Building an awesome chicken coop-Part 1. Hen house. Chicks in the mail, and meeting our dogs.

  • Building a chicken house/coop for our new chicks! We milled some wood with our Woodland mills HM122 and raided our stash of leftover materials to see if we could build a nice new chicken coop. Introducing our chicks to our two dogs. Hopefully they will get along so we can free range them at least part of the time. We are trying out sapphire gem chicks and black australorps. Both are supposed to be good egg layers.
    Be sure and check out our log cabin build videos and come visit the cabin. It is listed in Airbnb. www.airbnb.com/h/old-bear-rid...

Being a contractor I'm sure you know you end up with lots of leftover's. I had some Hardie backer laid out for I don't know how many years. And it got wet everytime it rained. I picked it up and looked at it. It looked brand new. Still had its strength. Yea you need to seal joints. It would seem to me when you're chicks scratch it would tear vinyl and once you get a hole started? I put it in mine and throw pine shavings on it. And it does what I knew it would do.

      @natureartgirl  Před rokem +1

      Hi Tom, yes definitely a lot easier 🤣 that was one day, plus some time sawing the wood. I think it will take about a week’s worth of work to finish. The rock is the corner post for our garden fence. You just drive a metal post into the ground, then cut a length of fence and make it into a cylinder around the post. Then you just gradually fill it up with rock. Good way to use up random shaped rocks and pretty easy to do.

      We used true 2”x4” lumber that we milled ourselves, but purchased 2x4’s would work fine. If you live in a heavy snow load area you might want larger lumber for the rafters. The front boards are 8’ tall and the back are 6’8” tall. If you want a steeper roof you could go shorter on the back. The hutch part has 4x4’s for the corner posts. 😊👍

      Hi! It is 8’ wide by 18’ long. It would actually be easier to make it 20’ long but that would not work in the space we had. 😊👍

      Hoovers hatchery online. Not too many places have the sapphire gems. The black australorps are pretty common though. We have been really happy with both kinds 😊

      It is a wood preservative and stain. Outlast Q8 log oil. You can get it online at westernloghomesupply.com. It is really good stuff and easy to use.

      We haven’t drawn out any detailed plans. We’ve been crazy busy lately. But it’s not too hard to figure out. Your dimensions would be somewhat different than ours since we used our own rough cut wood. It’s actual 2”x4” boards. If we get some time we will try to draw up some. We’ve had a lot of requests for them. 😊

    Remember chicken math is real. I figured 6 chicken would be a good number for my wife and I. We must’ve used chicken math. Because Apparently 1+5 = 28 🤷🏽

      So true! We only really wanted 8 or 10, but the minimum order for specialty chicks we wanted was 15!😂😂So far though, it has been worth it. We are currently getting 10 or 11 eggs a day from our 14 hens. Super happy with that since they are still very young and we are in the low light season of the year. They are also very sweet natured birds😊

      @@natureartgirl yeah you are worth it. I have more eggs than I can use for sure. I even have my dog eating boiled eggs. My cat wants no part of it. Oh well I tried.
      Tip: mix grind up egg shells with fermented chicken feed. It’s a way to give the chicken back calcium. They love it.

    The first thing you should’ve done was build a couple of sawhorses! Then you wouldn’t have to stand on your head to cut the lumber.

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  Před 11 měsíci

      So true! Our sawhorses were busy holding up up pile of lumber that we milled. But it definitely would have made the job easier if we had taken the time to build a couple more😂👍👍

      Not right now. We haven’t had time to draw them up. But if you are fairly handy, it is not hard to figure out by the videos. We tried to make it pretty detailed. We will try to get some plans drawn up whenever we get some time😊

    You guys need some saw horses. My back is killing just watching you. We have a sawmill as well. But it is a misnomer when you say the lumber is free. You had to take the trees down, then mill it, and then build . None of which is free. There is cost attached to each thing.

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  Před 10 měsíci

      So true! We did get some of these trees from a local tree service, so it was less work than normal. But it still is a lot of work milling the lumber. We have more time than money though, so it is cost effective for us. We also like being able to make whatever size we need😊

      It’s the only way to get certain types. There are no hatcheries near here. Other than buying from individuals. Even if you hatch them yourself, there can be losses due to them crowding together or other factors. Just facts of life.

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, it is sad to lose one for sure! But this kind of chicks are not available anywhere around here. We wanted to try them because they are supposed to be good layers and friendly. We had chickens years ago and the white leghorns we had were really stupid and did not get along very well. They picked on each other all the time. These girls are super sweet natured and will even let us pick them up and pet them. Great layers too!
