It's a great way to make people respect you, especially if you are a generally kind person who might be seen as vulnerable by exploiters. Abusive people however will go out of their way to show others how "good" they are to lure them in. So will people pleasers, but they are less likely to make themselves as noticed by others as abusers are.

I remember watching the documentary about Rick James like two years before the Chapelle show segment. One of the many details I remembered was when she said to “Rick you’re gonna go to jail for this.” He looked at her and said “I’m Rick James bitch.” Naturally, when I first saw the segment, and that was the main punchline. I was honestly tickled by the idea that Chapelle would put that in there, and surprise that nobody else ever brought up that detail.
That punchline didn’t come from Rick James saying it to his victim, the punchline came from Rick James going off on a woman who was working a music event and questioned if Rick should be there or not. In true to Rick James fashion, after he received his music award and gave his acceptance, “speech“ at the very end he referenced the lady work in the event and said, “I’m Rick James B…!!”
