Thanks. Some great info about how to win at college. I also think that having “grit” is often the main ingredient needed to successfully achieve your goals.

Like hearing an on-the-way to FI story.

Really surprised that scholarships can transfer to your spouse. The ones I received you had to give the paperwork to the school finance office so they could collect the funds and apply towards tuition.

I wish there wasn’t such a focus on college.
I run a non profit that does job placement assistance. When we help a client who has 6 months of work experience or has gone to a trade school, that person is working in a week or two with an average income of 60-80k.
When we have a client who attended college. On any level. Associates degree, bachelors degree or has a masters, that client becomes a 6 month project to even find a barely above minimum wage job. Then add student loan debt and we run into people with degrees who don’t want to make more money because they lose their loan repayment waivers. We work with a little over 700 employers. Almost all refuse to even interview anyone with a degree. I know people don’t like hearing things like this. This isn’t my opinion, this is data collected from nearly ten years of job placement assistance.

Space Monkey How does this story play out for people with STEM degrees? Is there a sub-pattern for certain degree fields where they are harder to place?

he's only 25, so college is a bigger part of his history than post-college work.

I would like to know of the jobs you are speaking about because my husband and I have a 22 year old that was smarted enough to get into an engineering school and had scholarships but he wasn’t happy and dropped out the first semester. He’s having trouble gaining employment more than $13 an hr. He’s in the Huntsville Alabama area. I have always encouraged him to live his passion and his dreams and college wasn’t necessary if he was willing to work hard with his body. I would love and he would love to get a job making 60 to 80 K. Any input you have would be appreciated.

      MOCRNA Soon to be FI
if he is willing to move specifically for money, he can prob make 50-100% more. His expenses will go up, leaving AL, of course.
