My father was serving aboard the USS Atherton, DE169, when it was involved in the sinking of U853. I heard the story of this battle many times as a young boy, and was always excited to get a first hand account of it. I was also very proud of my father, so much so, that when I was old enough, I enlisted in the Navy, and also served aboard a DE, USS John Willis, DE1027. I know my father was also very proud of me. If my father were alive today, I can tell you one thing for sure. He would have been greatly disturbed, to say the least, about this person taking the ring of the German sailor. This is an inexcusable act, and that ring should certainly be returned to the appropriate agency to be returned to the family. It never should have been taken in the first place, but now this is the only alternative, unless this unbelievably selfish person would dive on the wreck, and put it back where it belongs. That would be the right thing to do.

Love the clarity of your video and the volume of music was just right. Really good job, just wish it were a longer video. I know time down there at those depths is limited. Thanks for sharing this.

Beautiful dive! It takes Big ones to make a dive like that.

This is a German war grave. The men on this boat died in battle as heroes. Please do not steal or disturb this site. Thank you.

I’d assume that’s a grave yard? Must be spooky diving into it

I dove on this in 1988 or 89 with my instructor on my 1st open water dive. It has seriously deteriorated since then.

Do you have a relative known as John Ormes . Maybe , a retired IBEW electrician ? .

I like the video, but I want to point out that this is a WAR GRAVE (I checked- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_U-853 ) , and you aren't supposed to penetrate them, even they were Nazi assholes. They are still heroes who died serving their country (in THEIR country). I'm just saying.......

In 1999, I dove the 853 with a group from Long Island.....What a trip !!!!....I also noticed the shiny Periscope.....While inside the wreck, I really kicked up a LOT of silt, & rust !!!....I think those Sailors were sleeping on the torpedoes back in the day....Crazy !!!......While searching the ribbed area of the bow, I found a plumbing ferole .... It was so blacked out, I couldn't see it, but I felt it....Not thinking any thing of it....It dawned on me....it could be a RING.....SO....I put it in my glove....After getting back on the dive boat "Jean Marie".....I inspected my find.....It WAS a ring !!!.....Inscribed with the name "RUUIP".....Several weeks after the trip, I was tormented by some German Extremists wanting THAT ring !!! Many 2:00 am phone calls......I will never give it up !!!

Although they were the enemy… It is the final resting place of those souls, nonetheless… I’m figuring that the 2 A.M. phone calls may have come from abroad… Perhaps Germany, since local German time is estimated between 7 and 9 A.M

I’m also superstitious about final resting places… I feel that whoever disturbs such locations will forever be tormented

What you did sir, was tantamount to grave robbing; would you be okay with grave robbers digging up your grandparents and removing any valuables, because it’s the same thing. You need to do the right thing and give that ring to a German consulate or embassy so that it can hopefully be returned to the deceased submariner’s next of kin.

That's morally wrong. Give it to a museum or send it to the German Government. You robbed a grave.
