  • BEST BUDGET 5.1 HOME THEATER SPEAKERS - Klipsch Reference Theater Pack Review
    What the WHAT?! This 5.1 theater speaker set packs a PUNCH, along with an insane price point! And this ain’t some no-name brand either…it’s from KLIPSCH! So you know it’s quality. I review the Reference Theater Pack and give you a few pointers along the way. Check it out!
    *CORRECTION: I made the mistake of circling the wire terminals and called them the "keyhole mounts" on both the satellite and center speakers. D'OH! My bad. The keyhole mount holes are actually in the exact spot as the ¼ " threaded insert. Sorry for any confusion!

    Little tip. When finding where to put the Sub don't just put it where you like the look place it in all 4 corners testing one at a time then try some others places. If you have a friend or partner to help ask them to come in the room each time and close their eyes and tell you where they think the bass is coming from. You want to get it in a place that makes it impossible to tell where the sub bass is coming from. If you place on the left in front of you and its easy to tell its there then keep trying. Once you have it in a place that makes it impossible to judge where the bass is coming from then you will be getting the best experience possible.

    Nice video dude! I got this same package back in November and I still find myself fine tuning the settings for it (never ends, I swear). I was wondering what you set your speaker levels to in your AVR settings? I know each person's setup will vary with distances and all, but I was just curious. My LCR are about 10-11ft away and my surrounds are about 8ft from my seating position.

    Just set this system up with the Sony AV receiver ( STR-DH790 ) and a set of Micca RB42X which I used as my fronts. Makes an awesome 5.1.2 system and the subwoofer is incredibly powerful. I have it set at about 10 o’clock on the sub and negative 2 in my receiver and it vibrates everything in the living room. For an 8” sub it’s really hard to believe it puts out that much power. Even my installer couldn’t believe the quality of sound for such a low profile set. Great accurate review. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

But time has come to replace with a 5.1 set of speakers. I found this set and made a purchase via Amazon (expected delivery this week) since Costco was out of stock. The set should be more than sufficient to improve what we had previously in our family room, really looking forward to hearing it all. Once again, thank you ... very helpful info, well done!

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks, Jake! Well, since this an “old school” wired speaker system, you’d still have to power the Klipsch passive speakers with an AV receiver and some speaker wire to connect all the speakers to the receiver. But there are some great inexpensive receivers out there that have Bluetooth connectivity to stream music thru it like the Denon AVR-S540BT. I’d recommend that! You’d have 5.1 surround and killer bass for music and it won’t break the bank! 👍

So couldn't press the demo button to hear the,m. Does the sub really vibrate the room like a car sub would? I mean the kinda vibration he described is car stuff my guy. I wouldn't be surprised even though it only goes to 38 Hz cause I have heard some other Klipsch subs at Costco and brugh they hella sound like a car sub. What AVR did you use with them?

Grab yourself a budget avr and you could be up and running for 600-700 bucks that’s a good deal for everything and a good starting system . I'm actually planning to buy the same. Then upgrade one step at a time. Do you think it would be possible to upgrade this to a 5.1.2 Atmos setup? I'm not really familiar how to setup Home theater. What I'm planning is to buy these speakers then upgrade the two front satellite speakers with a Klipsch RP-600M book shelf speakers. Then I'll be placing the satellite speaker on my ceiling instead. I'm not sure if it is possible though. Will the sound be unbalanced? since RP-600M seems to be a pretty powerful speaker.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před 3 lety

      Astro Tomato One step at a time is what I’ve been doing as well. And that’s actually a great idea, using the front satellites as the eventual height speakers! Since the heights are generally where music and atmospheric/ambient sound effects live in an Atmos system, the RTP satellites are more than capable of handling those types of sounds. Way to think creatively!

      @@chronot1342 Probably the Onkyo. It's got just a touch more power than the Denon, although their room calibration software isn't as good as Audyssey (which comes with Denon), so you might be doing a tad more manual corrections. But pound for pound, Onkyo over Denon just by a hair. But the last thing to consider is music. Yamaha is a clear winner when it comes to a great hybrid home theater/music receiver. And the Yamaha makes it MUCH easier to create a whole home music listening experience all controlled by the TSR-700 (if that's something you're into). Otherwise: 1) Onkyo 2) Denon 3) Yamaha

I ordered 5 home theater speakers, but after the fact I noticed that they where 6 ohm speakers. The home theather amplifier ( I just got a yamaha tsr-700 from costco ) I think it can handle different ohm loads. Will using the 6 ohm amp have any effect? do you prefer 8 ohm? whats the deal here?

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před 3 lety

      Oh sure, that Yamaha will still be fine. And even if you had 4 ohm nominal speakers, it would still be fine. It's just better for 4 ohm speakers to have more power driven through them. 6 ohm is still close enough to 8 ohm that it's not gonna matter much.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks so much for the compliments, Richard! For a 5.1 system, I would personally avoid any HTIB that also comes with its own receiver (like the Onkyo HT-s3910). It usually means the internal components of the receiver are pretty cheap. I would recommend getting the Klipsch Reference Theater Pack, the Denon AVR-S650H, and some 14 gauge speaker wire from Amazon. It costs more up front, but it'll last you a lot longer and give you better performance.
      As far as an Atmos system is concerned, you'll usually need to spend at least $800 and get a receiver that's at least 7.1 channel. I'm actually releasing another video next week reviewing 2 budget Dolby Atmos soundbar systems, so those might be an option for you too! Be on the look out for that when it comes out! :)

You can make the left, center and right speakers as close or far apart as you want. But using a soundbar just for a center channel? Buenos dias! I haven’t personally heard the Jamo set, but I would say it is very similar to the 5.1.4 Cinema System since Klipsch also owns the Jamo brand. But the Jamo set is definitely better looking, compared to the typical black speakers of Klipsch. So I would say Jamo is best, since it sounds great and LOOKS better too! 😁🤘

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před 3 lety +1

      Honestly, with regards to the Enclave, it comes down to personal preference and/or how your home theater space is set up. You can get the Klipsch Ref Theater Pack, Denon S650BT and 14 gauge speaker wire for roughly the same price as an Enclave II. But with the Enclave, each speaker still leaves you tethered to a wall since they’re powered and need an electrical outlet nearby. But if you have bookshelves or something to hide the power cables, sweet! I’ve actually never experienced WiSA technology personally, but I’ve heard great things! I trust the sound quality is excellent, but me personally, I like the control I have over each speaker (EQ and volume level) with passive speakers and a good AV receiver, and being able to hide most of the wire behind my walls. I would love to review the Enclave, tho! Hopefully once this channel blows up, Enclave will wanna send me new toys to review. 😄👍 Tell all your friends! And thanks for your question!

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před rokem

      Yeah, I’d leave it full out LFE, which is typically a crossover of 120 Hz. That’s best for this little system since the satellite speakers can only handle frequencies as low as 110 Hz, so setting speaker and subwoofer crossovers to 120 Hz is ideal, so that the speakers and subwoofer are all on the same page. Speakers handle everything from 120 Hz and up, and subwoofer handles 120 Hz and below. 👍

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před 3 lety

      Which settings were you thinking of? As far as volume levels, that is unique to your home theater space. For example, I have 10 foot ceilings and an open concept living room that includes a kitchen and dining area in the same space, so I have my center channel louder than the Front L/R speakers so I can hear the dialog better. The reason I got the Klipsch RTP in the first place was because when we first moved into our current house, there were already 4 speakers in the ceiling and a center channel speaker in the wall below where the TV is mounted. The previous owner just used those ceiling speakers as their 5.1 setup. But then I thought, "Once I get an inexpensive, yet quality 5.1 system, I can turn those ceiling speakers into height channels and have a full 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos setup!" So I had to do quite a bit of tweaking with levels to make it sound encompassing since my walls and ceilings are pretty far away from the listening position. Other than that, I don't really mess with sound modes or tones since the Onkyo is good at recognizing which protocol to follow, whether that be Atmos or DTS:X, etc. Although if I wanna listen to music, I try and stream it from my phone ( as opposed to from the XBOX) through the Onkyo app, since it does make it sound better when that blue "Music Optimizer" button is lit up. Hope that helps!

      @ealanosborne  Před 3 lety +3

      Thanks! And yes, you’ll need a 5.1 channel receiver or some sort of amplifier to power these passive speakers. And this Klipsch theater pack doesn’t come with wireless speakers, so you’ll need speaker wire to pass the audio signal from your amp to these speakers. I personally have a media closet where my receiver is, then I cut holes out and fished speaker wire behind my walls so I could mount these speakers on the walls in my living room with minimal wires being seen. I prefer satellite speakers compared to sound bars, since they give you a more discrete, detailed sound stage, but I understand the sleek aesthetic look of a nice sound bar. Good luck! 👍

Would you recommend a slimline less watt Marantz over a Denon or Yamaha AVR. I want to start with a 5.1 setup then slowly build to a 5.2.2 or 5.2.4 or 7.2.2. Please let me know your thoughts.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před 3 lety +1

      An interesting thing I’ve noticed is that manufacturers aren’t selling budget 9 channel receivers anymore (less than $1,000). I got my Onkyo TX-NR787 a few years ago for $499 after watching the price like a hawk, then jumping on it when it went on sale.
      But all manufacturers have discontinued that tier of receiver. No idea why. But the Denon x3700h is the best/least expensive I could find that was 9 channel, but still costs $1,200. Since you wanna go up to a 5.2.4 or 7.2.2, you’ll need 9 channels eventually, so might as well make that investment up front? There is a Marantz similar to the Denon that costs $1,699. Yikes! But of course that’s gonna be an amazing receiver.
      I’d stick with the big beefy receivers, as opposed to slim line, since you want to upgrade eventually. If you just wanted to stick with a 5.2.2 with small satellite speakers, a slimline would be fine.
      My Reference Theater Pack I still thoroughly enjoy. It’s good for me for now. I might upgrade my satellites to some SVS Primes down the line. There’s a chance we might be moving to a larger property 3 years or so from now, at which point I’d want to have a dedicated home theater room. Then I’d upgrade everything slowly. But for now? No need to upgrade my current home theater TOO much more. 😄

    I love your videos Ealan! Good content coverage plus some humor and visual effects along the way!
    So I do have a question......
    So this Theater pack is currently on sale for $350 at Costco and you get the 5 speakers and a 8" sub. I'd have to buy a receiver at about $300 to power it. So the all in cost would be about $650 to get 5.1 surround.
    I am also looking at the Klipsch Cinema 600 soundbar which is on-sale for $300 right now. This package, from what I can tell, has better front and center speakers (classic Klipsch horn design) built into the soundbar plus it has a larger wireless 10" sub. I can also pair the Cinema 600 soundbar with the wireless Klipsch Surround 3's for about another $250. So the all-in price for the Cinema 600 + Surround 3's would be $550 and this would get me a complete 5.1 theater package.
    I'm curious what your thoughts are on this Costco 5.1 Theater Pack vs the Klipsch Cinema 600 + wireless Surround 3's? I'm thinking the Cinema 600 + Surround 3's would be a better deal since all the speakers seem to be better plus it has a larger more powerful sub. Plus it's $100 cheaper.
    I was curious what your thoughts are?
    Thanks!

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před 3 lety +1

      Wow! Thanks for the compliments!
      Here’s the rub - both of those setups will have their pluses and minuses. Yes the theater pack needs a receiver, but good ol’ fashioned wired speakers will last and give you few problems, if any at all.
      That being said, the Cinema 600’s soundbar speakers’ frequency response goes down to 35Hz, so they are full range, compared to the theater pack’s speakers which only go down to 110Hz, so they’re not as full.
      And yes, that subwoofer is bigger, so you’ll get amazing low frequency response. But the 8” sub in the theater pack is still so surprisingly powerful.
      BUT...those Three speakers are wireless, and I have read articles saying they aren’t the most reliable. There is a chance if you get the Threes, you’ll have no issues whatsoever. Cool. But wireless speakers always have more of a chance to do bizarre things. But the convenience of not having to deal with wires with speakers behind you, that is definitely a plus.
      So you just gotta pick your battles wisely. 😀 I think either setup is a good bet.

    Hello Ealan and fellow audio enthusiast. I'm hoping to get feedback/opinion. I’m a beginner and recently purchased this Klipsch Reference Theatre pack 5.1($350) and the 7.2 Onkyo TX-NR6050 av receiver($430) both on sale from Costco, still in the box. I’m planning to get some bookshelf speakers like the Klipsch R-41M or R-51M to use as my fronts to set up a 5.1.2 system.
    The other day I noticed this Klipsch Reference Cinema System 5.1.4 with Dolby Atmos on sale for $399 at my local Costco. I’m tempted to get the Cinema pack and return the Theatre pack. Can the Cinema pack be used as a 5.1.2 due to my 7 channel receiver? Also which of these 2 budget setups would you choose/recommend, an actual 5.1.2 from the Theatre pack or the Cinema 5.1.2? Or can we cancel out the Cinema pack’s atmos and use 2 actual height speakers? Lastly, which sub do you think is better, the 8” downward firing or the 10” front firing sub? Thanks in advance, I really enjoy your channel and congrats once again on your recent milestone.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před rokem

      The Cinema pack’s speakers are deceptively large (and the subwoofer is bigger), so if you want bigger, go with that. And if possible, I would go with separate height speakers instead of using the Cinema pack’s upward firing speakers for Atmos effects. They’re okay, but mounting actual speakers up high is far superior, if that fits in your budget.

      @@ealanosborne Thanks for your response bro, this channel is freakin awesome. Sounds like the cinema's system bigger speakers really are better than the theater pack satellites (not shitting on the 5.1). What budget speakers would you recommend to add for the rear heights on the cinema system? Or maybe use 2 of the Cinema's satellites for heights and add bookshelf speaker like Klipsch R-41M/ R-51M for fronts?

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před rokem +1

      Oh most definitely! Speakers are speakers, so you can still connect the 5.1.4 Cinema System to your Onkyo. On each of the 4 main speakers, there are two sets of speaker terminals - one set for the main speaker, one set for the Atmos speakers, so you just don’t need to connect the Atmos speakers. Easy! 😁

    • @ealanosborne

    I was looking at this set. Wondering if it would be an upgrade to my Energy 5.1 Take Classic setup. The Energy system sounds pretty decent (needed the small form factor), but the Center Channel is quickly overwhelmed. I need something with more OOOMPH in the center channel.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před 3 lety +1

      Hmmm...I’ve never listened to those speakers personally. But at least on paper, it seems like the Energy 5.1 is comparable to the Klipsch. I don’t know if the Klipsch center channel will have more oomph, but Klipsch usually are brighter in tone, so the clarity with dialog might be an improvement over your current speakers. • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před 3 lety

      Even though the Klipsch Ref Theater Pack needs to be hooked up to a receiver to work, I still think a receiver+Klipsch discrete surround sound system beats a soundbar system in the same price range since you get a larger sound stage than the fairly narrow stage you get with a soundbar. And the subwoofer that comes with the Klipsch system is just so powerful! Just my opinion, though! 😀

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Před 3 lety +1

      Correct. These are called “passive” speakers, meaning they don’t have power by themselves. The receiver powers them. So you need to use speaker wire to connect the speakers to a receiver to get sound out of them. I have some links to receivers you might want to look into in the description of the video. 👍
