How To Remove Vintage Freewheel Without Tool?

- Hey guys, today I’m going to remove and reinstall this freewheel without specific tool.
This freewheel came from the Peugeot UO-8 in the 1970’s, I need to remove it to replace the broken wheel spokes.
The lock ring has two holes, in order to remove the freewheel, you need to turn this lock ring clockwise.
Figure which Allen key to fit, insert it into the hole and use the hammer to knock it clockwise.
When you remove the freewheel, the ball bearings will spread out around the wheel hub, so you make sure you put a tray or a bucket underneath to catch them.
To reinstall the freewheel, put a small amount of grease around the hub in order to hold the bearings in place.
Make sure you put 47 ball bearings, not 48 or 46, it has to be 47, otherwise your wheel will come off eventually.
Remember to turn the lock ring counterclockwise.

Nice work! I found it humorous that you included picking up all the ball bearings. Exactly what I was looking for.
I have the exact same problem - broken spokes on the rear wheel of a vintage bike! Thanks for this helpful video
Its funny how this is easy, yet complicated without seeing this. Many thanks!
Great video. I took mine apart and didn't remember where to put the rest of the bearings. THANK YOU❤
Thanks for taking the time to make this useful video.
Exactly what I was looking for, thanks!
Awesome restoration and video
thanks ! ! ! also a magnet picker-upper comes in handy for those bearings
How clever is this guy...thank you sir..
This helped me a lot! Thank you!
Exactly the information i needed thanks !
a long roof shingle nail worked well for me. thanks!
Plot twist. He forgot to replace the broken spoke.
I'm sure he did...the point of the video was to remove the free wheel with as little hassle as possible
Thanks bro great guide I followed it to the letter. I also have an old Atom freewheel and a broken spoke - though there was still not enough room to get the spoke in on 22" wheels! Waiting for the proper spline tool in the mail so I can remove the whole assembly. At least I got to clean and repack the bearings which had probably never been done. Mine had 46 bearings in the bottom, 30-something in the top.
Thank YOU for well informed video so good😀
i get motivated by ur videos, time to work on my bike too. 💪
It looked like you could have put a load more ball bearings in there. Surely better to fill up the gaps with bearings ?
Great video
thank u so much brother
didn't actually remove the freewheel, just the gear pack.
thank u thank thank u!
how you remove the body of the freewheel from the bike wheel
Sir what happens if you spin those 2 holes counter clockwise instead?
Nothing will happen.
Perfect
I am curious about science of "exactly 47 ball bearings" in the lower ring. Precisely why should you lose your wheel if you install, say, 44 instead of 47 ball bearings? In addition to this, how can you "lose" the wheel which is tightened on a bike? You could only lose a cog (even that is less likely because you are tightening it with every crank of your foot). Normaly I would'nt ask but I have just opened my factory sealed Maillard Atom SGDG 5-speed freewheel and found less than 47 ball bearings in the lower ring. Care to elaborate?
Let’s say you had 5 bearings but you put three in there three bearings taking on the pressure of five bearings deforming the bearings because of the pressure.
HOW TO FIX if you put it upside down how to loosen it cause it's hard to take off now
Hello do you have any idea how much ball bearings have 7 speed freewheel??
Hi, what is the brand of the freewheel?
Is a SHIMANO MF-TZ21.
Shimano 7 Speed freewheel has 31 3.2mm steel ball bearings. Check this site: www.bikepro.com/products/freewheels/shimfw.html
@@DanyoSports if you say 31, you mean all of it top and bottom bearings??
Nice
Thanks to you CZcams iis better than google
Hey I was just wondering what grease you use
Hi, I was using Lucas heavyduty grease.
@@DanyoSports thank you!
What size are the bearings?
For the new ones you should have been using, not the worn ones you should have thrown away.
Why my cassette still cannot move out even thought your tips is work s
For someones else
Does your cassette have two holes like mine? Try turn it harder.
Mine is similar says "Shimano UG VIA Product of Japan" on the lock ring. Only 40 balls at the bottom, 34 at the top its a 5-speed. Its about 50 years old.
Nice, good to know, thanks for sharing.
I just watched this to refesh my mind..... i already did this but i forgot how i do it without spiling bearing balls..... i but so much gresee it dont have sound anymore
you did not "remove the freewheel". you disassembled it, but the base is still in there. grab with a pipe wrench to remove, unscrew counterclockwise. though that might be destructive, so do only when you want to throw it away anyways. and ... if you got it open already ... it had taken 5 seconds to actually clean the inside.
Hey the lock on mine is still tight pls reply
Hi did you turn it clockwise? Try harder.
I had dificulty removing mine but after some WD40 and some harder hits, it came out. Clockwise.
Nice
Using WD 40 Penetrative before turning works a charm.
This is epic 😂
Does someone know how to remove this thing under cassette
please let me know if you ever find the answer to this
@Batu Çetin yeah I figured out a different way haha. I put it in a vice and spun the wheel, worked like a charm!
Nice trick sir nice video
Thanks for watching.
ok holy shit maybe I don't need to clean this afterall
haha exactly my thoughts. why are loose ball bearings so intimidating
the other is 47 bearing how about the other one?
Just fill up the rest of bearings to it and it should be fine.
Hopefully 20?
If you put a towel under the wheel and use a magnet you won't lose any bearings
well, i think i lost all of my bearings. smh.
I tried this on my bike and my wheel kept on falling off when I drive
I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!
I fell down a hill and broke my elbow because the lockring was not clockwise
Please don’t stop believing the power of clockwise will fix all bikes

Tengs no I noy
Hahaha i turn it anti-clockwise thats why its hard to open... well
Ah, load music.....
Is this a music video
It's that god awful electronic crap. It wouldn't be so bad, but they mix the music in the studio and then let their kid or some mindless schmuck turn the volume control up and down with the beat of the music. Back in the day, that would get your ass booted from one of my parties. Now it's something people pay big money to have done. I don't get it.
Your video is very misleading.thought you didn’t need tool
Tedious very tedious.
Useless
