  • Ben Spies is an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame’r that had an incredible road racing career both in the US and in Europe. Ben rose to fame racing in the glory years of the AMA Superbike Championship and his battles with Aussie Matt Mladin are legendary. The GFC in 2008 force Ben to look for opportunities to race overseas and in 2009 he made the move to the WSBK Championship and then onto MotoGP. Ben is one of the nicest guys you can hope to ever meet and I loved getting the chance to talk his career and life.

I read a Jonny Rea interview regarding his time in Motogp and how he couldn't go any quicker. His team manager told him what he needed to do to push the bike to the next level, he said that to go faster he needed to generate more grip, and that those at the front would brake so hard up to the apex that they took the tyre up to another level of traction, and, of course, if you didn't push it hard enough, when you released the brake, you would go down.

frame suspension flex is a interesting subject.
    hard to explain.
a real thing you just have to feel i quess?
i can maybe share something about that...
i have expirience with dirtbikes, speedway/longtrack bikes and a bit of racing on tarmac.
so, those speedway/longtrack bikes, it has fuck all on the bike compared to most other disciplenes in racing motorcycles.
frame/engine/throttle/front swingarm (no telescopes or anything fancy) no back suspension in speedway and a clutch.
so on a harder surface like sturdy grass, or clay for example,
in the corners you feel the frame twisting and bending, especially when you not consistent with the throttle.
but anyway, what i am trying to say, i advice a lot of people in racing to try a speedway or grasstrack/longtrack bike, it really gives you feeling with wheel spin/grip, frame suspension and throttle control.
just because it doesnt have all kinds of crazy suspension with superb dampers and stuff, its a more spartanic feel you have to get with the bike in cornering.
but again its just an perspective from a really nuanced way of racing motorbikes.
just thought to share it here, might interrested a lot of riders i quess
    peace!

For example he was talking about the difference in a corner between the 2 bikes.
The super bike you could get back in the throttle to have weight transfer for front end bite.
The guest then said the gp bike would not weight transfer like that was explaining why and the commentator says it upsets the chassis interrupting his point and completely missed his point about weight transfer. Did that so many times

Also any man that knows how to have a conversation, knows to be respectful and let the other person finish. They taught me this in like 5th grade, you do not interrupt bc you’re selfishly moving on in your mind and missing points, not to mention it’s completely unprofessional and annoying for both the guest and us watching…

See! not at all what you were going to say. And just because you call it chat, tales, talk....does not negate what it is by definition, an interview. No one came here to hear you did they or else you could just blog and talk on a mic about "your" opinions and it would not have any of the same merit as what Ben has to say.

Disagree. worst hot take ever. I followed Nicks whole career, Nicky was fortunate to have Honda believe in him at the right time. Nicky did the work and won the title against Rossi. Only reason Nick didn't win two was the gp rule change too 800ccc. It's unfair that Ben got hurt so bad, cut short his career. He had a GP championship in him as well.

@@TheInfantry98 the 990 bikes were all about sliding it and squaring off the corner. The 800 were smaller high rpm, high corner speed bikes that Rossi, pedrosa and stoner came up on. Your right, Nicky couldn’t ride that style of bike. If they had kept the 990 no rider assist formula Nick would have been a two time champ.
