The tomato growing experiment has had a small change | Brad’s atomic grape

  • Who doesn't want free tomato plants? Even I couldn't resist so I've planted a couple of suckers from my Brad's Atomic Grape tomato plants and firstly I was genuinely amazed at how quickly they root and turn into viable tomato plants and secondly I'm curious. Can I grow these tomatoes outdoors in my garden? It may be too late to try to grow these outdoors for me now but I thought it was a perfect chance for another gardening experiment, and as the plants were free then if it doesn't work then I'm not losing precious plants.

    I grow a lot of suckers & My advice is that you need to keep those suckers out of direct sunlight for about 9 days before taking back outside/repotting. They need time to boost grow a capable/stable root structure while also defending themselves in wilt mode. It happens really fast but they just need protection from the heat of direct sun for 7 to 9 days... They will normally be ready when their wilt has clearly gone & When done & potted on they can go direct into a final growing position and will do amazing & will do far better than a seed grown plant in many cases. They often give lower fruit trusses too. That's just my experience... . :)

    My outdoor tomatoes (located this year, near the house to protect them from the afternoon sun) are going like gang busters. I have none in the greenhouse, since they wouldn't survive more than an hour in there during these summer months. 107 F here, the last two days, which has scalded two of my tomatoes, and one English (Japanese) cucumber.
    Strange, I was under the impression that you could grow tomatoes in Scotland during the summer. I didn't know that they had to be in a greenhouse, so I learned something new today.
    Good luck with your outdoor tomatoes, and thanks for the tip about planting their suckers, Eli.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  Před 2 lety +1

      I suppose it’s like everything else, if you have the right spot and length of time needed. Some folk do manage to grow tomatoes in their gardens here but you don’t get a huge harvest compared to in the greenhouse because we don’t get enough days with those temperatures. And even though Scotland is tiny by IS standards that actually means we get a huge range in weather conditions… lots and lots of coastline compared to the amount of inland. So two cities 60 miles apart get very different growing conditions. The west coast is famous for the Gulf Stream and being warmer, wetter and being able to grow loads more.

    Congratulations on 17K 🎉🌻🎈!!! Even the small suckers will root(actually sometimes faster), nothing better than a free plant! Someone had suggested rooting a sucker off their plant in Autumn and keeping alive inside throughout winter to see if that will give a jump start to the next season. I may try that for experiments sake even though it’ll likely just be stunted. I don’t have any of the same varieties of tomatoes as you’re growing but they’re coming along better than they did last year so I’m excited about that. We’ve also escaped the over 100F days for June(although today is suppose to be close😬) so they’ve had it a bit easier. We are mad…mad about Eli and Kate! I don’t have room to start more tomatoes with the suckers. But such a great idea. I cut some basil to cook with. The extras have been in a cup of water. They have roots now. I think I’ll pot them out so I get even more basil…question, I think you said that typically Indeterminate tomatoes get topped after so many trusses of fruit. Over never really done that. I just let them grow and grow. Especially the cherries. I take off suckers but let the main stem go. Should I “top off” others like larger varieties? Maybe that is why I wait so long for them to ripen. Let me know what you think.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  Před 2 lety +2

      Ahhh but you live in lovely sunny land Baron. It might not be a thing for you guys, but in the UK it’s traditional because the weather and light starts to get pants by about, we’ll mid July for me and I think end of Aug down south, so we do it to give the plant a chance to focus on ripening what’s on the stems before it gets too cold.
      Not sure if you’d need to or maybe at the end of this season, count how many ripe trusses you’ve had and then nip out to one more? And see if that helps?

    I live in a townhouse,no real garden and for the last few years have successfully grown tomatoes on my top floor balcony, in pots. This is just outside my bedroom! So I wake up to a ‘jungle view’. Anyway this year I only growing 21 plants, no hanging cherries as they refused to germinate! Growing a variety, Alisa Craig, Orange Princess, Tigerella, Black Opal, and a small plum cherry, ( can’t remember it’s name)!
    Also got 3 aubergine up there with the toms.

Thank you for the tip on larger pots adding some additional nutrients. Do you pick off the first flowers on your indeterminate Tomatoe plants? Some “weirdos on the internet” have suggested doing that as a way to get a more bountiful harvest by putting the plants early energy into growing roots and foliage rather than fruit . Just curious.

    @DigwellGreenfingers Před 2 lety +1

    Cool Eli. Did you use suckers or side shoots?
    Suckers come from the root system under the soil surface, side shoots grow from the leaf axil. I see Steve used side shoots.
    The trouble with using suckers is, if you have a grafted tomato then you are just growing a new rootstock - unless, of course, you want more rootstock LOL

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  Před 2 lety +2

      You would say sideshoots then.
      Most folk I speak to know them as suckers (except on trees) and use the term suckers so rather than try to score points or to try to look clever it’s more useful for me to use terms people recognise as part of explanations. It’s why I stopped using latin botanical names as well.

    • @DigwellGreenfingers
      @DigwellGreenfingers Před 2 lety +1

      @In the Garden with Eli and Kate
      You say, "Most folk know them as suckers and use the term suckers so rather than try to *score points* it’s more useful to use terms people recognise as part of explanations. It’s why I stopped using latin botanical names as well."
      A pity really as it only takes one or two respected channels to give things the wrong name and for one or two followers to copy them and the next thing you know, its name has changed incorrectly. Think calabrese and broccoli, spring onions and green onions, microgreens and shoots etc
      I was just asking if you were potting on side shoots or suckers.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  Před 2 lety +1

      Please don't think the scoring points thing was a reference to you Steve, that maybe didn't come across as well as I thought it did in my head. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I guess it depends on the purpose of your channel. We have a similar thing where we are trying to make gardening fun and less daunting (which we know it can be). We both have a more relaxed laid back approach (yes I'm a sneaky subscriber on your channel) whereas a lot of channels/blogs etc are about looking like experts. That's just not something I'm interested in. My purpose was to try to encourage folk to garden in some small way. Specifically aimed at folk (like me) who maybe felt they weren't really the gardening type or would be welcomed with open arms at an allotment site etc. When it comes to language, I know some people don't like it when they see UK CZcamsrs using American names and commonised terms but you have to use language that your audience use (so if you are one of the channels that are about showing your expertise, you would be using botanical terminology or using the most recent names for things cause we know it always blooming changes), it's why I say spring onions instead of cybies which is the correct term in Scotland, same with blackberries instead of brambles and on and on. In the name of the wee man that was the longest explanation ever so I should shut up. All in all :D. I'm soooo not one of these respected channels you speak of... I'm the small fry at the back of the queue with that one but I do maybe put an awful lot more thought as a teacher into the videos than I let on - hence the enormous reply sorry about that. Hope you at least had a coffee.

    Hi Eli and Kate one quick question, i have grown Tomatos for years now and you mentioned about pinching the tips off around the 4ft mark, why then have you got a bamboo cane in the pot that looks like it's 6ft+ tall? if you are pinching the tip out at 4ft then have the cane at 5ft. I saw when you carried it out the way how it could easy topple over because of the height of the pole/cane making it a bit top heavy.
    Stay Safe,
    Barry (the Wirral)

      Hey Barry
      At wee bit of misunderstanding. Not 4ft… the traditional thing with outdoor tomatoes in the UK is to only let them develop to 5 or 5 trusses… so they can still get to about 5th or 6ft before to snip the growing tip off. Traditionally in a greenhouse you’d let them get a bit bigger, maybe 6 trusses.
      But again…. Traditions are only there are guidance, not laws you must adhere to 😀

      @@eliandkate Definately a missunderstanding there, i was a bit concerned about the height of the cane compared with the size of the container to the height of the Tomato more than anything.

      Ah secret weapon 😀. The canes can be attached to the shed wall… you generally have to attach the canes to something if you’re using them as they will, as you sai, give up the ghost eventually

    Please can you tell me what you have on top of your tomato pots.? (The white stuff)? You’ve probably mentioned it somewhere!

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  Před 2 lety +1

      It’s just grit as a mulch to stop the birds digging in the pots but it has the added benefit of reducing evaporation

      I might try adding to my pots, as am finding the water seems to be going right through the compost this year, don’t think the compost is up to much! But the plants seem to be fine!

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  Před 2 lety +2

      You could give it a try.
      It won’t stop the water draining out the pots but helps reduce the natural evaporation in the hot weather

    Hi Eli,
    Do you keep your Ikea SORTERA bins outside in the garden or inside the shed? I was looking for something to store compost in but am worried about bugs getting into the bin if I leave it outside.

      @eliandkate  Před 2 lety +1

      I keep the one with compost in the greenhouse, the outside ones have perlite, bark and paper

      @@eliandkate Do the contents not get wet when it rains?

      I have a plastic covering on top of the contents so that keeps them dry.
      A little water gets in when it rains but not nearly as much as I thought

    I have a very important question - I've just realised we have the same IKEA plastic boxes. My plan was to put perlite, grit and compost in each one, but then I saw they didn't look waterproof on the top. Do you have any issues when it rains? Thank you!!

      Oh good question
      I’ve found they are fine in light rain but not in heavier bursts.
      I have a plastic bag over the top of mine just in case

      @@eliandkate This is really helpful, thank you! I was disappointed when I saw they weren't water tight but with an old compost bag over the top I'm sure they'll work. I love your painted boxes!

      It defo helps
      I’ve split an old bag so it’s flat… put it over the top and then the lid. The lid clamps the plastic on and stops any leaks
