R1.5 TRILLION - that’s how much money South Africa and its citizens lost to state capture. The Zondo Commission revealed a lot about state capture and how South African citizens have been robbed by the Zuptas and their complicit cronies. So in this episode Riaad sums it up. Fasten your seatbelts it’s a rough ride but luckily Riaad sees the funny side too. Watch. Share. Comment below.

We can't really stop state capture from happening since the state is always under perpetual capture as enivsaged by Karl Marx who did a good job in demonstrate the relationship between Politcal elites and economic elites who always seek to capture the state. What can be done is to try and limit the scale of state capture firstly by ensuring there are vetting processes when it comes to appointing government officials. Like seriously you can't have a president become appointed solely on the basis of popularity and a cult of a personality. Qualifications, seniority and experience have to be considered at some point when appointing government officials.

corruption affects all of us. Wonke nje umuntu, ngiyacabanga. It threatens sustainable economic development, ethical values and justice. It destabilized our society and endangered the rule of law. It undermines the institutions and values of our democracy.in the townships where i leave the public services are lacking because of corruption and people are even losing hope in being helped by the government in anything.

We're not just gorgeous, we have some intelligence too! Would be great if we had a government who realised that.

This is rubbish. Your definition of STATE CSPTURE encapsulates what happened at CODESA.
Colonial companies kept power and dominance of economy: The only way was to Capture key role players.
In this case the instilled lead negotiator: Cyril. For him and his closest compatriots inclidinf family was made Billionaires in the very same major markets he left to the Colonial companies.
Now your defirion encapsulates this as STATE CAPTURE.
    Let's ask a question.
R9 Billion of our economy was possibly linked (not yet proved as a crime) to Ghupta linked companies. But yet the damage to our economy was 1 Trillion.
So if the GHUPTAS didn't get access or looted the 991 Billion: WHO DID?
Let me tell you. The real CAPTURERS of the STATE that has CAPTURED it from Apartheid years.
Now we are still trying to prove any STATE CAPTURE case report o conviction in court and we will never. For it was false and a cover for the real STATE CAPTURE. .The one that is currently seeing it's true realization of large scale hostile takeover of our energy sector and all major markets. 1000 small businesses closing down because of instilled load shedding by the private sector PUPPET Cyril to take over our economy so it belongs to the very ones that kept our STATE and mines CATURED from APARTHEID.
Now who are you trying to fool or are you just ignorant or spreading the Propoganda that initiated the downfall of the very person who went against the WEST that are keeping us impoverished with their bully financial systems by joining BRICS. The alliance he knew would put AFRICA first and not WESTERN PROFITS first.
    Hence your PROPOGANDA started.
Where do the damage of 991 Billion go if only 9Billion could be linked in contractual responsibilities, to the GHUPTAS.
Funny because Colonial companies have the very same contracts locked in for 30-70 years. Signed by their Now-Partners but then fellow negotiators. Oh wow. But this in your logic is not the STATE CAPTURE that has our country in the damage that it is.
Rubbish. Why don't you rethink my question you Propoganda spreader

Thank you so much for your feedback and for sharing your point of view. It’s important to us to debate important issues in the interest of making our country a better place for all citizens. And it also helps us understand how we got here.
The Guptas were only one network involved in state capture, even though they played a central role. It's clearly widespread because it has continued even after they left the country, the arithmetic here is so rudimentary it's bogus. The real impact of state capture is its systemic impact on the economy, infrastructures and service provisions not just outflows to particular networks and individuals. As for the argument that colonialism is the original sin that's true, but we voted for a developmental state and a Constitutional democracy and we now have that. The proponents of RET have instead mobilised neopatrimonial developmentalism - which seeks to undermine Constitutionality and separation of powers - ostensibly to redistribute resources in favour of promoting black ownership of the productive economy. In reality this has delivered us the worst crises we have endured since the advent of democracy; failures span across all sectors; energy, roads, rail, water and sanitation, healthcare, education and social grants. Organised crime has moved in and has entrenched itself in the affairs of government, the state and the private sector. Loss of investor confidence has crippled growth and employment, and service delivery and infrastructure failures have disproportionately impacted the poor. Codesa is not to blame for the situation we are in; it made some compromises but delivered a constitutional democracy that we have the power to influence through active citizenry. State capture is not active citizenry; neither does it make economic or developmental sense. It is simply a new set of compradore elites seeking to enrich themselves off the state by eroding our democratic foundations. Fanon would see right through this thinly veiled attempt by elites to enrich themselves while claiming to be acting in service of the poor.
