Totally, and the secret trick to the saber swallowing is that it can cut through any metal but it won't harm organic material because the crystal has been realigned different. So the hero uses it to comedic effect. First with frustration and disappointment. But near the end he's disarming and slicing and dicing the armour off enemies causing them to run away naked and embarrassed.

A fantastic tale and a worthy addition to the critically acclaimed Star Wars EU canon. It was an emotional rollercoaster. I cheered when Boba Fett appeared (on the cover) and I made a frowny face when Dyin Gelato's family was probably dead and I was mightily impressed when the racism happened to let the audience know this is a deep story about complex issues.

I love how this feels like a 50/50 mix of the Mandalorian and Rebels.
    Rebels:
    - Space Aladin
    - is an orphan
    - learns part of his family might be alive
    - wants to know what happened to them
    - searches for them
    - gets taken in by female, green Twi'lek pilot
    - they travel though space, beeing hunted
    The Mandalorian:
    - main character called Din
    - is an orphan
    - has no force abilities
    - does get racist comments
    - Boba Fett appears
    - Mandalorian bounty hunter complains about high fuel prices
    - one character with simmular outfit gets mistaken for Din
    - Sudden jedi saving the main characters in a time where most jedi are dead
    - The sequel/ spinn-off features Hutt(s)
Now I want an episode of the Mandalorian with the premise that Bounty Hunters mistake Din for another Mandalorian or the other way around.

Also, marketing. Not only does he have the cool armor and ship, his toys were objectively among the coolest. They would, like, shoot little plastic missiles and had a jet pack and stuff. So, kids were really more remembering their own play sessions with him as a toy more than the 10 minutes of screen time he had in a movie that, pre VHS, they probably only saw a couple times years prior.

He’s only awesome because of the EU. Well, maybe awesome isn’t the right word, but interesting. Since we learn almost nothing about him in the movies (except that’s he’s supposedly an amazing bounty hunter), it was easy for people to create their own idea of him and run with it. Plus he was visually interesting, with cool armor, a jet pack, suit weaponry, etc. Made a great picture or action figure.

Star Wars canon is a complex thing. Most of the EU books you refer to were never in top-tier canon, or rather, G-Canon (Lucas canon). Ther tier system went like this:
    G-Canon (George Lucas Canon)
This included the original Star Wars saga and was the highest most unfaltering form of canon.
    T-Canon (TV Canon)
This included the television shows, such as _The Clone Was_ micro series and the CG series.
    C-Canon (Continuity Canon)
This is where a lot of the EU rested. Examples would be many of the video games, such as _The Force Unleashed_ or the campaign from the _Battlefront_ games or _Knights of the Old Republic_ and the like. This also included many of the books such as the _Darth Bane_ trilogy and the _New Jedi Order_ series, etc.
    S-Canon (Secondary Canon)
This is essentially where the "non-canon" material begins. Or in other words, the stuff that generally was unrecognized or referenced to by other media. But this included the original run of Marvel comics and some of the original books. Content creators could choose to pull from this material or not, but it was not required (sort of how the Legends continuity works now).
    N-Canon (Non Canon)
This is in reference to things that straight up were not canon like the alternate timelines of _The Force Unleashed_ or the _Marvel: Infinites_ storylines. This even includes deleted scenes from the movies that conflict with other material. There are also other comics like the _Resurrection_ comic or some of the Marvel Boba Fett material from _Star Wars Tales_ that is non-canon as well.
Today, Star Wars canon is far less dense, with material either being Canon or Legends. Or in other words, G-Canon and T-Canon (with a few exceptions) and then everything else, until they are brought back into canon.
Also, it's a common misconception, but Disney did not make the decision to not follow the previous Expanded Universe. Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm made that decision, as she said at the then Star Wars Anthology panel at Star Wars Celebration 2014.

    • @jedimasterdaniel9666
      @jedimasterdaniel9666 Před 7 lety +7

Antoine Bandele good point & George Lucas had a strict policy on what they did or couldn't do. Before the Prequels were made George Lucas had it off limits because he had that era in mind. He would never allow anyone to write Yoda's origin story because he wants to have him mysterious. Plus with The New Jedi Order series the author thought about killing off Luke, but George Lucas said no because Luke & the two droids were off limits & Lucas said he wanted the Yuuzhan Vong outside of the Force.

    • @Morbos1000
      @Morbos1000 Před 7 lety +24

When did she say it was top tier canon? She just said it was canon, which your post verifies. Also, if Kennedy said that in 2014, that was after Disney bought Lucasfilm. She was therefore a Disney employee at that point, so the decision was made by Disney. It could only *not* be a Disney decision if it was made before the acquisition and was documented as such at the time (i.e. no retconning)

Just before episode seven I wrote a short story about a Ithorian who was a bartender on Coruscant and collected plants. It was in the genre of "casual science-fiction/fantasy" so there wasn't really a story that meant anything for anyone but him. He just experienced a bunch of stuff that allowed him to grow and explore the themes of his thoughts. An example of a circle that gets full is him finally seeing the fruit of a strange plant he collected grow and ripen (and then putting it in a drink - it would be a neat match cut with some humour).
There was also a lot happening in the background that made the world and the scenes interesting. Still not sure if I want a scene where a Jedi chases a bounty hunter (over a pipe between two buildings in the background somewhere in lower Coruscant at about four in the afternoon - almost like a silhouette with some orange rays of light making their way down), but I wrote it just in case.
If it was adapted to a movie it would be directed like a Jaques Tati movie, and the score would alternate between soft jazz (think "The Glass House with Butterfly" by Tomas Dvorak) when it's all chill and introvert, and rhythmic Amon Tobin-esque music (like "Keep Your Distance") when the protagonist is making his way through a busy market or something.
    ...yeah...

The main reason the EU can't be canon anymore is that R.A. Salvatore, worst of his name, killed off Chewie. My headcanon is that Disney are just huge Chewie fans and when they saw that they were like "that's it, nuke the whole thing!" They also bought the franchise specifically so they could bring Chewie back, and we all lived happily ever after.
