  • Got hit by a winter storm and wanted to show how my RV Ambulance Camper is surviving the storm in comfort and warmth with the assistance of my Toyota Prius used as a efficient generator. I show my water system, refrigerator system, toilet system, heating system and power system and how I use them to provide a comfortable safe place to survive a winter storm.

    I love your use of the car as a backup generator. I have thought about a backup generator for my home but don’t want the expense, the noise, the probability that it won’t start when I need it most. I own a Ford Escape Hybrid and could be using it in combination with an Ego or Dewalt loose battery system simply charging the batteries with the car and swapping them out as they discharge.

What I’d like to know is how well climate control works in super hot weather like 105 degrees and humid on multi day trips. You inspired me to convert my Prius and I’ve been having a Boondocking blast! Thank you! Your electric set up was way over my head so I took a goal zero, it charges off the Prius and gives me all the plugs I need. If u have a minute to explain how I can run a van off of it? I’m thinking I might get one and use Prius as tow car now....

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  Před 5 lety +3

      I have wanted to get a setup for towing the Prius behind the ambulance but haven't looked into it. You could use the Prius as a generator for your van but have to keep in the ON state or it will deplete your 12v starting battery. You would also need to get an inverter and tie it into the 12v battery. The Goal Zero should work just fine and just keep charging like you are doing now. You would not be able to run a 12v wire from the Pruis to the van, the run would be too long and would get a low voltage at the other end. You could put a small inverter (200 watt) plugged into the Prius cigarette plug and run a 110v extension cord to the van to charge the Goal Zero in the van or just use the extension card to give you van power however you would need to leave the car in the ON state just in case. I don't know if that helps or not.

      @timdillen  Před 5 lety +2

      Good points. I forgot to mention in the video that I have a 1000 watt generator that I can hookup to the ambulance inverter to charge the 4 big ambulance batteries. The ambulance also comes with 300 amps (big alternator!) of battery charging via the alternator. There is a neat gauge that shows how quick it can charge at that rate. I will eventually do solar, there is room for at least 1 KW on the roof. Ambulances with 200,000 miles can be found for $5,000 to $9,000 and are a crazy good deal for what you get. Ebay is the best source I have found.

    I bought a large 2 story house 4 w/basement and attic. Paid $5000 cash put another $10,000 into it to furnish and fix up. I put single and double doors in to shut off rooms. I usually only heat a couple rooms in the winter sometimes just one. I have a Dyna glow heater in the area that I always heat. My pipes are well insulated and its easy to drain water from any room I don't currently want to heat. My first winter before fixing up the house I had a heater in a bathroom and slept in the bathroom closet. If I lost power I would charge my battery power pack with the car alternator and that would probably power me for a few days. Sometimes the only power draw in my house is from a phone and my internet router.

    Hey man, great setup for winter!
    I think you are wasting a lot of energy on converting 12VDC to 110VAC and then again to 12VDC. I think keeping it DC at least up to the MAV charger/inverter would be more efficient.

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes, definitely, the current setup is not the most efficient with the voltage conversions. Fortunately the Prius makes loads of power with just a bit of gas so I am enjoying the luxury. I am used to a solar setup where you are constantly worrying about power usage when you don't have sun. This is so much more fun. Thanks for your comments and for watching!

      Awesome! Your first big conversion will have some frustrations but it is so worth it learning what you are really are capable of accomplishing. You should be able to run about a 1,000 watt space heater off the Prius. I would definitely not push it to 1,500. The 1,000 watts will provide good heat but you will really have to spend some time and money on insulation. My understanding is spray foam is a great way to go but I have not tried it. You can also divide up the space so you can close off the space you are in and just heat that. Post some videos so everyone can follow along! I will subscribe.

      PSC Camper Conversions Hi! I finally got cardioverted successfully at the beginning of May and the heart has been behaving itself with the afib. Now recovering from congestive heart failure. Every day a bit better but I do think my health hinges quite a bit now on cardiac drugs. It’s been a year since I felt crappy (and neither doc or cardiologist took me seriously) and 7 months since first emerg visit. I have learned that if you are not dying immediately you fall into a triaged chasm. Not pretty. Soooo... my beloved “Bertie” sold in under 24 hrs to a young family from a town hundreds of miles away. The parents and the two young daughters are in love! Bertie will now live in our near north. It was heartbreaking to see her go.
      Now on the lookout for a RT but few and far between esp since there is no production anymore and 6 yr warranties are up in the air. See a lot of older high mileage older units - no thx. If I manage to snag a half decent one would you mind some questions on how to adapt it for “old broad status”. I swear these things are designed for healthy young ‘uns who can contort in every direction! My two boys constantly roll their eyes and tell me I’m a hoarder...lol...they are such minimalists thank gawd. Everything clean and orderly but volume is a thing..I even have a shipping container from Reno’s and flipping houses..bad me! How is your mom doing?

      @timdillen  Před 5 lety

      Glad to hear your health is improving! Also nice you see you are back on the hunt for your next RV. I am trying to be more minimalistic. So glad to have gotten rid of so much stuff. I'm ready to start filming but have been having so much fun playing with the motorized gas bike and electric skateboards. I am trying to practice my skateboard riding, have not done in decades. Didn't think it was a good idea but the longboard electric belt driven skateboards are quite stable as long as you keep it under 15 mph. 10 mph is so pedestrian now to me! The electric scooter and electric skateboard should fit nicely in the Prius and the gas bike on the back of the ambulance.

    @mishu3271 Před 5 lety +1

    Hey! 👋 how are you and your Mom doing? Have you given up on CZcams? You seemed so excited about reaching 10,000 subs.
    Next week I’ll undergo first cardiac procedure - way overdue as I have been failing. I’m keeping fingers crossed that it will be successful and start a recovery.
    I don’t look at travel notifications any more - too painful. I still watch my tubers because I love learning new things. My dad was a white collar worker so nvr passed on any blue collar skills - I still curse him lovingly for that!
    Did you hear that Roadtrek and Hymer went into insolvency? Startling news. I was hoping to buy a RT Zion SRT or an older low mileage RT 190 built on the Chevy 3500 chassis. They sell within hours here. - no time for inspections which rubs me the wrong way. Mom is doing OK. She tried a new medication but did not like the side effects so is returning to a previous one. I'm hoping to get back to videos in April. I have started a garden inside the MAV which has been a lot of fun, have about 50 plants going. Tomato, sunflower, cucumber, lettuce, hydroponic seed starter.
      I hope your cardiac procedure goes well and starts you on the road to recovery. I had not heard about Roadtrek and Hymer. I thought they were solid companies. I really like the Pleasureway models but could never afford a newer one. I don't see many old RT go up for sale here and they usually aren't very cheap.
      We have had so much rain here, a few mud slides, already have trees budding and flies. They say we will have a ton of bugs this year. Hope everything goes well for you and get to start traveling again.

    Just checking in on you. How is everything going? Just made flight arrangements for younger son to come from Calgary to help me prep and sell my beloved “Bertie” vintage trailer in late April. That will break my heart. Health continues to decline unfortunately..I am one of the unlucky ones where toxic drugs seem to do almost nothing. Just like my personality my heart is stubborn!

      PSC Camper Conversions So sorry to hear about your mom’s cancer situation. I am finding testing/diagnostics process painfully slow here. I hope your mother’s issue is expedited. I’m sure you are a great help to her. My boys have been champs during this difficult time. I don’t have to sell Bertie financially speaking but I may never be well enough to do the hitching/unhitching process again. She is in such good shape and so Instagram ready! Recently renting these vintage trailers per day is a growing business in Canada. Buyer would make money very quickly. Everybody has a soft spot for vintage trailers like Bertie. Ppl always want to see her. Winter will hit us harder this weekend with snow and freezing temps. Did you cancel your work stint?

Fell in love 😍. Have you ever seen one of these? I went to your guys website where you bought the mav but he doesn’t seem to have these older rvs. Craigslist not a big thing here in Ontario - we have Kijiji but it hasn’t been that good for a few years. Sounds like a neat setup. I have been researching plants which produce O2, remove CO2 and mold and chemicals. Bought several snake plants, pothos plant and a spider plant. Bought several grow lights and now have quite a garden growing. I bought an Awair air monitor which has really helped in diagnosing my air problems. Got a electrostatic air filter which took my 2.5 micron particles to zero but found out my CO2 levels were very high so added the plants and a little venting and fixed the problem. Chemical levels are good with just the small amount of venting. Been sleeping wonderfully ever since. Still waiting for test results for mom.

    Hello again. Is the Prius charger keeping the second 12v battery charged all the way? I’ve been reading about dc to dc chargers. They claim that a car alternator can’t provide enough amps to properly charge a second battery. I’m sure the hybrid charger is different but I am not an engineer. I’m interested in your experiment. Those dc to dc chargers are around $400.

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  Před 5 lety +1

      From what I understand, the Prius does not have an alternator but instead has a generator. I believe it has a dc to dc converter as part of its electronics. It does keep the 12 v battery fully charged whenever in the ON state, engine running or not. If the car is left OFF and there is a draw on the 12v battery that takes it down too low, the car will not turn back to ON as the 12v battery runs the computer for the whole car, found that out the hard way.

      Thanks for checking - she tried a new medication that did not help and has gone back to her old one. Will know in a month or so if it will keep the cancer from growing. Am hoping to take a trip to Orlando next month in the Prius and kick off some new videos. Have been experimenting with growing fruits and vegetables in the ambulance, experimenting with electric scooters and gas scooters for auxiliary transportation. Also have been building a gas powered bicycle that I have not finished but is very cool. You get all the advantages and freedom of going anywhere bikes are allowed plus have a small gas powered assist/drive engine to go up to around 25 miles per hour, very efficient and fun. The electric scooter can store in the Prius and the bike on the back of the ambulance (would be a bit bulky on the back of the Prius). How is your health coming?

      PSC Camper Conversions can’t wait to see this new transportation vids! Love electric scooters/bikes but I can’t even lift my walker out of my Santa Fe! Cardioversion didn’t work for longer than an hour first time. Cardiologist prescribed Uber toxic drug that I took 11 of while researching and promptly stopped (he doesn’t know that yet..) will do another cardioversion first week in May. I am feeling about 15% from ground zero in Jan/feb. I’ll take it but still extensive limitations on what I am able to do physically. Have to defer my trip to Calgary in May 😩. That’s the third deferral! $$$. Not travelling is killing me! I still look for a Roadtrek that I can use as primary car with benefits but they are very expensive here and govt adds 13% tax...yikes and no factory or warranty any more. I have a feeling docs are not telling me the truth about future health re: congestive heart failure which pisses me off. How can you plan for a future you may never have? I will quickly point out that if you want people to find your videos, you don't have to put a bunch of words relating to the video in the title (kinda feels like I'm shopping through a Chinese website). You can use the tags feature on CZcams and have much cleaner titles.
