      When I was 20, broke, and single, I was lucky enough to be employed by Bose. A perk of that employment was the ownership of a Bose Lifestyle 12 HT System. For a starter system, it was excellent. I added a 12 inch powered sub-woofer to the system to shore up the low end.

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  Před 4 lety +2

      That would be a heck of a perk even today Jonathan! I have nothing against Bose, I think in the right circumstances and for the right person they're pretty good, little speakers! Thanks for sharing!

      When I was 24, I got my first solo apartment in Rockport Texas, ‘94. I was finally making good money as medic. So where did I go? Why circuit city of course. And what did I get? The Bose acoustimass 5 series 2. Paired with an Onkyo AVR with a 6 disc changer and Toshiba VCR that played on my 26” Samsung CRT tv. Baller!

      My first system in the mid 90s consisted of a Harmon Kardon AVR80 and a Velodyne VA1012 sub (I was working at Circuit City and got them using accommodations or my store discount. With the money I saved I bought a set of Paradigm monitor 7s matching center and a set of Paradigm Dipole surround speakers. It has been all downhill from there.

    Great review! I bought mine in white for $175. I added a Jamo C912 sub for $165 and the Atmos speakers for $200. $540 for the quality of this setup is ludicrous. I power this with a Denon AVR S760H I got on clearance for $250 at Costco. My LG C1 65" (that I got on clearance for $900) completes the setup. I love everything about this, especially the fact that my wife approved the price and then the sounds and visuals!

    Thank you for this Andrew, your ability to impart important information about the product, but then mix it up with an objective viewpoint, overlayed with subjectivity and most importantly an unbiased viewpoint, except when the product deserves its bias I expect is the reason you have your audience. Another reason is your broad coverage making sure the expensive stuff that we all lust after and the few can buy is juxtaposed with affordable quality. Caught your channel at the beginning of the year, when fate would have it was looking for desktop speakers for my now definitely and very lucky to have home office (read spare bedroom). I bought a pair of edifiers which are perfect and fulfill the brief of good enough, but your channel has always left me wanting more. Your review of the marantz nr1200 convinced me that was the stereo amplifier needed, but what speakers. Always wanted Marantz with a relative’s Marantz separates being a focal point when I was a child. Without a massive space, it was never going to be a big room filling sound, and being a little bit older I’m no longer chasing that big bass either, which also meant I didn’t need to look at budget busting numbers, besides I never spent a lot of time indoors (fresh air used to be great) it was never at the top of my priority list. Summer and a relaxing of lockdown rules saw it go to the back of my mind. But a purchase of a 50” Philip’s ambilight for under £500 on amazon (can’t fault Jeff) coupled with the realisation that we’re going to be stuck indoors for a long time, my focus has switched back to home cinema. When I moved house a few years ago, I said I wasn’t going to fill the place with speakers, so bought a Bose soundbase solo 15, which again is good enough, but the edifiers I bought actually sounded better. Key was stereo separation that is sorely lacking from the soundbase. Anyways to cut a long story short the options are now the Jamo S807 HCS. As I figure I won’t need to add the subs, plus they look great and they can’t be any worse than the 803 system you’ve reviewed here. The ambilight TV has opened me to world of Atmos, plus your review of the Sony AV receiver, which frankly has had better reviews than the Marantz but has led me down the path of the Marantz NR1710. Must be in champagne and love the half size. I have seen the NR1711 for £50 more. Is it worth spending extras on the 1711. Will it be more future proofed, as I have no intention of chasing the high of buying new components every few years. The NR1710 plus the 807 system comes in at £1100 which I think is a fantastic deal. Plan to get the system bedded in then add the S8 Atmos modules and hopefully that should see me through our new life spent indoors. It would be great to get your opinion and also any advice on cabling, and thanks again for providing us all with a great public service. Thanks and keep safe.

    Great review! I just bought this Jamo 803 HCS system for my first surround sound system on sale. I also bought 2 Klipsch R620Fs loudspeakers on sale as well. I wall mounted the 803s as side speakers and am using the 801s for iMac/GarageBand music studio speakers. I have an old Yamaha RX-V373 5.1 receiver but the Klipschs have enough bass that idc about a subwoofer. A very affordable first time home theater system that I couldn’t be happier with. Thank you!

    My "first" surround system was Cerwin Vega D-9's fronts and Cerwin Vega D-5's rears (from my stereo system). Pro Logic was the first to come out so all I had to do was upgrade my amp. When 5.1 came out (another amp upgrade!), I added a small Sony 10" sub and a PBS centre channel. I have upgraded many times for new formats, etc. but still have my Cerwin Vegas! Not bad for 40+ years!! I would also like to add I love your videos!

    Hey everyone! I saw this video last summer (‘22) while digging for info for the best budget system for my surround sound project….yes I bought this set largely based on this review 🎉
    And others. After having it for a solid year coupled with the S 10 subwoofer, I’ve had no complaints and it’s been amazing. Running a set of rear surrounds from sony (7.1) through a sony receiver dh -790, the only speaker I found was lacking is indeed the center speaker and I always kept this review point in mind. Nothing will change that though. I tried using the crossover settings, increasing the DB level and other things. I did purchase the larger center speaker on a sale and sold the other one. Soooooo much better! Came back to watch this review all over again over a year later to write this out. Thanks for a perfect review. He speaks the truth.

      Thank you for your comment. I would also like to purchase this 5.0 JAMO. The only doubt I have from listening to Andrew, is to prefer the s83 center over s81 in the package. Reading you also confirmed that by replacing the center unit you had a good improvement. Can you confirm that the highs and mid-highs are crystal clear and make the dialogues heard very well? for the bass I have a very good subwoofer so I prefer to have for the other speakers clear dialogues. I would also like to match the two atmos speakers to complete. then do you recommend this replacement of the center unit and then it's ok? thank you.

    I am still using my first surround system with a little upgrade recently. This is in my bedroom because I prefer to watch movies in there. I have a nice set of Klipsch reference bookshelf speakers (R4x something) and a Klipsch home theater in a box for surround channels 4, 5, 6 & 7. I was using the HTIAB center channel for years and recently upgraded to a Klipsch reference R34C center channel (4 mids and a tweet). I am using a 20+ year old Infinity 8" powered sub and my receiver is a Pioneer Elite 7.2 unit. Eventually I would like to upgrade the surround speakers but I am in no hurry.

    Nice to see a decent affordable home theater, paired with a decent $500 ht reciever and the sub you hav a good sounding system for under a grand , not bad. My first home theater is actually the one I have now with one upgrade. Infinity interlude suite featuring a pair of Il 50s, pair of Il 10s, and an IL 25c center. A Carver av705x 5 channel powerhouse and a recently added Marantz Av7005 preamp processor. The marantz gave me a level of sound quality that surprised me. This system sourced from Ebay cost me under $1500 bucks. Speakers going on 17 years

    NIIIICE!!! Yeah i've been diggin the reviews on the Jamo!! I'm acutally super interested in them! Totally up my alley since i'm using surround sound system for everyday listening for music and for when my wife and i watch netflix/primevideo/disneyplus/etc....
    The first surround sound system i heard i think was the Bose Acoustimass originals. And STAR WARS was the trial movie and it was AWESOME! For the longest time (since i'm a PC fanatic) i used the RCA surround sound system i got from Walmart on the cheap.. $250. The bass was incredible! And the speakers had excellent mids and highs plus i have a Dolby Digital Graphic Equalizer to hone it in... problem though was that the fan on the reciever would dry up and make heinous noises so i had to pop the "hood" off of it and lube the ball bearing on it from time to time! haha!! And then the sub plastic front piece glus must've started to weaken cause the sub-w would rattle at certain frequencies and volumes in general. So i took some twine and wrapped it up tight as i could and it fixed it for the most part HAHAHA!! Man what a gerry rigged setup!
    You ever hear of Danley Labs Speakers? They do a lot of commercial type cinema surround sound setups probably very out of budget price range but they have a "synergy" speaker basically like... multiple loaded horn speaker that looks super interesting.

  • @MichaelLivingston-me

    This is a buy at $200, but when I looked at your links, I found the prices were around $400.
    I might suggest a worthy contender for the low price bargain surround system.
    Polk T15 5.25" bookshelf speakers $69 / pair thru Amazon
    Alternate front tower speakers.
    Polk T50 2-way 6.25 bass driver with 2 passive 6.25 reinforcement woofers. $238 / pair.
    Polk T30 center channel $99
    Polk 10" PSW10 Subwoofer $129
    Overall if this system was puchased with bookshelf speakers, you would pay just under $370. If the system were to be purchased with two tower speakers up front, keeping the standard twin woofer front speaker, the price would be around $535.
    I haven't heard the Jamo, but I can almost guarantee you would love the sound of such an entry level surround system. Definitely clear midrange, balanced and articulate highs, with a natural bass extension through the sub that would blend well even with the smaller bookshelve speakers.

  • @jvlentini
    @jvlentini Před 4 lety +4

    I purchased the Center and front Bookshelves. They are nice looking speakers. But the center channel in particular was "shouty"
    The treble is a bit crispy too. I put these in place of ELAC B6.2 and C6.2. After listening to this setup for ~1.5 years the JAMOs did not pass muster with me.
    Maybe just a corner case but I was watching The Naked City TV shows from early 1960s. In the recording there is a recording artifact where there is a hum after vocals are spoken.
    The S83 Center would resonate and howl with this frequency. Anyway. I think they are nice looking and OK speakers especially for the price. But the sound is too harsh and you can hear the cabinets especially in the low midrange. I love the channel and your reviews @Andrew Robinson.

    I'm actually still using my "first" real home theater set up. Pioneer Elite VSX-50, Paradigm Monitor 11 Series 7 for my L&R, Polk Monitors for Center & Rear, and a Paradigm PW-2200 12" Sub. I know it's kind of a hodge podge of components, but it treats me well. I'm one of those crazies who uses it for everything. I love the connectivity it has. HTPC, Xbox One, Pioneer Blu-Ray player, and a Pioneer PL-707 turntable. I love that it works perfectly with my iOS devices. USB that is iPod enabled. It even has AirPlay and I can control it from an app on my phone.
    Don't get me wrong, a good 2 channel system is nice, but this thing does it all and very well in my opinion. I love my B&O system, but the Pioneer and Paradigm is better to my ears.

    By far, you are the one person I like to listen to when it comes to knowledge of music and surround sound systems. I had a set of infinity bookshelf speakers who were suffering the wife effects. (Too large, the black color doesn't match the living room, etc. I came across your review of the Jamo s803 speakers set, and I purchased the set plus two s10 subwoofer. Thank you. I am extremely happy with these speakers. I don't know how such inexpensive speakers can produce such great sound. I am in the process of getting the atmos speakers. Hopefully, they will be as good as the others. Could you please let me know the best crossover frequency for these speakers. So far, they have been able to sound better at a crossover level 65.
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge with those of us who don't know much about it.

    Thank you. I would also like to purchase this 5.0 JAMO. The only doubt I have from listening to you, is to prefer the s83 center over s81 in the package. Reading you also confirmed that by replacing the center unit you had a good improvement. Can you confirm that the highs and mid-highs are crystal clear and make the dialogues heard very well? for the bass I have a very good subwoofer so I prefer to have for the other speakers clear dialogues. I would also like to match the two atmos speakers to complete. then do you recommend this replacement of the center unit and then it's ok? thank you.

Your dialogue is enjoyable and entertaining, unlike some of the other reviewers of home theater and audio systems. I am dipping my toe into the word of home theater, and thanks to you I’ve pulled the trigger on a 75” Hisense H8G. I would like to have a true surround sound with a receiver and sub, but I am also on a budget. I’ve read so many positive reviews about the nakamichi 7.2.4 and 9.2.4 soundbars that come with dual subs and rear speakers. Have you any experience with them? Would love for you to review it if you could, and I’m looking to your review of the Hisense H9G this month. Thank you for your time and effort creating this content. You’ve gained a subscriber.

    You weren't kidding about the boxy sound out of the center channel. I was really surprised by how pronounced it was even compared to the tiny rear channel speakers. I expected it to sound maybe even slightly better than the L/R channels given the extra size (the larger driver might be smaller but there's two of them). I think the issue isn't the size rather the symmetry of the center channel. Try this: Stand the center channel up on its side and you'll be surprised to find the boxy sound almost disappears. I wonder if the issue is due to the fact that they put two of the larger drivers in plane causing interference patterns due to how far apart they are. I wonder if simply disconnecting one of the larger drivers alleviates the problem.

    Jamo HT in a box $200

    Last year I put some vintage Sansui 12" 3-way SP-2500s up on my stands in the movie room to test them out after I recapped them. They sounded so good on TV and Blueray I never took them down. It's that strong lower midrange and double horn tweeters that add excitement to action movies. I'll never go back to tiny home theater speakers. Im still running my 12" BIC powered sub coming in at 80hz. I'm back to 2.1 and never been happier.

      So can I ask, you're saying you're only using left and right plus a sub for everything, including watching movies, streaming, etc.? While i know for sure that regular speakers sound better than a crappy soundbar, don't you miss having the rear surround effect on movies? And no Atmos? Thanks.

    • @edjackson4389
      @edjackson4389 Před 3 lety

      @@mrsj1417 I seriously don't miss the rear surround speakers or Atmos. The larger main speakers with multiple drivers seem to mimic the surround sound some how. Voices sound clearer and Im not continuously having to raise the volume up and down on movies like before. I have to be honest though the 7.1 and 5.1 setups I've had have never really impressed me that much. It's all just a bunch of extra BS. I did take about an hour placing the two main speakers (using music) to get a good center soundstage. I pulled them away from the back wall about 18 inches and toed them inward little by little until everything sounded right.

I'm a 4 channel stereo man myself, good way to get a little of both worlds, the Jamo 620 rears i got had too much bass response and annoyed me when I had music really loud, I got a couple of woofers for them that only respond down to about 85Hz and now I have the perfect system IMO movies, music, whatever. Stuff recorded behind the mic still sounds like it's coming from the back, or from the front if recorded from the front, it kind of just creates what I refer to as a complete stereo sound field.

    Can you do a video on the use of active studio monitors as a home listening system? Pros and cons and what to look for?
    I think it can be done very well, and can actually be good value for money and make a system very simple as well. I currently run my PC usb through a PS Audio multilink DAC which then feeds a 2.1 set of Blue-Sky satellites and sub combo with balanced XLR connections, and they sound great! No amp, no noise and you can get as close to a neutral sound signature as possible even with the cheapest active monitors.

I decided at that point that o was tired of the black ash boxes in my living room and of all the wires and interconnects and complexity of the receiver (read an AVR manual lately?). I personally think to buy the parts separately and replace the S81 center with the S83, and then add a sub-woofer, in this case Jamo J10 or if I can find an Emotiva SE8 here that would be awesome and a Denon X540bt 5 channel receiver. Perfect set up. The price obviously goes up a bit but I think it will worth it. Oh and this whole set up is 1420 USD here in my country with the S83 Center, Jamo sub and the Denon receiver. Exclude the receiver and the extra sub-woofer and stick with the S803 HTS only, u are still looking at 620 USD here unfortunately. But still, try to buy only a pair of, let's say, the cheapest SVS towers here; get ready to pay 1540 USD just for those! God bless u Jamo :)
