Was just searching for troubles or weaknesses in the genetics with this variety. Lol, thank you! I too was noticing the young plants were looking wimpy…like they were susceptible to problems. Went ahead and uppotted them after listening to your testimony and experience.

This year I have grown some for the very first time - from seed, and I'm so thankful to find your video about them. I was not sure what to expect related to how big they grow, but WOW...they get very tall! I noticed that your "very ripe" one seemed to be growing sprouts inside of it. Thank you for the vid and extra info!
Hey there! I’m so glad you found my video helpful. You are the exact audience I make these for. When you’re excited about a new plant you want to see what to expect! I do this too for all my new varieties. I couldn’t always find what I was looking for so I decided to make my own videos as I knew there must be other people like me out there :-)

To busy to write but Brad's Atomic grape earned a double size spot next season in my garden.

Yes! Such a great variety! Have you seen any mutations in your crops? Any fruit growing larger than usual?
Yes moor double size than normal for tomatoes .
I did grow lights and starting seedlings for my first year and lots of knats problem killed over half my plants and most have damage and vary as far as their recovery, some plants badly damaged and some definitely stunted and I believe all had 20 percent not fully recovered. I did over plant and most of my veriaties did have at least samples to try. Only 2 hillbilly tomatoes for 2 plants and both had damage.
So if I plant 6 healthy Brad's Atomic grape I expect 10 times the crop so all my folks will have plenty to pick.
This year I tried no tilt and several other methods it was meant to be a testing season and man is turning out,
A bad year for my garden but fill I have learned so much, Highly believe next year with show I've been in school and graduated.

The tomatoes look really cool
I think those big tomatoes are all fused blossoms with maybe four or more blossoms fused together, they look amazing!
Could be! Certainly amazing looking tomatoes. I saved the seeds from that big one. I'm gonna grow it next year and see what I get!
I grew them last year and found them to be closer to a Plum size. A friend had one in a container and the fruit were closer to Grape size. They were larger than I expected. Mine had black shoulders and stripes. The orange and red was the best indication of ripeness. Also I found that they came off the vine easily when ripe. I love the flavor. It is different in flavor from other varieties. I give a lot of tomatoes to friends and one of them called it the little watermelon tomato. Apropos!
I had the same experience! I was expecting smaller grape size fruit. The ones in my 5 gallon buckets were smaller but the one in the ground was a large plum size. There seems to be quite a bit of genetic variations with this particular variety still. I'm excited to grow from the seeds I saved last year from that mutated tomato is this video. I'll let you know how it goes!
@@inchwormgardens my grow zone is also 7a but it will be interesting to see differences. I neglected to save seeds from last year so I had to go back to BC to replenish. Happy to compare notes. I am going to try to do about 30some varieties this year. Probably too many. Eh, you only live once.

@@inchwormgardens my area is not too far from the Atlantic. Is is warm, humid and pretty wet. Jersey is great for tomatoes. Had great success last year with Cherokee Purple, Brad's, Upstate Oxheart (big, meaty tomato), Early Girl hybrid, Bodacious Hybrid and Mr. Stripey.

I grew them this year. 80% of them split. The ones that ripened were dull in flavor. But they looked cool.
Dang! Sorry you had a bad experience with them! I've had trouble with them splitting too.

From my research it seems to me this hybrid is not very predictable. It seems to have a huge variation in both size, flavor and how productive the plants are. At least more than other widely grown variety.
@@bleb87 Hey, the absolute best way to learn is from your own experience and errors along the way! I agree, this variety seems to be unstable. Every year it's a little different. I've been saving and growing my own seeds each year so I think it's starting to adapt to my environment. Pretty cool!

He has another related variety called Atomic Fusion. The description below seems to match what you stated regarding the random larger fruits. I'd be interested to see how many locules they have compared to the standard 5 that the normal Atomic Grape tomatoes have

dude, this is great information. He must have been getting those random larger fruits and started selecting those out to create the Atomic Fusion. How cool! Thanks so much for sharing this! And you taught me a new word; "Locule". Didn't have the proper name for those little chambers. Thanks again!
@@inchwormgardens Haha, no problem. I learned that word when I was researching tomato genetics. Among roughly 10 genes, the number of locules helps to influence the size of a tomato. Wild, small tomatoes only have 2

Hi Richelle, thank you so much! Good soil, sunlight, water and lots of LOVE! 😄haha, I don't do too much else to my plants. I was giving them a regular feeding of a water soluble fertilizer until about mid June and then I stopped (mostly out of laziness) I think that if I would have continued this then my Fall garden might look a little better. Hey there!! I think they should grow just fine for you :) Just keep in mind that they can be a little wimpy starting out so just don't get discouraged! They usually pick up and do really well in the long run. Good luck and enjoy!

I'm wondering why yours aren't dark at all, i grew mine in the Greenhouse with not exactly the most translucent fabric film last Year and they were nice dark with lots of Antocyanin. You seem to have a lack of sunlight. Greetings from Germany.
Hello! That's very interesting. I'm not sure why these were a lighter color. They were grown in full sun. There seems to be some variation in the genetics of this plant. Maybe this particular seed was just expressing some of the lighter colors. Who knows! That is part of the fun of growing :) Thanks for watching!

Great review. Brads taste amazing! I've been growing them four seasons now, and they have been so prolific, so easy to grow, so heat and humidity tolerant, I can't imagine ever not growing them again. If you give them enough space, they will get 7-8 feet tall. Clusters of plum-sized really are very cool. I live in Coastal VA, w/ pretty severe summer humidity, and they continue to thrive. BTW, they make the best tomato sauce! ...weird color sauce, but the taste is off the hook!

The larger tomato looks like a Berkeley Tie Dye, more then a Brads Automic.

Yes indeed! This is an heirloom variety so the seeds can be saved and should grow true to type.

How have your litchies. Been doing. My one plant blooms and blooms, but because I dont have two of them they are not setting fruit. My cardinal basil is just starting to create flowers. They are just small burgundy colorations right now. Zone 8 SC
I believe Baker Creek Photoshops their pictures TREMENDOUSLY. And I have known a number if people who’ve grown this tomato and think it’s just meh. Nothing special. I think people are afraid to speak the truth because it’s so popular, I believe because of their altered photos.
I think you're totally right about that. I think the marketing and the original photo that accompanied the release of this variety played a big part in the popularity. But I have to say, I do actually enjoy the flavor of it and I love seeing the photos in their big catalog! So I can't be too mad at it, haha.
@@inchwormgardens I’m a market seller. I do mixed bundles of several types of cherry and snacking tomatoes. Every year, starting in late September, I start planning my tomatoes for the next year’s offerings. I keep coming back to this one.
I only choose EXQUISITELY flavored tomato varieties. I put hours and hours of time into this process. I’m at a loss every year with this one. I’m just not sure they’re up to our standards after reading so many meh reviews.
I want my buys to need to take a seat after eating our tomatoes. It’s a tough standard! I want so badly for them to be exceptional. But then I know I’ll be heartbroken when they don’t knock my socks off.

I have a mutated seedling it is a tomato it has 3 seed leaves it is alive I wander if the fruit will de mutated.
Cool! It's unusual to see 3 seed leaves. Maybe there is some sort of mutation! Best of luck to you.

@@pamelarice1887 Awesome! With 100 plants you certainly have higher odds of getting some sort of mutation.
I found those to be inedible. Horrible flavor. Mine had more striking colors, similar to those on the catalog, but not exactly the same. I grew 4 or 5 plants in different locations, all were prolific. I wonder if it’s like cilantro, I can’t eat that either. Maybe it’s a genetic thing. 🤮
Oh wow! I've never heard that before but I can see what you mean. Maybe there's something in that specific tomato variety that makes it taste "off" to you, like the cilantro thing. Other tomatoes taste okay though? What are some of your favorite tasting varieties?

I grew them one and while pretty, nothing spectacular in taste for me either. Currently growing Evergladrs currant tomatoes, hoping for better taste and more productive plants due to heat and humidity.
