- The Hysperian Cruiser, the RNS Monaveen or Monaveen-type starship is the flagship vessel for the 2380 Hysperian colony. It was their primary defensive and dimploatic vessel with some unique "ren fare" flair and draconic medieval style. First seen in Lower Decks, let's take a look at this Dragon of space!

So basically these guys went with the "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic if you squint a little and believe really hard" aesthetic.
Yes, and never break character.
They're an entire civilisation of LARPers
And, any sufficiently analyzed Magic is indistinguishable from Technology.
The more I think about it,..I kinda dig it.
I mean, kinda reminds me of what drives the whole Klingon aesthetic
@@FuzzyBunnyofInle Makes me wonder if these people refer to Klingons as orcs or trolls. The Vulcan are elves.
The fact that it's intelligence ability is called "ponder the orb" is downright hilarious.
It's a reference to a scrying orb, commonly known today as a crystal ball.
@@TheOneTrueDragonKing yes but Ponder the orb is a reference to the wizard staring at the orb meme.
@@barrybend7189 It's a reference to more than that.
Multiple franchises have used similar concepts. Crystal balls are everywhere in science fiction and fantasy.
One other example from both genres that uses it is the original MMPR with Zordon's "viewing globe".
It's one reason I use the ship for my tribute recreation of the original Dragon Ranger, MMPR's Green Ranger - Jason David Frank.
Well... you gotta give them credit for their determination to stay in character.
I'd say so long as they don't get weird about it, but that ship sailed, so I'll settle for "so long as they don't get creepy or mean about it."
We had that 'Black Ship' in an earlier episode and now this? Love it, I do feel that a 40k ship fan had a hand in the designs!
Sucks that Lower Decks isn't getting more episodes.
I love it when Rick gets cheeky with his intros.
You said that it reminds you of a rocket. I kept thinking of Moya, the main ship from Farscape. The ship looks awesome and I love the planet trying to use fantasy in their sci-fi.
This has given me quite a bit of inspiration for a Spelljammer game I’m running soon!
In STO I took the console out and slapped it in to my Cardassian Carrier (With the Five Magicks trait too), so I imagine there's some pretty major aesthetic clashes between Cardassian sections and the Hysperian modules.
I slapped it into my Klingon's K'tinga class. Somehow, I think it would fit right in.
I have it on the Jem'Hadar Vanguard Dreadnought Carrier.
@@Lukos0036 "Klingons have royal houses too, right?"
@@christopherg2347 Yup, and a thing for elaborate decoration.
@@Lukos0036 would hysperians consider klingons to be "space orcs"?
This is my new favorite Star Trek faction and I want to live on that planet.
They took Medieval Times and turned it into a world.
Though Lower Decks naturally took a tongue-in-cheek approach to its depiction, a deliberately anachronistic and romanticized culture is a great approach to a post-scarcity society. People need a sense of meaning for their lives, and typically embrace grand narratives to find it. Building a culture around such narratives actually makes more sense than the United Earth’s vague “we work to better our selves and all mankind” ethos.
@@theodoremccarthy4438 "Well, we don't have to struggle for food anymore. So what are we to do with this planet?"
"Knights and dragons, clearly."
"Nicccce."

When this was released this summer as the event reward I knew I had to grab it. I normally dont do the summer events and hope Cryptic continues to add cool and interesting ships like this
I'm really hoping that the T6 Obelisk is this summers ship...
@@AzraelThanatos Do we not already have a T6 Obelisk?
Well then in that case, I hope so too
@@zoneofendless.Nope, there's a lower tier one and a T5 along with the old special one from Sphere of Influence, both are Lobi at the moment...they've been showing off some art for a T6 recently
@@AzraelThanatos Interesting. That sounds awesome. I know they released a Dyson ship bundle recently, and Im glad theyre focusing on that sort of style again
@@zoneofendless.Yep...and there were some people theorizing that the issues with Sphere of Influence that popped up recently was that they might have been messing with the Obelisk section and screwed up kind of like how there were a lot of minor issues that popped up with the Borg stuff when they added Assimilators and replaced Cubes in most things with them.
5:10 -- Referring to the warp coils as the Elf Matrix would make a certain kind of sense. Traditionally, the realm of Faerie is depicted as one where time and distance do not obey the same laws as they do on Earth.
For instance, the Irish warrior Oisin famously fell in love with a Fae princess and went to live in her homeland. He later longed to return to visit Ireland and learn of the exploits of his brothers in the Fianna (the followers of Finn McCool -- equivalent to the Knights of the Round Table, but much wilder). His wife lent him an Elven steed and told him to on no account step down from the horse while visiting. He leaned over to help a farmer move a boulder (which seemed to Oisin to be a trifle, as it was only as tall as the farmer himself, and all the Fennian warriors would have easily tossed it about as if it were a skipping stone). The horse's saddle-strap broke, and Oisin fell. The moment he touched the ground, the 900 years he had been absent from Earth began to catch up with him and he rapidly died of old age -- a condition which had no effect on him in the Fae realm.
There are also repeated warnings to not stray from the path one is shown to reach a destination, lest the traveler be forever lost ("follow the Yellow Brick Road" is a reference to that tradition). Again, suggesting that the Fae realm was in some sense not spacetime "as we know it".
Interesting idea of STO to give it a cloak, as it does not need to abide by the Treaty of Algeron. And giving it a "dragons breath".
Thought it was 'see thee,' not 'see thine.'
Not my favourite, but it's a free T6 ship, so I wasn't going to complain. I think I was most disappointed by its speed, since I like my ships nimble. Nice to see a human ship with a cloak. I like that more Starfleet ships include one as well, although not a battle cloak.
it has one of the most insane trait + console for non-conventional energy types (except disruptors because they're pretty much conventional)
its a 5/3 ships with underperforming seats (Lt intel and Lt Pilot...so no RRtW and a very light SS)
It's a surprisingly capable ship in game. At least the equal I think of the alliance Khitomer class. If you fancy a smaller battle cruiser over the typical monoliths the player base prefers, it's a good choice for a freebie.
a good RCS console and it's as nimble, if not more so, than many escorts in my opinion.
I totally see stuff like this being in humanity's future
Nerds will always be nerds
I thought all of starfleet are already nerds. Do you mean medieval or fantasy nerds specifically?
@@krisnamurti3957 all kinds of nerds
Handsome looking ship and kudos to you for sticking with the theme.
I understand, this isn’t just some elaborate role play, this is legitimately their culture. Truly amazing.
I have a hard time taking this seriously, but I salute you for giving it a go.
Mad props on the background music choice. It fits the video perfectly. Thanks for another great video. This was an interesting ship.
Cool ship from a fun series.
Already had a Magic-Space Knight when this came out in STO, this immediately became my primary with the Discovery Vanity Shield weaving a 'mysterious pattern' around the hull. Still running it... very fun ship to fly! Nearly as mobile as the best paid-for ships in its class with a full battle cloak so I can just disappear whenever I want to. Does seem to indicate to some of the more spendy types that I need help in group combats though. I rarely do, please do your part of the mission.
Part of me kind of wondered with the Hysperians if they were going to go with another preserver offshoot humanity such as popped up several times in TOS with the joke being that whatever alien group doing it just yoinked some RenFaires along with way rather than their normal tactics
Not a bad ship. I like it.
Me to.
As soon as I saw the Monaveen I loved it! It's now my favorite ship dethroning the Steamrunner and D'deridex.
This was excellent! Thanks for committing to the bit!
would love to have more of these. glad you're getting into the none starfleet ships. need kdf, romulan, cardassian, etc. so many more ship ideas!
The British Accent elevates the dialogue to hitherto unseen heights.
I would have loved to see a different ending to the Original Series episode "Who Mourns for Adonais?" where Kirk sent word back to the Federation to see if there were any people on Earth, Mars, etc that would be interested in coming to live with Apollo. An interweaving of Apollo's proclivities (and knowledge -- he was credited with inventing the concept of cities, politics, municipal administration, as well as several forms of music and arts), the interests of the colonists, and then-modern technology could have made for an interesting Federation-aligned world by, say, Next Generation era. I could imagine them launching exploratory vessels named Argo, Phosphoros (bringer of light, the name of a historical Athenian naval vessel), Paralos, and Salaminia (sacred Athenian ships used to carry messages and transport delegations to places like the Oracle of Delphi -- modern equivalent would be a diplomatic vessel).
Planet Express green!!! Love it!
Dude that's hella Bardcore! ❤
Someone finally made a video about one of the non federation ships I've wanted to know about most!!!! 😮❤
Engagement for good content yay! Thanks for the video!
Given some of the peculiar worlds encountered in TOS that emulated different eras or aspects of Earth culture, this seems like a logical progression of that into the TNG era.
After that episode, I can now see a Japanese Samurai era themed colony started up by humans, but is a very popular tourist destination for Klingons. Or even a second home!
After an encounter with the Monaveen Class, I wonder if it would inspire perhaps a Federation equivalent? (Minus the cloak of course). This would make a great Intel and stealth cruiser. And the "dragon scales" could be added as a newer form of advanced armor. Say it's the "sacrificial layer" and under is the Tritanium hull. An enemy can burn off the scales, but just underneath is a sort of "inner shield" protecting the hull. A lower cost version of "ablative armor". A sort of compliment ship to the Defiant Class.
And perhaps even a task force of Defiant and the "Kulkulkahn" Class (In honor of the STTAS entity know as Kulkulkahn and his ship). Stealth and defense together.
Right off the bat, a green ship with a beautiful sun in the distance.
I see the appealing in fact I FEEL the appealing!! I would want to see more like this kind, is the closer ST would get to 40K xD
It looks like a Vorlon ship, if the aft were the bow. Neat design overall. 🥰
"The Gilded Pickle" as it's called in Star Trek Fleet Command...😅
I've always just kinda seen Star Trek as "D&D in space."
We've got long lived pointy eared bastards who think they're better then everyone else (and their evil cousins). As well as, a rough, but honorable, warrior race who can drink you and all your buddies under the table. Meddling gods, ancient powers, terrible beasts, political intrigue, and epic quests. The whole nine yards.
Pretty unique design 👌
I like the conceit for the voiceover at the start :) though haven't you done Klingon ships too? Maybe you mean first non-Fed human ship.
I didn't know they'd thought through quite so many of the naming conventions. I really like the "scrying orb" for the sensors though.
I always assumed the Hysperians declared independence from the Federation 50-100 years after colonisation, but I suppose they could've been independent from day one... since, as you say, the Federation doesn't withhold aid just because you won't become a vassal state.
An intriguing entry.
what a strange design
The aft of the ship reminds me of the Leviathans or Moya from Farscape. But I would like to see if this faction has bigger war ships or other types of ships in the future.
For those who are unaware this entire colony is just one very on the nose reference to dragon riders of pern an iconic science fantasy franchise involving humans colonizing a planet, creating literal psychic dragons, and then regressing into a pre industrial/medieval culture due to dpme sci fi nonsense. Its a pretty great series.
A second-hand one that's been retrofitted to fully utilise its internal space and not be so wasteful in its layout would be a deceptively formidable ship.
Maybe there's a pragmatic Secret faction of Hyperion intelligence that have stripped one out of all luxuries and made a pure man of war version?
100th comment ! I honestly forgot all about this ship but I'm very glad you are covering different types of ships, it keeps it interesting.
FYI, you can change the ship's hull color with a shipyard ship customization vendor.
(I highly recommend black)
It would have been nice if in star trek online we got the interior of the ship too.
Imagining these kind of ships running around during the Dark Age of Technology makes it a whole lot easier for me to believe that the “flying cathedrals” aesthetic of 40k was a carryover from previous centuries rather than something invented after the Ministorum got big.
Wait, does this mean that the entire DAOT human federation was made up of Hysperian-style LARPers??
This ship reminds me of Planet Express Ship from Futurama. 1:33 as I typed, he literally mentions it....
Lots of space fire with this one. We're always having fires out in the vacuum of space.
Great video :) Now do one on Klingon ships... in Klingon!
I think it is pretty cool
Definitely missing the Sir Goodrich at the end.
A civilisation of LARPers. Love it.
When an entire planet decides to LARP 😂😂 I kind of love this.
I wonder what kind of functions they set assign the word _'mithril'_ for, if any. 🤔
Now I wanna see how these people evolved into the 30th century. Surely the Burn should have a massive impact on a people like thus
Hrm... Rule of Cool...
I'll allow it.
I want one of those... Man I need to update STO.
Heres hoping someone makes a deck layout plan for this at some point, it would be a great edition to a spelljammer like dnd game
Still hoping for a mantacore/chimera breakdown. For Nog!
Cool.
An entire culture of LARPers.
Also, about them calling probably Sub-space "Elf space";
That tracks with real world elven mythology, because any "Elf" mythology I've come across in the real world, always have them living in another realm, seperate from our reality.
And here I thought it was a joke about elves being bottoms...
@@SabertoothSeal the two concepts do not have to be mutually exclusive. Elves can be otherworldly bottoms and that's okay.
Reminds me of the ships of The Orville
When I got it in sto I changed the color made it to a baby kuklukhan ship
Stop looking at my thy, Rick
(Why did you have to do the outro almost that well)

My hope is that somewhere within their systems is a subroutine to roll a d20 to determine exact specs of any specific output.
“Maximum warp, away we go!”
-ships rolls crit fail and only does warp 1
Structural integrity field fails its Con Save.
...So you're telling us that this is one of the only STO ships where the interior hallways are actually in-scale? :-)
SPACE!!!
Anyone else get the futurama vibe ?
Is it just me, or does the silhouette of this ship resemble the leviathan living ships of Farscape?
When the Mirror universe humans from the 40k universe end up in star trek but leave behind the ultra-violence... they kept the baroque, over the top aesthetic though....
Dumb question: How did you get those shots of the ship on Risa?
Demorecord.
1:31 it’s called electric mucus
I bet they could call Shuttles, chariots.haha
every time i see this ship, i think planet express
Looks like a Boron ship from the X game series
Look combine UFP and romulan ship designed
So this is what it looks like when some Warhammer 40K gets all up in my Star Trek.
LARPing in space never looked so cool.
It's the space pickle! If you play Star Trek: Fleet Command you know what I'm saying.
i wonder how often Starfleet called there friends with cloaking technology. easy way of getting around that treaty.
hmm, it maybe wishful thinking to know if this ship maybe Free to obtain.
It was, back when it was released. You just had to go through the event.
So Enterprise D but magic
I'm gonna miss Lower Decks.
Can we not adjust the universal translator to render these dorks normal?
Nope. Not when its culture based.
My evidence?
"Temba, his arms wide. Darmok & Jalad at Tenagra".
It's called Electric Mucous, not Planet Express Green!
*"Non-Federation Human Transport Vessel"....you mean a bus? That's a bus!!!*
It is a PITY STO did NOTHING for the bridge of the ship. A real missed opportunity...
A flame thrower seems useless in space combat except against the most vulnerable ships
Fire is only one type of plasma. Other forms of plasma are not generated by an exothermic oxidation chemical reaction. Also, it is entirely possible for fire (such as from rocket engines) to burn in a vacuum or even underwater as long as an oxidizer is present.
This one brought the lulz
When you want to have WH40k ship but have to stay in canon.
I remember calling mine in STO "Sir Kermit the Mangled" as it looked like a squashed frog 😂
They must be very selective about the application of that medieval worldview considering the diversity of all the people standing around
"Our king allows people from many lands to reside in his realm."
Medieval Europe actually had quite a diversity of skin tones, at least in cities and major towns, due to all the traders.
In fact what we tend to think of as "traditional Medieval European food" is largely just imported Medieval Arabic food, hence the spices and frequent use of dates and raisins :) the lute was also imported from Arabia, then eventually turned into the guitar.
@@kaitlyn__L Just because diverse people EXISTED in these societies does not mean they were always treated WELL you feel me?
@@samwill7259 that’s fair. I often see repeated a myth that they never existed/visited/traveled at all.
It’s true there isn’t much written evidence about how integrated they were into any communities, but there also isn’t much evidence of any particular hostility - no more than say a Spaniard or a Greek trader would get in Britain. They all seemed to be regarded as people just going on about their business, by and large.
The exception in written works is antisemitism, that was very rife at the time and highly evident. But of course there were and are Jews with all colours of skin, so that wouldn’t look the same or be evident purely visually.
@@kaitlyn__L These are still Starfleet Earth people when you get down to brass tacks I suppose. Any concept of bigotry in the motif would be very alien to them
Planet Express ship?.......anybody else....?
To be honest, I would love to have the "Monaveen style" for all my ships, Federation, Klingon and otherwise. It would fit incredibly well with them.
With its' incredibly detailed appearance, individual orichalcum scales and the parts that look like dragon bones and horns, plus there are parts that look quite elegant, like giant blue jewels set in the skull of a dragon.
Perhaps as a vanity shield or hull material. Someday.
EDIT: And yes, I agree that the interior would have been nice too. Unfortunate we didn't get it - so I've had to do with the Lukari interior.
Side note, orichalcum is real. It was, according to a quick Google search, an early form of brass.
EDIT 2: In my own roleplaying Starfleet subfaction, the Draconia Cosmo Navy, we actually have something very similar to the Dragonsblood Reactor on our ships; however, ours comes in the form of a more traditional plasma lance known as the Solar Dragonfire Cannon.
The name is often shortened to SDC, and it actually functions similar to the Wave Motion Gun from Space Battleship Yamato, in that it takes all the power of the ship to fire it, less shields, gravity and life support.
Like the WMG of SBY, the Solar Dragonfire Cannon is spinally mounted and comes in two varieties, single massive sweeping beam (it sweeps through a 180-degree arc in the front of the ship when fired) and dispersion beam. (Though identical in function the Dispersion-type SDC is known by another name, chosen to honor another fantasy franchise.)
Both models of SDC are insanely powerful, and capable of igniting stellar fusion, hence the name. This is a real threat in the universe of Star Trek given the fact that matter/antimatter warp drives collect and store interstellar hydrogen for the matter part of their fuel.
Also, as a side note, while most people saw this ship and immediately went to "Planet Express rocket" I immediately saw Thunderbird 2 from the titular Gerry Anderson puppetry series as well as the later CGI series.
This is what happend when you let D'n'D nerds open a Ren faire on a distante planet
