- Today we're going through the Hanayama UFO solution.

The UFO puzzle is one of the toughest Hanayama puzzles I've ever done. It's misleading and it's very much a trial and error solve the first time you attempt it.
So today I'm doing my best to talk you through how the puzzle works and the easiest ways to solve it.
An explanation of how the 4 ball pieces work will help you understand how and why the UFO puzzle solves the way it does which will make it easier to actually do.
Don't get me wrong though, the solution for the UFO is tough to do. There are moves which are very awkward and some require a bit of practise to master.

PSA: If you are in the same boat as a lot of people and can't get your puzzle open even while following along. It's not you, it's the puzzle, unfortunately these are mass produced casts. They aren't all perfect. My UFO puzzle will not ever come apart by hand, you have to get the pieces aligned and pry it out with a small flat blade screwdriver. My friends UFO however when properly aligned the piece will literally fall out.
As much as I love Hanayama puzzles this is my 2nd puzzle that has had a similar problem. The tolerances should be made in a way that it should never prevent you from solving the puzzle.
And thank you Ross for another fantastic solution video. I absolutely hate having to look at a solution but after almost a year revisiting this damn puzzle I'm glad I did.
That's definitely what's wrong with mine. I had to use a paperclip and pick the key piece out, because it wouldn't drop on its own. The fact that I had to use a tool means this was a poorly designed puzzle.

@@yourlocalsociopath9303 I struggled with mine for 4 days before realizing it wasn't going to come apart. Ultimately, I had to pry the piece out with a screwdriver and file down the points on the inside so that it could "drop" out the way the solution explains. Now it works exactly how it should, but it took some modification.
I definitely think that’s the problem with mine. It just won’t budge despite me doing everything correctly
I struggled with this one for a couple days even after watching the video. The first piece didn't want to slide out for some reason. I finally got it to go in place and now this one is a breeze to take apart and put back together. Thanks for the help!!!

I saw in another video and found out for myself that if you jiggle the puzzle after identifying and positioning the first piece, that it can come out easier (for me at least). I used an up/down motion and tapped the puzzle against my palm and that got it started. Once I went to move the first piece tho, it slipped right back into the sphere. I found success after vibrating the puzzle with my massage gun lol. (Sometimes you gotta think outside the box). Reassembling it now and I’m stuck getting the first piece back in again. Gonna tinker with it a bit more (might employ that massage gun again too). Thanks for such a helpful tutorial on this puzzle. Can’t wait to tell my nephew that I have gotten it done. He’s been working on this thing for over a year lol.
Wow, this video must have ten times as many comments as any other puzzle video you have! Shows how hard it is.
I have found an error in my puzzle. There are three identical pieces marked 2 and one marked 3. No surprise it cant slide as easily as in your solution. Instead it often gets totally jammed. Extremely hard to reassembe :(
But that makes my puzzle a unique level 7 challenge :D

Wow that's interesting... I've never heard of a problem like that with any Hanayama puzzle. That's quite an error they've made.

I saw the same comment on another video. It may be human error on the assembly line, grabbing the wrong pieces.

First I really appreciate your video explaining this PITA puzzle. Usually I can do just about any puzzle with a little work and I never ask for help. I can even complete a Rubik's cube with little effort. But this ufo has been within reach for years and I still never got it no matter how many times I watch your video. I've had dozens of friends try and fail. 😢
I just threw mine into the back of my closet. I've done a ton of hanayama and this is the only puzzle I've ever bought that I have genuine buyers remorse.

The box says this is a level four but i beg to differ. This is so frustrating for me that I been tempted to throw it as far as I can and never try to find it. I bought a level 6 with it and got the level six one done. Even with this video, I have yet to get this puzzle done
I think you're right, this should be a level 5 or 6.

Itried for weeks trying to slide the puzzle apart with the ball inside I never thought to get a piece apart. I love this puzzle. I carry it with me just cause it was a gift from my daughter and I love this solution. I'm on to the infinity puzzle that looks like a "8"
So far coaster, UFO, news, dial. Those are the ones I've done and coaster was rather easy. And news was stupid. This UFO I love.
Ha! I did exactly the same... kept trying to slide it apart. I definitely have more of a love/hate situation with this one though, it was hard work.
I found the infinity much easier than this one, even though it's a higher difficulty. Good luck!
Coaster is a nightmare for me. I hate those layered puzzles, like Ring also. My brain just doesn't process them well. I found Infinity easier than Coaster. Agree on NEWS... Ridiculous puzzle. You literally can't DO anything to have any fun, and the mechanism isn't logic based so it's essentially luck or puzzle experience. Not my cup of tea.

Tried the solution over the course of a day and cant get it to work, I am simply not going to be able to solve it so I will never touch it again.
You can do it! This one just takes a lot of patience and perseverance. Keep trying those 4 different combinations of pieces and trying to slide that first piece out.
It's very hard to do but you can definitely do it.
@@RossDM None of theese slides works for me. I got the first piece peaking out about 3mm or so but there it got totally jammed. Had to use a flat screwdriver to remove it. Not a very satisfying way to solve it to say the least.
Unfortunately it it gets stuck in the same position on its way back (and I don't think tools would help to force it togeather). Seems like it has too small margins in the correct sequence.
This is not a level 4 in my book. I found both Chain and Square much easier.
@@feelfreefpv It's very tough to get them out, even when the 4 sphere pieces are lined up correctly, although it shouldn't need a screwdriver or force to remove it when they are lined up. Putting it together should be much easier because you can see if they are lined up correctly or not. Also make sure you're using the right side of the shell pieces (one hole is bigger than the other).
I agree with you on the rating, this is way harder than a lot of level 5's and 6's
Queasy, you may have the same issue as I. There are three pieces labeled 2 in my puzzle. There should be a number 1 that slides more easily out between the two 2:s.
It is possible even with my combination of pieces but some serious force may be needed.

Do you know how to glaze glass into a frame? Also, do you know a good metal detector to find the UFO that is now in the bushes under my window?
I'm an avid Hanayama puzzle collector, levels 3-6. I'm wondering if you recommend other puzzles from other companies that are not Hanayama. Thank you for your time.
I don't have many puzzles outside of Hanayama at the minute. Maybe once I've done all the Hanayama's I'll have a look at others.
I've watched about five videos on this so far. This video is by far the best, but even though I've identified the wedge with the lip or barrier and keep it on the bottom, I can't get it apart. A couple of times one of the wedges seems a little loose, and even came over the edge of the circle a bit, but nothing I do can make it go further. edit: I couldn't shake it out and eventually the only way to get it out was to use a screwdriver and pry it out. Definitely don7t like this puzzle.
Have you been able to do it again since getting it out with the screwdriver? I found it got easier the more I did it.
@@RossDM Yes. Now it's easy. It slips out with no problem. It was just that first time it really didn't want to come out of there. Each time since then has been a lot easier. Thank you.

@@supertricktroubleman8578 Once I did it a few times, it got easier, but it's still pretty difficult to get out. It's a bit too tight.

This puzzle is bogus. For reference, Coil and cake are level 4 as well. I spent 2.5 hours on it. The pieces dont just fall out. Its very finnicky. If it was smoother it would have been better. I also hate the red harring in a level 4 puzzle.
Haha I'm 100% with you. Level 4 is just wrong for this one. It's hard to separate even when you know what to do, that's a sure sign of a level 6 puzzle in my opinion.
I agree with what you say, but I believe Coil is level 3. That's a really fun puzzle though!

How much pressure are you applying on the first piece? I keep trying your way but I can only get it out by shaking it. And even then, it still takes forever sometimes.
A very small amount of pressure. It's more resting your finger on it and letting gravity do the work. The key is getting the edge of it over the lip of the shell piece first.

Oh dear... Is it getting the order right and sliding the first piece out that you're struggling with?
I had this puzzle for about two months, this is by far the roughest puzzle Hanayama has, I have done other level 6s with a ton more ease, I knew I was close to solving it, I knew it had something to do with the insides lining up perfect, but my mistake was thinking everything slid apart. Seeing this solved, does not make this puzzle any easier, and they are numbered on the inside it is super hard to see on the video, and even smaller in real life, but they are there. I thought they were not at first. Very tricky, very smart puzzle.
I agree this one is one of the hardest. I spent a good hour or two trying to do the same as you when solving it for the first time, slide it apart.

I know this is a super old video, but i cant get it! Ive been working at it for a week and im getting worried i dented the inside whwn i dropped it or something. Ive done all 3 combos and i only get a LITTLE wiggle room from one of them
Hi Calvin. I'd be very surprised if you've dented it from dropping it (unless 'dropping' actually means smashing it against a wall lol)
Here's what I'd say... firstly, there are 4 combos so there's a chance you've just not found the right one yet. It's more likely that the one with the little wiggle room is the right one, so double check you're trying to get it out of the bigger of the two sides.
Other than that, it's just a case of keep trying it. It's extremely hard and frustrating to do.

Was able to do it once but cannot get it apart again. Is it possible that I assembled it wrong? I did not use any force during re-assembly.
It is possible to assemble in the wrong order which does then require quite a bit more force, however, with how hard it is to get out anyway, I'd keep trying to separate it without force and focus on trying the different orders

after seeing the solution I cannot reproduce it.... I mean:
I look for the piece with the 2 large thingies and try to make the opposite piece fall off (with the logo looking towards the table!), but it does not... i tried the other 3 combinations but only 1 of them SLIGHTLY appears to be more loose than the others... did I break my puzzle (since I naively applied pressure on all 4 pieces, maybe too much) or do I need to try harder? 2 days and no clue whats wrong with my ufo!

Hi Canna, once you've got the right combination it's still quite hard to get the piece out. I'd suggest the piece that appears slightly more loose than the others is probably the right combination. Try going back to that combination and keep trying to slide that piece out.
I don't think you've broke your puzzle, I think it's just a very hard solution.

I dont think i have EVER been this f****** angry. I got nr 1 out easy, but number 2.... i have been stuck on nr 2 for the past 6hr. I woke up in the morning fuming because i went to bed fuming.

I discovered these puzzles not long ago and I am now addicted. I now have 16 that ranges from 1-6 in difficulty. I also got the Cryptex Da Vinci Code Mini Cryptex Lock Puzzle Boxes. I was a fan of the movie and it's pretty nice, but not hard to do. I'd recommend it as just a small safe lock box to keep small things in, yes someone could steal the whole thing. It's very heavy so it can be used as a self defense weapon. Anyway, I see your collection on the wall and that's what I want to do, but I've thrown away my boxes,
That's quite a collection already. Plenty more to go, and you can make it look good without the boxes.

Mine are labled differently i have 2 number 1 pieces and one number 2 piece the number 2 has one high border but the number ones are identical with no boarders what do i need to do!?
Wow, that's just a wrongly put together UFO puzzle by Hanayama.
It makes it easier for you because there'll be more options for orientations which allow the disassembly.
I've had someone comment previously saying they had the wrong combination of pieces too. I think theirs made it extremely hard to solve because there was no number 1 piece.
I've just noticed the image is better lit when you solve the puzzle. Have you bought more(better) lighting?
I haven't actually, it's all the same lighting.
One thing that has changed is the blue mat I now solve the puzzles on (used to be a white table).

dude love your videos but what kind of magic are you using to put that 3rd piece in, I've tried absolutely everything. not sure if it matters but I have one 3 two 2's and a 1 piece. i just cant get that 3rd piece in for the life of me.
Zero magic involved but it is very fiddly. Keep trying, you'll get it.
My method of solving it was throwing it on pavement until it broke open! It worked wayy better than this tutorial
I didn't read all of the comments as they all mostly seem to be the same. Is there any other method of solving this puzzle mentioned? I was able to take it apart and put it together 3 times using another method but it was difficult to recreate so I came searching once I started questioning my own method.

@@doubadia Not that I know of. I would imagine the other method is sliding the shell pieces apart whilst the 4 sphere pieces are in a specific position? I know that's quite do-able with 3 pieces still inside, not managed it with 4 though.
Unless it's a different method altogether?
I'm honestly about to engrave a number on each piece so I can keep track of the pieces while I'm attempting to take it apart.
I have about 20 other Hanayama puzzles and this one is total BS. Your video is a massive help though. But like the comment beneath mine, the 1 piece will move a bit, but the 2, 2 and 3 pieces move out of alignment too easily, locking 1 from coming out. I hate this puzzle. I do not recommend buying.
EDIT: I think I have a dud. I just got the first piece out, and lo and behold it's labeled 2. Not 1. I'm ready to pack it in and put this in the bin.
I tried it for five minutes, got frustrated and then threw it away. Problem solved.

This puzzle was given to me to solve and I've been working on it for the better part of a day and I can get the lip to drop but nothing else happens. I rotated this thing at least 200 times and nothing works. I'm about to do what another guy said and take a flathead screwdriver to this thing to get the first piece out because it refuses to move. The person who gave it to me has taken it apart but he may have not put it back together properly making it next to impossible to take a part again
It's possible it was put back wrong but unlikely. Once you got the lip over the edge did you use the technique I used the video? Even with the wrong set up it can work.
Ross -i cannot see the wedges like you show in the video--can't get the 4 pieces apart far enough to see which piece is the right one to coax out--tried for hours !!!
If you can't see which one is which it'll make it tougher but still do-able. You'll have to try more options for the right combination. Instead of the 4 options, you'll have 16 (I think).

I realized that the hole on the "UFO" side is slightly bigger than the other side. Idk if you mentioned that or not but once I realized that it worked.
Yep, that's probably the most important thing to find/know when solving this one. I mention it at the 1:00 minute mark. Well done on solving it!

I’ve tried this puzzle for 10 days and haven’t got it. I’m so close to giving up and leaving on my shelf forever. I’ve tried EVERYTHING to take it apart but it won’t. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but it’s got to the point where I think it’s broken since it doesn’t come apart. Can anyone feel my pain? Or am I just dumb.
Everyone who has every tried the UFO puzzle feels your pain. It's extremely tough...
I'd suggest just leaving it for a day or two then come back to it and keep trying to slide that piece out by trying the four combinations.
You'll solve it eventually, just keep at it.
RossDM - Puzzle Solving how far out will the 1 piece slide out? Will it be almost out or a millimeter or 2 because I’ve gotten it to just barely slide out but won’t come out.

This is an incredibly tough one to solve. The only thing I can say is to keep trying to get the 4 pieces lined up correctly then just keep working on sliding that first piece out.
It just takes persistence the first time you solve it.

Ive had this damn puzzle for three years, i still cant get it open. I give up.
I have watched many different videos of solving this puzzle, and I know how to identify the different pieces, and how they are supposed to come out, but I still can't get that first piece loose enough to come out. I normally have no trouble solving the level 6 hanayama puzzles, and this one is only supposed to be a level 4, but I would rate it as level 5, and believe mine has abnormaly tight tolerances and can't loosen the first piece by gravity alone, and needs to be pushed from the other side.
It's super tough to do. First thing is to just keep trying it and tinkering with it slightly.
I once got the first piece out when it was in the wrong orientation so it is possible to do if the position is wrong. I've also had someone comment saying they had a wrong set up and had 3 piece 2's in there. it's very unlikely but it could be the same for you.
@@RossDM I've identified the #3 part, but of the other 3 pieces, 2 won't budge at all, and the last one will only come out about 1/8" and then only if I push it from the other side. I even tried turning the ball around so the #3 was the other side and the same results. This was with the other 3 pieces in each of the 3 possible configuration.
Now I just wonder how the hell they got it together.

Piece literally gets to the edge and doesn’t come out I’ve been trying for like an hour and I swear I’ve never been this pissed off
I’ve tried every fucking way possible it just doesn’t work. I have never thrown something for far in the woods in my life before
Lol. I've had enough with this puzzle. That's why I'm here looking up the solution. With no sound though. Lol.
No way. I was trying to slide the exterior oieces with the ball inside, having it 'cut in half'. Which did work for some point, the exterior pieces were sliding, having half of a ball each, anx i almost got there but....obviously it wasnt the correct solution....oh well....i am satisfied with myself having thought of a solution like that despite the fact the it didnt work. It sounded rational....anw.thnx for the video. I thought that there was something wrong with the puzzle.
If you watch my video of solving this for the first time you'll see I tried exactly the same as you for well over an hour.
It's actually possible to slide apart when you've got just one of the ball pieces out. It's a bit fiddly though.

Actually i was "forced" (kinda) to see the solution due to i've come across some puzzles that had either tight or loose parts. I was really struggling to find all the possible solutions but because of their parts being tight, nothing was happeng. Thus i was forced to see their solution.
So i feared that that was the case with the UFO puzzle as well.

@@RossDM i was referring to puzzles from other manufacturers. They either had tight or loose parts. Thats why i got the suspicion that something might be wrong with the UFO as well....
Oh well. I ordered thecylinder and the infinity by hanayama. I will not see any videos having their solutions....
Btw, i am trying to solve a puzzle box and nothing sees to be happening....😂

Everytime I move the piece to the lip the others rearrange when I wiggle it
Yeah, that makes it tougher than it already is, trying to keep pieces in certain positions.

Hmm... the only thing I can suggest is to keep trying the 4 different combinations until you find one that has more movement in it, then just keep trying get that piece over the lip of the shell piece.
It's really hard to do so it can take ages to take apart.

I can't get the number 1 back in 😫 both numbers 2 are lined up and it won't slide in.
Finally got it through. I'm thinking when I put the 2 number 2 in there it got flipped with he high side. I I redid it and it slid in smoothly
This is so dumb. Great explanation, but this is literally just up to chance. You HAPPEN to have them all in the correct orientation and HAPPEN to drop the piece out the bottom instead of pulling it apart like 99% of people will assume, THEN you get to look inside and figure it out. I had to look up how to solve it because I was making progress pulling it apart, but the inside piece rotated like around the outside piece (which I thought was the solution), but it seized up and I thought I broke it. Turns out nope, it's just an incredibly ridiculous chance "puzzle." What a waste of money
Oh, AND that's IF you were holding it up with the UFO piece on the bottom when you HAPPENED to get the correct orientation. That's soooo stupid.
@@StealthyDead Haha I think a lot of people share your frustrations... this isn't one of my favourites either, it's not like it can be worked out like most other Hanayama puzzles.
How do people do this?!! I did what he did and still haven’t gotten open!
I can't stress enough how tough and frustrating this one is to do.
All I can suggest is to make sure you've got the right side of the UFO and to keep trying that move to get the first piece out with those 4 possible set ups.

We all struggle with this one but you'll get it eventually. Promise.

That's the hardest part. Firstly, there's no real way of knowing if you've got each piece in the right place.Secondly, for the wiggle itself, it just takes practise.
I'm afraid the only advice I can give is to keep trying each of those possible orientations.

You can open up the corners slightly and see the piece that has the big border on each side. Hope this helps!

@@gilbertogonzalezjr8193 It's a tough one. I imagine you're having no luck with getting the first bit out... All I can say is just keep trying those combinations and sliding that first piece out.
The one I have has a bigger piece than there should be I’ve tried and it is stuck to something impossible to do
One of the pieces in the middle is bigger than the others because it has a lip around it. Is that what you mean?

Oh getting the first piece out is fun, but trying to get a 2nd piece out GOOD LUCK the (BEEPING) thing shift all over the god damn place and its a (BEEPING) pain in the ass to get the 3rd piece out!! Its worst then trying to get the 4th one to drop out! The 4th one is easy then it's a absolute ass trying to get one more piece out!

Some god awful way i put my sphere back together wrong. I somehow forced the number 1 piece in 3rd instead of last. Idk how but finally i got it open somehow getting a number 2 out first.
Yeah, I've heard it is possible to get out without being in the right position. Well done on getting it back out, it's hard enough getting out in the perfect position!

Have you followed the steps? It can be very tough, especially first time.

I dont know how this puzzle rank the fourth place , its a tricky one but no way its the top 4 hardest , you just need to manage to pull one piece out and then very easy to assemble and disassemble it, all my friend saw me put the first part out and they all can do it , its nothing hard to follow like the Rotor or even the Helix in level 5 .
I rate the difficulty based on how hard it was for me to find the solution first time around, without any help or seeing someone else solve it, not how hard the steps are to go through.
@@RossDM oh I see , thanks for your comment but I think you are amazing solve every puzzle and some puzzle solve within an hour, some level 5 and 6 took me more than 6 hours

I’ve been trying since Christmas to get this open and after watching so many videos over and over my brain is done. It has been months and I can’t even get one to even slightly wiggle no matter how much I try. Literally my hands have became red from trying for hours straight. Sorry to be over dramatic I’m just over it lol
Haha I like your determination. All I can say is that this is one that requires a lot of patience to separate first time around and a lot of practise to be able to do it consistently.
Having said that, I know of someone who had a faulty UFO which had the wrong set of pieces making up the sphere.
I'd keep going though, it was still possible for him to separate his UFO puzzle.
RossDM - Puzzle Solving Alrighty, thank you lol. I have taken a bit of a break but I think I’m going to get back into the habit of carrying it around with me. It gives me something to do and hopefully one of these time while fumbling with it I’ll make some progress. Thanks for getting back to me though!

From what i hear, there's a very small possibility it was assembled wrong but it's just a very tough puzzle to get apart anyway.
I think I messed up because this is my first time buying one of these puzzles and it's level 4
This is very tough one to start with. Even knowing the solution, this is one oft he hardest to actually solve.

Make sure you've put them back in in the right order. Then make sure each piece is lined up correctly so the last piece has room to slide back in.

All 10 of the videos I’ve watched, you all do the same thing to get it out, i just can’t do it, WILL NOT come out, so i got it out with a hammer and just threw it away. This one wasn’t fun
