Join us on a new Expedition Alton Towers as we look at the rough history of Submission. The Chance Double inverter located in X Sector was quite unique in its theming and marketing but was sadly a painful ride. Thank you to Skillshare for sponsoring this video.

Submission vs Slammer? Which is better.
Definitely Slammer
I still remember the sound of that coin now
I think slammer, submission hurts and I hate that flat ride.
My mum is on the promo video at 10:14
Slammer 100%
So, in trying to make a ride that looks like a futuristic torture device, they made an actual modern-day torture device.
Yes ha
That the sorta commitment to theming you really want to see in a Theme Park.
😂😂
*laughs in hero flamingo land*
edit: hero thorpe park? OH MY GOD
But it is dead
The biggest issue with Alton Towers is now the lack of flat rides. It has a good selection of amazing rides, but very little for the rest of the family who don’t enjoy rides, and it’s good to have filler to lower queue lengths. Yeah
That's a shame. Because my fave ride are the small flat rides that spin
Still feel like Towers are hugely missing a solid flat ride line up, especially after removing Ripsaw and Submission. Taking into account the planning restrictions with regards to height, you would think the park would be sprawling with good, modern and proven flat rides. Excluding a drop tower, they could surely work in a Larson Loop, air race or gyro swing etc etc. There is space in the park for such attractions and would fill out the park's lineup.
I just hope that's the next big addition. The pirate area especially seems so out of place now that I think that area, the area where ripsaw was, and some of the land down bottom of xsector, could really use some flat rides as a big park upgrade. It currently feels really stilted the layout of the park, and the fact that there's like 1 major flat ride now is silly
@@AnastasiaThemis Yea.. We got that.. But unthemed flats
We now have the retro squad which I love btw themed flat rides
Now enterprise doesn’t even operate anymore, but they have brought in some fair rides and that’s it. I would kill for a cool flat ride or something.
Great video! I actually really miss Submission, even if it was slightly uncomfortable to ride!
Thanks guys! Me too actually ha
Hi Sausage Roll Shawn 😂
Everyone’s favourite sausage roll!
What is up british thrillseeker
@@ragingbulltaking268 yo. Not much rlly, just enjoying some ETP content
When it is a “futuristic torture device” and it succeeds, you know Alton Towers REALLY goes hog wild with their rollercoaster ideas
When my phone fell out of my pocket 😂
Traumatic moment
Yes the same as the slammer it was rather painful to ride and i didn't want to go on more then once
Despite their similarities i found The Slammer to be WAY more comfortable than Submission. I’d even go as far as to say that The Slammer was my favourite flat ride at Thorpe Park
@@EVILBUNNY28 I loved the Slammer, I'm really sad I only got to ride twice I thought it was great! Submission always made me feel a bit sick and dizzy
Wouldn't it make more sense to go on it once, then more?
This was my first ‘thrill ride’ when I was a kid and couldn’t get onto the bigger rides. All I can remember was how fun it was. I probably wouldn’t say the same almost a decade later however fond memories none the less.
The thing about the crushing restraints is that when they first come down it's a solid "oof" and THEN the lap bar crushes it into your gut. I saw people have to request to get off as they couldn't breath or were in pain.
And then the ride was just. . .meh. Middle rows you felt nothing other than your blood moving and as said it didn't exactlty feel wild. You just wanted it to end to free your ribs.
Lol. Canada's Wonderland has the exact opposite relationship with flat rides. We have a whole bunch of really interesting ones. Even the older ones like Cyclone are still fairly popular from what I know. And if course we have the one and only Sledge Hammer XD
Sledge hammer is my fav when it works
I always loved submission I felt it fit in with x-sector (unlike smiler witch made them change most the theme of the area!) the only problem was how uncomfortable it was lol
Right!
The History of The Haunted Mansion Holiday.
Maybe next year
Always sounded like there was a thousand loose pennies rattling around, anyone happen to know what caused that sound?
A thousand loose pennies rattling around, obviously.
@@alaeriia01 😂
Another great video 👍
It’d be great to see a full 30/50minute “Expedition/history of Alton Towers”
From humble beginnings to today, going through each ride instalment and the effect that they each had on the park :)
It’s a lot to ask and no doubt a huge project, but you know Towers well and as a life long Towers fan, it would be awesome to see 👍
Maybe one day great idea!
@@ExpeditionThemePark Thanks dude :) Keep up the great work 👊🏻
Didnt know that it had been removed last time I went a few years ago with my brother. Oblivion and Submission were some of the first rides I went on as a kid, and when I got to x sector and found the patch of grass my heart sank. Still took a picture same as every trip of us on submission, just sat on the floor with arms up this time. That ride will be very much missed by us.
The greatness of Alton is back
Yessss
@@ExpeditionThemePark I just remembered about the old willy wonks ride and spin ball did u enjoy them too?
@@THE_IRS0I read it and said out loud “I love Willy wanker!”
I remember a college trip back in about 2006 where we got on virtually nothing all day. Busiest I've ever seen the park. Queued for nearly 3 hours just for Nemesis and had to leave the Oblivion queue after 2.5 hours without riding because our coach was leaving. We saw no queue for Submission so we thought we'd ride that instead. It broke down at the end of the cycle. We ended up stuck, painfully for around 20 minutes off the ground in those restraints, wondering if our coach would leave without us. I remember it being a lot more boring to ride than it looked until it broke down. We had to run for the coach, which was thankfully still waiting for us and got greeted with a bollocking for being late. Theme parks are really lousy when busy.
Ah Submission, that one ride I always wanted to go on, but it never opened or broke down when I came close.
Thank goodness I managed to get on Ripsaw.
Sounds right ha
I loved this ride when I was younger! Every time me and my fiancé go to the Towers we always say how we wished it was still running or that they at least replaced it. Same with Ripsaw too. They really need to get some solid flat rides there, just like Thorpe Parks managed to do
YASS EXPEDITION ALTON TOWERS HELL YES
Happy Halloween!
@@ExpeditionThemePark Happy Halloween to you too!
IKR
I like how you set the filming location as Alton Towers. That’s pretty funny.
Never realized Oblivion was the world's first brand new roller coaster! That's sick
Yep, it was the worlds first ever vertical drop rollercoaster.
This was one of my favorite ride designs. We had it at Six Flags New England under the name Double Trouble. Something about the ride's movement was so hypnotizing and satisfying to watch. I miss that ride and Chaos so much ='[
The inverter is one of my favorites rides. Surprising to hear.
Man, this park just LOVES using Hall of the Mountain King in their ads
It’s the park soundtrack
can proudly say this was my first ‘big’ ride when i was 7 , was a great ride :)
Not going to lie, I really enjoyed this attraction when It was open, I think I was 5 so 2013. I remember being so pleased with myself because I got on one of the "big rides". Thanks again for the informative and enjoyable video! 👍
Oops, 8 not 5 lol
I found your channel about a year ago and I’ve been entranced since. Your videos are incredible and inspired me to become a coaster fan myself. Good luck with the rest of your expedition and hopefully there a many more to come 😁
Thank you so much!
The coins rolling around! Just the mention of that took me right back! I didn’t ride often, but I really loved what Submission added to the area. It looked amazing as you walked into X-Sector to see it swinging down at the bottom of the path.
Omg another Alton Expedition Can’t wait for wicker man, I remember waiting each day to see if TPW or someone else had posted a construction update!
Yessss
having moved to New zeland from the UK, and being 45 mins from Alton Towers it was my fave park, and one of the things i miss from not being in the UK, Now having said that i don't miss Submission, only ever rode it once, and that was enough!! Love the channel
This is such a beautiful looking ride. I love the paint job and the futuristic look of it
The Adventuredome in Vegas is one of the few places that still has an Inverter; it also has a Chaos, another rare Chance flatride
Yep! I put a short clip in here
Lmao the fucking inverter. OUCH.
Chaos was one of my favorite rides as a kid.
Love / hate circus circus lol. 🥰
I felt straight nostalgia for the Adventure Dome's Inverter when you were talking about the ride type. It's so weird to get hit with that about a 5 acre indoor park.
Never rode Submission, but as soon as I saw the Zipper I knew what pain you meant.
Great video! Really enjoyed watching and can’t wait to see more content 😎🙌🏻
Yes! Been waiting for this one
Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween Expedition Theme Park! 👻🎃👻🎃
Happy Halloween!
Very entertaining and fun to watch. Thanks for posting this.
The Queue-Line for Submission is still there with all the Queue Signs etc.
This video was great and I can’t wait for the next one
This makes me appreciate how my home park (Adventuredome at Circus Circus) has one of the few permanent Inverters.
I thought it was fantastic as a mini thrill seeker and it added to the atmosphere of the area! Also it was great theming for the area!
Reminds me of how Knoebels kept 1001 Natcht running until just a few years ago. It was a hassle for maintenance and the ride ops had to balance out both sides because it had a single arm and not the double arm version.
So so soooooo happy that over the shoulder restraints are fast becoming a thing of the past.
seeing the "welcome back sam" as apart of an advertisement and getting highkey paranoid for a milisecond was fun lmfaooo. same name club!
Same name club!
@@ExpeditionThemePark same name club where everyone ALSO typos our name as the word “same,” perhaps? 😂💖 this video is amazing btw, thank you per usual for your brilliant content. Hope all is well, safe, and healthy on your side of the pond!
Submission used to be one of my favourite rides when i was kid the fact it was uncomfortable made it 10x better for me who the hell goes to alton towers to be comfortable
I'm not gonna lie, I could binge watch all your videos 3 times and never got bored
I miss the inverter carnival rides. It was always my favorite as a kid and I loved when traveling fairs/carnivals had it in their lineup
Great video as always 🤘
Expedition Alton towers are the best!!!!!
I have never got more excited for a upload
Yay!
YESSS AN EXPEDITION ALTON TOWERS IM SO HAPPY
Happy Halloween !
@@ExpeditionThemePark Happy halloween :D
The colors of these are absolutely sick
Another incredible vid!
Got to ride the short lived one at Six Flags New Orleans quite a few times as well as few at carnivals. Though it was a bit uncomfortable, it was quite a fun ride.
Good video, I enjoyed the history of it
A new modern version with comfortable restraints of this would be sweet
I rode this at Alton towers in 2018 it was the most powerful and painful ride ever feel like you bang your head coming down I was 17 when I rode this. Those bars were so tight man and a rough ride glad it’s gone now.
Love that you used the RCT Space style music on this! 😀
The best
This looked like a DEEPLY Unpleasant ride!! I’ve ridden the single inverter ride at Circus Circus in Vegas once...only once, because it wrenched my neck so bad I couldn’t turn my head for several days! No thank you..!
Great vid as always! Would love to see more videos on alton towers 'secret weapons' that you have not done yet
This is the best expedition. I expect more soon
Thanks
Great video thankyou so much 👌😊
I used to work the Time Warp at Geauga Lake for several summers. Never saw the 2 arms work together. Please do a whole video on Geauga Lake. It was an amazing place to work. So sad to see the park closed and now demolished.
Love this channel, especially during these dark times. Would like to see a Wild Artic from Sea World Orlando video or one based on Test Track.
Oh my dayyyyssss, I remember this, never rode it I was to small lol, but I used to watch it go round for hours when I was at towers XD!
Haha yessss happy Halloween!!

Hopefully some day we will see a new flat ride come to x-sector
Hope so!
These videos are really interesting I really like videos like this
Thank you
Happy Halloween, Expedition Theme Park!👻🎃😈
Happy Halloween!
I’ve never ridden these flat rides these looked pretty crazy
So I used to operate one of these at the Kemah Boardwalk before they removed theirs. This was 2008/09. I eventually got promoted to rides supervisor there. One day in 2010 while I was supervisor, the rides left driveshaft that inverts the gondola had one of its bearings break and it vibrated so bad you could feel it in the ground 1000 feet away. Insane. That was it for the ride. The driveshaft breaking and one of its two motors going bad and Landry’s called it quits with the ride. A Larson Fireball now sits where it used to.
I remember that ride there and when they opened the boardwalk. Landry's used to have a warehouse on Katy Rd near N Post Oak. They aviator parts sat on outside the warehouse for a year or two before it was installed at Kemah. You could see it from the adjacent Malibu Grand Prix.
@@JEdwardBanasikJr another awful ride. The housing where the hydraulic pump sat was always a mess and the main base of the ride was always spraying hydraulic fluid everywhere. Same with the ride they had there called The Bouncer. What a mess.
I *_loved_* this ride as a kid!
I like his videos because they are not boring and they are interesting
Thanks haha
Didn't realise this had closed! I must stumble through life ass backwards
Ha the best way
Love your Alton Towers videos. Please do more UK theme parks
this was an amazing ride i miss it everytime i go!!!
I was once watching a version of this with a static car and was lucky enough to see the person in the front throw up while inverted and then 'catch' it again at full speed on the drop.😂
I remember this ride. I've never truly been on it but I remember ads for this ride. Also great video
Thank you
I would LOVE to ride the Smiler! Unfortunately I'm in the US and a poor enthusiast so probably not gonna happen but I can't imagine getting off the Smiler and then getting on Submission. Flat rides don't do anything for me. With that said I can see how this ride could be exciting and fun. I just don't think I would want to spend time riding it when I could be in line for Oblivion.
Awesome video!!!
Thank you
To be honest x sector needs more going on in the area we only have 2 thrill rides
And enterprise!
@@ExpeditionThemePark But sometimes I don't even see that running

Great video ^-^ would love to see your take on Dollywood and some of its rides one of these days
I always thought it looked a load of tat but never rode it. Great videos as always, thank you
I actually loved Submission. Such a great and weird ride.
My first ever theme park ride full stop. Wasn't tall empower for the coasters so we ended up on this, was actually good fun 😂
Great video, Really enjoyable
Thank you
Yes! Kemah Boardwalk has one in Kemah, Texas. I is one of those "bark is worse" than its bite (other than painful restraints) It was definitely a ride you were more than glad to run to the when you were released! LOL! I also call those rides (coin suckers) Intamin rides were notorious for getting the chain out of your pocket & stuck in the seats.
I remember the sound of all the loose change rolling around that ride! :).
Rode this in Vegas many a time always regretted about halfway through
Although it was a little painful, I still loved this flat ride! Also loved Ripsaw... really disappointed Alton Towers keeps removing these kinds of flat rides.
I loved this ride when it was at Alton Towers!
Hey Sam! I just wondered if you could do an expedition of the boatride at the back of Alton Towers (where the dungeon is now)?
I remember riding it when it was a Toytown-themed ride but never when it was Charlie and The Chocolate Factory as I was too old by the time it opened and every time I went in always seemed to be broken down.
I loved the Inverter!
I really enjoyed this ride. Was a lot of fun and a good laugh with friends. Although the 'spatulas of doom' were a bit tight for a man.
PEOPLE SURE SENT THIS RIDE INTO SUBMISSION!
Gotta say well done for catching your phone, big applause there
That looks so good to me for some reason
I remember the inverter at the fairgrounds in the early 2000’s. I never remember it being painful. It was really popular as far as I remember, but it was removed a few years after.
Might just be submission
