You really dive in deep to my favorite music, and have continually blown my mind with your theory. You're without a doubt, my fave teacher, ever! And can't stress enough how under appreciated what you do, is. Your really doing something great, Michael. And doing it better than anyone, today. I really appreciate your work, amd can't wait to see what direction you decide to take your work in, in the future. I will continue my support. No matter what you may decide to do. You're really special, and seem to be a hell of a great guy.

    Well done!!!You've managed to serve up more knowledge and understanding about music than all these other note for note copy cats. Up until now it's basically been trying to memorize songs and scales. That's just BS. Every one of your lessons provides something special I can apply to my music going forward. That's a great investment of time for anyone looking to learn this or any instrument.I watched this w a friend who has been playing 40 yrs and has never done these youtube lessons (old school), and he was blown away by your approach. In short... Thank you for taking so much time to put these out there. Greatly appreciated!MUCH continued success to you.

    I'm going from memory only and I'm 63 , so apologies up front if I am wrong with any facts...I read here that Greg had the song and the band passed on it initially....I just goggized that and it was released by the ABB on their first album " Idlewild South" in 1970... Greg's version ( minor ) was on "Laid Back" solo album, released in 1973...So I'm confused here, but moving to my original reason for posting...
    I was pretty much introduced to the band about the time the minor version was hitting radio...And I've always loved that version much more than the bands version...And that's a hard thing to even admit to as a life long devotee to this band....Anyway, Greg's version from the gate is guitar driven but backed more closely by his keyboard right from the intro...I mean, the acoustic track could almost be the " D" chord , surrounded the keyboard in the first 4 notes of the song...( Forgive me, I learned by ear only)...But the whole song is altered from those first 4 notes and he really made it much better IMHO....
    Don't know where it charted, but I remember it was on the air constantly, and to a 13 year old kid, blew my socks off...But you can't really make the connection here since you used his live version to compare it with the band's version..The studio version would be a better example IMHO...But hey, my hands won't even let me pick anymore..And ive watched a lot of your tutorials and love the way you teach stuff... Hopefully, with more physical therapy, my fingers will let me pull my gear out of my closet one day soon....Thanks for keeping my thirst to play alive !

    Hi Michael, thank you for your really interesting insights. Good fun to watch. I like your hear and feel approach. Who cares about exact note by note if you cover Jam band Songs anyway ..
    Here are my two bits regarding Midnight Rider:
    I have been working on Allmann Songs for a while (I predominantly do Slide stuff in Open Tunings). It seems as if Gregg composed most of his older Songs on guitar (I think he started out as a guitar player), and hereby seems to have used Open G tuning sometimes. There are a few great vids on CZcams in which he plays "Come and Go Blues" by himself in Open G. I was trying for figure our Midnight Rider for my Jug/Jam Band and noticed that the acoustic versions are different from the electric versions, just as you did. Gregg plays acoustic guitar on the Austin City Limits and Live at the Beacon versions. And I am Pretty sure he has the guitar in Open G, although the song is of course in D. So, he plays Open G, and thus plays the D chord in the open position, and then he does something very interesting at the end of the verse: instead of Gm7 - C as in the electric versions, he does G7 - Gm7 (or rather Bflat) - C. The sequence G7 - Bflat - C is very simple Open G, so something for the lazy guitar player. I like the acoustic versions better for their swampier feel, so that's what we are now going with.
    Thanks again and I will tune in again...Cheers from Munich, Germany...

    • @frankrussell4664
      @frankrussell4664 Před 4 lety

      Martin, you are absolutely correct on the Open G and chord sequence of G7 - Bb - C at the end of the verse. And yes very simple, yet not cliche, just like all of Come And Go Blues - -no one Open G cliche in the song.

    Well you're awesome great observation I was wondering about that too I really really love the Greg Allman version cuz I'm two more darker and more hunting things most of the time and that dark intro really I just really feel in a dark place in my soul. I heard it up not too long ago is was going up I go to the methadone clinic by 5 in the morning. I have to have something to control my pain otherwise I'll get myself into trouble I just live in a lot of pain as hell. Back in 1990s just all these people I knew and all these friends and even my cousin she recently died in a fire. So many other people have died drugs and cancer and only 43 and it feels like most of the world is dead friends acquaintances, rock stars. It's crazy. I just really feel this on even just talking about it and thinking about it and you can be in here listen to this musical genius here who has finally called it out and is putting it down thanks brother yeah both versions are cool but the deeper version down to your soul version that's that's what you got to have Gregg Allman version but it's too bad about the whole band and all these other great bands that are gone and will never be again as even more today sad feeling nothing about the world and is Gregg Allman version is like the perfect soundtrack today dark areas of my life and for a lot of people feel the same.

    I'm only half way through this...,but my first thought is this: since there is no stated third in the opening and main acoustic guitar riff, you have suspended a major - minor center and only have a modal "D" feel - which is a tried and true folk blues feel...,allowing the play for the vocal to slide in and out of the flatted third. Otis Redding comes to mind, although I think many solo Delta and Texas blues players used this technique. Actually, I really like your approach to this analysis....,

    there are not two versions. both do the same key change. D -> F ( Dminor as relative minor... the Bb and C are the 4 and 5 chords of F). Only difference in the second version is that they accentuate minor licks over the D major chord...no surprise here, we all play minor blues licks over a major chords all the time because it sounds good. That all that is going on here. That being said this video is old. Im sure Michael has realised this by now.

    Your over all analysis of the basic tonal harmony of the song is correct; however, in blues it is common to use a mixolydian scale that incorporates both the major and minor aspects... this is what you have identified as the minor sound in the song ... Some blues tunes incorporate a Dorian mode, but I do not think this is the case here. As for the later version that Greg uses in his acoustic performances with the band, I believe this is probabley the original version of the song when it was written. If you use correct drop D tuning, you will get that characteristic sound at the beginning. Listen to the Austin City Limits version of the song and you will see what I mean

    • @SamK2525
      @SamK2525 Před 6 lety

      Everything's basically jam territory, its R&R. I think it's way more important to show people concepts and let them explore within wiggle room. I can do great versions of Wind Cries Mary and Hey Joe but whenever I read tabs i realized over time how much I've adapted it to suit my style.
      Hendrix was the same, it's amazing how much live versions would change over time. Hey Joe was a perfect example, he seemed to use that as a practice song and play all five chords with different shapes in each verse. For an intermediate or advanced beginner, that song was what helped me understand the flexibility of modern music and how much room for interpretation there is and how to play chords in several different ways.
      The guy who asked the question about not being able to use barre chords cause his fingers were too short, Check out Hey Joe tab, he played an A chord in at least 3 different ways. Hendrix rarely used bar chords and I hear he had really long fingers.
