    I just realised I forgot to mention something in the video but it's too late now lol. If you win the scenario Maxis planned for you to be rewarded with a windmill that would act as a power generator for future storms. Numenor uploaded the windmill object and a bunch of other 'lost & found' objects on modthesims back in 2005~ also I think it was brought back in Mansion and Garden stuff for a different purpose, but I've never played that stuff pack.

    Someone should remake this mod. clean up the scenario so the power actually does go out consistantly across all devices, and incorporate it as a somewhat rare occurance during the Seasons thunderstorms.

    • @rain51dbb
      @rain51dbb Před 2 lety +39

      That's exactly what I was thinking! Make it rare and only during thunderstorms.

    • @ovinedreamer1451
      @ovinedreamer1451 Před 2 lety +18

      The power was actually consistent here. Landline phones still work when the power is out (though I suspect many people are too young to remember that), those little radios were battery powered in the past and when you lose power to your fridge you can definitely still open it and take food out. Your fridge not having power doesn't make the food instantly go off after all.

    • @parrot998
      @parrot998 Před 2 lety +4

      @@ovinedreamer1451 Well yeah, but there are tons of objects added post BG, and not all of them would be effected if the scenario was used as is. would be weird to be able to do kareoke or use an arcade cabinet during a power outage.

    @Juskaey Před 2 lety +166

    Actually, landlines work even when the power's out! I remember having plenty of power outages as a kid in the 90s and still being able to call my parents. Specifically, corded phones will work but cordless will not. They have a separate power source from the house because they're grounded hence "landline." And I guess the fridge still "works" because it's still keeping the food cold and so you can still actually feed your sims since it's 7 hours long.
    Was fun to see the scenario brought to life hahaha it's unfortunate that they didn't finish it and bring it back for Seasons release.

    • @CalipersandTongs
      @CalipersandTongs  Před 2 lety +23

      When I heard about it I was hoping they might have created some way to turn popular challenge rules on/off so you can't do things that are against the challenge rules gameplay wise until you unlock certain things (not sure if that would be possible though.) I remember back when I was trying to do the apocalypse challenge in The Sims 3 and there are so many restrictions it was really hard keeping track of all the rules and I messed up a few times I think.
      The current Sims 4 scenarios seem kind of basic (like getting a million Simoleans,) but maybe they'll come up with more creative ones later.

Also - the rain was scrapped because EA/Maxis couldn't make it stop raining inside houses, so when this happened here it was expected, but not intended anyways.

    The rain was apparently cut for 2 reasons: they couldn't stop it from raining inside and it caused really bad lag (back then 128MB graphics card was towards the top end of what they had to support). The mod you tried just makes the rain object buyable (also in the mod description the instructions are to place it in the middle of the lot so the rain appears centred on the lot) the mod doesn't cause the power outage itself, but spawning the old rain can trigger the scenario. There were a number of mods which enabled the old rain and they all can trigger the scenario (ones I can think of were a weather totem by Simslice I think, a Tesla coil by someone at MTS, and I believe Carrigon also made a weather spawner object, but I don't remember finding it).

    I feel like with the fridge the effects of a seven hour power outage would be quite mild - fridges are designed to keep in the cold and only spend a small amount of time actually running.
    Now the stoves and especially the microwaves and toaster ovens, that would be interesting. Gas stoves could work while electric wouldn't.

    woah... so weird how i was thinking about the power outage scenario and mod today, then i get the notification for this video :ooo
    i’ve been digging around in the objects.package file recently too because i’m hoping to do a video on pretty much all the scrapped bhavs, bcons, and possibly text strings that still exist in the files. from what i’ve personally seen, the power outage scenario seems the most complete out of the scrapped bhavs so honestly it wouldn’t surprise me if the modder did just extract everything as it was and maybe just finessed it a tiny bit where necessary.
    as for lightning - all the bhavs i found referencing lightning always mention hot tubs, so either it was never finished or it was just reserved for hot tubs.
    also, there are definitely more references to breakfast in bed in the bhavs and bcons ^^
    the text strings are SO funny! when you mentioned misc. text strings i hoped the weird headmaster calls would be mentioned.
    unrelated to the bhav stuff, but tank is scripted to always crash johnny’s birthday party... except this event can also be triggered by having johnny throw any party. that’s most likely why he rocked up uninvited hahaha
    love videos like this!! ☺️

    • @CalipersandTongs
      @CalipersandTongs  Před 2 lety +7

      That sounds like a cool video idea. I find the early development of The Sims 2 very interesting/nostalgic for some reason especially all the screenshots floating around with the old lighting and ui (which is weird really because I've never played the version of the game they're from lol.)
      I was initially planning on just covering the power outage scenario but then got distracted by the text strings haha. There are a bunch of funny ones and the headmaster ones were great.
      Ah wow, I wonder why they removed breakfast in bed. Maybe they just didn't have time to get it to work. I feel like it would have fit pleasure sim's aspiration lol.
      I didn't notice that about Tank. I'd actually played that version of The Smith family before and sent them on vacation for another video which is why Jenny has a tan in this video but I don't think I threw a party before that (I don't play that version of Strangetown properly so it's pretty much a YT set lol.) So that's probably why.

    Landline phones were connected to phone cables, and while that particular phone's base is likely electrical, to charge the phone, the phone would have stayed charged enough for hours, not needing power, until it lost its charge. There are still landline phones that exist that do not rely on electrical power, but most people do not have landlines, but cell phones (which also will work until their batteries die). However, the large stereo should not have worked, but the portable one could have run on battery power.
    The reason why weather was not implemented in the basegame was because they could not figure out how to keep the rain/snow from falling inside the houses. In order to likely obtain the highest score, the sims wants would likely need filling, similar to an outing. The more sims you fullfill wants for, the higher the score. I wonder though, if they planned on sims rerolling wants, similar to going to a community lot?

    I recently went back to playing TS2 and wish I knew about modding/programming so I could make an Off the grid mod. As far as I know there isn't one. I'd really like to have it for for my apocalypse challenge. The best you can do right now is not pay your bills.
    As others have said landline phone work even when the powers is out, but due to the risk of shock by lightning during a thunder storm you really shouldn't talk on them, although I don't think sims could get electrocuted that way, but technically if the storm is raging the sims shouldn't be on the landline phone.

      Yeah I think it would have been better if I put it further back on the lot then it probably would have covered the whole lot instead of stretching onto the other side of the road lol.

    Someone make a Kickstarter for putting this stuff back in, and I'll literally put in $250. But you have to have modding experience, cuz I ain't waiting three years

    Scenarios in the sims 4 are nothing like the sims 2 ones. I will never forgive EA/Maxis for naming them scenarios. They are just dumb ui stuff and they called it a day like its something new

      Since this video I have tried a few and I found they were either fairly repetitive or too easy.

    I liked the video, I know your ad's are skippable but I thought it was hilarious one of them was 28 minutes long & about religion 🤣...How is that relevant in the current context ? 🤔 and who wouldn't skip that ? ... I guess I'm just a hill of beans, never truly meant to understand 😞

      Oh wow I've never gotten a 28 minute advert before on CZcams that is insane. The video wasn't even that long (surprisingly for me lol.) I've heard other CZcamsrs mention that they get a lot of weird ads that are unrelated to the content before though (and sometimes completely contradicts it.) You can't control what ads they pick though. I feel like they should allow you to select from topics or something. I've never tried to check because I think if you watch your own ads it's probably against terms of service or something.

    The sims 4 thing it's cuz of mods, I had to take all my mods out and update em 😭

    • @CalipersandTongs
      @CalipersandTongs  Před 2 lety +1

      Ah man that's annoying... That's the one drawback with the regular Sims updates. Not sure I can be bothered doing that for this though lol (I have so much cc although most of it shouldn't effect gameplay.) Maybe if I hear about a really great scenario or something I'll try updating stuff.

      @@CalipersandTongs I hateeee updating my mods too 😭😭 but yeah tbh the scenarios are not fun at all 🤷‍♀️ I'm waiting for Modded Scenarios tbh, modders make everything better 😂

    The sims is just like Animal Crossing. Both franchises water down old games.
