I have family on Block Island. I hate visiting them in summer. Do you remember the scene in the movie "Jaws" where an absolutely huge, out of control crowd is disembarking the ferry to go out and hunt the killer shark? That's what it's like in the summer. Loud, obnoxious, drunk, out of control tourists heading to the island only to become obliterated by alcohol. Insane.
we really don't drink that much here. I say that as a person who is a working class alchy. At my factory, it's like a three to one stoner vs alchy ratio.
@@elsenorgatito block island is a completely different animal compared to the mainland. When he says stupefyingly drunk he isn’t wrong. Especially at ballards
Sounds like both bars in off season; possibly Ballard's or the Oar on season. Listen, even when I lived there, 10 years later in 1999, there was no appropriate venue for a COMEDIAN. Nope. Off or On season. It's either very, very rich people being lazy and indulging, or very drunk, party, clubbing, beach goers. There are a few "athletic" types that come to explore, but they don't club at aaaallllllll, and a lot of day beach goers that range from drunk party people, to lay in the sun all day and eat yummy beach food people - who aren't staying late enough to go to a club or bar. But yeah as far as I know there is still no appropriate venue for a comedian unless someone hired you for a private event group. In the winter? On a crappy day? They all start drinking at 3 when the bar opens. Lined up outside before the door opens. Islanders? YEAR ROUNDERS (of which there was only 800)? A very large percentage of them are alcoholics. Not all, just.....a lot. Drunk driving to go home isn't an arrestable offense in the winter. Just crawl your ass home, or the cop will follow you until you are in your drive. Winter life out there is a strange event indeed, and the lore stands that if you year round on the island for more than 6 years? You will never move back to the mainland again. Adjusting to mainland life after the island is just really hard. I was there for 3 and a half. The island still calls to me. She is often attached to other places I've lived in my dreams. It was a very magical place to have lived.
Haha, he must have been at Ballard's I'm guessing? It's right off the ferry, and is Block Island's only beachfront bar. It's like Martha's Vineyard, but when the grubby mainlanders get out there, they flock to Ballard's, and behave exactly like he described.
Wouldn’t that show you that it’s probably NOT indicative of how the people usually are? If on this tiny island where nothing happens, where joe Rogan comes to town it’s a big event, and people go out and start celebrating and drinking for their big night/only out and they can’t really handle the drinking or know how much they can take.
I wonder what time of year Joe Rogan was performing there, Seems really weird that he'd be performing outside of the Summer season as only 1,000 people live on the Island year round, and there's only one bar open, but maybe he was.. Block Island is a tourist haven, so if he was there during the Summer, it's all about tourism, which means it would have just been a huge mishmosh of tourists from New England beautiful
Well, Joe not everyone drinks while on BI. I went there with my BF at the time, his college roommate got married there we stayed at the Spring House hotel I believe in October it was absolutely beautiful weather such a great X! We did the fairy ride. it wasn't overly populated with alot of tourist however, it wasn't the mere one thousand locals. We went in 1993 just a few years after Joe. I will say my boyfriend John was from a town in Connecticut in which everyone drank! His mother was meeting for the first time on this trip and she was told I didn't drink...Well, lets say she was not a fan! I had to have somerhing wrong with me. In her rational she simply didnt trust a person who was not a drinker! UM, WEIRD! NEWAYS,,, It's a lot of rich artsy/author types. Also, yuppies that gothere for a GX! It's a touristy situation. I'm very shocked they paid a comedian for the entertainment? Imo, more along the lines of Van Morrison/Bruce Springsteen covering duo musicians JS!
Going to a bar sober is actually entertaining, it’s like watching kids argue in a sandbox
It wasn't the crowd, Joe - you bombed, brother.
The whole reason you go to block island is to be drunk
Says the person who has never seen anything outside of the ferry and Ballard's.
@@JoshDonecuz that's all there is
That's why I call it Blockout Island
He should film his next special there.
This is a great idea

The flotsam and jetsam of the Block Island ferry.....welcome to Vo Dislun.
This has Ballard's written all over it. BIRI is a beautiful place - Ballard's is a 24/7 shitshow.
Now they call it Glock Island. Sad.
It’s different now

I think it may have gotten worse
It’s still the same Joe !
Block island is literally where you go to get drunk
You've clearly never seen anything there outside of Ballard's.
