- Dear NHL: PLEASE let us have a goalie scrap! Last season, we almost got an all time goalie scrap for the history books. One of the leagues biggest villains in Jordan Binnington vs one of the leagues most beloved in Marc Andre Fleury. Both wanted it, the entire hockey universe wanted it and instead the officials broke it up. An outcome I will ever forgive the league for. Weeks earlier in a similar incident in Anaheim, after Copley went after Vatrano John Gibson was suddenly at centre ice and ready to go. Once again, it was the zebras getting in the way. The NHL seems to have told officials they don't want it because last night, we could've had another between Ducks Gibson and Blackhawks Mrazek. this one was maybe more deserving than any. John Gibson has been in goalie hell, getting absolutely peppered in Anaheim for years now. His numbers are NOT a fair reflection of his play. Petr Mrazek, I wouldn’t consider the same calibre but similarly, he’s played pretty well on probably the worst team in the NHL. After what both of these guys have had endure all season long, they have earned the right to go at it!
Last night, at the Connor Bedard Show, after the kid had himself a historic night becoming the 3rd youngest player in NHL history to record a 5 point night, it meant on the receiving end of that, was John Gibson and the Ducks. Gibson, despite being great early, was once again tested heavily with 18 shots in the first. After the game became a blowout in the 3rd with a 6-2 score, a scrum lead to Gibson crossing the red line and going after Mrazek. Oh, what could have been.... If the NHL really wants more viewership, they would absolutely let goalies go at it. If the Bennington Flower fight had happened, it would have generated clips and buzz for weeks.
Im sort of semi-new to hockey, been a fan for around 4 years. how do goalie altercations even start when they're on opposite sides?
@@ram_taka3436 Usually it happens after a really big scrap around the net and especially if a goalie gets involved. The other goalie sees it and basically skates the length of the ice to get into it. It is a penalty if a goalie crosses center ice.

I was at that Kings-Ducks game last year and I'll tell you what, everyone in the arena, regardless of who he supported, was dying to see Copley and Gibson fight. The zebras robbed us (me) of something legendary and I'll never forgive them for it

How did Mrazek not get the gate? 3rd man in to an altercation, not just a fight, but anytime at least a minor penalty was assessed during an altercation, if a third player intervened , that used to be an automatic game misconduct.
It’s the Ducks - they never get the benefit of the doubt - and the Blackhawks - the NHL darling. That’s why.

Mrazek was getting involved. One team had 6 guys in the scrum the other had 5. If you're not going to grab the goalie that's trying to get into it, at a minimum you have to let the other goalie come down and even it up.

@@btgkg9639 doesn't matter, if Mrazek stays in his crease Gibson stays in his. As soon as a goalie goes and gets in a scrum and starts grabbing players on the other team the other goalie is coming down. That's how it is.

Swayman has made a couple attempts to fight in Boston, but in his case the other goalies haven't accepted the invitaion lol
the problem is that nobody wants the boot for crossing center ice. That is why almost no goalie takes the invite.

But again, would you want to be kicked out the game and potentially leave your team down because you wanted to fight and most likely not even get the chance? ive sat at the red line myself a few times but i never want to cross it because i would give my team a penalty. Unless someone is beating the shit out of one of my teammates i wouldnt cross that line in just a regular scrap.

Mike Smith vs Cam Talbot is the last one I can remember. Watched that game live and I’ll never forget it.
I was upset that they didn’t let Binner and Fleury go at it. Fleury always wanted a fight, said so himself, and it would give Binner a chance to either prove he’s not all talk. Love both Binner and Fleury and it would’ve been great to see. The only way a fight happens is if both goalies agree to it at a different time and then while skating around between whistles rush each other. But it’s unlikely since their job isn’t to fight

i watched the game where he had 50 saves against the canes, they had like 10 shots with pressure in a row and the ducks go up and shoot one shot and its in the net
Usually a goalie only wants to fight when two of his guys are holding an opponent and he can take a shot with his blocker. There are immune to any type of retribution unless the other goalie skates the length of the ice to engage. You rarely see that. Goalies know they will never have to go one on one.
Sadly the last goalie fight i can remember was Mike Smith vs Cam Talbot, and the stadium erupted

They can't let the goalies fight. What if your goalie knocks the other goalie out and becomes the target of the other team? Goalies are way too vulnerable to be subjected to that, even if individual goalies are fool hardy enough to put themselves in that situation

Here me out NHL allows goalies to fight but either one of 2 things happen. Both goalies get ejected or both goalies get a 2 min minor for fighting. That way we get what we want as fans but then they punish the goalies instead of stopping it before it happens

How do goalies get into it? I’ve never understood it. They’re at opposite ends of the ice and don’t interact with each other during play. Anyone?
Usually when one goalie does something the other goalie shouldn't do. Like if a goalie goes after a player the other goalie will most likely go after that goalie.
As a goalie we had a code, look up the ice and if eye contact was made and a nod it meant a tossing of hands, if the ref was close you played it cool until it you had an opening and met up. Refs are too soft nowadays

If you break up a goalie fight before it starts, you should be fined $50 and have to wear pink and black strips for a week. If you are a ref, you must also wear a brown armband for a week.

They should just stop ruining what made the NHL great. I agree with the push to put a stop to hits to the head but the anti fighting sentiment and weak penalty calls are ruining the league.

I’m all for it but Mzarek wasn’t going to fight or had any intention to. Gibson had a chance last year when Copley was beating the Ducks player but he just stood at the blue line.

I think the reason is the helmet removal rule. You can see from the clip below that linesmen will step in as soon as a player removes their lid. Since goalies all wear cages they have to remove their helmets. Well, it's hard to argue that cheap shots between the two are worthy of a release valve. The guys are 180 feet apart. There is no justification for goalies fighting each other, ever. There's no reason for hockey to descend into the make believe world of fake wrestling to entertain fans.

Ok so I like the goalies doing this but I can also understand the leagues standing with this about ten years ago Boogard was annihilating the nhl with fights such as Cam Janson and other's but a lot of them died from CTL injuries to the brain. Their wives kinda pushed Betman to change rules but he was very...elusive with reporters and airy fairy in court.

Goalie scraps are a dumb idea. If your starter gets decked and now you have to play with a backup upon backup you risk your season going bye bye. I get it. Tough guy blah blah blah. That's why you have enforcers. Leave the goalies alone because there aren't that many good ones and let the goons figure it out.
