Progress on my CABIN by the Pond and a QUILT! #9

- Here is an update on my Cabin project, a bit of a disjointed video as I was pretty unwell for most of November so I was unable to film the rapid progress that Ant was making despite the awful weather, rain, cold, wind ..... nothing seems to daunt him. You can find him on Instagram as Ants_countrylife - pop over there and say hi!
In this video you can spot the moment when I should have taken to my bed and stopped filming. you'll be able to spot it no bother!
But the cabin is not far from being finished. Work has started on installing the electrics, I am waiting for the window and the cladding for the outside and then it will be mostly complete. I decided to make a curtain for the compost toilet and I am keeping warm in The Last Homely House making that. So many plans for how I will use this cabin!
But in other news, the garden has been having a lot of attention from my Garden Team, Adam and Arran from Heritage Country Gardening, to put the whole garden to bed for the winter and do all the end of year maintenance that is needed . They also helped sort out the drainage around the pond area and planted a lot of bulbs. I'm really looking forward to spring when we may see some signs of them!
Deer in the adjoining field, Eileen keeping everyone on their toes and wild birds enjoying the seeds and nuts I fill up on a daily basis!

Oh Kate, what a lovely place you are creating. My own Mom, who taught me everything I know about gardening, preserving, sewing and quilting for the family is no longer able to teach us due to the horrible condition of dementia. I’ve been slowly losing her over the past 10 years and your videos are a breath of her in my ears and my heart. My daughter, who is getting married this summer on the farm, recently came to me and said, I just feel a signature quilt as the wedding registry would be a great tribute to NANA and that we sew it together afterwards. What a family heirloom that will be! I strive to create that sort of family heritage culture. Thank you so much for inspiring our family. Thank you for pouring yourself into what you love to do and sharing it all with us.
You left me in tears because I completely understand what dementia can do to a family. My mom passed 2 years ago and I miss her terribly.

Hi Kate. I must say, I love this garden channel. This was amazing. This whole wooden quilt thing is so you. I love how Ant came up with this. What an absolute legend Ant is. He could have just done the engineering/structural side of the cabin and left as is. But no, he taps into creativity. Clearly to him a house isn't just a house, it's a home.

The cabin is wonderful and the barn quilt was such a good idea. I love that you snuck some log cabin blocks into the front wall as well. Very excited to see the progress and can’t wait for more videos from the pond as the seasons change.

What a cozy cabin! You even thought of a compost toilet, with a view no less! I love your "quilt" wall. I don't know how you come up with such cute ideas Kate. I noted when looking out the cabin door, you can see your house in the back ground. So, from your upstairs bedroom window you can look down upon your cabin. It gives me joy just imagining what pleasure you will have this spring and on enjoying your pond.

I just love how the cabin is coming together. It's going to be snug and cozy once you get heat. The veranda will be lovely to sit out on when the weather will allow. I'm excited to see the progress. ❤😊

Ant reminds me so much of my dear Grandfather, also a woodworker extraordinaire, who, like Ant, would fuss for hours over little projects like your wooden 'quilt', just to please my Gram - or whomever it was for. Are you aware that some forms of colour blindness can be corrected with specialised glasses? What a joy it would be to know that Ant could enjoy the colours of a sunset with you from your porch and for him to enjoy the colours of the flowers around the pond and in your garden, and what a great reward for all of Ant's hard work and kindness to you. Ant's cheerfulness and kindness shines through and is matched by your caring nature too.

Just today, earlier this morning, I checked the site to see if I had missed a post. I hadn’t so I looked at #8 again. I took a short nap, and when I woke up, surprise! there was #9. Love the wooden quilt wall. Thank you for the quick glance at Agnes. She is so adorable and we are getting to watch her grow up.
Lovely! I reminisced of when my husband and I built our home and he slid off the shed roof in the rain and landed on a pile of scrap wood. He had quilt pinwheel bruises on his leg…your idea was so much better. A wall will last and be beautiful for a very long time. I am so sorry you were under the weather, it is going around for sure here on our side of the (big) pond as well. May we all heal for Christmas. ❤ Thank you for the lovely update.

Oh, Kate! The little cabinn is delightful! I don't know if the tradition exists in the UK, but in the US, farmers (as well as others) make wooden painted quilt blocks to hang on barns and other buildings. I hope you'll put a barn quilt on your cabin.

I think it’s brilliant you went for a roof on the veranda, you’ll be able to be outside much more. Ant is a great guy, he’s so patient. Tradesman like him are worth their weight in gold.

Mono chromatics only see grey tones, my son has the same. The things we don't see as they focus on movements. My son sees better in the dark too. Different abilities 😉 It becomes lovely 🥰

2:00 I know this little cottage is in your private garden, but consider a small roll up curtain for this window... as you never know when you'll have a surprise visitor😲😲.
Consider making the fabric similar to the dotted sewing pouch with the lime green lining, that you made and hanging it high so as not to obscure your beautiful view. But low enough to reach whilst still seated. 😲😲
Quilted fabric curtains will help keep the heat in during the winter and cut down on drafts. 😮. 💖🌞🌵😷
