I am curious, did you tell him what you believe is wrong in what the media or certain others are saying? If he has no idea what your beliefs are, then telling him to "figure it out as you go" as a kid does not strike me as the best idea. Many parents have tried that in the last couple generations and it failed miserably. What you believe needs to be instilled into your son, otherwise other people absolutely will do it for you.
The only exception to this might be if he was raised with biblical principles where biblical law is clear, and a fear of God is established. If that does not exist, then you need to go deeper than what you just said.

My experience was slightly different, in the sense that when I was young, I wasn't successful nor had much going for me outside of some favorable physical traits (I'm 6'4, I was thin, above average looks).
