    Just a note on the fires. I too live in Phetchabun in the Pa Sak River valley north of the city, mountains to the East and West. The burning is locals clearing the under-bush so they can do their hunter-gatherer thing. Apparently it helps with the wild mushrooms and other jungle stuff. I can see burning up in Khao Kho this evening. Did you see anything similar when you were there recently?

    @sahacking Před 6 měsíci +17

    You're wrong about the fires on the mountains. It definitely IS people burning the brush away. We have the same thing here in Phetchabun every burning season, and you'll see the same every year now that you've moved into your house close to the mountains. I'm a distance runner, and I run up in the hills and trails above Thaphon Dam in Phetchabun. The rugged dirt roads and trails make it impossible for vehicles to get up there unless they're tractors, dirt bikes, or jacked-up 4-wheels. Even so, there are shacks all up in those hills. People live in those shacks, planting crops and cutting down trees for illegal wood sales. When I first saw those long lines of fires on the mountains during burning season, I thought the same as you--maybe a natural fire. But those fires are deliberately set this time of year. The authorities won't do anything about it, just as they don't do anything but talk about the horrendous air pollution every year from mid-January through March. Fortunately, Southeast Asia has a long rainy season, or you'd see this burning and suffer from the pollution year-round.

      Correct. It's not natural. I live up the road and was looking at the mountain in flames last couple of nights. It was exactly the same last year. My partner told me people light these fires to clean the vegetation so they can find animals to eat and would to cut

    • @sahacking
      @sahacking Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@LifeinThailand777Yes, they also clear brush away to force animals out so they can kill them. The reality is, most of Thailand lives in poverty. So many people--my wife included when she was a young girl--must forage for food, whether it be vegetables and greens, ant eggs, frogs, mud fish, "meng-da" (big water bugs that look like giant cockroaches), bamboo, etc. Fortunately for us "Farangs," Thailand has a relatively low crime rate. However, theft does occur, even in the villages where everyone knows everyone. Once when we were away, someone hopped over our wall, cut the lines to our sprinkler pump, and stole it. That's the only time something like that has happened, but it dispelled my naive notion that all Thai country people are relatively honest.
      Now, about your night prowler. He was almost surely looking for something to steal. How unnerving that must have been for you! My wife and I have a gun. Whatever you may think about guns, they do provide peace of mind. I was a DEA agent for 21 years, so as a law enforcement officer I was armed every day, and of course I had access to a gun at all times. America is much more violent than Thailand, and a lot of that has to do with Thailand being Buddhist. Still, I wanted a gun, so we got one. As a Farang, I can't buy a gun, but my Thai wife can. We also had some local political connections to help facilitate the acquisition and licensing. We have neighbors much closer to us than you do, but we're still quite rural. I doubt that we'll ever need to use or even threaten someone with the gun, but it is on my bedside table every night, and back in a safe every day. If we were living where you are, I'd definitely be worried without a gun, but that's me and my cynical, suspicious, wary law enforcement background.

    Intruders: You might want to consider a 2m-high concrete block security fence a little ways out (5-10m) from your current low-level decorative garden wall. My wall cost about 130K฿ to build (labor and materials) and it’s about the length of what yours might be. That wall, with a high & heavy slider gate (lockable), and three dogs are a pretty secure arrangement. Plus, I have real and fake security cameras quite easily visible to a would-be intruder. Both intruders and dogs know that anyone setting foot inside THAT perimeter will pay a tough price.
    This perimeter wall can be nicely painted and considerably beautified with shrubs and landscaping. Fairly cheap to do in our area.

  • @jdavies212msu

    Just to help put your mind at ease, there is a barbed wire perimeter fence at the base of that mountain, usually with a nearby dirt access road. This perimeter is patrolled pretty regularly by the national park rangers. I’ve run into them occasionally on my mountain bike forays into the area. For these reasons (patrols and perimeter roads), the fires rarely stray into the farmlands and woodlands at the mountain base. I’ve yet to see that happen.
    I think the fire starters know they’d be in big trouble if their fires started to regularly stray onto private lands. So, there’s kind of a “truce” or gentleman’s agreement between the foragers and the rangers that the fires stay on the mountain.
    It doesn’t help the air quality much, but at least your property is pretty safe from this man-made activity. (See other comment).
    Cheers,
    John

    Local authority is to be informed and called every time you see fire. I do it just about every year. I live too close to the mountain in Kanchanaburi, that was my mother's choice and I moved to live with her now, she's 90. Starting summer every year we always have to look out for this crazy madness of thess guys looking for honey, wild things or whatever by burning bush, mostly bamboo, and the fire come downhill towards all the houses. Because it's close to town, the fire truck comes but not often enough. But what we do now is made the fire wall and plant a lot of pricky pear cactus around the foothill as much as possible. It helps to some extent! Also I am thinking about growing more banana around to kind of keeping fire not too close to my backyard. So far, my house wasn't burnt down just yet, too close many times! Good luck to you. My friend always remind me, be nice to the local government and your neighbors, it will pay off for you.

    You know, I bet the guy with the cows knows who the guy with the stick is. I’m not being flippant. Thai farmers live in villages for good reasons.
    Everyone knows everyone. Even that seriously understates the complexity of that knowing. There are hierarchies and histories and roles and behaviours and compromises etc that even Thai outsiders would struggle to understand. That all supports things that are good and things that are bad - at least to a westerner. To the locals it’s just “Mai pen rai”.
    It would seem you live outside that village support/burden structure and that’s fine if you understand the support you won’t get and the obligations you don’t need to meet. You’ll need to fill the gaps yourself as you see fit.
    Note, this is all true for the dogs too. The local dogs are raised in the village and know what’s what and who’s who. They know not to eat chickens and who is allowed near their house and who is a stranger in the village, who is top dog etc etc.

    We have a high fence around our compound and cameras everywhere, it sounds like we are paranoid but the fence is mainly for the pythons/cobras and the cameras are for the wife to watch her puppies while she is in the states. There has been petty theft around the village occasionally but probably far less than America. We do have a bad ass soi dog (my favorite dog that will get spoiled when I move to Thailand) that patrols the perimeter while 4 ferocious in looks only pitbulls live the life of luxury inside the fence. I worried about building a modern two story house like yours because I didn't want to attract to much attention, but the wife had it her way 555. Ben, a little bit of street advice……..never rush into trouble without first having a Quick Look to survey the area. Yes, it was 2am so it was dark so hard to see. Mate most people are never by themself so always believe there are two or more, always believe they have a weapon or two and if you are going to grab or fight go complete pittbull for a few seconds because that is all it takes. Probably you know this already so wish you well and all the best.

I've live in Sa Kaeo in the east bordering Cambodia . I have on average about 15 dogs ,feeding more than 20 every day , the stories I could tell . Weather in LOS is predictable ,but surprisingly it did rain today ,always hot but I love it .

    I'm from London ,Chiswick but living here is so beautiful ,stunning scenery .

You would be accountable if anything happened ,you farrang ,same as a road accident . But ,where do your muts sleep ? ,no way could anyone get into my gaff without me knowing ,the dog's barking would be deafening

    No chance a Thai would go check at 2am in the night without a proper weapon. Then even try to grab him without knowing if he had a knife or gun? That was pure luck nothing serious happened, a (farang-) life is not worth much here and you are most probably well know amongst the criminals in the area. If you didn't yet, it's time to think about security and protection of your wife and yourself.

      I'm pretty certain you can not shoot to kill if people are warned and won't leave your property. Many rural states in the US have this law and it's needed given how vast the land is. Same policy should be in place in rural Thailand too.

What happens next time when there are 3 of them? Please be very careful. I know and Im sorry this is extremely negative but its reality.

    • @LifeinThailand777
      @LifeinThailand777  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Nobody is starving where we live. They’re all farmers and everyone knows everyone else, including us. The guy who I grabbed in middle of the night had mental problems. He did the same thing to another farm house down the road, on the same night and was chased away. These horror stories do the rounds constantly but I’ve never heard of it actually happening to anyone. It’s always “it happened to someone who knew someone” etc.
      I appreciate the concern though 🙏
