  • Correction: Andre recounts that Steve Seward was killed at Bangala Dam with Boet Nel (where Torty King was severely wounded). It was Steve Seymour who died on that tragic day not Steve Seward (who is alive and well;) Apologies!

Hi Hannes, Many thanks for all your interviews and the short stories about the Rhodesian War. With regards to the Parachute Operations during this conflict I must correct Andre Scheepers on his recollections regarding the navigation of HALO drops. On each and every HALO drop the Navigation to the target was done by an Oficer Parachute Jumping Instructor. Andre would not be able to observe his jump spot from the cockpit of the Dakota he would be lucky to find out which country he was over by looking out of the cocpit windows in the Dak at 20,000 ft. In addition I doubt that the Pilots would have permitted an Army Meat bomb giving them instructions on where to point the aircraft at 20,000 ft. During the Rhodesian war every for every operational parachute drop, both static line and HALO it was the responsability of a Parachute Jumping Instructor to ensure the parachutists arrived on the Battlefield ready for their task. I am loath to correct Andre Scheepers on his recollections but I think this point must be made. Regards Derek de Kock Sqn Ldr OC Parachute Training School

I believe he told that story in one of his early interviews. It's the most unbelievable story with 2 movies, if Hollywood would believe it

Hello, would you mind trying to interview my grandfather he was in Rhodesia, C company and he did his training in Danie Teron Combat school , he did ambulance services, he is an engineer and he says he mostly drove trucks but he also told me about how they would sleep in their fox holes and keep watch of their area and they would tie strings to eachother to alert eachother of enemies in the area without saying a word.

I'd really like to hear him talk about it more but I am a woman so he shares more detail with my nephew than me who shares it with me hahahahaha but he is a amazing person and I'd love to hear more about his experience but please be careful I don't want him to get ptsd. His body language closes off when we talk about it. I think he saw a lot more than he'd admit.

Andre, it is gratifying on several levels to hear you eventually state the factual dates and to a degree, the actual events of this particular operation (16:40) , not least for the sake of the surviving relatives of those murdered in both Viscount atrocities.
You will recall that in March 2015 you claimed that you 'try and live by example and believe it is sinful to lie' and you went on to state that this operation, in which 5 ZIPRA terrorists were slotted, occurred in Feb 1979 and that afterwards 'the Helicopters arrived to tell us we had accounted for the ‘missile gang’' (see Viscount Controversy; A Soldier Speaks) when in fact none of this was accurate. This was either a mistaken, coerced or deliberate attempt by you to corroborate Keith Nell's false assertion (in his book 'Viscount Down') that this operation occurred three days after the Viscount Umniati (Flight 827) was shot down on the the 12th February 1979 and that the 5 enemy culled were unquestionably responsible for shooting the missiles that downed either one or both of these civilian aircraft solely on the basis of an Urungwe TTL Headman's hearsay. This sadly mislead some if not all relatives of the Umniati's murder victims in particular, to take some comfort in the belief the deaths of their relatives had been avenged in someway, when in fact they had been deceived.
I knew Nell's narrative in regard to this operation, particularly the Feb 1979 date, to be fictional immediately it was published and brought to my attention and that your subsequent documented support for Nell's false timeline and narrative was either misguided or falsified. This is because I attended the same 1RSASR 'Short Course' Selection as the then Lt Richard Stannard (SScouts) which started in the second half of November 1978, after he had returned from the potential 1RSASR Officers selection exercise in the Urungwe led by Darrel Watt and which you speak of above. It was never Feb. 1979. You may well recall that after you all arrived back in Karoi from the Urungwe , Stannard departed for Old Cranbourne to join the 'Short Course' selection I mention above just before you guys deployed back into the Uringwe again to execute the short operation you begin to describe at 16:40 .
All said and done, this unsavoury controversy in which you became embroiled and which was primarily perpetuated by Keith Nell, should not detract from or in anyway denigrate your immense military contribution to Rhodesia's war effort , a contribution which I for one, will continue to respect.
