The fact that the Elantra N is constantly being compared to the car class above it (Golf R, HCR) and not it’s own class (Si, GTI) speaks wonders on how badass this car is.

plenty of $$$ off top for other things like track tires/rims and something for daily driving etc tunes and so on...while paying it off vs having that extra to handle down the road. Plus most of the cars it competes with also need more gr86/wrx both need brake kits to be ideal on track. plenty of other cars in the N price segment that need more to do "more" vs the N off the lot. I just wish the 6 spd was more engaging the way the civic si or gr86 sells as. It makes the DCT look too good makes me consider the KONA lowered...but its marked up pretty tuff in my area 36k+5k....ouch. I think that was Hyundai's goal with the Elantra N, to make a daily driver, that is tame but fun from 9 to 5, but a fun haver after 5 and on the weekends. It can be a driver's car, but it needs more power. That's where the Civic Type R shines. I'd choose the Elantra N for myself though.

The verdict is simple. Don't buy the civic type R to stick it to honda for raising the price.
Think about it this way, they were selling an accord with this same motor and gear box for 29k in 2018. Sure, its around 34k now...but the Civic type R is a whopping 10 grand over a LUXURY SEDAN with the same engine. The Bill of Materials just doesn't add up in my mind.
If the Civic cost 39,000 it would already be more appealing simply because its technically "sub 40 grand".
The elantra is fantastic, I don't think anyone should be skipping it just because the civic is 1% better. The fact that they can do it, means honda can to, and that is just the reality. You are paying for the name brand. Its the same reason people are fed up with over priced toyota trucks that use dinosaur parts. Its just a brand name.
You would think car nerds would be hyper technical and notice this, but alas, like Orwell said in 1984, emotions trump truth.

Real price difference isn't $10K, its $20-30K unless you are Savagegeese, Topher, Joe Raita or Tedward, then Honda will get you one for retail because you can promote the Type R on youtube, the world we live in.
Therefore you should have included the Audi RS 3 for $65-ish, 000. That is the true price of a Type R and the RS 3 leaves both the the Type R and bargain Elantra N for dead because the Audi is a luxury car that does everything better.
Yup, $65K or about $20K over MSRP for a 'Civic' is the going rate for the new Type R. A fool and his money. Lots of fools out there.

Very true. A Civic Type R is "affordable" in exactly the same way a Nissan GT-R is. It's attainable with a car payment of well over $1000 a month and while I'll acknowledge how sweet of a car it is all day, any day, for that kind of money there are WAY more badass cars to be had.

For me, a good gearbox action is a precious thing. It made me lust after a 240Z after driving a friend's car in college. It is a real advantage the S2000 I used to own over the Boxster I have now. Worth $10,000? That's tough, but between that and other factors like track readiness, it would push me to the Type R.

Between these two cars I would absolutely go with the CTR just due to its pedigree, build quality, and the kind of dynamics that only 30 years of development can bring you. But then I look at the price gap (as well as the laughably superior warranty) of the Hyundai and I start to think that, while the CTR is the superior sports car, is it really worth so much more money? As a Honda fanboy I say absolutely but as a poor person I just can’t justify the price. The Elantra N is an incredible bargain when you consider just how good it really is. I just wish I liked the odd styling, like even a little bit.
