Hagrid with the huge spider as well. wouldnt surprise me in the least tbh.
