PS4 Blue Light Of Death - BLOD Guide
Vložit
- čas přidán 16. 06. 2018
- The PS4 Blue Light of Death is unfortunately, a problem that can affect all models of PlayStation 4. It started with the original console and has been a problem with the Slim consoles as well as the Pro consoles.
The cause of the blod is usually faulty or corroded solder joints under the APU on the motherboard. The APU is secured to the motherboard via lots of tiny solder joints. These solder joints can become cracked, loose or corroded and cause a bad connection.
When you turn the PS4 on and only get a pulsing blue light it's because the console is doing a self test of the software but since there are bad connections on the motherboard the self test cannot complete so what you have is a constantly blinking blue light that never ends.
This problem can sometimes be solved easily on the original console but unfortunately not on the Slim or Pro models. Sometimes a reball will work but it's not guaranteed and there's no way to know how long it will last.

What questions do you have for me about the blue light of death (BLOD)? Thanks for the support!
TronicsFix LLC excellent video. Which is the cause of this corrosion you mentioned? Heat?. Or is because a poor quality soldering?
Honestly, I'm not sure. I would guess some of both. It wouldn't help if the console was dropped and/or handled roughly either.
TronicsFix LLC would a reflow work also?
What are the odds of this happening? Is it a fairly regular event or is it just a stroke of bad luck
Sometimes...but reflows don't generally last any longer then the washer fix.
Red light - Xbox 360, Yellow light - PS3, Blue light - PS4. Sony and Microsoft should have removable sockets for these APUs for easy repair.
Totally agree!
Intense Mark I had my ps3 for around 9 years I never had a yellow light
If they did that then there would be no reason to repair them. A typical PGA, or LGA won't suffer from this type of damage. The biggest issue is they are cheaping out on the cooling and allowing the chip to get too hot, or they are using very cheap lead free solder for the balls that cause corrosion. No matter which way you slice it, it's sony and microsofts fault. You'd think that by now they would have learned their lesson. I was able to fix a PS3 with a heat gun a long time ago but it seems that doesn't work with the new consoles.
@@asleeperj . the lesson is these companies are making a killing because once the warranty is out unit dies and you buy another one.
@@killabee623 That's not how loss leading works dude. They lose money on each unit. So if for every PS4 that is bought it cost Sony a certain amount of money. The console is say 400$ but costs Sony 500$ do produce. The way they make that money isn't to have you buy another system they get their money back from your PS subscription, and Sony made exclusives.
Smash our head to wall When He said *"unfortunately"*
Same same
Sadly I'm a year late to the support group...
I guess that was one way to sell more consoles
Ha, ha...true
jackofall125 good point
They dont actually make much money on consoles at all. They might actually take a loss with the cost of creating consoles and how much they sell for
Mik not really they build them in china and bulk buy the hardware
Easy fix, just remove the light.
Use a hammer

Love your videos man!! I have gotten into fixing game consoles and selling them, mainly making a profit but it is a risk. Started with outdated hardware as a casual fixer(up to PS3) but moving on to the expensive stuff. I'm moving on to ps4s/xbox ones now and using your videos to learn the ropes! Just subbed

This blinking colored light of death is plaguing the PS3 and now the PS4. I wont be surprised if this happens on the PS5
Yeet Souls did u fix it bro
On the PS4 the hdmi port is different from the PS3 so it breaks alot
It's waaaay less common to see a PS4 with BLOD than a PS3 with a YLOD.
the same supplier for the ps5, so same problem
@@MarantzSt153 And it is still waaay less common to see an Xbox One with an issue. You'll have a failing harddrive every now and then (which you'll also have on PS4s), but that is about it. PS4s fail quite often and most are actually easy fixes. Blown fuse in the PSU (one of the main issues if the PS4 doesn't turn on at all or blinks blue and shuts itself off almost immediately), one, two or up to four blown fuses on the mainboard (or driveboard with the phats) leading to the drive not working at all and the update not going through, dead lasers, overheating due to crappy thermal paste... Most of these are fixes you can easily do yourself, the parts cost between one and 10 USD (ok, the dead laser is more expensive, costs 20 to 30 USD depending on your model). I kind of like the PS4 for that, you can get a broken one off ebay for 50 Euros easily, fix it up and sell it for 150 with an honest description.
These companies just aren't building things strong as they used to.
But I’ve had my playstion 4 since launch never cleaned and I use it everyday till like 2AM so naw they are still pretty damn strong products
Just look at the Atari 2600. Consoles need more fake wood.
By design bro. They're designed to break once new versions come out. It's a well known ploy amongst tech firms.
@Triple.N. Looool! No. It is not a conspiracy but fact. There’s been law suits over it.
I might switch to Xbox, Playstation is becoming horrible.
Why make 3 different generations of the PS4 and nobody bother to fix this problem 🤦♂️😂
It's not problem Sony can really control
SimmerTheSauce ' it is, you can make these things easier to access and repair by yourself or third party, its not that difficult to fix it when you know what youre doing, problem is most people dont or dont have the tools.
@@KilyanAustin yea
@@simmerthesauce9228 Of course Sony can control it. They don't bother because they know the majority will just buy another console when they get a problem like this. It all comes down to money
It's not that hard, remove the bottom plastic, remove the secondary metal shield, remove the bracket for heat sync (two black screws), place dime in the middle of the bracket, reinstall bracket, install everything removed, turn on and enjoy! Pretty simple process, looked online for a year, listened to this type of information, finally stumbled across a thread, tried, and has been running strong. Try it what could you lose?
10 cents.
Can you make a video for us bud
I did it and it doesn’t work
I like how the 360 rrod washer method lives on.
Very nice channel Steve, channels like yours really help people with skills save a ton of equipment that normally would be put in a landfill.
I have a PS4 project I’m working on now. Would a reball repair be considered a somewhat permanent fix?
If I tried doing the washers and a quality thermal paste what are my odds it would work?
Thanks for a great channel!!

Thanks for the video. Finally someone actually said it might be your apu or ram chips. All these articles saying it's your psu or hard drive, same old dumb articles regurgitating the same bs.
Good video thanks :) very good and accurate information
Just like the red ring of death from the Xbox 360, likely using a heat gun and press to reinstall the chip and putting protection seal on the board. Don't drill or pierce the board because of internal wiring.
Don't you think it's strange how this issue is in every console nowadays and it's never fixed in the design?

I have the BLOD but it's taking me to Safe Mode Infintie Loop, would that be a motherboard issue as well?
I also can never turn on the PS4 with the controller. I must do it through the main power button.
Very great content indeed, but one thing that I think was missed is that a failing hard drive can also be a cause for the BLOD. I was thinking my ps4 was toast after watching this but come to find out I replaced my hard drive and my ps4 is working like new again.
Mine has this except the blue light turns on for like 2 seconds then auto turns off and I have to unplug it to turn it back on

Then the BLOD, wouldn't get to the recovery menu. I slapped the top of the thing, and it's working fine right now. Is it possible just smacked a solder joint on the APU back in place, or is it some other issue?
Looking to sell it, but not gonna sell it if it's busted!

How come nobody discusses the "no light of death"?
This is the first, honest video that I've found about a ps4 slim basically saying my blue light of death is practically unfixable. Everything else I've tried hasn't worked, and now finding this video almost makes me want to put the nail in the coffin so to speak of my ps4.......
So I bought a original ps4 for 50$ broken, I had to do the washer trick and it worked fine, then today it did this blue light thing and I was sad, I then tightened the screws all the way and it worked. Thanks!!!!
So, you're telling me I should not buy a new power supply?
I'm on the fence , about to buy it but if that's not the problem and the chip like you say , I'm screwed.
I bought a nEw lower supply, and that's was just a waste of money.
I have a question about my situation! My ps4 does the BLOD everytime I turn it on, but only the first time. Once I restart it manually (because if I let it ON without restarting, also after a minute, nothing goes on and the screen on TV continues to stay blue with the "without signal" message), after a quick message of test that says "ps4 wasn't turned off correctly", it goes well and the system turns ON and I can log in, play games etc... What could it be?
The other issue that I see is that when I play games after 5/10 minutes, according to the intensity of the game, PS4 crashes in a dark screen with white stripes and a strange whistle, after that the BLOD again.
My system heats up really fast and a lot. Could it be the thermal paste or the power supply? Can I try the fix you show in the video?
Is the FAT version and it's been used for long. Not by me unfortunately! Thanks!
how is the situation now?
did the clamp technique for the old ps4. worked fine for me
I only get the blue light of death when turning it on half the time . It also randomly turns off every now and again but not fully. When it turns off the picture goes, the fan slows down and often there’s a loud buzz sound for a few seconds. Could this be something else or is it what’s in the video
Asking for a friend of mine. He's ps4 start showing weird colours on screen with pixels, it also shows the error CE-36329-3.
Is there any fix for this?
write the number of the error in search

loved this video and the other videos you done in the past. I wanted to know on the older ps4 if the two screws keeping the power supply down were loose can that cause the disk drive to not respond?
Thanks! No that won't cause the disc drive to not respond. Check your large, wide ribbon cable.
TronicsFix LLC thanks I'll check it out just repaired the overheating problem yesterday
How much does it typically cost to "reball" and where would I find a good place to do that?
Damn, I never experienced the blue light of death. The only issue i had with my base PS4 was the disc kept ejecting for no reason. It happened about 2 or 3 times.
I got my PS4 used and when I first got it it would do the BLOD. It only did it a couple times when I first got it and it hasn't done it again in months. Also more recently my PS4 froze instantly cutting video and audio fto my TV. Pressing and holding the power button did nothing (I may not have held it long enough) so I had to unplug it. And finally a couple days ago I put it into rest mode and a couple hours later I was gonna turn it on and noticed the white light was blinking and I assume it had been blinking for hours. I held my finger on the power button for like 30 seconds and forced it off. None of these issues are persistent. Any idea what its deal is?
Inept Jedi This exact thing happened to my launch ps4
My PS4 can enter safe mode but when I initialize the PS4 it works until after the ps logo shows up is this still the blue light of death?
How much does the fix on the fat unit cost ?
How much approximately does the reballing on the Slim and Pro Consoles cost/
And how long is the warranty on these units ?
ps. if it costs too much is't it easier to put the repair money towards buying another second hand but in very good condition?
Thanks.

Hello, I have a question about my PS4 not turning on. It all started when it would turn off by itself while gaming, then it became worse to the point where when you press the power button, it sounds, and shows the blue light for a split second after it turns off.I heard that it could be a power supply problem. Especially because after trying to turn it on, if i would try to do it again, it would be straight dead until I unplugged and plugged the cable.

@@shakoor3218 At the moment I am trying to fix a 1215, I think it might have been dropped or the previous owner opened it without knowing what he did. He sold it as "doesn't turn on at all", when I tested it out it got the BLOD (and yes, I hate being lied to), but every now and then it actually turns on and then runs fine. I think the issue might be PSU-related, but at the moment I don't have another 1215 PSU to test it.
I also have a slim with a BLOD (but this time I actually knew it was a BLOD, I needed it for spares), I am thinking about putting the board in the oven, just to see if that fixes it. I needed the drive and the case, so the board is a donor board anyways.
OK, back to that 1215. When I watched the video he said something about this being caused by corrosion. That gave me an idea. I have a can of penetrating oil around (you know, the stuff you spray on your spark plugs when they don't make good contact), I use it for cleaning switches like the Game Boy switch. It stops and removes corrosion. So I decided to spray it under the APU, just to see what happens. And after I gave it a good spray it now switches on immediately and every time.
@Swagonme22 It worked for around two days, then failed and is now back to the state it was before. It's basically been sitting here for ~six months now, but considering how the prices for these things have skyrocketed, I might try fixing it with washers and selling it as "working, but probably not for long".

Solder cracks happen because the solder shrinks and expands a lot if the difference of temperature between the APU and ambient is big,
So keep your console as cool as possible.
Also the higher the clock speed the shorter the life of the silicon chip:
PSX: 33.9MHz
PS2: 299 MHz
PS3: 3200 MHz
PS4: 1600 MHz
PS4 Pro: 2130 MHz
Every silicon chip is bound to die one day...
Power Play and that is just an horrible truth😔

Now turn his back on for a few seconds blue light comes on then white light and after that it shuts down. Is the problem in a power supply? Or something else?
how long will it take them to finally use the pc approach, balling them on simply not reliable at all. look at the failure rate of both x360 and ps3, cant believe they still continue with the same way to this gen. I guess they save some money
I bought a second hand ps4 from someone and im so pissed that the blue light happened to me.
i think its the lead free solder thats the problem.
That's a common theory.
It sure is if it was leaded solder this problem would have never happend in the ps4 BLOD and on the ps3 YLOD if i could use a bga i would use lead solder on any chip.

Have you ever tryed to flow flux under the chip and clean it in an ultrasonic cleaner? Or is there any tips that you could give that would let you know if it was a corrosion issue?
No, I haven't. The only way I've found to check for corrosion is by removing the chip.
Opened the top with a small flathead screwdriver, and put two soda top tabs under the screws for the cpu. Went right into safe mode and saved me buying another one
We need to understand why these solderballs crack in the first place? obviously Sony still uses crappy thermal paste which dries fast, meaning overheating issues and causing cracks in the solder balls due to temprature differences between board & chip. I opened mine Ps4+Pro and put quality thermal paste within the warranty of the console and never have had hoverheating issiues
It's generally not a matter of the solder balls cracking. As I say in the video...many times it's caused by corroded solder pads. No way to know what's causing that but I doubt it's heat related.
Playstation V Could be just cheap solder. Sony used lead free solder with the PS3 and that was the biggest problem for overheating.
Even a small amount of bad and old thermal paste is conducting the heat pretty well. Oxidation of solder materials is a common problem. The oxidation rate depends on the solder composition, room temperature but more important moisture and corrosive substances in the air. Adittionally there is a quality range within the soldering process at the manufacturing facility. That's why two people can buy two PS4 with the same production date at the same time and one brokes, the other not. Unfortunatly solder materials with low corrosion rates uses rare and super rare earth metals. Another method would be to apply an anticorrosive coating. The point is ... there is barely a benifit for sony in doing so: they just have to calculate that everything works for 2 years. After that: they don't care and you propably have to buy a new one.
This is just going to be reality for electronics as parts shrink and speeds go up. Through hole parts with tons of solder and signals in the low MHz don't show issues like 0.25mm balls of solder forming connections that run at GHz.
The RoHS lead-free regulations didn't help that any.
PS3 HAD D SIMMILAR PROBLEM ON THE FHAT VERSIONS IT WAS BETTER THEN THE SLIM AND THE SUPER SLIM I SEE THATS NOT THE CASE ON THE PS4
My ps4 slim was working like a charm and then one day it just wouldn't respond the way it should, and the ps4 would crash and won't turn off properly and it won't render game's like it used to, any advice and actions i should do???? Please help
Same thing here. How did you fix it?
Pro tip: waiting for people to tell you how to fix your problem in a youtube comment section is not your best approach. Try an electronics repair shop to attempt to identify the problem and possible solutions.
Such a badass tshirt 😊
My man your awesome. Looks like the same problem as with the PS3.
Hey thanks!
124 hrs into Monster Hunter and I get this... 😫😫😫
I finished spiderman i finished 3 seasons worth of fortnite battle pass and more
Hey Steve lets team up and figure out a way to fix the BLOD on PS4 slim, Pro and 12XX consoles with the washer method.
Hi Fasttech! I've tried it on all of those consoles but haven't had any luck. Have you guys tried it?
Tried the washer method with a 1215A and a slim PS4 with no luck.
Perhaps there needs to be a backplate enforcement that goes along with the washers to make it work like it does on 1000 and 1100 units.
Did you guys try adding a shim under the clamp? Would probably add a little more pressure. Would try without the nylon washers first, and then would try with. See if anything helps. Don't have a ps4 with the BLOD here, but may pick one up if I can find one cheap enough. Not really worth my time to mess with the clamp/shims though. Would just reball the thing.
Did you guys try washing it off?
Even with the BLOD your system can still operate correct? I'm thinking that's what's going on with my pro it'll turn itself off and stay in that blue phase. On startup it'll just turn off on its own so maybe it's something else. 3 weeks till the 5 gotta hold out a little longer lol
Was just a matter of time before my PS4 eventually gave up on me, surprised it lasted me so long. Been having it since I was in damn near elementary & now in college ahaha.
